Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 - Old Version ReviewI read many reviews for software. I always read the worst reviews first and take what people say with a grain of salt. In reading reviews for Photoshop Elements, I see many people giving this program lackluster reviews. Not based on the software's capability, but based on its lack of additional features over previous installments or the program's speed. I hope to address what others have said and help you make a decision on whether to buy this program based on its attributes and your needs.
Let me make it clear by saying that Elements is an excellent, if not the best photo editor in its price range. Although the price and features in this program may be more than the average person with a digital camera may need, I feel this program is an excellent choice for all types of users. Be advised, this program has a steeper learning curve than many other photo editors. In addition to that, expect to spend $30-$40 for a book to learn how to use many editing features in Elements if you are not already familiar with it.
Adobe has included it's excellent Photo Organizer in Elements 3 & 4. What's important to realize is that the organizer is a nice way to keep track of and view all your photos, but it's not what you would want to use for quickly viewing an occasional photo here and there. (When I double click an image file I want it open within a second or two.) It takes approximately 10-15 seconds for the elements organizer to load on my laptop if it's not resident in the computers memory. (Longer or shorter based on computer's hardware of course, but probably not too much shorter.) This is why many people complain about the speed of the program and the reason I don't recommend associating elements with many of your image file types. Use a viewer to view and elements to organize and edit! I don't have an issue with loading time because I only use it to organize and edit. When I open elements I am usually in there for awhile.
I have noticed some version 2 reviewers disappointed about versions 3 and 4 taking longer to load. Another major reason of some poor reviews from Elements 2 users, is the facelift given to version 3 to look more like it's big brother Photoshop. Change is usually not welcome when people are already familiar with the program's interface.
As far as whether to UPGRADE from elements 3, I recommend saving your money unless there is a certain feature in version 4 you must have. I really can't believe Adobe added so little over version 3. The magic extractor and selection brush do work very well and are convenient on tougher selections but they are not the universal answer. The additional features in 4 are nice but not worth the $60-$80 price of the program. I own Photoshop Elements 3 and 4. The worst part is, I bought version 3 about two months before version 4 came out. Am I upset about that? Yes. However, I still went ahead and purchased the new Elements/Premier bundle when it released from Amazon since I did not have Premier Elements. I read some reviews stating that version 4 was slower than version 3. I have both installed on this laptop and would say that 4 is a little faster. I can also say I have no problems with the program crashing or conflicting with anything else on my computers.
Some cons of Elements 4 are the removal of the file browser and many 3rd party tools and add-ons that worked in version 3, do not necessarily work in 4.
If you do not own this program and are looking for an excellent organizer/editor and are up to the challenge of learning many of the editing features this program offers then take the plunge. The creativity options are endless. You will be amazed at what this program can do if you know how to use it.Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 - Old Version OverviewAdobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 software combines power and simplicity to help you do it all: Edit and enhance your photos, easily find and view them, and show off your creativity in countless ways. Fix common flaws instantly or use advanced options for more control. Keep every photo at your fingertips with flexible tagging, searching, and viewing options. Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 Premiere Elements 3.0 Bundle ReviewThis is quality software.
- It has the right feature set. No superfluous stuff like backup software and DVD duplication software, as is the case with Roxio MyDVD9.
- The user interface is simple and intuitive enough that I was able to start creating a DVD from multiple video clips of our baby that I had scattered around. I didn't use the help file, I just installed it and started. I only referred to the manual for advanced functions.
- And advanced functions it certainly has. I like the ability to create multiple audio and video tracks separately and blend them together. I like using Photoshop Elements to create slide shows in my DVDs by porting them to Premiere Elements with a click - it's simple, cleaner and quicker than any other product.
- The output stage where one encodes a DVD is simple and reliable. I have a relatively slow PC, and certainly didn't want any error messages coming up several hours into an encoding job for creating an hour-long DVD.
- The integration between Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements goes more than skin deep. They share the same user interface, and one can send pictures and videos from one package to the other.
- It has never crashed, even in Windows.Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 Premiere Elements 3.0 Bundle OverviewAdobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 plus Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 software combines two powerful yet easyto- use products to deliver the most complete photo and video editing solution. Jazz up photo slide shows with cinematic effects and transitions; use freeze frames to add a dramatic pause to your video or to make professional-looking DVD covers and labels; create personalized DVDs; and easily share on the web. Now telling your stories with photos and videos is easier than ever.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 & Adobe Premiere Elements 4 ReviewThe Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 and Premiere Elements 4 bundle is one of the best values for the home photo/video editor. I use the full version of Photoshop and a fairly pricey video editing (Sony Vegas) package at our business, but needed a powerful yet inexpensive (a relative term, I know) package to use at home. Here are my observations on each package:
Photoshop Elements 6:
At first glance I was disappointed and thought I had made a big mistake as the default interface is fairly simplistic (which is a GOOD thing for most users). Being used to the some of the more advance features (such as "Curves") and the ability to load in templates, the one click tools (while great for the casual user) were a little underwhelming. Not to fear though, the more powerful tools are still available by getting into a different editing mode, which I would have found faster if I had read the somewhat skimpy manual. All in all, it is nice to be able to "one click fix" all of my family photos, and still have the ability to get more powerful tools for the work I bring home with me. This is a fantastic value for the money!
Premiere Elements 4:
Since most of my editing is done on higher dollar packages at work, I was just looking for a home software package to quickly assemble clips, make photo slide shows, and to convert clips for upload to YouTube. This package surprised me with it's drag and drop ease of use. It is fantastic for the home user and does exactly what it says it is going to do. One note about the YouTube integration, it is nothing short of fantastic! I had a clip that was just too big to upload and my expensive work software just was too hard to get the file size and quality they require. Using Premiere Elements, I was able to drop in the large clip, indicate it was for YouTube, and the software did the rest...Including logging in and uploading it to my account right from inside the program. No muss, no fuss, just as advertised!
All in all, I think this is one of the best home user packages available. Simple enough for the basic user with access to the more powerful tools if needed.Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 & Adobe Premiere Elements 4 OverviewAdobe Photoshop Elements 6 & Adobe Premiere Elements 4 software combines two powerful yet easy-to-use products to deliver the most complete photo and video-editing solution. ArcSoft PhotoStudio 6 ReviewAfter using photo studio 5.5 for a couple of years I had to update to Photo Studio 6 after Installing Windows 7. (Win 7 is a must for those using digital photo or camcorder work.) 6.0 is the worst upgrade of any software I have used. It is in cropping that it fails. I crop my 4x3 into 16x9 10x8 and several other precise images. If you don't crop your images then you'll be ok with 6.0.
Pro:
It now displays preview items larger if you're less than full scan. Big Deal!
There are improvements in rotating images and several other minor improvements.
Con:
5.5 right click had these needed commands:
cut, copy, actual view, fit in window, zoom in, and zoom out (but needed crop).
6.0 right click has these needed commands:
crop and zoom to (which is in percentage and not as useful, will not display fit in window.DUMB.
5.5 when you select image using left click, size of image is shown in position box.
6.0 position box removed which makes it harder to crop images. WHY? DUMB! For my use, this was a disaster! 5.5 is 5 stars and 6.0 is 2 stars.
If you do not have Windows 7, then you will find 5.5 is a great basic program and at $17.95 on Amazon lots of bang for the buck. Windows 7 users will pay $ 74.99. Go elsewhere.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 - Old Version ReviewI have purchased and used every version of Adobe Photoshop Elements since the product was first released - and most recently I upgraded to Photoshop Elements 5.O. I read another review posted here on Amazon in which the reviewer states that a lot of important features are missing from this newest version. Specifically, he says that Elements 5.0 omits two important features - selection brushes and sharpening filters. That is just not true. These features are in the new 5.0 version, so I'm not sure why the reviewer would have said that (unless he is not really familiar with this product).
In my opinion, this is the BEST editing software on the market for the money. I don't know of any other product that offers anywhere near power or flexibility for a similar price. I think the upgrade to Elements 5.0 is worth it - "color curves" are a great new feature, as are the new artwork and effects that were added to this version. These are a lot of fun and very useful particularly if you enjoy creating scrapbooks.
And yes, despite what the prior reviewer says - you CAN adjust the color curve in the Elements 5.0. You may not be able to adjust them to the extent that you can if you were using Photoshop CS2 - but then Photoshop CS2 costs about $500 more than Photoshop Elements 5.0. Besides, its a lot easier to learn how to use color curve in Elements.
I know that many people rely on reviews here at Amazon to help them decide whether to buy a product - I know that I do. I think it is unfortunate that an earlier reviewer made claims about this product that are just plain wrong. I encourage anyone considering Elements 5.0 to research the product and not be mislead by inaccurate information as to its content. Personally, I am very happy with it and I do recommend it.
RobertaAdobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 - Old Version OverviewAdobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 software combines power and simplicity so you can do more with your photos. Instantly fix flaws or use new advanced tools for more precise control over color and lighting. Quickly put your photos into fun, flexible layouts that you can edit, rearrange, and resize. Show off your creativity by sharing photos in new lipbooks, dynamic slide shows, and web photo galleries created using Flash technology. And with your collection organized the way that works best for you, you can find any photo orvideo clip instantly.

Top new features of Photoshop CS5 and Photoshop CS5 Extended
Intelligent selection technology Photoshop CS5 takes the time and frustration out of making precise image selections and masks, providing you a faster way to extract subjects from their backgrounds and create realistic composites. New intelligent selection technology offers better edge detection and faster, more accurate masking results of complex subjects, like hair. Automatic color decontamination helps you eliminate background color around the edges of a selection, resulting in more seamless compositions when placing extracted subjects on new backgrounds.
Experienced Photoshop users know that the best selections are created by constantly adapting the selection technique for differences in the subject's edges--one method for hair and another for the edge of a building. With Photoshop CS5, you can produce highly accurate masks and selections faster and more simply than before with a set of new adaptive selection-edge modification controls. Smart Radius automatically matches the best selection approach with the subject's changing edge characteristics, and the extra view modes assist you in previewing the quality of your selections. The Refine Radius and Erase Refinements tools customize your masks and selections as you make them. These tools, in combination with the color decontamination settings, help eliminate any residual background color from around the edges of your selections.
Content‐Aware Fill One of the most exciting new features in Photoshop CS5 is the remarkable ability to remove an image element and magically replace it with details that match the lighting, tone, and noise of the surrounding area so that it looks like the content never existed. Now, you can make substantial changes to photo composition quickly and easily, as even large complex subjects can be seamlessly erased.
You can use Content-Aware Fill with the Spot Healing Brush or as an option of the Fill feature to replace content in an active selection. Selecting the Content-Aware setting with the Spot Healing brush changes the way the tool fills in the areas you paint. This retouching approach is designed to account more fully for the structure and detail of the image elements that surround the painted area, providing a near-invisible result when removing unwanted objects. Alternatively, you can select the object to be removed, and then replace the area with synthesized details from the area surrounding the selection, simply by using the Content-Aware option in the Fill dialog box.
HDR Pro for creativity and precision with the next generation of high dynamic range imaging With just a few clicks, you can go beyond the capture capabilities of your camera by combining multiple exposures into a single high dynamic range (HDR) photo that preserves the full tonal range of a scene with high contrast. Photoshop CS5 introduces HDR Pro for more control over the HDR merging process and greater adjustment power over the mapping of tones and the styling of HDR output, resulting in images that range from photorealistic to highly surreal.
HDR Pro offers extended controls, an enhanced dialog box, and improved image processing. New algorithms enable more accurate alignment of source files and automatically deghost any problem areas that occur when trying to merge source photos where subjects have moved during capture. You can even select a source file to be used as the sole reference for any ghosted areas or allow the feature to do this automatically for you.
New tone-mapping tools and adjustment controls give you the power to implement your own HDR vision, producing photos that range in style from fully textured images of high-contrast scenes to wildly hyper-realistic creations. Save your favorite styles as presets and apply them to multiple groups of source files to provide a common look and feel to your HDR photos. And for times when you don't have multiple source files, create the look of an HDR-processed image from a single photo with the new HDR Toning feature that allows you to mimic the tone-mapping results traditionally achieved in high dynamic range photos.
Together with the existing Photomerge feature (which allows for image stitching), the exposure-merging capabilities of HDR Pro can add up to high-bit-depth, 360-degree panoramas ideal for composite photography, video, and beyond.
The Auto Stack Panorama/HDR files option in Adobe Bridge CS5 and the new panelized Mini Bridge groups source files together into stacks for quicker creation of HDR images in Photoshop CS5. You can even start the creation of an HDR file by choosing Tools > Merge To HDR from the Mini Bridge panel inside Photoshop.
State-of-the-art raw-image processing The Adobe Camera Raw 6 plug-in, which ships with Photoshop CS5, now supports more than 275 camera models as it continues to provide you with the industry-leading conversion of raw files. In addition, the utility provides advanced, nondestructive image editing and enhancement for raw files, as well as for other standard formats, including JPEG and TIFF. Now you can remove noise, achieve better quality sharpening, and creatively apply new styles of vignettes and film-like grain.
You can now shoot at higher ISO settings with confidence, because the updated controls in the Adobe Camera Raw 6 plug-in remove the noise common in such high-ISO images (as well as in photos captured with long exposures and pictures from consumer cameras) while still preserving excellent color and detail.
New controls for adding grain and additional post-crop vignetting settings join many creative options already available in this utility, such as the Adjustment Brush and the Graduated Filter. For the first time, you can add grain-like texture to photos as part of your nondestructive editing workflow. Adjust amount, size, and roughness of grain to easily give composites a more natural, seamless appearance by matching levels of grain across all source images--or simply use the feature to make a digital photo look more organic or film-like.
Updated post-crop vignetting options offer more creative control over the corner darkening and lightening process, and your favorite vignette effects can be saved as presets for quick application across multiple files.
Upgraded sharpening options produce clearer photos with fewer artifacts while providing better control over key details, especially when working with high-resolution pictures produced by multi-megapixel cameras.
Extraordinary painting effects With a new Mixer Brush, a Bristle Tips feature, and a new mechanism for blending colors, Photoshop CS5 redefines the way you paint. You can take advantage of more natural and realistic painting effects, making it easy to take your imagery and designs in new artistic directions.
The Mixer Brush lets you define multiple colors on a single tip, and then mix and blend them with the underlying hues on your canvas, achieving creative results that rival traditional painting media. When starting with a photo original, you can use a dry, empty brush to blend the existing colors while at the same time adding a painterly effect to the image. Mixer Brush settings provide extensive control over the wetness of the canvas colors, the load rate that determines amount of paint loaded on the brush, the mixing rate between brush and canvas colors, and whether the brush is refilled, cleaned, or both after each painting stroke.
In conjunction with these new mixing features, Photoshop CS5 incorporates unprecedented control over stroke characteristics of its painting tools with Bristle Tips. Bristle Qualities define key bristle properties such as shape, length, stiffness, thickness, angle, and spacing, which affect how the color is laid on the image as you paint.
The Bristle Brush Preview feature provides a visual representation of these changes, and you can save your tip configurations for future use, allowing you to build a customized collection of Bristle Tips to experiment with when using Photoshop brush tools.
Puppet Warp Puppet Warp gives you more freedom when pushing and pulling elements within an image. The feature lets you recompose an image to make it more appealing, or to fit a specific layout, by allowing the precise repositioning of any element within a Photoshop document, or selection, by simply clicking and dragging. After you reposition an object, Photoshop adjusts the rest of the image to account for the shifted pixels.
After choosing Edit > Puppet Warp, click on your image to drop pins establishing anchor points where you want image parts not to move, and handles that you can use for warping. Then drag any of the pins to reposition the picture elements. Use Puppet Warp to swing a raised arm to a person's side, warp and stretch text to create new effects, or reposition intrusive objects in a photo to create a more pleasing composition.
Automated lens correction The Lens Correction features in Photoshop CS5 create better quality captures by removing or correcting the three most common lens-based errors: geometric distortion, chromatic aberration, and vignetting. This means you can use a wider range of lenses with the confidence of producing images of the highest quality. With the aid of the Adobe Lens Profile Creator (available separately as a free download from labs.adobe.com) you can produce custom profiles characterizing the optical aberrations of your camera lenses. When installed and selected in the Lens Correction filter in Photoshop CS5, the profile automatically removes or corrects the three types of distortion.
The Lens Correction filter in Photoshop CS5 is redesigned to include manual adjustment controls under the Custom tab, and settings for locating and applying custom Lens Correction Profiles (LCP files) under a new Auto Correction tab. Installed profiles that match your camera and lens combination are used to apply precise distortion corrections to your photos. Suitable profiles can be located easily based on the EXIF data automatically recorded with the image, and if a suitable profile is not present in the Lens Correction filter, then with a single click within the dialog box, you can search online for the correct profile to meet your needs.
Individual error types can be selected in the filter's settings, as can options for handling any transparent areas that surround the corrected image.
User-inspired productivity enhancements Photoshop CS5 helps boost productivity and creativity throughout the editing workflow with dozens of enhancements inspired by Photoshop users. Some of these include:

Streamlined creative reviews through integration with Adobe CS ReviewCollaborate with colleagues and seek client comment quickly and easily with Adobe CS Review, a new CS Live online service* designed to simplify and accelerate the design review process.
With CS Review, you can avoid the hassles of large email attachments, logon problems with FTP servers, and time-consuming next-day air deliveries usually associated with client reviews by instead initiating a secure, shared review. Comments are displayed in near-real time and in context, providing convenient feedback on your images and designs. You can access the CS Review service from within Photoshop CS5.
Faster performance with cross-platform native 64-bit support Tight deadlines and large file sizes make performance a high priority for many Photoshop users. Photoshop CS5 and Photoshop CS5 Extended deliver cross-platform 64-bit support, allowing you to perform day-to-day imaging tasks up to 10 times faster. Video and photo professionals, especially, benefit from the extra performance, as gains are even greater if you regularly work with very large files, where processing can be up to ten times faster when you take advantage of higher addressable RAM amounts--limited only by what your hardware accommodates.
To help you tweak the performance of your setup, Photoshop CS5 lets you adjust history, tile, and cache controls in combination.
Greater access to key resources via flexible custom panels Photoshop CS5 offers easy ways to integrate and extend your workspace with customized panels. With the aid of the Configurator 2.0 panel utility (available separately as a download from labs.adobe.com) you can produce your own panels, bringing together your most used tools and menu selections and incorporating your favorite web feeds or video tutorials.
Stay connected to the greater Photoshop community and all facets of your digital life directly from within Photoshop CS5 by using panels you create or those produced and distributed by other users. You can access anything that lives on the web--favorite blogs, video content, even your email--with these integrated panels. You can even expand content beyond a panel's standard viewing area when you need a magnified view.
Easier interface management with Live Workspaces and Workspace Switcher Creating dedicated, task-specific workspaces that mimic your individual workflow increases productivity and efficiency by hiding the features you don't use and exposing the ones you do. New Live Workspaces auto-save any changes you make to a task-specific workspace, so that if you switch to a different workspace and then back again during an editing session, your panels remain exactly where you left them. The number of entries displayed in the collapsible Workspace Switcher can be altered, and the position of each workspace can be rearranged. This provides quicker navigation between frequently used setups.
Superior black-and-white conversion Photoshop CS5 continues to support the tradition of producing finely crafted monochrome photos with the inclusion of new ways to explore an endless variety of black-and-white looks. You can use the integrated Lab Black & White Technique action, located in the Default Actions group of the Actions panel, for an easy and interactive way to convert color images. Create gorgeous HDR black-and-whites with greater ease and speed by taking advantage of the new and updated features in HDR Pro. Take your monochrome creations in new directions with conversion presets in the Black & White panel.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 plus Adobe Premiere Elements ReviewI am a pretty decent digital photographer/videographer. I take a lot of photos, film a lot of video of my one-year-old, and pretty much know my way around a computer. I've been using Adobe products for quite some time, and when I heard they were coming out with a all-in-one video/photo suite, I was intrigued since my Pinnacle Studio product really had some problems and I was getting frustrated. So, when I saw Amazon had this product available and I could transfer all of my Adobe Photoshop Album pics right into the new Elements program, I was sold. And I am sure glad I made the purchase.
First, the Elements feature. If you have tons of digital pictures on your hard drive and spend minutes looking for individual ones to print out, e-mail, etc., then this program will suit you perfectly. All of your digital pictures can be tagged (events, family, etc.), and then be "sub-tagged" for even more personalization. It's quick, easy, and efficient. Also, photos can be e-mailed easily with automatic compression and cool e-mail "themes." In addition, the program lets you simply take a photo and color-correct it with one mouse click, add neat effects, eliminate red-eye (the best on the market), use the "healing brush" (ingenious) to omit perfections, and even splice and create all sorts of interesting photo montages, calendars, slideshows -- you name it. Elements is a digital photo enthusiast's dream. It has never been easier to get your pictures organized, fix them all up, send them to your family, and archive them on a CD/DVD or create an interesting slideshow, complete with music and animated fonts.
This brings us to Premiere, the video portion of the suite. As long as you have a digital video camera with IEEE 1394 connection ("firewire"), it's simple to get going. I transfered about 30 minutes of raw video, added music, did extensive edits and burned a DVD (4 minute video) in about two days, part-time, which came out exactly how I wanted it. Simply plug the camera into your PC, hit a button, and your entire video is put into a timeline view without any hiccups. Then, edit away. Add transitions, still videos, title screens, digital photos, music, slideshows -- the choices are practically endless. Different tracks allow two videos to be shown at once, providing neat picture-in-picture effects, floating text, animations, nifty titles, fades, etc. Integrated DVD burning with the ability to create your own professionally-designed DVD menu screen is also a major plus. Archive and store all of your videos and images in one place, whether they're from your vacation, the kids' activities -- whatever! Premiere makes it simple, and to date, I have not had one crash, hiccup, lost frame, or rendering problem. I have a dedicated hard drive (60 GB) for all of my video/audio work, and I recommend anybody interested in doing these types of processor-intensive tasks do the same. Premiere/Elements is installed right on this drive, so I have plenty of room/memory to keep the thing perfectly oiled and moving.
Adobe makes great products, and the Photoshop Elements/Premiere suite is no exception. Highly recommended.Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 plus Adobe Premiere Elements OverviewAdobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements Image Video Edit Software Suite - Digital still and motion photography seems to be converging. Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 ReviewWhen Adobe skipped version the Mac with version 7 of Elements, I wondered if there would be another upgrade. I'm glad that 8 came out, and at the same time as the Windows version. I often wait a version or two between upgrading but there's enough here to make the new purchase worth it to me.
I'm a fan of this program. It is all that most photographers need. Actually it does much more than most people who own it ever get to. If you are not a graphic designer, Elements is great. I've said this in prior reviews of Elements but it's a much better value than the CS version of Photoshop and up to some heavy duty image editing. You won't be able to edit photos more effectively with the full version of Photoshop. I've challenged pros to do editing with Photoshop CS that I can't do with Elements and so far haven't had to eat crow. That's not saying that Elements has *all* the tools that CS does. But Photoshop has always offered multiple ways to get things done and Elements has enough tools to do the job. The photo tools are there, though.
With this version there are some compelling new features. The first I'll mention is not really emphasized in the Adobe marketing info, but is a wonderful set of tools for photo editing. That's Adobe Camera Raw 5.5 (ACR). ACR isn't actually part of Elements but included with the program. It basically gives the same editing tools available in Adobe's Lightroom. I often use ACR to edit photos and get the majority of my work done there. This is a quality addition that most people don't know about. The upgrade in ACR from version 4 which comes with Elements 6 to version 5 adds some really useful photo editing tools.
Another add on to Elements is Adobe Bridge, which a lot of pros use to sort and catalog their images and video. It's also a quality program in its own right and the center of my photo workflow. It can be well integrated with Elements and is probably worth the cost of the whole bundle on its own. It also plays nice with iPhoto if you want to keep your pictures stored there.
Now to Photoshop Elements 8. Besides the upgrade to ACR, the updates that our Windows brethren got in version 7 have been included, as well as some excellent tools for making composite photos from multiple images. They're slick and very easy to use. There are some one step editing tools that are new to the Mac version and a totally cool way to squeeze a photo into a smaller space without squashing the import parts of the picture. The photomerge can save the day with group shots. Simply take several pictures. The use Elements to switch the picture of your brother in law with his eyes closed for one where he looks awake. It's seamless and easy.
Elements makes sharing your images easier, too with streamlined web albums and slideshow capibility. There's even a send to iPhone function.
Any down sides? Well, Adobe's installer seems to take forever and it helps to have a fairly new computer with a decent amount of RAM. Elements wants some power to perform quickly. And the program is complicated. Though it is much easier to learn than Photoshop CS4. The upside is that since it's so popular there are a lot of good books, web tutorials and classes to help.
This is a solid upgrade to an already excellent program. I recommend it strongly. It's has all the editing power that most photographers need, without the price tag of the full Photoshop. I'd even go so far as to say that if you even question if it's good enough it is. Photoshop CS4 is a professional program with extra professional features, few of which are actually photo realted.Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 OverviewThe newest version of the #1 selling consumer photo-editing software, Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 combines power and simplicity so you can easily go beyond the basics to tell great stories with your photos. Adobe Photoshop CS5 ReviewMy main interest is photography and after using Photoshop Elements for many years I decided to see what Photoshop CS5 would offer. This software package comes with Bridge which is a Browser that will help you keep track of photos by adding key words, and ratings, etc. It will let you open photos then send them to Photoshop. If you shoot RAW photos Adobe Camera Raw is also included. My first impression of these three elements is very positive. I was especially impressed with Adobe Camera Raw. This very capable program will allow you to do most of the adjustments that a photographer will need to do for non-destructive adjustment of exposure, color, sharpness, spot removal, cropping and more. Bridge is great for organizing photos for projects using other Adobe software along with Photoshop. For organizing hundreds or thousands of photos I think Photoshop Elements Organizer is a little better than Bridge. I think the Elements Organizer is a data base where as Bridge is a browser so PSE Organizer will keep track of and show thumbnails photos on external drives or DVDs even when they are off line. As for Photoshop itself it is an awesome piece of software with an amazing capability. You can find plenty of reviews on-line. There is quite a learning curve for this package so I think you need to get a good book on the subject since there is none included. There are quite a lot of on-line video tutors available however. I suggest you check out the Russell Brown Photoshop Tutor on-line. He has several excellent videos free to view also check out Adobe TV, this may be a good way to review the program before purchase.
One big problem I had is this: I wanted to use my existing Photoshop Elements 8 Organizer, to keep track of photos, with Photoshop but these two programs don't play together well. When a Raw file is passed on to Adobe Camera Raw version 6.3 things work ok but when done with ACR the photo will not be passed back to the Organizer whether or not the photo is opened in Photoshop CS5. Using a JPEG photo sent directly to Photoshop seems to work ok however so it looks like the problem may be with ACR. I didn't see a way to open a JPEG into ACR from the Organizer, you can with Bridge. I sent a notice about this to Adobe support and got a reply that since my PS Elements 8 is not supported I would have to purchase support even though the problem could be in Photoshop or ACR which are supported. A web search revealed that this is apparently a bug going back several versions. One blogger was told to buy Lightroom. So don't plan on using Photoshop with Elements Organizer for raw files and don't count on Adobe support for help. You could pay for the support but may still find this fruitless. Of course you may not encounter this problem (I'm using Win 7 Home premium 64 bit). Photoshop Elements will do both Asset Management plus photo editing. To do the same with Photoshop you will need to use Bridge or a better solution for Photographers is to use Lightroom, an asset management program. The Lightroom + Photoshop option costs 10 times more than Elements alone however.
Bottom line: If you are starting out in photo editing I suggest Photoshop Elements and see if that will meet your needs. If not then move on to Lightroom which has the same capabilities as Adobe Camera Raw plus asset management however you will still need an editor. You can use the Elements Editor with Lightroom and if you what even more capabilities then get Photoshop for your editor. Photoshop, Bridge, Adobe Camera Raw has a learning curve of many hours, which could be fun. Elements also will take a lot of time but a lot of the knowledge you learn for Elements is also useful with Photoshop but plan on getting a book for either. You can learn this software on-line but I found that I would tend to bounce around from topic to topic where as a book leads you through a more logical flow. For PS Elements I used Philip Andrews Advanced Photoshop Elements 7 for Digital Photographers also available from Amazon and found it excellent. If you are a Pro or want to do graphic design then Photoshop is the only way to go. I wish Adobe would offer a photographers version of Photoshop that included Lightroom rather than or in addition to Bridge.Adobe Photoshop CS5 OverviewExpand your creative possibilities and turn your vision into reality with the comprehensive, state-of-the-art image editing tools in Photoshop CS5. Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 -Old Version ReviewPhotoshop Elements 8 consists of two different programs, the Editor and the Organizer, and the online photo-sharing service Photoshop.com, all only loosely tied together. I give the Editor 5 stars and the Organizer and Photoshop.com 1 star.
Adobe provides a 30-day free trial for PSE 8 - be sure to try first before you buy!
5 STARS FOR THE EDITOR
The Editor is a reduced version of the full Photoshop CS, but with most of the features that a serious hobbyist (and even many professionals) would ever want for editing photos. Since it's based on full Photoshop, the PSE Editor is robust and stable, with very few serious bugs. Considering that Photoshop CS costs about eight times as much, the Editor is an excellent value. Adobe's Web site gives a good, accurate overview of the Editor.
1 STAR FOR THE ORGANIZER AND PHOTOSHOP.COM
The Organizer is the program that lets you annotate and group your photos and quickly search them, and the online service Photoshop.com lets you share those photos with others on the Web. Despite Adobe's slick marketing, both the Organizer and Photoshop.com are slow, buggy, hard to use, and very poorly supported by Adobe. Adobe prefers to add a few glitzy superficial features each year, rather than make the core organizational capabilities fast and robust.
Think twice about whether you want to lock your collection of photos and videos into PSE's proprietary catalog. Starting with PSE 6, Adobe shipped development of the Organizer offshore, and there are well-founded rumors that Adobe is moving away from consumer products and focusing on their core competency, tools for professionals. So it's very possible that this is the last release of the PSE Organizer and that Photoshop.com will be shutdown.
Unless you've got a large catalog built with previous versions of PSE (like I do), there are better alternatives for organizing and sharing your photos. For casual use, there are the free programs: Windows Live Photo Gallery, iPhoto, Picasa, and online services such as Flickr. These are easier to use, faster, more stable, and can handle thousands of photos. For professionals and advanced hobbyists who want to manage collections of tens of thousands of photos, better alternatives include Lightroom, Aperture, ACDSee Pro, and Microsoft Expression Media. These cost about twice as much as PSE, but they're more reliable, faster, and much better supported.
Though PSE is intended for the serious hobbyist, Adobe has repeatedly introduced features that don't work well with more than a couple thousand photos, and Adobe leaves serious bugs unfixed for many years. The new features in PSE 8 have embarrassingly obvious, show-stopper bugs.
Some of the major problems with the Organizer include:
-Viewing photos in Full Screen mode is intolerably slow - 13 seconds to bring up a photo in a large catalog.
-The Folder view is not only extremely slow, but often shows the wrong contents of folders.
-The handling of multiple hard drives and network drives, essential for users with large catalogs, was seriously broken in PSE 6 and only partially fixed two years later in PSE 8.
-Upgrading catalogs from previous versions of PSE often fails with mysterious, unhelpful error messages.
-People who have archived their photos to CD/DVDs in previous versions have discovered that they can no longer access them from their catalog in later versions due to bugs in the upgrade process, and Adobe support has been unable to help them.
-The handling of metadata -- tags, dates/times, captions, notes, and star ratings that get written into the photos - is riddled with long-standing bugs. PSE can't even write the so-called sidecar files (.xmp) for Nikon raw files (.nef).
-The features for more advanced searching are inconsistent, confusing, and buggy.
-Map View, which lets you place photos on a map ("GPS locations"), is a bug-ridden toy that can't handle more than a thousand photos. It's based on Yahoo maps, unlike most tools which use the superior Google maps.
As an indicator of the quality problem with PSE 8, the few new features in the Organizer have blatant bugs:
-The keyword-tag text box, which allows you to enter tags by typing and very useful if you have dozens or hundreds of tags, crashes the program after a couple dozen uses.
-With larger catalogs, the face-tagging command locks up the program for 30 seconds after each use.
-The Auto-Analyzer writes a GPS location of 0,0 into photos' metadata, and it isn't possible to change the map location after that.
-The Auto-Analyzer takes over 4 minutes to analyze an 8 MB, 15-second video clip, hogging your CPU. Tracing tools show that the analyzer is re-reading files over 300 times, an indicator of poor engineering.
Adobe markets syncing with Photoshop.com both as reliable backup and for sharing your photos, but it does a poor job at both:
-The sync is slow, often uploading typical albums at 20% or less of your maximum upload bandwidth.
-The sync is buggy, sometimes mangling dates and photo rotation, and ignoring changes you've made to the order of photos within albums.
-The "backup" doesn't save crucial information from your Organizer catalog such as your tag hierarchy, projects (e.g. slide shows), audio captions, stacks, version sets, and folder structure, and it will mangle your dates.
-Photoshop.com is buggy and sluggish and lacks the rich features of other services like Flickr or SmugMug.
Adobe's customer support for PSE and Photoshop.com is like the products - very slow and buggy:
-You can wait on the phone for hours.
-The customer-service reps have only a rudimentary understanding of the product and often give out wrong information. They frequently tell people to reinstall Windows, and some users have lost their catalogs as a result of bad advice.
-The knowledge base of technical articles is rarely updated and doesn't include most of the well-known information and workarounds that are shared on the user-to-user forums. Searching the knowledge base is slow and inaccurate.
-Adobe consistently refuses to help customers with Vista 64, even though none of the product literature's requirements excludes Vista 64 and Adobe distributes PSE 7 pre-installed on Dell and HP Vista 64 systems. It's not clear yet whether Adobe will support PSE 8 on 64-bit Windows 7.
-Support for Photoshop.com is only available, sporadically, from employees who post on the user-to-user forum.
-Adobe support for all of its products is so bad that a VP posted an open letter to customers in August 2009, apologizing and blaming the problems on a poorly managed transition to an outsourced support provider. Two months later, there isn't much sign of improvement.
Adobe almost never issues a bug-fix update - you have to wait for the next version to come out (once a year) and pay full price for an upgrade (there are no real discounts for upgrading). The only exception is the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in, which has a new version once every few months.
My background: I've used all versions of the Organizer in Photoshop Elements (and Album) for my personal photos (currently about 17,000). I'm a major contributor on the PSE user-to-user forums, maintain a heavily used FAQ for PSE, and make freely available a utility for troubleshooting various catalog issues caused by PSE bugs.
KNOWN OUTSTANDING BUGS IN PSE 8
Below is a list of the known, reproducible bugs in PSE 8 that I've encountered and reported to Adobe. This list started with PSE 6, but I only include bugs still outstanding in PSE 8.
New Problems in PSE 8
* PSE 8 crashes or gets intolerably slow after using the new Keyword Tags text box a small number of times.
* If you use the new Keyword Tags text box to apply an existing tag name with a comma in it, PSE will silently create two new tags instead.
* After applying a tag, the Keyword Tags text box loses keyboard focus and you need to mouse-click in the box again to enter another tag.
* The Find > Find People For Tagging command locks up the Organizer for about 30 seconds after you click Done (even if you haven't made any changes), when using larger catalogs.
* In the Find > Find People For Tagging command, when you select Add Missing Person, you usually can't resize the selection box by grabbing the lower-right or lower-center handles, which are the handles that most right-handed people are likely to use.
* The Find > Find People For Tagging command doesn't do auto-complete on pre-existing People tags, making it very hard to use with existing catalogs.
* Full Screen view (F11) is much slower than in PSE 7 on larger catalogs, making it nearly unusable.
* PSE doesn't remember the settings if you toggle the Full-Screen Quick Edit Panel and Quick Organize Panel to disappear completely.
* The keyword tagging in the Quick Organize Panel doesn't auto-complete tags as you type, making it useless with more than a dozen or so tags.
* The Auto-Analyzer will set the EXIF GPS location to 0 degrees for files not currently having locations.
File Management and Tagging - Major Problems
* Folder Location view shows incorrect folder contents when more than one keyword tag is selected in the Keyword Tags pane.
* The Organizer fails very ungracefully when two drives have the same volume serial number, e.g. because of the use of a disk-cloning utility.
* The conversion of a catalog from PSE 6 to PSE 8 doesn't properly handle photos that are stored within the PSE 6 catalog folder (as occurs when PSE 6 was used to restore a...Read more›Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 -Old Version OverviewThe newest version of the #1 selling consumer photo-editing software, Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 combines power and simplicity so you can easily tell amazing stories with your photos. Adobe Photoshop & Premiere Elements 8 ReviewI installed this Adobe bundle on a brand new HP PC with a Intel 2 Quad processor and Windows 7, and, while I love Photoshop and some of the upgraded features, Premiere crashed twice the first time I used it and took forever to process. (More on preventing crashes later.) Photoshop is a must-have program. Premiere is a basic, no-frills program with some major issues, designed for composing movies out of digital video clips and still photos.
First, Photoshop: Photoshop Elements remains one of the most powerful image processors for the non-professional user. From special effects to simply improving the look of standard photos, the software can manipulate photos in almost any way you can imagine. Out of the newest features, the most interesting are recomposition tools, size presets, and facial recognition. In the first, the user can unlock the background from the foreground and bring foreground images closer or farther from one another, and can even remove unsightly objects from the photo altogether. With protect and remove brushes, you can even erase your ex from that family photo and bring everyone closer together to fill the empty space. Facial recognition, while quirky at times, works so you can quickly extract all the photos of an individual from your library -- say, you want to delete every photo that contains your ex or print them out for dartboards, and so you call them up to see them all at once. The quirky part comes when the software recognizes that a bird or a gorilla is not a person, but then asks "Who's this?" while pointing to a flower stalk or a print on someone's dress. The facial recognition feature works best if you take the time to fill out names on many photos. Eventually, it recognizes certain people, with or without sunglasses, in profile or full face. The size presets are the most practical improvement, as you can size your photos to standard sizes -- say, 4x 6 or 8x 10 -- simply by pulling down a window and selecting.
Now, Premiere: If you are just starting out or don't want to produce movies with a lot of editing and features, Premiere is an okay program, especially if you are buying Photoshop anyway. Those of us who have used Macs and its iMovie program will find this program comparable to what Apple was producing three years ago -- and that should tell PC users how behind Premiere is. The interface is somewhat clunky, and it lacks intuitive editing controls. You can drag and drop clips from your organized media center, add titles, adjust transitions, and use themed templates. The biggest problem comes with frequent crashes when the program simply fails to respond during an operation. Originally, I didn't install the content disk because I wasn't interested in all those templates; however, as soon as I did, the crashes became less frequent. If you plan on doing minimal video work at a leisurely pace, this program should be good enough for your needs. Otherwise . . . well, you might want to use Photoshop's remove brush to cut it out of your picture.
For any digital photographer and PC user, Photoshop is a must-have program. Premiere is another matter; it will frustrate anyone expecting a program as powerful as Photoshop. Take serious stock of your needs before you buy these two programs as a bundle.
NOTE: Because I used this with Windows 7, I cannot say how it works with earlier versions of Windows.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 ReviewI like Photoshop Elements. I've always considered it a good option for photographers who haven't spent the many, many hours needed to learn the full version of Photoshop. That's not to mention the extra $560 the full version will set you back.
I've taught Photoshop at a local college since 2000 and use it in my graphic design business. There are real advantages to having the pro version, for pros. However, there are some real disadvantages, too. I see person after person come into my classes having paid the full price for the full version. With very, very few exceptions these people don't push their program hard enough to exceed Element's limitations and probably never will. There seems to be the mind set that because these people have spend a bundle on their cameras and lenses they "need" the "better" version of Photoshop. They don't. Elements can handle a huge percentage of photo editing and design jobs. You may have to use a different tool than what you're used to but can usually achieve identical results. A better camera can produce better photos. Photoshop CS- whatever isn't a better photo editing program. The underlying graphics engine is identical in both programs. Elements just has a simpler interface. If you think that Photosho Elements is complicated, try learning CS4.
To prove my point to a professional photographer friend I had him come up with a dozen photos. He edited them in CS3 and I used Elements 7. Our results were different on a couple of the images but that wasn't due to Elements but that my interpretation was different from his. Even he agreed.
That said my recommendation is that if you are getting serious about editing your photos, start with Elements. It will save you a ton of scratch and the vast majority of what you learn will be easily transferable to the full program. If you find that you outgrow Elements some day you haven't lost anything. Chances are that Photoshop will have a new version out and even the upgrade for Photoshop is half again as expensive as Elements at full retail.
As to the value of this version of Elements. Some people have written that they find it slower than previous ones. Maybe they had an earlier version of Elements. I haven't found that to be the case on my pretty middle of the road computer. Are the new tools worth the cost? That's a tougher question. If you have version 4 or earlier, absolutely. Version 5, I'd say yes. Version 6? Probably. I usually skip a version when upgrading.
There are some new tools that are nice. The Adobe Photoshop.com isn't too compelling. I've been on Flickr for years and don't plan to move off. Adobe's site doesn't offer an real advantages for me.
The Scene Cleaner and Smart Brush are both very useful tools. The Action Player lets me run pre-recorded Photoshop actions in Elements. That's not quite like making my own, but there are hundreds, possibly thousands of pre-recorded Photoshop actions available for download. Actions can perform automated changes to your images and can be quite useful
Other tools, like the Blue Sky brush have limited functionality. Painting a blue sky over water is easy and cool. Doing so over trees or any complicated horizon is a total pain. The Whiter Teeth brush is handy, though that wasn't that hard to accomplish before. But keeping with Elements' philosophy of simplifying photo editing, I can see that it is an obvious inclusion. And the Surface Blur tool, well don't get too excited about it.
Adobe's Photo Organizer is still an excellent tool, though I would have liked to see Adobe include Bridge instead, as they did in the Mac version of Elements.
Adobe includes some guided activities like creating holiday cards and scrapbooks with Elements. If that appeals to you, there are wizards that guide you through the activities. The results aren't quite professional looking but probably better than most people could achieve on their own.Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 OverviewAdobe Photoshop Elements 7 software combines power and simplicity so you can make ordinary photos extraordinary; tell engaging stories in beautiful, personalized creations for print and web; and easily find and view all your photos. New Photoshop.com membership* works with Photoshop Elements so you can protect your photos with automatic online backup and 2 GB of storage; view your photos anywhere you are; and share your photos in fun, interactive ways with invitation-only Online Albums.
