Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 Upgrade ReviewI have been a faithful Adobe products user for more than a decade now, and yet I find it is still difficult to rate this product as high as I would like to. Adobe seems, in my opinion, to knowingly toss out imperfect software, then struggle to provide updates to fix issues that should have been handled prior to release. Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 is not a bad product, it just could have been better.
The problems are somewhat minor, but frustrating none the less. The biggest issue for me is the random crashing. I find myself hurrying to complete a segment or sequence so I can save it and move on. Yes, there is an auto save feature, but it also has its own set of issues so I don't use it. The crash isn't a freeze or "blue screen of death"...the program simply closes without any notice and you lose all the work since your last save. My system is an AMD 64X2 Dual Core processor, 8 gigs of ram and a 1.5 TB main program drive. All of my data from my projects are on additional drives, separate from the main drive as recommended. I am running WinXP Pro SP3. So, although my system exceeds the minimum requirements set by Adobe, I still experience issues that may be related to either the OS or system design and it is maddening.
One issue that may indeed be the main culprit is that Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 was the first of the series to be optimized for use in a 64 bit environment, yet designed to run in a 32 bit system as well, or so they say. A jack of all trades is a master of none as Adobe may have realized when it released the new CS5 version. System requirements for the newest release indicate a dual core 64 bit processor and OS only.
I am so familiar with the Adobe work flow and interface that I am unlikely to switch now but rather continue on...like working to make a bad marriage better. But these issues should have been handled prior to release.Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 Upgrade OverviewTell your story with maximum impact using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 software, the start-to-finish solution for video production that includes Adobe OnLocation CS4 and Encore CS4 software. Finally, pass the metadata through export for publishing to the web, enabling searchable video and helping to unlock new revenue streams.
Editing efficiency Take advantage of more than 50 of the most requested editing enhancements to make your workflow more efficient. Apply effects to multiple selections, get timecode information faster, speed work in the timeline with new keyboard shortcuts, and more.
Speech Search Turn spoken dialogue into text-based, timecode-accurate, searchable metadata. Jump to a specific area of a shot by searching for keywords within the dialogue, and then use keywords to quickly locate and display what you're looking forÑor even cut video based on the script.
Faster, customizable SWF output Create SWF file versions of your DVD and Blu-ray projects for the web, complete with DVD interactivity, menus, URL links, and customizable HTML templates, without opening another application. Export for streaming or progressive download, and reduce encode time by using optimized encode settings in Adobe Media Encoder.

Top new features of Adobe Premiere Pro CS 4 Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 features enhancements, such as support for the latest tapeless cameras, advanced metadata management, batch encoding, and tighter-than-ever integration, that save you time. In addition, industry-leading Blu-ray Disc authoring and the ability to output to any screen help you reach the widest audience. Listed here are the most significant new features found in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.
Next-generation tapeless camera supportCapturing video directly to disk opens the door to exciting new workflows that save time and maintain the highest quality throughout the entire production process. Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 is designed to exploit the full power inherent in tapeless workflows. Direct-to-disk recording eliminates the time-consuming capture-from-tape, media-ingest phase of post-production.
Adobe Premiere Pro offers comprehensive video-format support, from DV to HD and beyond. Full support for a variety of tapeless cameras and media lets you work with them natively to achieve the fastest workflow from capture to edit, retaining the pristine quality of your source material by eliminating time-consuming transcoding or rewrapping.
You can import and natively edit content from Panasonic P2 cameras in DVCPRO, DVCPROHD, and AVC-Intra formats, and across multiple P2 cards. Similarly, you can import and edit content from Sony XDCAM EX and XDCAM HD cameras directly, without rewrapping or transcoding. Access the footage you want before you import it by viewing camera metadata and organizing files in the Media Browser. You can also edit directly from the P2 card via the camera or a card reader, the SxS card by way of the camera or a card reader (XDCAM EX only), or use the Media Browser to transfer content to hard disk for better performance.
Batch encodingWith the explosion of video on the Internet, there's been a massive shift in how people consume video entertainment. Whether you post dailies on a password-protected website for review and approval, produce episodic shows for viewing online or on iPods, or distribute films by way of an enterprise-level video-on-demand service, being able to efficiently deliver your content in a variety of formats is crucial. Adobe Media Encoder, a separate software application included with Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, saves you time by automating the process of creating multiple encoded versions of your source files and Adobe Premiere Pro sequences. Set up multiple items for encoding, manage priorities, and control advanced settings for each item individually. Adobe Media Encoder also encodes compositions from Adobe After Effects software when it's installed as a component of Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium. Use any combination of sequences and clips as sources, and encode to a wide variety of video formats, including FLV and F4V, Windows Media, MPEG-2, H.264, QuickTime, and more.
Optimized encoding for mobile devicesKeeping track of video-enabled cell phone and mobile device capabilities is no small task. Device Central puts the latest mobile device profiles at your fingertips through a dynamically updated online device library. Device Central lets you test and preview what your work will look like on an extensive selection of devices under a variety of simulated real-life conditions. This lets you can make intelligent design decisions without having to go through a time-consuming trial and error process, and deliver engaging experiences to billions of mobile subscribers.
Improved Adobe integrationSharing media between pre- and post-production software tools used to require you to render your work in one application before importing it into another, which was an inefficient and time-consuming process. If you needed to make changes, you had to make them in the original application and re-render the asset. Innovative Adobe Dynamic Link, previously available only in Adobe Creative Suite Production Premium, streamlines this process. Dynamic Link eliminates the need for intermediate rendering by creating a direct link between new or existing assets in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 and Encore CS4. Changes made in Adobe Premiere Pro such as color corrections and so on are immediately reflected in Encore.
With new Adobe Premiere Pro integration in Adobe OnLocation, you can send entire shotlists directly to Adobe Premiere Pro along with all the metadata-based project intelligencethat was logged during the shoot.
Other integration enhancements in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 include:
Flexible Photoshop layer options. Control exactly how Photoshop files look when imported into Adobe Premiere Pro. Preview all layers, choose which layers to import, and then choose how to import them--as individual layers, merged, or as a sequence.
Support for Photoshop files with video. Avoid the extra rendering step from Adobe Photoshop when importing PSD files that contain video. Simply import the files and use them just like any other video clip in the Timeline.
Support for Photoshop blending modes. Match your favorite looks from Photoshop by applying Photoshop blending modes to clips on the Adobe Premiere Pro Timeline. Blending modes are available for all clips, and are fully keyframeable. When importing Photoshop PSD files, blending modes are automatically carried over into Adobe Premiere Pro.
Dynamic Link to Encore. Save time by sending sequences directly from Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 to Adobe Encore CS4, where they open immediately without rendering. From within Encore, open Adobe Premiere Pro sequences, and then use the Edit Original command to make a quick change to the sequence. Any changes you make in Adobe Premiere Pro are automatically reflected in Encore. Encore also reads chapter markers from the sequence, making it easy to set DVD chapter markers in the Adobe Premiere Pro Timeline.
Copy and paste text between Adobe applications. Achieve the same look for text in multiple deliverable formats. Exchange text by copying and pasting it between other Adobe Creative Suite 4 software and the Adobe Premiere Pro titler. The text retains all supported formatting, including font, spacing, and styles.

For the utmost Adobe Creative Suite integration--including expanded Dynamic Link functionality--turn to Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium, which combines After Effects CS4, Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended, Adobe Illustrator CS4, and Adobe Flash CS4 Professional software.
Enhanced editing efficiencyWork faster with powerful and flexible editing enhancements. Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 includes over 50 of the most requested editing enhancements that streamline your workflow. Display search results quickly. Apply effects to multiple selections, get timecode information faster, speed up work in the Timeline with new keyboard shortcuts, and much more.
Powerful management of projects, sequences, and clipsFind content quickly and efficiently by typing what you're looking for into the Search box in the Effects, Project, or Metadata panel, and see results update instantly as you type. Manage projects more efficiently by saving file-location preferences on a per-project basis, making it easier to set up partitions for particular projects. Update assets in your project quickly as newer versions become available by replacing files in the Project panel; when replacing assets, all clip instances of that media update automatically. Combine content from multiple projects easily with the ability to import sequences from other projects. Choose any combination of sequences to import; Adobe Premiere Pro includes all nested sequences, helping to ensure that all content is imported successfully.
Pick up projects where you left them, without having to adjust the user interface--the workspace configuration is saved with each project, making it easy to work efficiently. You can now select any combination of sequences for trimming, to avoid trimming redundant content in the Project Manager. Only the portions of the offline clips used in a sequence are included in the trimmed project, so when you subsequently recapture the offline clips, only the portions used are recaptured. Mix content even more freely in your project with different editing and rendering settings for each sequence in your project; manage your assets easily by collecting all sequences into a single project; and output multiple versions from HD masters quickly using nested sequences with different settings.
Create workspace configurations using Project-panel column configurations optimized for the task at hand. For example, set up different columns for logging and for editing.
Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 lets you delete individual preview files, making it easy to reclaim disk space. Keep the preview files you need, and discard the ones you don't.
Superior editing controlUse Track Sync Lock controls to select which tracks remain in sync after ripple and insert edits. Display source content of clips, route channels to specific destination tracks in the Timeline, and toggle video or audio channels on or off as needed with source-content controls. Place clips exactly where you want them when dragging to the Timeline. Innovative ways to target audio and video tracks provide multiple methods to control clip placement, saving you time and preserving the placement of other clips in the Timeline. Drag and drop video- or audio-only portions of clips onto any combination of compatible destination tracks.
Timesaving editing enhancementsWhen you paste multiple clips into the Timeline, the playhead jumps to the end of the pasted clip so that subsequent clips are placed directly after, saving you time. Create new subclips quickly and easily by simply dragging content directly from the Timeline to the Project panel. Place keyframes precisely within the Effect Controls panel. As you move them, keyframes snap to sequence markers, the playhead, clip edges, or other video or audio keyframes. This makes it simple to align new keyframes with existing ones. Use vertical snapping to keep clips in sync when moving them between tracks. Easily apply the same transition to multiple items in your project by copying and pasting the transition. Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 applies all transition information, while maintaining destination attributes such as transition duration.
Use smart zoom features in the Timeline to switch quickly between detailed and global views of your content. Simply press a key to zoom the Timeline to show the entire contents of your sequence, and then press another to return to the previous zoom level.
Quickly clear all effects from one or multiple selected clips using a single command.
More options with multiple selectionsCreate commonly used combinations of effects and save them in a single preset for easy reuse. The ability to apply effects to multiple clips in a single action helps you work more efficiently. Make speed/duration adjustments to multiple clips simultaneously, saving significant time when working with large numbers of clips. You can work more productively when using transitions by applying the default transition to multiple selected clips with a single command. Apply audio-gain settings to multiple selected clips in a single action, without having to repeat for each item.
Precise audio controlFinding specific sonic events in your audio tracks--for example, the start of a sentence, a car door slamming, or the downbeat in your soundtrack--is often a simple matter of looking for peaks and valleys in their waveforms. New features in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 let you view audio waveforms in more detail in the Source Monitor. Zoom both channels independently or together. Navigate with precision within the Source Monitor when working with audio-only clips. Use the playhead to scrub the waveform directly. Change batch capture behavior easily by setting and adjusting audio-channel mapping for offline clips at any time, when or after they are created. You can also recapture offline clips as audio-only or video-only by changing recapture settings for offline clips, without having to recapture them first.
Robust timecode displayPrecise editing and communication with clients are facilitated by timecode. Whether you're working with news footage gathered in the field, telecined film footage, or clips shot on a camcorder that supports timecode only by way of an accessory pack, Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 offers you a variety of ways to display timecode. The source-media timecode display format acts as the default in both the Project panel and Source Monitor. If there is no timecode or frame rate associated with the media--say if it's a still graphic or was shot on a camera that doesn't record timecode--Adobe Premiere Pro will use the format specified in the Project Settings dialog box. You can display SMPTE-style timecode or frame-count timecode that you can set to start at frame 0 or 1.
Place items in the Timeline with timecode accuracy by dragging and dropping them. See up-to-date timecode information in the Info panel as you drag clips. Choose the appropriate timecode display mode separately for each sequence in your project. Use any supported timecode format as the timecode display mode in the Timeline, Info panel, and Timecode controls. View source-media information for clips in the Timeline using the Info panel.
Enhanced keyboard-driven workflowPoint-and-click, mouse-based operation is a simple and easy way to learn new software. But experienced users want to navigate and control their tools as quickly and efficiently as possible. Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 offers complete, mouseless operation via customizable keyboard shortcuts, to help you focus on being creative. Use keyboard shortcuts to browse through clips loaded in the Source Monitor tab and to save time when moving to the start and end of clips in the Effect Controls panel. Jump to the start and end of clips in the Timeline using dedicated shortcuts that make clip navigation easy. You can assign shortcuts to mark clips more quickly and to cycle forward and backward through all the panels in the Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 user interface.
Direct-to-disk recording with cross-platform, redesigned Adobe OnLocation CS4Adobe OnLocation CS4 gives you an impressive array of production tools to help you shoot better and faster while saving time and money. You can produce superior-quality results from your video camera. Quickly calibrate the camera, monitor your footage, and check video levels by using your workstation or laptop as a virtual (and lightweight) video reference monitor. See what you can't see on a camera's small LCD viewfinder or flip-out screen, and use the comprehensive software waveform monitor and vectorscope as well as the audio spectrum analyzer to identify and correct image and audio problems before committing to videotape and hard disk.
Shooting and capturing video directly to disk lets you record a two-hour event as a single clip, or shoot as many takes of a scene as your actors need to get it right--no changing tapes, no solid-state memory time limits, no missed action. It's a director's dream come true, but in the edit suite, finding that one perfect take among dozens can be problematic. Metadatabased project intelligence and the new Shot List panel let you take control of this situation.
Each time you re-record a scene to disk, a new take is automatically created that inherits the project intelligence from the master shot. You can search by keywords in the intelligence, or create a metadata-based text transcription of dialogue and use the text display in the Metadata panel to click on words and jump to the spot in the clip you're interested in. Additionally, you can flag your selects as you capture them, making it a snap to find them in post-production.
Adobe OnLocation CS4 is available on Windows and Intel-based Mac systems. (Previously, Adobe OnLocation was only for Windows, and thus required Boot Camp to run on a Mac.) Cross-platform operation allows both Mac and Windows users to take full advantage of the power of Adobe OnLocation on laptops or workstations. The completely redesigned interface puts control of all functions on a single screen and features the familiar look and feel of other Adobe creative applications. Shot lists and metadata-based project intelligence save time and take the tedium out of logging on-set and in post-production.
Project intelligence with new XMP metadata supportMetadata is the unsung hero of an efficient workflow, and the key to the perennial challenge of making video searchable. You have great footage, but do you know where it was shot, who the talent is, and if you have the rights to use it? And more important, can you--and your viewers--find the video content that's most relevant? Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, Adobe OnLocation CS4, and Encore CS4 deliver innovative, industry-leading solutions that solve both problems.
Careful planning keeps your productions on schedule and on budget. During preproduction, block your scenes, plan camera moves, and create a shot list to plot your shooting sequence and fill in metadata associated with each shot. Bring your careful planning on-set by creating a shot list in Adobe OnLocation. While you're recording footage directly to disk, Adobe OnLocation automatically captures important metadata-based project intelligence associated with each shot coming from the camera. Create new takes each time you re-record, with each take inheriting metadata from the master shot. You can even edit or add to the metadata while you're at the shoot.
During post-production, you can use metadata to streamline project tracking, asset auditing, and many other formerly tedious manual tasks in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 and Encore CS4, as well as in Adobe Soundbooth CS4, After Effects CS4, and Adobe Flash CS4 Professional software. Best of all, as other workgroup members modify files and assets, metadata-based project intelligence associated with each media asset can be edited and updated in real time during the normal course of production.
Save even more time by eliminating the need to hunt from folder to folder to track down assets. Metadata makes your assets searchable within the Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 Timeline, so you can locate assets and clips by filename, date, time, camera setting such as resolution or frame rate, shot location, or any other search term you've added to your asset or clip.
Speech Search makes dialogue in your video assets searchableWhether you start your production with a script or assemble your narrative in the editing suite, you can use powerful new Speech Search technology in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 to turn spoken dialogue into text-based metadata that makes your video searchable. This new capability solves one of the biggest challenges in taking video online by automatically turning any spoken word into a keyword that points precisely to the places in a clip where the word is spoken. This unleashes considerable power, for both post-production professionals and all of us who watch video online. During the editing process, creative professionals can use Speech Search to quickly find the relevant points in a particular clip, or easily locate the right clip based on what gets said in it. Equally important, the time-accurate text that corresponds to spoken words is embedded in the output you render from Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, so your video is searchable by other tools that can read XMP metadata, such as search and indexing engines.
In Adobe Premiere Pro, Speech Search can significantly speed the time-consuming process of wading through large quantities of footage to find the relevant clips. For example, you can quickly find all of the clips in a project that contain a particular word, or the opening lines of a scene from the script you're shooting, by searching from the Project panel. Once you've narrowed your search, you can search within a particular clip for a word or phrase by using the Source Monitor, or you can skim the preliminary transcript that appears in the Metadata panel. Both approaches are significantly faster than manually scrubbing through a clip to find, for example, the spot in a long interview where the subject talks about a transformative trip to Zambia. Additionally, you can tab from word to word in the Metadata panel to make edits while ensuring that text remains synchronized to the spoken word.
Industry-leading Blu-ray Disc outputAdobe Encore CS4 software is a versatile, interactive authoring tool for video distribution that allows you to deliver your high-definition work complete with advanced functions such as pop-up menus, subtitles, and more to clients or consumers on standard-definition DVDs and high-definition Blu-ray Discs. From within Encore, open Adobe Premiere Pro sequences and then use the Edit Original command to make a change to the sequence. Any changes you make in Adobe Premiere Pro are automatically reflected in Encore. Plus, Encore reads chapter markers in the sequence.
Further streamline your authoring workflow by using the enhanced flowchart to define and view your project's points and links. New independent variable-zoom functionality and the ability to see the asset's name help streamline your disc- and SWF-file authoring workflow. See exactly what your project is going to look like with the new FireWire Video-out feature, and have ultimate control over your motion menu loop points.

Adobe Premiere Elements 7 ReviewI am NOT a newbie to video editing, in fact I have been an avid user of Adobe Premier Elements for some time now...with ver. 4 being the most recent before the version 7 purchase. Let me get this out in the open, I was disgusted with Adobe PE7 at first because I was trying to edit and burn footage from my same old camcorders....footage that Adobe PE3 and 4 handled just fine. I have tried MULTIPLE projects now and have yet to be able to render or burn a DVD using the MP4 (avc H.264) footage from my Sanyo Xacti or my Samsung NV24HD. Even worse I cannot keep a project of any size open long enough to do any editing before the program gives me a "low on memory" warning and then crashes! Version 4 was crazy enough, as I was always sure to hit the "save" button many times while editing, but this version 7 is a joke for these formats. I can't even add the MP4 files to the time-line without it crashing. Now for the good part and why I give this release a 4 star. I was asked by a buddy to edit and burn some youth football footage from his newly acquired Canon HF10 with SDHC card. I was excited. Although I had no clue what an .mts file was Adonbe PE 7 not only recognized it and imported it quickly...but I proceeded to edit both video and audio (together and separately)as well as burn to a regular DVD (not BluRay). It was a great experience. The only reason I won't give this a 5 star is that Adobe still shows this PE7 program as being compatible with MP4 and I beg to differ as a user...but if you are going the direction I want to go, AVCHD and BluRay, etc...Adobe did something right in this category. I will add that while i am not a big fan of the GUI of Pinnacle Studio Plus 12 it has handled ALL of my format types without a problem. I am running Vista Basic on a Celeron 1.60Ghz processor (Dell Inspiron 530 desktop) with 4GB of ram.
UPDATE: Now that I have purchased my OWN Canon HF10 AVCHD camcorder (1080 high-def) Adobe PE7 is my go-to program for this type of footage. Again, it handles the AVCHD / .mts file format flawlessly. Check out my other reviews for some other programs I have tried like Corel VideoStudio X2 and Magix - Movie Edit pro 14. If you are going to be working with AVCHD, certainly any of the Canon HF series camcorders that put .mts on sdhc flash cards...then I believe Adobe Premier Elements 7 is the best option.Adobe Premiere Elements 7 OverviewPremier Elements 7 WIN

Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 Upgrade ReviewA week after purchasing this upgrade, Adobe announced a new version. I requested a post announcement upgrade but it was denied by adobe because they could not (or would not) handle receipts from Amazon.com
I would strongly suggest purchasing this from a vendor that Adobe supports.
The version I have has poor support for current AVCHD formats and so far all movies I have exported are very jumpy on an Apple TV (unusable). Since Adobe has chosen to not fix this version, but instead release a new version, I pretty much waisted $300. I will switch (after using Premiere for 10 years) to something else because of this experience.
update: over a month and the only response from adobe is they could not open the files I sent them, even though I can click on them on their support page and they open fine. I just tried Vegas and in 10 minutes I could edit better than premire so Im switching to Vegas. bye bye adobe, your support sucks. wish I could get my money back!Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 Upgrade OverviewImprove the video production process with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 software. Top new features of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5
Industry-leading performance with the Mercury Playback Engine The ability to edit HD and higher resolution footage in real time without having to first render it or lower its resolution by transcoding or rewrapping it with an intermediate codec is a post-production dream come true. Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 brings that dream to the desktop with the revolutionary Mercury Playback Engine.
The Mercury Playback Engine provides native 64-bit, GPU-accelerated support for Mac and Windows, yielding dramatic improvements in performance and stability. You can open projects faster, scrub through HD and higher resolution projects fluidly, and handle long-form content and effects-heavy sequences more reliably. Play through most common transitions and effects without waiting for rendering. Plus, you can usually see results instantly when performing tasks such as keying with the new Ultra keyer, applying Gaussian blurs and blend modes to footage, applying multiple color corrections, and working with numerous other effects. The Mercury Playback Engine also makes rendering for final output much faster than before.
The Mercury Playback Engine works hand in hand with NVIDIA CUDA technology that leverages the parallel compute engine in NVIDIA graphics processing units (GPUs) to solve many complex computational problems in a fraction of the time a CPU would take to perform the same task.
In addition, the Mercury Playback Engine takes multitasking to a new level. Utilizing the GPU to accelerate effects, rendering, and other processor-intensive tasks frees your system's CPUs to handle background tasks. The enhanced, native 64-bit system architecture in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 lets you use all available system RAM (up to 128GB in today's computers), so you can run multiple software applications at the same time. This opens the door to powerful timesaving, multitasking workflows. For example, you can simultaneously edit a very complex, effects-laden project in Adobe Premiere Pro while your system's CPUs render an elaborate After Effects composition in the background.
If you're working on a computer or laptop that is unable to play back challenging footage such as 4K RED files or sequences with extensive effects, Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 includes the ability to adjust the playback resolution of your video in the Source Monitor or Program Monitor. Separate Playback and Pause resolutions give you more control over monitoring--with higher resolution footage such as 4K, you can set playback resolution to a lower value for smooth performance (for example 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, or 1/16 resolution), and set Pause resolution to Full. This allows you to quickly check the quality of focus or edge details when playback is paused--useful for when you don't have the luxury of an on-set HD monitor.
Expanded native tapeless workflows Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 builds upon the industry's best native tapeless workflow by offering new native format support for Sony XDCAM HD 50, Panasonic AVCCAM, DPX, and AVC-Intra. Native support for RED R3D files has been enhanced, and native support for video shot with Canon, Nikon, and other DSLR cameras added. These newly supported formats expand existing support for variants of Panasonic P2; Sony XDCAM, XDCAM EX, and XDCAM HD; HDV; and AVCHD.
Open workflows with Apple Final Cut Pro and Avid editing software Whether working solo or in a workgroup that's involved in a large multistudio production, industry professionals typically use a variety of production and post-production tools on virtually every project. Moving media and sequences between tools in complex production pipelines often requires format conversion, specialized plug-ins, tedious workarounds, or a lot of manual work to recreate elements that don't transfer. The ability to share projects and assets between Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro, as well as between Adobe Premiere Pro and Avid NLEs such as Media Composer, means you can share files and timelines without conversion or rendering, preserving commonly used effects and transition.
Faster editing with metadata Metadata plays an essential role in helping efficiently manage and locate media assets throughout the production process. It lets you automatically track crucial details such as where a clip was shot, who's in it, and whether you have the rights to use it in your project. Innovative new metadata features enable the new script-to-screen workflow in Adobe Premiere Pro, bringing new efficiencies to the editing and production process.
Metadata can be created automatically and supplemented manually at any stage of production. For example, at the start of your project, a script written with Adobe Story, a new CS Live online service*, captures vital information and stores it as metadata that can be imported into OnLocation. While you're recording footage directly to disk, OnLocation automatically captures all of the important metadata coming from the camera. Comments you make in the OnLocation Shot List are also stored with each clip as metadata. When clips are imported into Adobe Premiere Pro and other components of CS5 Production Premium, metadata is retained in each application.
During post-production, metadata streamlines searching for clips while you edit. With metadata, you can quickly locate media assets and clips by filename, date, time, camera setting (such as resolution or frame rate), shot location, or any information you've added to your asset or clip. And when you run Speech Search in Adobe Premiere Pro, you can transcribe spoken dialogue that is converted into metadata, making locating particular footage simple.
Cutting-edge storytelling with new Adobe Story (available separately) Adobe Story, a new CS Live online service* for scriptwriting, can help accelerate the process of turning screenplays into finished media. Available separately from Production Premium, the tight integration of Adobe Story with CS5 Production Premium extends the benefits of Adobe Story into broader parts of the production and post-production workflow.
Integration with CS Review Clients, project managers, and members of production teams don't always work in the same location, in the same city, or even in the same country. CS Review, a new CS Live online service*, provides a fast and simple way for teammates and clients to take part in reviewing video sequences, using just a web browser and easy-to-use annotation tools.
Thanks to its integration with Adobe Premiere Pro, unlike other services that offer online review of creative content, CS Review lets you publish a review to the web directly from within Adobe Premiere Pro. Encode sequences in the background and automatically upload them for review and collaboration. When comments are made by colleagues and clients viewing the content in a web browser, comments are dynamically captured and displayed directly in the new Review panel in Adobe Premiere Pro alongside the sequence they relate to. Jump directly to comments in the timeline to efficiently match feedback to specific elements and keep track of review comments in one location.
Because reviews are accessed simply through a web browser, CS Review brings your teammates and clients into the review process in near-real time. When you need to view or archive reviews offline, they can be easily saved as JPG or FLV files.
With CS Review, you can apply password protection to your content, and assign roles to determine who can create a new review, make and respond to comments, or just read comments. The ability to set deadlines, track reviewer participation, and view comments as they are posted help you further manage the review process.
Efficient production and tapeless camera support in Adobe OnLocation CS5 Adobe OnLocation CS5 provides an impressive array of production tools to help you shoot better and faster while saving time and money, both on set and off. New support for tapeless cameras extend the ways you can use OnLocation in your production workflows.
Spot problems in imported tapeless footage. Thanks to new tapeless camera support, you can use the comprehensive software waveform monitor and vectorscope as well as the audio spectrum analyzer in OnLocation to identify image and audio problems in imported files by quickly scanning your footage for audio pops, clipping, and video overbrights.
Streamlined encoding with revamped Adobe Media Encoder With the explosive growth of video on the Internet, there's been a massive shift in how people consume video entertainment. Whether you produce instructional videos, trailers for your independently produced films, or music videos for viewing online or on iPods, distribute your work on YouTube, Vimeo, or Hulu, or output it to broadcast playout servers, being able to efficiently deliver your content in a variety of formats is crucial. Adobe Media Encoder, a separate, 64-bit software application included with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, saves you time by streamlining the process of creating multiple encoded versions of your source files and Adobe Premiere Pro sequences. Adobe Media Encoder features a more intuitive user interface, providing more visual feedback to help you work faster. Save time with the new ability to start the encoding process directly from Adobe Premiere Pro without going to the batch list. Set up multiple items for batch encoding, manage priorities, and control advanced settings for each item individually. Batch encoding lets you use any combination of sequences and clips as sources and encode to a wide variety of video formats, including FLV, F4V, Windows Media, QuickTime, and other popular codecs such as MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, and--new in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5--AVC-Intra and DPX.
Searchable web DVDs and other enhancements in Adobe Encore CS5 Adobe Encore CS5 software is a versatile, interactive authoring tool for video distribution that allows you to deliver your projects beyond DVD and Blu-ray Disc. In a single operation, you can easily turn your DVD and Blu-ray Disc projects into web DVDs that now include a search interface. The new interface gives viewers a more engaging experience by enabling them to search within a web DVD using keywords. During authoring, Encore automatically creates a search database using metadata from speech-analysis text, subtitles in timelines and slideshows, and menu and button names.

Adobe Premiere Elements 8 ReviewAfter upgrading to Premiere Elements 8, I initially had problems similar to what other reviewers have reported. The application was crashing regularly, rendering it unusable. After I spent some time sleuthing (searching the web for forum posts where users were discussing this problem) and figured out how to fix it. Turns out, the problem was related to one of the NVIDIA drivers for my graphics card (see further below for possible fixes if you are experiencing similar issues and use a graphics card with an NVIDIA chipset). Now PRE8 works like a breeze, and I'm enjoying the new "smart" features and the integration with the Elements Organizer that another reviewer also commented on in her exhaustive review.
For those interested in my system's specs, I'm running PRE8 on a Windows 7 64-bit machine w/ an AMD Athlon Dual Core Processor at 2.50 GHz, 8 GB RAM and an ASUS EN8600GTTOP graphics card (which uses the NVIDIA 8600GT chipset) w/ 256 MB RAM.
Since fixing the compatibility problem w/ the NVIDIA driver, I have completed several short video projects (between 4 and 8 minutes long) for which I used various of the "special effects" in PRE8 and did some rotation and cropping, and have used a couple of different output formats (flv and wmv). Of course, I make sure that I close any other resource-hungry applications, such as Firefox and Outlook, before I start PRE8. I have really not experienced any further problems in terms of crashes or sluggishness (hence "works like a breeze"). I have not edited any HD projects using PRE8 since I don't shoot or view HD video.
If you are on the fence at all about this product and/or are wondering if your system specs are sufficient to run PRE8 without trouble, I definitely recommend installing the trial version first that can be downloaded from the Adobe website. I believe the trial runs 30 days, enough time to put the program through the wringer and see how it holds up on your particular system.
For those interested in giving Premiere Elements 8 a try but who experience the frequent crashes and use a graphics card with an NVIDIA GPU (graphics processing unit), here are the possible fixes that I found during my search:
1. If you don't use the NVIDIA 3D goggles (i.e., most people), uninstall the NVIDIA Stereoscopic 3D Driver (in Windows 7/Vista: Control Panel > Programs and Features; in XP: Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs). To reiterate, this will *only* uninstall the driver for the NVIDIA 3D goggles. (Amazon doesn't like people posting URLs for other web sites in their product reviews, but if you want to see the source, search for a thread called "Premiere Elements 8 keeps closing or crashing" in the Adobe Support Forums and scroll down to post #8). [This is the fix that worked for me.]
2. Another possible solution to some compatibility issues that has been reported (see post #39 in the thread "Cannot restart Premiere Elements 8" in the Adobe Support Forums) is turning off the "Threaded Optimization" feature for Premiere Elements in the NVIDIA Control Panel (right-click on empty space on your desktop, click on "NVIDIA Controp Panel"; in menu pane on left, select "Manage 3D Settings"; click on the "Program Settings" tab; browse to and select "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 8.0\Adobe Premiere Elements.exe" (Note: do *not* select "Adobe Premiere Elements 8.0.exe" as this won't do the trick) and click "Open" [Note: for 32-bit systems, replace "Program Files (x86)" with just "Program Files"]; click "Apply" and exit NVIDIA Control Panel.)
3. Lastly, of course it's also always worth a making sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed on your computer. Check the NVIDIA website to see if there are any updates available.
Hope this will help someone who is experiencing compatibility issues w/ PRE8 and their NVIDIA drivers.

Adobe Photoshop & Premiere Elements 8 ReviewI installed this Adobe bundle on a brand new HP PC with a Intel 2 Quad processor and Windows 7, and, while I love Photoshop and some of the upgraded features, Premiere crashed twice the first time I used it and took forever to process. (More on preventing crashes later.) Photoshop is a must-have program. Premiere is a basic, no-frills program with some major issues, designed for composing movies out of digital video clips and still photos.
First, Photoshop: Photoshop Elements remains one of the most powerful image processors for the non-professional user. From special effects to simply improving the look of standard photos, the software can manipulate photos in almost any way you can imagine. Out of the newest features, the most interesting are recomposition tools, size presets, and facial recognition. In the first, the user can unlock the background from the foreground and bring foreground images closer or farther from one another, and can even remove unsightly objects from the photo altogether. With protect and remove brushes, you can even erase your ex from that family photo and bring everyone closer together to fill the empty space. Facial recognition, while quirky at times, works so you can quickly extract all the photos of an individual from your library -- say, you want to delete every photo that contains your ex or print them out for dartboards, and so you call them up to see them all at once. The quirky part comes when the software recognizes that a bird or a gorilla is not a person, but then asks "Who's this?" while pointing to a flower stalk or a print on someone's dress. The facial recognition feature works best if you take the time to fill out names on many photos. Eventually, it recognizes certain people, with or without sunglasses, in profile or full face. The size presets are the most practical improvement, as you can size your photos to standard sizes -- say, 4x 6 or 8x 10 -- simply by pulling down a window and selecting.
Now, Premiere: If you are just starting out or don't want to produce movies with a lot of editing and features, Premiere is an okay program, especially if you are buying Photoshop anyway. Those of us who have used Macs and its iMovie program will find this program comparable to what Apple was producing three years ago -- and that should tell PC users how behind Premiere is. The interface is somewhat clunky, and it lacks intuitive editing controls. You can drag and drop clips from your organized media center, add titles, adjust transitions, and use themed templates. The biggest problem comes with frequent crashes when the program simply fails to respond during an operation. Originally, I didn't install the content disk because I wasn't interested in all those templates; however, as soon as I did, the crashes became less frequent. If you plan on doing minimal video work at a leisurely pace, this program should be good enough for your needs. Otherwise . . . well, you might want to use Photoshop's remove brush to cut it out of your picture.
For any digital photographer and PC user, Photoshop is a must-have program. Premiere is another matter; it will frustrate anyone expecting a program as powerful as Photoshop. Take serious stock of your needs before you buy these two programs as a bundle.
NOTE: Because I used this with Windows 7, I cannot say how it works with earlier versions of Windows.

Adobe Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements 7 ReviewI have the Adobe Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements 7 duo installed on my VISTA powered laptop and have worked with them several days. I started using Adobe Photoshop Elements version 3 a number of years ago and thought it was good, but somewhat complicated to use with a long learning curve involved. The new Elements version 7 retains most of the original features and complexity but is upgraded and the tools are more sophisticated in how they are applied and the results they produce.

Some reviewers of Adobe Photoshop Elements have upgraded from version 6 and complain that there is little new in the latest edition. That may be true, but there is a noticeable difference between version 3 and this most recent rendition. One of the most obvious features to appear in version 7 is the addition of on-line storage, photo sharing and available tutorials.

There is an extra charge for Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 "Plus" which provides additional on-line storage space. This is not to imply that Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 "basic" is one of those come-on condensed programs that get bundled in new computers. Photoshop Elements 7 out of the box is a full blown photo editing program and stays that way without any additional charge unless that additional on-line storage is desired. The downside to this option to invest in the "Plus" feature is how the program startup screen nags to join every time the program is opened. So far I haven't found a way to say no thanks--don't bother me with this again.
The Adobe Photoshop Elements programs are consistently rated number one in digital photo editing reviews and that is probably deserved. I recently purchased, installed and started to use the Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate program for editing my photos. This program is often rated number two by reviewers, but it is cheaper than the Adobe software. I like the Corel program a lot, but the Adobe program is equally good and maybe just a bit better in some ways--fancier and more colorful screens for one thing. However, for the advanced amateur digital photographer like me the difference is a matter of which program is easier to use. I think that may be a matter of personal choice in this case.

Now for the Adobe PREMIER Elements 7: This is the program one needs in order to download, construct, edit and produce video/slide show projects. It is the DVD (and Blu-ray) maker lots of editing programs lack. I have previously used a Roxio video making program and found it buggy and without all of the flexibility I wanted. The Adobe Premier Elements 7 program has more options and creative features. It is certainly easier to use than the Roxio software.
As with all of the DVD maker programs, one must have the right computing capacity and the proper DVD burning drive. Older wimpy computers will probably have trouble with Premier Elements 7 and apparently crashes are not uncommon if there isn't enough RAM available. I have the software loaded into a VISTA laptop and not had any problems of note. Saving a project as one goes along is a good thing to do just in case.

This software is primarily and obviously well designed for making movie type videos. However, I have used my Adobe Premier Elements 7 program mostly for creating slide shows from my collections of digital photos and it does a great job. It allows me to organize my pictures add transitions between them in a slide show, put background music in and insert titles too. I like the ability to arrange things in DVD chapters and menus and my finished slide shows surprise me in how professional they look.
So far, I have not had any problem with creating DVD shows that work in my disk players connected to ordinary television sets.
I can recommend both Adobe Premier Elements 7 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 7. The digital photographer just beginning to edit photos and videos will find these programs useful as will the more advanced picture makers.
