Endnote X3 Upgrade for Windows ReviewEndnote is pretty much the standard reference manager, at least in my field (Biology). I have been using previous versions for close to 10 years, so I am very familiar with the program and have both Mac and PC versions. This review is for the PC version, so Mac users should realize that this review may not be helpful to them.
Overall, I am pretty happy with this version. It works basically the same way as do previous versions, although the interface has undergone some minor tweaks (nothing significant as far as I can tell). I had no difficulty in importing my full library (about 2700 references) from my Mac X.0.2 version or in saving citations from this version back to the Mac. That is very important to those of us who take advantage of Endnote's multiple platform capability.
Speed in searching and saving even a large library is quite impressive using a Sony Vaio VGN-240 laptop, but I can't tell if that is due to the program or the laptop. I have had no issues with Windows 7 (64-bit) either in installing the program or in saving files.
My only issue with this version compared to X.0.2 is with the installed styles for formatting references. In all previous versions of Endnote that I have used, all the styles come pre-installed. In Endnote X3, only the "100 most used" styles are pre-installed; the rest have to be either installed from the installation disk or downloaded from the web site. I find this quite objectionable; the whole purpose of upgrading to a new version is to gain more capability; having to spend time downloading the styles I need defeats that purpose.
Overall, I rate the product as a 4/5, mainly due to the issue over the styles. I am not sure I would upgraded had I known about that, but the relatively low price of the upgrade from Amazon still makes this fairly attractive if you need a new version of this programEndnote X3 Upgrade for Windows Overview
