Paperport 14.0 ReviewUnfortunately, an outstanding product created by Scansoft, many years ago, was totally ruined by folks at Nuance, which are apparently responsible for all programing mistakes/changes/revisions.
After the fine Version No.9 was discontinued and Nuance would not provide Print Driver for Windows 7, all subsequent versions: Called "upgrades".(Nos. 11,12, 12.1 and now 14) have completely changed and complicated the non-intuitive interface with top bar overloaded with functions that are confusing and unnecessary for regular work and for most part not reversible. For example if you try to go one step back you most of times exit the program.
The program is slow, slow, slow. If a folder has more than 50 documents, all transactions i.e. stacking, unstacking, saving and conversions to or from PDF, sorting as well as search take what it seem like an eternity.
The functions that were instant in Version 9, take more than a minute in version 12 or 14 to complete. If the work requires you to handle: filing/stacking or saving 100 successive files it will take up to two hours (as compared to a few minutes in version 9) to accomplish these routine tasks. In the meantime your computer is locked for the length of time it takes to complete each transaction.. You can not do anything but wait for the Paperport to release the computer. A previous reviewer noted this and decided to have a cup of coffee. Several cups...
The Nuance Technical Support is less than helpful. The first Tech support person made me go through countless dos and undos, file creations, folder creations etc, hours upon hours wasted, only to abandon me in the middle of troubleshooting. He did not respond to any of my e-mails any longer. When I complained and finally got the "supervisor" to respond, we repeated all the previous steps and after several weeks he wrote:
"that Paperport 14 as well as 12.1) was working normally as it should. Although a bit slower, there were changes made with recent versions that allows the users to have more functionality with their files compared to previous versions. As you make changes within the folders, Paper Port keeps track of these changes in its system that causes delay when working with your files."
And program lethargy was my fault. He suggested that I should reorganize our folders to contain no more that 30 files each. To ask me do that, retroactively, in a busy office, is extremely unhelpful, costly and almost impossible to do. In addition Paperport 14 discontinued .max file extension( without notice I might add). All .max files from previous versions of Paperport became read only and could only be manipulated if and when converted to .pdf documents. More work.
In conclusion, and in my opinion, Paperport is being "upgraded" in order to "discontinue previous versions and sell upgrades to "New Version". Improvements are minimal if any, regressive, mostly cosmetic with reduced functionality ending in a bloated product with diminishing productivity value.
It is sad to see an excellent product becoming a non-performing, expensive and a useless toy. Companies like Nuance, with bad products, bad reputation and worse customers service are in danger to be out of business in very short time unless they start listening to customers and improve their products and services.
