Norton Antivirus 2010 1-User/3PC ReviewI've used Norton for 9 years and at the end of each year I buy the next version (when "I" get the time). Their policy has always been that your anti virus still functions but the latest updates are not given unless your paid subscription is up to date. This is fair and fine. What is piss poor customer treatment is now the minute your subscription expires your anti virus is turned off leaving you exposed on the internet! I won't be held hostage again I switched to Vipre and its even better(check out all the 5 star reviews). I won't have something I paid for taken away until I pay them a fresh ransom! As consumers send them a message or expect all of them to start doing this!
Update - Microsoft Security Essentials Is a FREE (anti virus) program downloaded from Microsoft and works extremely well. It consumes very little of your computers resources and seem to catch everything. This might be their best kept secret ever! An IT manager in my workplace recommend it to me and I've bee thrilled with it's performance ever since and it's FREE! Windows Live OneCare 2.0 (Up to 3 Users) ReviewI have been using Microsoft's Live OneCare System for about a year-and-a-half, and I went to the 2.0 version about three months ago. I've got to tell you though, I wasn't too happy about using it at first because of two factors: 1) Microsoft seemed to be linking a lot of things to this "Live" concept, and 2) The program seemed like it was making a lot of promises it couldn't keep. On the first matter, I still have some concerns; on the second matter, it has lived-up to its promises.
After almost a year, Microsoft upgraded my product to 2.0, and then when I added another computer to my LAN, I used one of the three licenses that came with the new version of OneCare to extend my HUB's subscription. And it did so without a problem. You will notice on the picture I uploaded from my individual computer (see customer images), that my subscription will renew in three days.
I don't know about you, but at work I've seen what not keeping-up with your virus protection and firewall protection can do to someone's computer. Mine hasn't been hit, but other's have and we use Norton's and McAfee at work with each computer set for automatic updates. At home, since I have a LAN, too, I wanted to make sure I didn't have similar problems, so for the past three years I tested several products, namely Norton's System Works, Norton's 360, e-Trust (Computer Associates), and OneCare.
Having used Norton's for over 12 years, I have been disappointed that they are doing less with their products, and I really became disenchanted when they didn't offer their firewall protection with System Works. Then, it seemed I couldn't find System Works, and I had to use 360, which was a mere shadow of System Works. It grated me that I had to buy one product, then buy their Internet Security, too. I, also, didn't think they were on top of the virus situation as much as they used to be. Then, there was an issue about renewals that did not go into effect when they should, and hour long waits for tech support to help correct the problem.
So, I tried e-Trust, and I didn't have any qualms about it, at first. At first it sent out e-mails, often times several times a day to update the software virus protection. Then, it went to an automatic check whenever you booted-up. Then, came the renewal. I had it on two machines and was successful only on one when it came to renewing my subscription. Now, batting 500 is great in the major leagues, but not when it comes to protecting my computer.
OneCare, though, has lived-up to their promises. At first I had it on one computer, and it performed a massive back-up that took all night (200 GB's... this was with version 1.0). Subsequent back-ups went quicker for only the new, or changed, files were updated. Adding 2.0 to other computers produced a back-up on individual computers much faster, 1 to 2 hours, depending on the computer, with amounts in the 100 GB range. With 2.0, I've been able to have one centralized back-up on an exterior HP Drive. I, also, have back-ups performed on each computer with various other drives: Seagate's FreeAgent, and Simple-Tech.
In total, I have four computers set-up on OneCare. Two are on the hard-wire, and two are on a WiFi connected to the hard-wire, with my laptop's back-up on another computers external drive (I added the laptop the day after writing this review, which gives me the 4th computer on the network.) One benefit I've seen of using OneCare is that the new computer's version usually recognizes the printers on the network, and it asks me if I want this computer to have access to it. If it doesn't, and I am not a networking whiz, I have just loaded the drivers for a printer that is on the network, and it then easily finds that printer and finishes out connecting the printer with that computer.
Once I set my schedule of the tasks for OneCare, I've let it do it's job, and I've had only one issue, and that's not a OneCare problem... On the iMac, I have both Mac OS X and XP Pro running. With XP Pro, I have OneCare installed. When XP Pro updates itself, it cannot download and install all updates, so OneCare gives me a "yellow," or caution warning. After manually having XP Pro on the iMac finish its download, everything goes "green," which to me is a great place to stop this review.
OneCare has greatly simplified my life. Version 2.0 is better than 1.0., and you can have from one to three computers covered with one subscription. Also, when I extended my subscription, it added the year onto my current subscription several months in advance without my having to call tech support to straighten out a problem. Regarding subscriptions, you have to have a "live.com" ID activating your initial, up to, 3 subscriptions (for me this was a "hotmail.com" address). If you have more computers to cover than 3, you will need a second "live.com" ID. Renewals are around $49.00 for one year's protection for up to three computers. Unlike some virus programs, like Norton's, you cannot uninstall OneCare and then install a newly-purchased, unused copy of OneCare, unless you install it under a different "live.com" ID. (BTW, I learned this the hard way, yet the Microsoft folks were quick at straightening it out (866-ONECARE).)
As the say on TV sometimes, I"m a happy camper, and I'd recommend this product to anyone wanting to protect one computer or several on a LAN. Be sure to check-out the pictures I uploaded to give you a better idea of what type of information you will receive from OneCare because that generally will tell you more than what I did about its capabilities.Windows Live OneCare 2.0 (Up to 3 Users) Overview

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 3-User ReviewI've a happy user of Kaspersky products for several years and most recently I've been very satisfied with Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS) 2009. When I received my renewal notice I checked on line and sure enough, I could purchase the current product Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 3-User for less than it would cost me to renew. However, I was a bit put off and somewhat surprised by some of the negative reviews. Also, from the "Features Matrix" on the KIS 2010 page I saw that it didn't offer much that I could use over their anti-virus product. Selecting Kaspersky Anti-Virus (KAV) also saved me a few dollars. :)
KAV installed without a hitch. It took less than 10 minutes, including a reboot, to install KAV from CD and another couple minutes for the automatic virus database update. It has worked flawlessly (and transparently) ever since. This is what I have come to expect from Kaspersky.
My suggestion is that you review the features of the two 2010 options, KIS and KAV. Norton 360 version 5.0 Premier (3 User) ReviewThe products works.
There are problems installing on a computer with a previous Norton version already installed. Norton makes installlation appear easy in their instructions, however, they don't tell you that you need to uninstall the previous version before installing the new version. So you follow the installation instruction provided in the box and it doesn't install. Then you call the Customer Service number in India and they tell you that you have to uninstall the earlier version before you can install the new version. To do that you must download Norton Uninstall, perform the uninstall and then you can install the new version. It took at least 45 minutes to do this.
It is a flaw that could be avoided if the instructions were written properly and included the uninstall program with the new version. Once installed Norton 360 works fine.

Norton Internet Security 2010 1-User 3PCs ReviewThis is my fifth year of using NIS to protect my home computer and laptop. With the noticeable improvements last version, Norton came back with a bang. While NIS2010 still has some flaws, the good trend seems to continue this year as well.
Installation: Installation was very quick similar to NIS2009. It does require a restart which seems to be the case for most virus protection software. Norton for some reason wants us to download and install parental control separately. just a hazel. If you are an existing NIS user you can upgrade from Norton's upgrade website before deciding to purchase the new version. The upgrade will retain your 2009 subscription and your license will be retained as well. NOTE: If you install from CD, your old license will be over written.
Performance: I don't think NIS2010 is a resource hog. Norton also has performance meters where you can check how much of the system resources are being used by Norton. It seems NIS 2010 uses most system resources only during a complete scan. NIS2010 upgrade virus signatures on the background during idle time just like NIS2009. So you dont feel that it exists. Quick scans during idle times also seem to be pretty quick. I havent noticed any loss of performance in the one week that I have been using NIs2010.
Virus protection: Based on tests by PC world and CNET Norton is only behind the not well known G-DATA internet security in virus detection. I havent used G-DATA so I cant compare them. However, NIS has gotten better at malware detection. It did detect a number of malware that adaware and other security software that I use (e.g. Advanced system care). NIS2009 missed a number of these malware.
Network protection: Although NIS claims that when NIS is installed in all PCs on your network, it can detect and keep a trusted network, it has not worked for me. NIS detected my skype phone (ofcourse didn't protect it), but didn't detect my other PC on the network that also has NIS2010 installed. I am not sure if this 'trust' is of any use to me anyway.
Internet security: Norton identified websites that you visit (amazon, bank and ccard websites for example) as trusted ones based on IP address and other data. so you can be safe you are not entering your password on a phishing website. It is very handy for me. I always look for the 'trusted' sign from both Firefox and NIS before entering my passwords.
Password manager: I dont know if I will trust NIS to be my password manager. You need just one password for Norton and it can manage your other passwords and form filling information. However, it seems to be easy to break in to NIS to obtain the password manager's password list. Although the hacker needs physical access to your computer to do this, it is a concern if your laptop gets stolen for example. NIS2010 offers to have the password manager's list reside on removable media which is a somewhat safer alternative. Norton safe search which identifies safe websites on your serach list is also helpful, but google can do this as well.
Over all, it is a good virus protection for your PC, checks files on the fly, can scan emails and attachemnts, IM text and links. Not very good for password management and parental control.Norton Internet Security 2010 1-User 3PCs Overview

Norton Antivirus 2010 1-User ReviewWhat is there to say, I have found that buying a new version of Norton from Amazon each year is less expensive than buying a "subscription" upgrade from Symantec itself for some reason.
While it is a bit of a "pain" to have to use the Norton Removal Tool before installing the new version, I like doing it since I end up with all the newest definitions, functions, and actaully save money doing it.
I had some trouble last year when the 2009 version also negated access to my MP3 player driver somehow, and I had a heck of a time getting everything working again. This year's version, no problem. Still Norton, still great virus protection, and an even better SONAR attack identifier included in the system.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 3-User ReviewI own a 3-year-old Dell XPS 410 with an Intel Core 2 6700 CPU @ 2.66GHz, equipped with a RAID 0 650 GB dual hard drive, 4 GB DDR2 RAM and an Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB "Direct X 10"-compatible graphics card; for the most part, I have been displeased with the performance of my computer ever since my initial purchase... and this disappointment extended to the performance of my chosen internet security suite, KIS 2007-2010.
After several years of using the miserably sluggish, sporadically buggy Vista Ultimate 32-bit OS, I have recently upgraded my computer to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit (all I can say is WHAT A DIFFERENCE... for those interested, upgrade ASAP). After a clean install, I reluctantly decided to reinstall KIS 2010 and see how well it would perform with my new OS. I wasn't too impressed with KIS 2010's overall performance when I ran it on Vista Ultimate 32-bit (although it was improved over KIS 2009), but running it on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit is another story altogether.
The Good:
A newly-streamlined interface makes it far more user friendly than previous editions;
There's lots of smart configuration tweaks for experienced users;
It uses a lot less system resources to run than the last few versions;
It works extremely well with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit (which I have just upgraded to), with no slowdown or start-up hangs;
Firewall, malware and virus protection is among the best of any current security suite;
Viral/malware/spyware/trojan scanning has little impact on the speed of your computer, meaning you can run a scan simultaneously while doing other tasks on your computer with no problems;
The free software upgrades means you only have to continue renewing your subscription, as opposed to shelling out twice as much for annual software upgrades.
However, there are a few cons:
My experience with KIS 2010 on Vista Ultimate 32-bit was erratic, as most of the time it would work well, but on occasion would tremendously slow down my computer's start-up time, sometimes to the point where I would have no choice but to re-boot the computer;
The spam filter needs work;
The interface could still stand to become a bit more user-friendly for novices in the settings section;
There is an issue with KIS 2010 that blocks the "Windows Experience Index" from completing in Windows 7 (UPDATE: a recent patch finally seems to have corrected the issue);
The "safe run" sandbox virtual environment unfortunately only works on 32-Bit computers;
Scanning is fairly slow with large hard drives.
Still, for the several weeks that I have been using KIS 2010 with Windows 7 64-bit, I must say I am quite pleased with the smooth, quick and reliable performance it has exhibited, as none of the issues that marred KIS 2009 and 2010 while using Vista Ultimate 32-bit are occurring with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.
UPDATE, 5/29/10: It has now been well over seven months since I installed KIS 2010, and it is working better than ever.
Overall, my recommendation is if you are using Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit, I'd give Norton Internet Security 2010 a shot before KIS 2010. However, if you have a comparable (or superior) PC setup to mine and are using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, Kaspersky 2010 Internet Security Suite does its job excellently and I would strongly encourage those in need to give it a try.Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 3-User OverviewThe most advanced Internet security software with premium protection from viruses, spyware hackers and spam. McAfee Total Protection 2012--3 Users ReviewI've purchased and used this product for a few years without much problems until a few days ago when the "Privacy Protection" malware infected my wife's computer. I THOUGHT I had "total protection" with this product so I simply downloaded the latest updates and ran a "deep scan"...only to discover it didn't get rid of the problem.
I then went to MaAfee.com and drilled down to their technical support page. From there, I started a chat dialog with one of their technical support reps who confirmed that their software doesn't protect against this problem. Instead, the tech rep suggest I purchase their "Virus Removal Service" for $89.95/year...so much for McAfee's "total protection".
I then downloaded the free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program from CNET which worked as advertised.
I don't see the point of paying for something that doesn't work as advertised when I can get a better product for free.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Lifetime ReviewI've always been very careful and cautious in browsing the internet. I always make sure all defensive measures are in place to prevent a virus attack. But you can never be too careful. Just recently, I was infected by a really annoying and persistent malware called Security Suite. It creeps in your pc using back door methods and displays itself as an anti-virus software that persistently appears on your deskstop and no amount of clicking close or manual removal will remove it. Once infected, it disables your configured settings, disables your LAN settings--you wont be able to go online. Heck, my infection was so bad, it even disabled my ability to do a manual run of my anti-virus and anti-spyware! To an individual with basic computer skills, this annoyance will make you go to your nearest geeksquad and spend a hefty amount for its removal. But for industrious individuals, there is way and it effectively removes this rogue malware. There is a ton of information online on how to go about removing this infection. It gives you step by step instructions on how to remove them and what utilities you will need to counter this infection. Along with Rkill (Rogue Registry Killer), Malwarebytes effectively removed the rogue Security Suite malware that was bypassed by my separately installed Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs. Apparently, some malwares are immune from detection by your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware software because it is always evolving, their configurations are getting better and better to escape detection. Malwarebytes scanned my system, detected the threat and effectively removed them from my pc. Malwarebytes is a software designed specifically to detect and destroy rogue threats that has infected your pc.
I was truly awed by this product. I have the trial version at the moment but will be upgrading ASAP to the full version to avail of is versatility and all-around protection 24/7. Great, great product and extremely highly recommended!!Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Lifetime Overview

Norton Utilities 15.0 1-User/3PCs ReviewIn one sentence: I did exactly what the *Norton Utilities* dashboard suggested and lost everything on my brand-new computer.
In more than one sentence:
I purchased a computer (Win7 64-bit, home premium) April 2011 and it came with Norton Internet Security already installed with a free trial period. The computer was lightning-fast, the Internet Security program doesn't slow it down at all, and I was very pleased. Those were the days! Then I went online to sign up for a year's worth of protection. As I was doing this, the Norton website offered *Norton Utilities* for an additional $10.00. I figured it could not be a bad idea, so I added that to my cart and downloaded the program.
When I opened Norton Utilities to look around, I saw a 'dashboard' that told me my system 'health' was not optimal but which helpfully offered an option so the Utilities program could 'optimize' the computer's performance. Operating strictly from the Norton dashboard, I did EXACTLY WHAT THE PROGRAM SAID I NEEDED TO DO (I cannot emphasize this enough), which was to click on a button to optimize disk space (or words to that effect--what it ultimately did was run disk defragmenter), and then....my computer died. Couldn't boot up in safe mode, system was unable to find a restore point, couldn't do a system repair---spent half the night just getting Windows 7 restored. My computer has not been the same since this happened.
I went to Norton's website only to discover that the SAME PROBLEM goes as far back as 2009 and has been documented on their own boards in 2011 for version 15 of Utilities. I am completely gobsmacked that not only has Norton been unable to repair this problem in all this time, but they continue to inflict the problem on unsuspecting users. Seems as if all they would've had to do is disable that part of their Utilities optimizer if the OS is Windows 7.
Please, I implore you- if you decide to order Norton Utilities anyway: make sure you have your system restore disks handy, perform a full backup right before you install Norton Utilities, and make sure to have Norton's customer support phone number at hand. And for goodness' sake, don't let that smug little dashboard shame you into blindly doing what it asks.
I really hope that this review will help to inform your decision before you purchase Norton Utilities for a computer with the same OS as mine. As I said earlier, I'm a fan of Norton Internet Security, but I'll do a lot of research before I *ever* buy any other Norton product.Norton Utilities 15.0 1-User/3PCs Overview

Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 2012 - 3 Users ReviewI have used Trend Micro's security solutions in the past and there have been both good and bad versions that have hit my desk. I was hopeful that this version would be a big improvement from the last version I tried (the 2010 edition) and while it is there are important considerations that I believe make this package overpriced.
I loaded Titanium Internet Security 2012 on a 32-bit Windows XP target, with a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 with 2 GB RAM. This system cannot be considered cutting edge by most standards anymore but it is sufficient for running this security suite.
Although the requirements on the packaging list a number of acceptable browsers for Titanium to work, what it doesn't tell you is that MSIE version 7.0 or better MUST be installed for the package to even load. Keep this in mind, as it is easy to get very frustrated when loading this package on an older target. Once I loaded MSIE 8.0 on the target machine I had no more issues with installation - it installed relatively smoothly and it came up without a fight.
Trend has steadily improved their user interface and Titanium 2012 has a very simple, straightforward and aesthetically pleasing interface. The dashboard gives immediate access to the most important functions right away - scanning, parental controls and utilities/settings. I did run into one quirk with the interface, though. When a password is set and I try to access a feature that requires me to enter the password, the password dialog box has a tendency to pop under the dashboard and it is impossible to bring it forward. I am not sure why this is the case.
The last version of Trend Micro's security offerings that I tried was the 2010 version and I had issues with the firewall. Trend solved that issue - there's no firewall in this package. Instead, it integrates with Windows firewall and adds some extra layers on top of it. Whether or not this is a good thing is a matter of personal experience. I am a little wary of the Windows built-in firewall (particularly on Windows XP) but in testing it has held up acceptably as a port blocker. That said, Trend's pricing remains at the same level as that of other vendors' offerings - which include firewalls - so I view this package as overpriced.
I like Trend's scanner and have been impressed with its raw speed for years, even back when it was a DOS product (yes, Trend really has been around that long). This time around the scanner seemed to be slightly sluggish but it still cruises through the file system at a good clip. It has been a very long time since I have run into an issue where my antivirus has found something other than cookies and as such Titanium doesn't have much to find. Based on previous experience I suspect it will neutralize the threat and then notify.
The parental controls are one feature of security suites about which I care and Trend has for several iterations offered a good solution. Titanium keeps this going. The interface to the parental controls is easy to navigate, it's a snap to turn on and off categories and to set up times when the Internet is accessible, and when trying to access a forbidden site it is very quick to block access and notify the user. So far I have been very pleased with the operation of the parental controls.
Compared to my last experience with Trend Micro's security suites (2 years ago) this is a good improvement. It seems to be stable, responsive and accessible. I do question, though, Trend's decision to drop their own firewall in favor of the Windows firewall without adjusting their asking price. With a number of other suites out there that include a firewall in the package for the same price, it seems to me that this suite is a little pricey for what you get.Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 2012 - 3 Users Overview

Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 2011 - 3 User Review[original review - see update below]
I have used Trend for many years. It seemed like they finally got it right with 2009. It was quick, reliable, and had lots of options. After that subscription expired I got a notice to download this new "Titanium" thing (billed automatically by Digital River - that won't happen again!).
I downloaded it and it installed okay, but there are practically no advanced settings. It is so dumbed-down. You cannot really fine tune the scanning any more, and there is no ability to control the home network the way you could with the previous version. About all you can do is set a few parental controls and very, very simple filtering.
It also seemed to slow down Firefox briefly. It's like Firefox would be unresponsive for the first ten seconds or so before it was usable. Not sure if it was due to the antivirus but the correlation was there - it started as soon as I installed the new version.
Despite my misgivings, I was about to bite the bullet and go ahead and upgrade the wife's computer. Before I did, though, I checked the subscription status and saw that IT WAS VALID FOR ANOTHER YEAR! Apparently, installing Titanium was optional, and the previous version was still eligible for regular updates! They did not TELL me that! So I just removed Titanium and rolled back into the other version, which installed flawlessly and now I am happy for another year.
I had some trouble uninstalling Titanium on my third computer. It took a couple of tries, and each time it would hang at 13%. I had to do a hard reset and then retry. For some reason, I suspected the password I had set up for Titanium was the issue, so I removed it and then the uninstall went to completion. That was a bit worrisome.
Anyway, sorry, I just cannot recommend this product. Maybe it's okay and really does work but I do not like the lack of advanced control. For basic users it may be just fine. But for me, I am going to ride the current version out to whatever its end-of-life is, then unless Trend gives us some better control over the behavior, I will look for something else.

It's now six months into the legacy version of Trend, and I have having to think about what to move to next. I have evaluated ESET, Vipre, BitDefender, and Kapersky, and all of them leave me a bit underwhelmed. ESET seems the best of the bunch, though a tad expensive. Vipre is nice and light but has too many boxes asking me to accept this or that action (if you disable the accept box option, then you have to create a rule for everything that isn't just running a program). Bit Defender and Kapersky are just a bit too slow and bloated, and Kapersky's scan just dragged. So, at renewal time, I may just jump on the Titanium bandwagon. It's either that, ESET, or free MS Security Essentials.
I really do not think Titanium is "bad", it just did not give you much control. It really is a totally different program from what it was before, and is REALLY different from the rest. But I tried the latest evaluation version and the slowdown in FireFox seemed much less of an issue. So maybe I just need to readjust my expectations.

Kaspersky Pure 3-User ReviewI was given the opportunity to evaluate Kaspersky PURE on computers where I had been running Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 and Norton Internet Security 2010. The two computers I used for the evaluation were a 6 year old laptop running Windows XP Professional with a 2 Ghz processor and 2 GB of RAM and a 2 year old netbook running Windows XP Professional with an Intel Atom 1.6 Ghz processor and 2 GB of RAM. Both computers have about 10 GB of free space on the hard drives. Neither of these computers has significant processing power or disc space by today's standards and so the use of a internet security package that provides excellent protection but does not bog down the system is a priority. I found that Kaspersky PURE excelled at this.
When I first tried to install PURE, I received an alert that I needed to remove other Kaspersky programs prior to the installation of PURE. This required a reboot of my machine after Kaspersky Internet Security was removed. Otherwise, the installation of PURE was straightforward and easy. My netbook does not have an optical drive, but the packaging with the installation disc noted that I could download the program from the Kaspersky website.
As part of the installation, you are asked to participate in the Kaspersky Security Network which allows anonymous data to be sent from your computer to Kaspersky Lab. The data sent to Kaspersky Lab is used to create a behavioral engine to further strengthen security safeguards. I didn't want to send data to Kaspersky and so I did not accept the terms and conditions of joining the Kaspersky Security Network and was able to proceed with the installation.
Once PURE was installed, I received alerts that the program's databases were out of date and that updating was required. Updating the program can be done manually or automatically. If you choose manual update, PURE will start to alert you that the databases are out of date if you do not update for a few days. A really nice feature of the Kaspersky update is that it will update even with a slow internet connection. Norton, on the other hand timed out if the internet connection wasn't fast enough during updates. This is a very nice feature by Kaspersky to allow for users with slow internet connections.
Full scans on my computers can take up to several hours. I have noticed that the scanning time is faster with PURE than with Kaspersky Internet Security. Unlike Norton Internet Security, using PURE I could easily access a detailed report of events such as banners that were blocked, scans that were performed and applications that were controlled. This level of detail in the report may not be needed, but it is nice that it is available if you want to see what PURE has been doing.
A very good feature that was not included in Kaspersky Internet Security is the Open Vulnerabilities Scan. This scan found outdated versions of Firefox, Java and even Photoshop on my computer. I was given a link to which the problems with the older versions of these programs were listed and a link that I could follow to get the latest version if I didn't want the software to upgrade myself. The scan also found vulnerabilities on my computer such as allowing autorun on usb drives or problems with Internet Explorer. I think that the Open Vulnerabilities Scan is a very good feature and an important part of the defense for a computer. Although I am pleased with the scan, I am disappointed that Kaspersky did not make the Open Vulnerabilities Scan a part of the full scan. Not everyone may run the Vulnerabilities Scan as a separate option. An annoyance with this feature was that it continued to list Java and Photoshop as being vulnerable even after I updated the correct version of these programs. I am not sure if the scan did not recognize that the latest version had been installed or if there really is a problem.
In comparison to Norton Internet Security, PURE is very light on the computer resources. Norton IS was a resource hog and there were times when my computer would be running full out due to something that Norton was running. In Kaspersky PURE runs virus scans run quietly in the background.
In comparison to Kaspersky Internet Security 2011, PURE includes a password manager and is supposed to be better at guarding your home network. PURE also included the Open Vulnerabilities Scan. A full comparison of PURE and Internet Security can be found on the Kaspersky website.
The password manager if a good option for people who want a repository of their passwords. Access to the password manager can be by a password you type, the presence of a Bluetooth device with the key or a USB device. You can also generate a list of passwords onto a USB device to take with you which would be handy if you need to access secure websites from different computers.
Other features that PURE offers beyond virus and vulnerability protection include:
- Backup and restore to backup the hard drive to an external drive
- Parental Control
- Remote control of other computers on the home network
- Create containers where sensitive files can be stored and encrypted
- Virtual keyboard to defeat keyboard loggers by giving you a virtual keyboard on your screen that you can use to type in passwords for banking websites, for example.
- Safe run which allows for suspicious programs to be run in a protected environment to prevent the programs from gaining access to personal data.
- Anti banner
PURE is a very nice security package, but it does have some minuses:
- Scheduling scans is not intuitive. You need to click on a button marked manual to change the virus scans from manual to scheduled and unless you know to click on the button. Kaspersky should have made it much easier to schedule a virus scan.
- I had to change the default setting to allow for the full scan of USB drives when they are fist detected. I strongly believe that full scans of USB drives should be the default setting with the allowance that the user can change the setting. The only time that Kaspersky has found viruses during its scans is when I have plugged in a USB drive that I have used them to get data from someone else's computer.
- Open Vulnerabilities Scan not part of the full scan
- Checks the vulnerabilities of Internet Explorer, but not of other browsers such as Firefox, Opera or Chrome.
- The Open Vulnerabilities Scan does not recognize when programs with vulnerabilities are updated to the latest version.
- The database of malicious scripts has not been updated by Kaspersky since September, 2010 which means that at the time of the writing of this review, it has not been updated in five months.

Installation of KIS 2012 was quite speedy. At the beginning of the installation process the program looked for any conflicting security programs that were already installed and to my surprise, it actually found remnants of Microsoft Security Essentials that I had previously uninstalled. After this was cleared up, it was a simple case of activating the product online and viola!, I was up and running. Albeit needing a definition update.
Once KIS was up and running I downloaded the latest update, which took quite a while, and then gave it a quick scan. As this is the first 2012 malware product I've looked at thus far, it is difficult to be objective as to how Kaspersky's latest will compare with others that are released in the latter part of the year, but my initial impression is quite positive. KIS 2012 is jam-packed full of all the features that you would expect to see in such a program and definitely offers quite a significant level of extra protection when compared to standalone Anti-Virus programs. The interface is nice and simple to understand, with all the typical items you'll need easily accessible.
Features

To say that Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 is feature packed would be quite an understatement. This program has everything up to and including someone to fold your laundry. (Ok, I made that last part up.). Personification aside, it's quite packed.
Here's a quick list of the more important features KIS offers:

* Spam protection (everybody knows this one)
* Application control (Allows you to setup rules stating which programs can run and which can't)
* Firewall (Much more thorough than the built-in Windows application)
* Network monitoring (monitors all traffic on your internal network)
* Network defense (provides protection of internal network mentioned above)
* Parental controls (Keep kids from visiting unwanted sites)
* Ad blocking (No more relentless male enhancement ad's!)
* Gaming profile (Keeps your system responsive while playing resource heavy games)
* Quick response to new threats via cloud (stored on the internet) protection
* Virtual keyboard (Defends against keyloggers)
Effectiveness

I tested KIS 2012 by visiting a list of malware-infested sites (The list can be found online, but due to the nature of said list, I won't be posting it in this review. I will say, however that the words "malware" and "domain" in Google return interesting results. But I don't recommend visiting unless you absolutely know what you're doing). KIS was tested by visiting 18 infected URLs from this list and all were successfully identified as a threat and stopped before any damage could be done. This is obviously a quite small test sample compared to the thousands of threats that are out in the wild everyday but it does showcase program effectiveness and gives me a nice warm and fuzzy.
Resource Performance

I noticed no huge memory drains, nor any hit in performance while the program was running in the background and only a small hit while actively scanning. Kaspersky has long been known to be "resource friendly" and tradition continues on this years product. As long as you're running a machine made within the past 5 or 6 years, you shouldn't have any issues.
Negatives

I'm being absolutely honest when I say there aren't many. My only real annoyance was the speed of the first update of the database and the program. It took quite a while. Somewhere upwards of 10 minutes. The first update was around 100mb. But after that, updates were much, MUCH quicker.
As stated previously, the program has a metric TON of features and various settings. Something a novice really shouldn't delve into, with the exception of one setting. The program is set by default NOT TO SCAN if running on battery power. This is for scheduled scans only, it looks as if realtime protection is not affected. I can understand why they include this option, but this could potentially be an issue, so I reccomend turning this feature off in the program settings.
Conclusion

As a veteran of just about every known malware software known to man, I can happily say KIS 2012 really impressed me. It installs quickly, does it's job well and doesn't get in the way and is packed with features. The non techie crowd should have no problems getting Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 up and running fairly quickly and keeping their systems safe.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 - 3 Users ReviewAntivirus can be a controversial subject. If you ask 20 different computer entusiasts or IT professionals what the best AV product is, you will not only get 20 different answers, but almost as many angry shouts about how horrible everybody else's picks were. Similarly, and only to make matters worse, if you do your research and read the "10 best antivirus products of 2011" articles then you will see that the rankings change all the time. Every year it seems some "who-the-heck-is-that" antivirus product makes it on to the number 1 or 2 spot for the major roundups. More frustrating is the fact that from site to site and review to review, the conclusions can be schizophrenic--with one site's number 1 pick being the other site's worst of the crop. From my own experience, I will tell you that no antivirus is a silver bullet, they all will catch some malware that others miss, and vice versa. Beware of fanboys and beware too of haters. But most of all, beware of anyone who gives you their opinion based on a "story", be it sad or happy. The 1 star reviews angry because they got a rootkit and the glowing reviews saying they've been happily using Antivirus 2010 since forever and have never had a problem.
There's your qualification and sobriety check. Now, here's my measured opinion. I'm a long time Norton user that first came across Kaspersky a few years back when Norton products were getting worse every year. Norton saved themselves with a fabulous 2010 release (and a 2011 to rival it), but Kaspersky who was once a dark horse antivirus no one had heard of has stuck around and made a name for itself. It's a good product and I don't hesitate to recommend it. I often recommend Kaspersky in business environments, but this is more due to the superiority of their Server Administration Kit than their AV Engine itself. Still, their AV consistently ranks among the best, and no I don't care where they happen to fall out of the top 10 in a given year. Try not to get caught up in the horse race there, as there simply is no good objective way to quantifiably say one AV is better at protecting you than another. I've found their protection to be solid and reliable and among the best out there, but you can drive the world's safest car and still get killed in an accident. Kaspersky 2012 is easy to install and configure and doesn't seem to have as many potentially perplexing options as Norton does deep in its bowels. 2012 is not especially efficient (Norton 2011 and Eset's Nod32 seem to have much smaller footprints), but Kaspersky does have a nice Gamer mode that can be flipped on when you want to play games. I've found Kaspersky has difficulty installing on systems previously inhabited (I would say infected, but then my own biases would show) by AVG or Macafee, but that is as much the fault of those products as it is their fault, and its a common problem for one AV to interfere with the installation of another, even after it's "uninstalled". I find that Kaspersky is one of the quietest AV products I've used and doesn't nag you the way many products tend to do.
All in all, there are lots of decent AV products out there, some of them free, but there's only 3 I would wholeheartedly endorse with my personal and professional reputation on the line and Kaspersky is one of them.Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 - 3 Users OverviewKaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 is the backbone of your PC's security system, delivering real-time protection from the latest malware and viruses. Norton 360 5.0 1-User/3PCs ReviewAfter running Norton 360 v4 for nearly a year across two Windows 7 PCs, I have been very satisfied with its performance and stability. I was looking forward to upgrading to v5, and extending my subscription.
Functionally, Norton 360 v5 is very similar to v4 with a few additions:
- improved SONAR protection (blocked 100% of virus/malware threats in Dennis Technology test)
- updated Download Insight for even greater protection / scan of downloaded files
- refined user interface
From an effectiveness and performance perspective, I don't think you can get better than Norton 360 v5. It scans transparently in the background, with notification updates that show from the taskbar, without interrupting your work. Unlike other anti-virus software I'd used in the past, I didn't notice significant impact on my work when it's installed and running. When you download a file, the new Insight product will not only scan, but will let you know how many others have safely used the same file. It gives you a good level of confidence.
Just like the prior version, Norton 360 v4 installs easily, keeps out of the way for most operations, and hasn't caused any incompatibility problems for me on two different computers, including a MacBook Pro running Apple's BootCamp and Windows 7. For the price, you get a good value with an extensive set of capabilities including AntiVirus, AntiSpyware, basic Identity Protection, Internet Explorer Password Vault, PC Tuneup and Registry Cleaner, and Backup. The 3-computer edition is a particularly good value if you compare it against at the single-computer price.
The bad news is, if you're a power user you're going to be frustrated with the lack of options available, and even some features you're used to in earlier Norton utilities. The user interface is completely wizard-driven. Even when you try to configure advanced Settings, you are presented with a Wizard interface. You cannot, for example, choose the disks you want to scan in a VirusScan. If you want to scan just a particular volume or folder, you can right-click on it and choose the Scan option from the Norton submenu, but that's not exactly intuitive.
If there is a particular weakness in Norton360, it is the Backup capabilities which are very basic. There is no capability to clone or ghost your entire computer. And, it seems like Norton is trying to bait you into using their online file service (2GB free but only works on Windows). It is definitely not a replacement for more comprehensive backup utilities like Acronis TrueImage.
What will drive you mad, after a year, is the price that Norton dares to charge for a subscription renewal. You're better off coming back to Amazon and re-purchasing Norton 360 for another year.
And, if you choose to buy another copy of Norton 360 - BEWARE - check the number of days remaining on your existing subscription, and don't install / apply the new key until you have no time left. If you install before, the clock resets to 366 days (because Norton now thinks you have 2 different keys, each with their own subscription). I was able to get Symantec support to finally correct this and extend the subscription to include the remaining time from my prior version. But it took over AN HOUR working with their off-shore support by chat. It seemed like the support person was talking to multiple people at the same time, and what should have been a simple 5-minute resolution took much much longer. You wonder if Symantec support is trying to discourage people from using them at all. Norton Internet Security 2012 - 1 User 3PC ReviewNorton woke-up in 2009/10 making the interface user-friendly and its signature updates running in the background making the software less resource-hogging. It's continuing the same trend this year (NIS2012) with a little less cluttered interface - meaning most features automated for the novice user, but you have to dig in deep to make advanced changes. It works well with Windows7 as well as Win XP if you care (I don't have Vista - so cannot comment about that).
1. Installation: As in the recent versions of NIS, installation was a snap. It took under 2 minutes, but needed a restart. If you have existing license for NIS, download the update from support -> check for new version menu item from within NIS. You can update the license number from the disk later when your license is about to expire. In previous version(s), NIS overwrote existing license period if you upgraded from disk. I havent checked it on this version (I still have about 90 days left, too risky!!).
2. Interface: The main interface is less cluttered, but a new addition is a big status window (floating gadget) on the upper right corner of your screen with large buttons for different menus. Most buttons on these menus are for other Norton products unrelated to NIS (annoying). For example button for on-line back-up (costs extra!) or mobile protection for android (free), parental control (free) etc. I havent found an easy way to get rid of this yet! (Alright! It's easy. There is a close button next to it and if you close it, it does not reappear after a restart).
3. Setting up: Most of the settings are done by default and should be fine for the average user. For example how often to scan your computer, what time of the day, which files to allow to connect to the internet etc. If you need advanced settings, most of those are just a couple of clicks away and mostly easy to find. There are some menu items that could have been done better. If you had existing trusted network information from previous NIS, those are retained which is good.
4. Security: As in previous versions, NIS was good at detecting most of the commonly bothering cookies and adware. Everytime you download a file, it is checked for viruses and if it is from a trusted website and there is a pop-up saying it is clean. Similarly, like previous versions, Norton safe search marks results from google searches as safe or not. you can check website security by looking for norton trusted symbol e.g. bank sites or amazon.com - that way you wont enter your password in a phising site.
5. What's new? Like mentioned above the annoying floating gadget is new. The primary interface is less cluttered but at the same time advanced settings are easily accessible from different menus. The new version does appear to be a little faster than 2011. might be significant on older systems.
