Microsoft Windows Server Standard 2008 - 5 Client ReviewThis rating would be 4 1/2 stars if that were possible!Although Windows 2008 R2 is still not as "feature rich" as some VMWare and Citrix offerings, Microsoft has done quite a decent job on this Operating System. An important new feature in the R2 version is the ability to migrate virtual machines from server to server, analogous to VMWare's VMotion.
From my installations and runs of R2, I have found it reasonably easy to install and stable.
Note that if you intend to use Hyper-V R2, it is necessary to have a system with Intel's VT technology (or AMD's equivalent) and have it enabled (usually done with a BIOS setting).
Hyper-V's performance with virtual machines running number crunching applications is good to very good for Windows virtual machines and fair to good for Linux VM's. However, it appears that Microsoft is making some good faith efforts to improve Linux compatibility and performance. At this writing W2008 R2 will support Novell's SuSe servers and Red Hat Linux Enterprise Version 5. They do need to improve their Linux support but Server 2008 R2 is off to a good start.
