Avid Software Sibelius 7 Upgrade ReviewFirst things first: Sibelius beats the pants off Finale. For capabilities, the two are more or less on a par -- but for user experience, it's like comparing Mac to MS-DOS. Sibelius works and mostly makes sense. Finale is one of the most convoluted, user-hostile interfaces you're ever likely to encounter.I've used Sibelius since version 3, and have been very happy with the previous upgrades. This one, however, leaves me cold. The new user interface they're trumpeting is a visually clumsy mess of hieroglyphic little icons in awkward colors that eat screen real estate for breakfast. The attempt at reorganization is admirable, but unsuccessful. It reminds me a lot of Word 6 when it came out all those years ago: too damn many buttons. Add to that the garish new paper texture and background color scheme (which you can turn off, but it takes some digging), and Sibelius 7 = eye bleed.
The program feels clunkier and less responsive than Sibelius 6 on my reasonably speedy MacBook Pro. UI elements are noticeably laggy. They're touting the 64-bit support as a speed improvement, and it may well help with instruments -- but the UI sure doesn't feel snappy!
Underneath, Sibelius remain excellent software. But the UI is not a step forward. They clearly have somebody with no visual design sense making visual design decisions.Avid Software Sibelius 7 Upgrade Overview
