QuickBooks Premier Industry Editions 2012 ReviewThat was painless. I upgraded from 2011 Pro this weekend. This Premier version has some new front-end and back-end tools to enable pricing by customer, billing rates by employee and order entry/backlog management. These are value adding elements that raises the shrinkwrap utility nearer to larger system capabilities. I've obviously got to test run these new features next week. If something is amiss, I'll keep you posted. My 4Q11 books will close with QuickBooks 2012.From experience, I upgrade my biz software annually. In the long run, the annual re-up is inevitably the best value for money and secondarily ... so that nobody can complain that 'we have to use old tools'. My engineering and sciences guys get their annual upgrades for SolidWorks, LabView, Mentor Graphics and Mathematica. I feel compelled to extend the same upgrade logic to the accounting system. If you stay with one version for too many years, you are not leaving data risk integrity to chance in a future migration. That's a disaster that never stops giving in your financial comparabilities for years to come. On the customizing side, too many Excel band aids turn lethal when just one otherwise 'minor' Excel formula error goes bad. The closer I can get to an integrated and nearly bullet-proof financial solution, the better. The expanded capability here should eliminate front and back-end band-aids.
I have MAS90, QuickBooks and Peachtree running not by choice but because I'm cheap and system change chaos in unification is an insufferable pain and an absolutely lost value added opportunity. If the biz runs on brand "x", I keep them on brand "x". My first small biz experience beyond Sage-based systems was with the QuickBooks 2011 edition. QuickBooks has proven the best value for money.
Do not pre-suppose that the shrinkwrap price is going to be the complete cost associated with your accounting system. You will pay for various support and the eventual necessary updates as GAAP and state/fed tax rules change. This is a one seat license and if you want 2-5 you have to buy them. That buyers are shocked by this inevitability is a mystery to me (as reflected in many negative QuickBooks 2011 reviews). If you NEED an accounting software, it has a recurring cost beyond the initial purchase. There are no vendors pedaling a buy once and forget-about-it solution.
If I had systemic beef, it would be in the bank reconciliation process but it's not necessarily a QuickBook issue but a bank accounting issue. If your biz has multiple bank accounts and you try to keep them individually reconciled in QuickBooks at closing (AP checking, payroll checking, savings, etc), the process is tedious if you move money among individual accounts. 6 months ago we decided to use the bank generically rather than by account. "Total bank" balance = net of all transactions. The internal bank transactions and banking charges become confusing and you can chase 50 cents all over the place. The books close faster and more efficiently with the notional "total bank".
5 stars on both price and the unexpected delight factor in the 2012 expanded capability. Amazon has the lowest comparative cost at this time.
