Family Tree Maker 2011 Platinum ReviewCorrupt Disc, decent program
-- VERY difficult installation --
Dec 15 - I got this in the mail today and was very excited about it. But trying to install, I got error message 1305, and error -1603. Seems this is a problem for many XP users -- and apparently people with Windows 7 are having these problems as well. I've been trying to follow online troubleshooting guides for six hours, but no success yet. BEWARE before you buy unless you have a recent and fully-up-to-date computer.
Dec 16 - I install the backup/share CD to my Vista and XP machines. But I haven't been able to install or copy the main CD (the one that gives you the six-month online subscription) on Vista, XP, or Windows 7 machines. I sent an email, then called Ancestry.com's phone support. The phone disconnected twice from the same rep.
Dec 17 - Tech support emailed to say I had a corrupt disk and should call for a replacement. I called Ancestry.com but they referred me back to Amazon.com for an exchange, which is now being processed.
-- Initial thoughts based on backup install --
This is my first time using FTM, as I've been using familysearch's no-cost software for the last eight years or so. I found the import from PAF to be easy, as was fixing import errors through the task list.
However, I'm not impressed with their standardized place formatting. Many places (e.g. manor, then town, then city, then England) get compressed into City, England. This might make for nice maps, but loses a lot of local flavor. It also wants to turn old place names into the modern and standardized equivalent, which is rather anachronistic! You can choose to keep or ignore their suggestions, but as with their online "leaves," these suggestions can be a bit heavy-handed.

Dec 25 - Well, I've upped my rating to two-stars, because after working with this ALL day on Christmas, of all days, I... never got my replacement CD to work on three different computers, as before. But I did finally get a combination of files from the old broken CD and the new broken CD to actually install and give me the promised 6-month subscription. I still can't recommend this program, as I also find it buggy and slow, but I've spent so much time on it that I'm keeping it. I've heard that FTM 2006 v.16 is the fastest and most stable to date, and have seen a lot of other people having trouble and posting online with FTM 2011, so until the bugs and slow software are worked out, you might consider an older version. Best wishes on finding and recording your own family's history!

Update June 2011 - I haven't used the program much, and still turn to familysearch when I need a quick review of my information. My advice in general if you want something fast and stripped is to use familysearch. If you want something that syncs well with Ancestry.com, however, and you have a high-speed internet connection and processor, then perhaps you'll find this works for you!Family Tree Maker 2011 Platinum Overview
