Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 & Adobe Premiere Elements 4 ReviewThe Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 and Premiere Elements 4 bundle is one of the best values for the home photo/video editor. I use the full version of Photoshop and a fairly pricey video editing (Sony Vegas) package at our business, but needed a powerful yet inexpensive (a relative term, I know) package to use at home. Here are my observations on each package:
Photoshop Elements 6:
At first glance I was disappointed and thought I had made a big mistake as the default interface is fairly simplistic (which is a GOOD thing for most users). Being used to the some of the more advance features (such as "Curves") and the ability to load in templates, the one click tools (while great for the casual user) were a little underwhelming. Not to fear though, the more powerful tools are still available by getting into a different editing mode, which I would have found faster if I had read the somewhat skimpy manual. All in all, it is nice to be able to "one click fix" all of my family photos, and still have the ability to get more powerful tools for the work I bring home with me. This is a fantastic value for the money!
Premiere Elements 4:
Since most of my editing is done on higher dollar packages at work, I was just looking for a home software package to quickly assemble clips, make photo slide shows, and to convert clips for upload to YouTube. This package surprised me with it's drag and drop ease of use. It is fantastic for the home user and does exactly what it says it is going to do. One note about the YouTube integration, it is nothing short of fantastic! I had a clip that was just too big to upload and my expensive work software just was too hard to get the file size and quality they require. Using Premiere Elements, I was able to drop in the large clip, indicate it was for YouTube, and the software did the rest...Including logging in and uploading it to my account right from inside the program. No muss, no fuss, just as advertised!
All in all, I think this is one of the best home user packages available. Simple enough for the basic user with access to the more powerful tools if needed.Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 & Adobe Premiere Elements 4 OverviewAdobe Photoshop Elements 6 & Adobe Premiere Elements 4 software combines two powerful yet easy-to-use products to deliver the most complete photo and video-editing solution. Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 plus Adobe Premiere Elements ReviewI am a pretty decent digital photographer/videographer. I take a lot of photos, film a lot of video of my one-year-old, and pretty much know my way around a computer. I've been using Adobe products for quite some time, and when I heard they were coming out with a all-in-one video/photo suite, I was intrigued since my Pinnacle Studio product really had some problems and I was getting frustrated. So, when I saw Amazon had this product available and I could transfer all of my Adobe Photoshop Album pics right into the new Elements program, I was sold. And I am sure glad I made the purchase.
First, the Elements feature. If you have tons of digital pictures on your hard drive and spend minutes looking for individual ones to print out, e-mail, etc., then this program will suit you perfectly. All of your digital pictures can be tagged (events, family, etc.), and then be "sub-tagged" for even more personalization. It's quick, easy, and efficient. Also, photos can be e-mailed easily with automatic compression and cool e-mail "themes." In addition, the program lets you simply take a photo and color-correct it with one mouse click, add neat effects, eliminate red-eye (the best on the market), use the "healing brush" (ingenious) to omit perfections, and even splice and create all sorts of interesting photo montages, calendars, slideshows -- you name it. Elements is a digital photo enthusiast's dream. It has never been easier to get your pictures organized, fix them all up, send them to your family, and archive them on a CD/DVD or create an interesting slideshow, complete with music and animated fonts.
This brings us to Premiere, the video portion of the suite. As long as you have a digital video camera with IEEE 1394 connection ("firewire"), it's simple to get going. I transfered about 30 minutes of raw video, added music, did extensive edits and burned a DVD (4 minute video) in about two days, part-time, which came out exactly how I wanted it. Simply plug the camera into your PC, hit a button, and your entire video is put into a timeline view without any hiccups. Then, edit away. Add transitions, still videos, title screens, digital photos, music, slideshows -- the choices are practically endless. Different tracks allow two videos to be shown at once, providing neat picture-in-picture effects, floating text, animations, nifty titles, fades, etc. Integrated DVD burning with the ability to create your own professionally-designed DVD menu screen is also a major plus. Archive and store all of your videos and images in one place, whether they're from your vacation, the kids' activities -- whatever! Premiere makes it simple, and to date, I have not had one crash, hiccup, lost frame, or rendering problem. I have a dedicated hard drive (60 GB) for all of my video/audio work, and I recommend anybody interested in doing these types of processor-intensive tasks do the same. Premiere/Elements is installed right on this drive, so I have plenty of room/memory to keep the thing perfectly oiled and moving.
Adobe makes great products, and the Photoshop Elements/Premiere suite is no exception. Highly recommended.Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 plus Adobe Premiere Elements OverviewAdobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements Image Video Edit Software Suite - Digital still and motion photography seems to be converging. Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 ReviewWhen Adobe skipped version the Mac with version 7 of Elements, I wondered if there would be another upgrade. I'm glad that 8 came out, and at the same time as the Windows version. I often wait a version or two between upgrading but there's enough here to make the new purchase worth it to me.
I'm a fan of this program. It is all that most photographers need. Actually it does much more than most people who own it ever get to. If you are not a graphic designer, Elements is great. I've said this in prior reviews of Elements but it's a much better value than the CS version of Photoshop and up to some heavy duty image editing. You won't be able to edit photos more effectively with the full version of Photoshop. I've challenged pros to do editing with Photoshop CS that I can't do with Elements and so far haven't had to eat crow. That's not saying that Elements has *all* the tools that CS does. But Photoshop has always offered multiple ways to get things done and Elements has enough tools to do the job. The photo tools are there, though.
With this version there are some compelling new features. The first I'll mention is not really emphasized in the Adobe marketing info, but is a wonderful set of tools for photo editing. That's Adobe Camera Raw 5.5 (ACR). ACR isn't actually part of Elements but included with the program. It basically gives the same editing tools available in Adobe's Lightroom. I often use ACR to edit photos and get the majority of my work done there. This is a quality addition that most people don't know about. The upgrade in ACR from version 4 which comes with Elements 6 to version 5 adds some really useful photo editing tools.
Another add on to Elements is Adobe Bridge, which a lot of pros use to sort and catalog their images and video. It's also a quality program in its own right and the center of my photo workflow. It can be well integrated with Elements and is probably worth the cost of the whole bundle on its own. It also plays nice with iPhoto if you want to keep your pictures stored there.
Now to Photoshop Elements 8. Besides the upgrade to ACR, the updates that our Windows brethren got in version 7 have been included, as well as some excellent tools for making composite photos from multiple images. They're slick and very easy to use. There are some one step editing tools that are new to the Mac version and a totally cool way to squeeze a photo into a smaller space without squashing the import parts of the picture. The photomerge can save the day with group shots. Simply take several pictures. The use Elements to switch the picture of your brother in law with his eyes closed for one where he looks awake. It's seamless and easy.
Elements makes sharing your images easier, too with streamlined web albums and slideshow capibility. There's even a send to iPhone function.
Any down sides? Well, Adobe's installer seems to take forever and it helps to have a fairly new computer with a decent amount of RAM. Elements wants some power to perform quickly. And the program is complicated. Though it is much easier to learn than Photoshop CS4. The upside is that since it's so popular there are a lot of good books, web tutorials and classes to help.
This is a solid upgrade to an already excellent program. I recommend it strongly. It's has all the editing power that most photographers need, without the price tag of the full Photoshop. I'd even go so far as to say that if you even question if it's good enough it is. Photoshop CS4 is a professional program with extra professional features, few of which are actually photo realted.Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 OverviewThe newest version of the #1 selling consumer photo-editing software, Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 combines power and simplicity so you can easily go beyond the basics to tell great stories with your photos. Adobe Premiere Elements 7 ReviewI am NOT a newbie to video editing, in fact I have been an avid user of Adobe Premier Elements for some time now...with ver. 4 being the most recent before the version 7 purchase. Let me get this out in the open, I was disgusted with Adobe PE7 at first because I was trying to edit and burn footage from my same old camcorders....footage that Adobe PE3 and 4 handled just fine. I have tried MULTIPLE projects now and have yet to be able to render or burn a DVD using the MP4 (avc H.264) footage from my Sanyo Xacti or my Samsung NV24HD. Even worse I cannot keep a project of any size open long enough to do any editing before the program gives me a "low on memory" warning and then crashes! Version 4 was crazy enough, as I was always sure to hit the "save" button many times while editing, but this version 7 is a joke for these formats. I can't even add the MP4 files to the time-line without it crashing. Now for the good part and why I give this release a 4 star. I was asked by a buddy to edit and burn some youth football footage from his newly acquired Canon HF10 with SDHC card. I was excited. Although I had no clue what an .mts file was Adonbe PE 7 not only recognized it and imported it quickly...but I proceeded to edit both video and audio (together and separately)as well as burn to a regular DVD (not BluRay). It was a great experience. The only reason I won't give this a 5 star is that Adobe still shows this PE7 program as being compatible with MP4 and I beg to differ as a user...but if you are going the direction I want to go, AVCHD and BluRay, etc...Adobe did something right in this category. I will add that while i am not a big fan of the GUI of Pinnacle Studio Plus 12 it has handled ALL of my format types without a problem. I am running Vista Basic on a Celeron 1.60Ghz processor (Dell Inspiron 530 desktop) with 4GB of ram.
UPDATE: Now that I have purchased my OWN Canon HF10 AVCHD camcorder (1080 high-def) Adobe PE7 is my go-to program for this type of footage. Again, it handles the AVCHD / .mts file format flawlessly. Check out my other reviews for some other programs I have tried like Corel VideoStudio X2 and Magix - Movie Edit pro 14. If you are going to be working with AVCHD, certainly any of the Canon HF series camcorders that put .mts on sdhc flash cards...then I believe Adobe Premier Elements 7 is the best option.Adobe Premiere Elements 7 OverviewPremier Elements 7 WIN

Adobe Premiere Elements 8 ReviewAfter upgrading to Premiere Elements 8, I initially had problems similar to what other reviewers have reported. The application was crashing regularly, rendering it unusable. After I spent some time sleuthing (searching the web for forum posts where users were discussing this problem) and figured out how to fix it. Turns out, the problem was related to one of the NVIDIA drivers for my graphics card (see further below for possible fixes if you are experiencing similar issues and use a graphics card with an NVIDIA chipset). Now PRE8 works like a breeze, and I'm enjoying the new "smart" features and the integration with the Elements Organizer that another reviewer also commented on in her exhaustive review.
For those interested in my system's specs, I'm running PRE8 on a Windows 7 64-bit machine w/ an AMD Athlon Dual Core Processor at 2.50 GHz, 8 GB RAM and an ASUS EN8600GTTOP graphics card (which uses the NVIDIA 8600GT chipset) w/ 256 MB RAM.
Since fixing the compatibility problem w/ the NVIDIA driver, I have completed several short video projects (between 4 and 8 minutes long) for which I used various of the "special effects" in PRE8 and did some rotation and cropping, and have used a couple of different output formats (flv and wmv). Of course, I make sure that I close any other resource-hungry applications, such as Firefox and Outlook, before I start PRE8. I have really not experienced any further problems in terms of crashes or sluggishness (hence "works like a breeze"). I have not edited any HD projects using PRE8 since I don't shoot or view HD video.
If you are on the fence at all about this product and/or are wondering if your system specs are sufficient to run PRE8 without trouble, I definitely recommend installing the trial version first that can be downloaded from the Adobe website. I believe the trial runs 30 days, enough time to put the program through the wringer and see how it holds up on your particular system.
For those interested in giving Premiere Elements 8 a try but who experience the frequent crashes and use a graphics card with an NVIDIA GPU (graphics processing unit), here are the possible fixes that I found during my search:
1. If you don't use the NVIDIA 3D goggles (i.e., most people), uninstall the NVIDIA Stereoscopic 3D Driver (in Windows 7/Vista: Control Panel > Programs and Features; in XP: Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs). To reiterate, this will *only* uninstall the driver for the NVIDIA 3D goggles. (Amazon doesn't like people posting URLs for other web sites in their product reviews, but if you want to see the source, search for a thread called "Premiere Elements 8 keeps closing or crashing" in the Adobe Support Forums and scroll down to post #8). [This is the fix that worked for me.]
2. Another possible solution to some compatibility issues that has been reported (see post #39 in the thread "Cannot restart Premiere Elements 8" in the Adobe Support Forums) is turning off the "Threaded Optimization" feature for Premiere Elements in the NVIDIA Control Panel (right-click on empty space on your desktop, click on "NVIDIA Controp Panel"; in menu pane on left, select "Manage 3D Settings"; click on the "Program Settings" tab; browse to and select "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 8.0\Adobe Premiere Elements.exe" (Note: do *not* select "Adobe Premiere Elements 8.0.exe" as this won't do the trick) and click "Open" [Note: for 32-bit systems, replace "Program Files (x86)" with just "Program Files"]; click "Apply" and exit NVIDIA Control Panel.)
3. Lastly, of course it's also always worth a making sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed on your computer. Check the NVIDIA website to see if there are any updates available.
Hope this will help someone who is experiencing compatibility issues w/ PRE8 and their NVIDIA drivers.

Adobe Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements 7 ReviewI have the Adobe Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements 7 duo installed on my VISTA powered laptop and have worked with them several days. I started using Adobe Photoshop Elements version 3 a number of years ago and thought it was good, but somewhat complicated to use with a long learning curve involved. The new Elements version 7 retains most of the original features and complexity but is upgraded and the tools are more sophisticated in how they are applied and the results they produce.

Some reviewers of Adobe Photoshop Elements have upgraded from version 6 and complain that there is little new in the latest edition. That may be true, but there is a noticeable difference between version 3 and this most recent rendition. One of the most obvious features to appear in version 7 is the addition of on-line storage, photo sharing and available tutorials.

There is an extra charge for Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 "Plus" which provides additional on-line storage space. This is not to imply that Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 "basic" is one of those come-on condensed programs that get bundled in new computers. Photoshop Elements 7 out of the box is a full blown photo editing program and stays that way without any additional charge unless that additional on-line storage is desired. The downside to this option to invest in the "Plus" feature is how the program startup screen nags to join every time the program is opened. So far I haven't found a way to say no thanks--don't bother me with this again.
The Adobe Photoshop Elements programs are consistently rated number one in digital photo editing reviews and that is probably deserved. I recently purchased, installed and started to use the Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate program for editing my photos. This program is often rated number two by reviewers, but it is cheaper than the Adobe software. I like the Corel program a lot, but the Adobe program is equally good and maybe just a bit better in some ways--fancier and more colorful screens for one thing. However, for the advanced amateur digital photographer like me the difference is a matter of which program is easier to use. I think that may be a matter of personal choice in this case.

Now for the Adobe PREMIER Elements 7: This is the program one needs in order to download, construct, edit and produce video/slide show projects. It is the DVD (and Blu-ray) maker lots of editing programs lack. I have previously used a Roxio video making program and found it buggy and without all of the flexibility I wanted. The Adobe Premier Elements 7 program has more options and creative features. It is certainly easier to use than the Roxio software.
As with all of the DVD maker programs, one must have the right computing capacity and the proper DVD burning drive. Older wimpy computers will probably have trouble with Premier Elements 7 and apparently crashes are not uncommon if there isn't enough RAM available. I have the software loaded into a VISTA laptop and not had any problems of note. Saving a project as one goes along is a good thing to do just in case.

This software is primarily and obviously well designed for making movie type videos. However, I have used my Adobe Premier Elements 7 program mostly for creating slide shows from my collections of digital photos and it does a great job. It allows me to organize my pictures add transitions between them in a slide show, put background music in and insert titles too. I like the ability to arrange things in DVD chapters and menus and my finished slide shows surprise me in how professional they look.
So far, I have not had any problem with creating DVD shows that work in my disk players connected to ordinary television sets.
I can recommend both Adobe Premier Elements 7 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 7. The digital photographer just beginning to edit photos and videos will find these programs useful as will the more advanced picture makers.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 - Old Version ReviewI'm a user of Photoshop Elements all the way back to the first edition. This is, in my opinion, one of the best graphics programs out there--all the power of the great Photoshop full professional program minus the printing CMYK functions you'd need to do professional layouts. So for most users, the great features of Photoshop are there and the price is oh-so-much-more-affordable.
The Version 6 has some significant changes. The interface looks quite different, though I only had some trouble finding my favorite functions. The loading is significantly faster than the previous versions, which was one of my chief annoyances with Photoshop Elements. Version 6.0 loads very quickly, and this is a big improvement.
Changes:
Smart Albums: built-in picture organization. No need to use a separate organizer program.
Darkened Interface: The picture interface (where you load your photos) is darkened to make a better contrast on screen. At first, I did not like this, but it is easier on the eyes so I got used to it and like it now.
Selections: With this new technology, you use a brush to mark out your selection, and then use sliders to make the adjustment blend into the background. Very easy to use. Major change.
Enhanced Clone Tool: Cloning lets you take an inocuous background selection and copy it over an offending area of a picture (mailbox, person, unwanted pole.)
Enhanced Spot Healing Brush: Very easy to use brush to haze out areas, I used to use the smear brush, this is easier and less difficult. The later versions of Elements have a check/cancel button in the corner of your work area, so you can back out of the changes without altering your work.
Enhanced Black and White: Contrast function built in to convert color to pretty decent b&w.
Photo Blending: Much better function to mix photos. Now you can create unrealistic pictures of yourself by putting in your best bits with someone else's better bits, post it on Match.com and disappoint people who meet you in the flesh.
Enhanced Photo Books: available only in North America and Japan. Kind of a way to make your own catalogs.
Enhanced Sharing: Sharing Center burns cds and sends to email as well.
Enhanced Interactive Sharing: Adobe Flash Technology is employed to make animated web galleries. Very cool.
Smart Albums: You can sort by 10 criteria, such as date of shoot, etc, and make an album of only those pictures to work on.
The computers that run Photoshop Elements 6.0? Right now, it's just PC's, and it supports both XP and Vista, though I've heard reports that Vista can be problematical. I do not use Vista, so I can't report on this.
MAC version is due out in early 2008.
For PC's, here's your system requirements:
1.3GHz, or better CPU
256 MB RAM (512 recommended, really)
16-bit Color display with 1024x768 resolution at 96DPI or less.
CD-Rom
1.5 GB hard disk space minimum available
I'd add that a good video card is advisable; if your system is more than 3 years old, it may bog down if you don't have enough video memory on board and I can't speak to what is required, as this is not given as a spec. If you find the processing of pictures slow on your system, adding more video memory may be more useful than more RAM on the main board.Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 - Old Version OverviewAdobe Photoshop Elements 6 software combines power and simplicity so you can make your photos look their best, share them in imaginative ways, and easily find and view all your photos and video clips.
