H&R Block At Home 2010 Premium Federal + State + eFile ReviewI've only really started filling out a return with this year's copy. However, I already see that it will soon be time to jump ship to other software, like TurboTax in the future.
I'm not a tax expert, but I'm fairly capable of figuring out how to enter the correct information on the forms. So, for the most part, the multimedia clips are not usually important to me. I use the software because it allows you to add in or correct information as it comes in, recalculating totals and incorporating data from earlier years automatically.
My main point is this:
I started out using H&R Block tax prep software specifically because it would do all the work on my machine---not on some server I don't control, like TurboTax does. I want full control of my data. I don't want my computer connected to the internet when I'm trying to get this kind of work done (b/c of both security and connection reliability). So, in spite of many better offers for the Turbo Tax software, I've stuck with H&R Block's product. Now, though, the Deduction Pro feature that used to be an executable installed from the HRB install disc isn't even on the install disc anymore. It's been turned into a web-based application. I don't want a web-based app for this, and I wonder if next year the tax prep part will be like that too. Already, it appears that the video tutorials and help require an internet connection and have to be uploaded each time. As far as I can tell, there's not much on the distribution CD except an installer for the main app.
So what's the point in sticking with H&R Block's software, if the main benefit (to me, anyway), distinguishing it from a more highly-rated competitor, is gone?H&R Block At Home 2010 Premium Federal + State + eFile Overview
