CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 Home & Student Edition ReviewI'm a PC user and have used PhotoShop CS2 and PhotoShop Elements and find them really hard to use. The controls are very small and hard to find, everything is iconic with no description available. You have to read a book to find out what each icon means.
Also PhotoShop is overpriced (USD $1000 for the Ultra version) so I have been using Gimp for photo editing. But Corel DRAW and Corel Photo Paint beat them both in the Price/Performance ratio. Its way more intuitive to use than both Gimp and PhotoShop (at least for a PC user). Tools are easy to find, without reading any manual I got myself doing masks, color adjustments, etc. The digital filter gallery in PhotoShop is more professional, as if the algorithms yielded a smother quality and surely there are tons of plugin filters out there. The Print Shop Deluxe 15 ReviewEven though there were a lot of negative reviews I bought this product mostly because PC Magazine rated it one of the best (5 stars) and the price can't be beat with the discounts. Here's my take if you read the other reviews like I did.
This program tries to make it easy to start a project (with a walk through wizard) but with any publishing software, you have to know what you are doing. That includes understanding your printer settings, etc. Yes, printer settings can be changed with the program (as with most any software) so it will take some time for inexperienced users to understand how to use it properly.
I must say, this program offers a ton of nice clip art, photos, etc than most other programs in this class. It has 2 CD's full of clipart but you'll need a lot of disk space to install it all. The broadband version of PrintShop accesses the clipart from the internet but with big hard drives available these days, save yourself some headache and buy the regular software, not the broadband one. If you don't have a lot of harddrive space (a few gigs to spare) I wouldn't suggest buying this.
There is no user manual included and the help files are not as in depth as I would like. I find it hard to believe that a complicated program such as this does not have at least a printable copy of a user manual. So be warned, if you not an experienced software user this product might not be for you.
I also saw some negative reviews on photo editing/printing. I haven't tried it so I can't compare. (I use other software for photo editing and printing). There are a lot of great photo editing software packages available. If you're purchasing this for that reason, you might want to look somewhere else. This thing is for printing out greeting cards, postcards, and things of that nature. I guess you can be thankful that there is photo editing features with this at all.
Final take - For someone who has used software since they were young and does for a living, I could figure most things out on my own. If you are inexperienced, you may find this product frustrating. The Print Shop 2.0 Professional ReviewI was using The Print Shop 22 De Luxe on a Vista computer. I installed Windows 7 and found 22 would not work. Broderbund said they were working on a totally new version (oddly called 2.0). When it became available, I purchased 2.0 DeLuxe through Amazon, and was very disappointed. It worked with Windows 7, but lacked many of the features that 22 DeLuxe had (eg headlines,fixing flaws in photos,and cropping photos in shapes other than rectangles). I returned it to Amazon and bought (at extra cost) Version 2.0 Professional, hoping it would have the missing features. If they are there, I can't find them. The menus appear to be the same as the DeLuxe version. The Help manual is very superficial and appears to be the same whatever version you buy. In desperation I emailed Broderbund for help but they didn't bother replying. To add to my woes the program frquently crashes and needs restarting. I returned this one to Amazon too.
Then I saw a small note on Broderbund's website, saying that Print Shop 23 (the last of the versions of the old program before they totally redid it) would work on Windows 7. I bought it (from Amazon) and it works, and is just marvellous!
Summary. Avoid all versions of The Print Shop 2.0. Buy The Print Shop 23 instead. Serif Digital Scrapbook Artist 2 ReviewI ordered DSA2 in spite of some poor reviews and I'm so glad I did. The program allows users to download a bunch of free kits from Daisy Trail so even though it doesn't come loaded with materials and kits, they are easily available. Of course you can buy more but you don't have to. There is also a voucher included that you can spend at DT. With some searching on the internet I've found tons of free kits, materials and embellishments. The program allows you to create your own kits (Digikits) and add to them at a later time. It doesn't cost you an extra dime. The only downfall is spending the time to make your kits. I won't go into all the features as these are listed in the product description. One thing I love about this program is the availability of video tutorials on [...]. DSA2 is loaded with lots of features and to get the most out of it you should spend some time learning how the they work. These tutorial are invaluable. You Tube also has many tutorials. The help button is also useful and is easier to understand than many other program's help features. Also, I found this program very easy to use right out of the box. Of course it took awhile to learn the many features and I'm still learning and exploring. That keeps it from being boring. I'm proud of the scrapbook pages and cards I've made so far. I'm a beginner to scrapbooking and with DSA2 I've created some impressive pages. Although this isn't a slam on DSA2, Serif tends to bombard you with emails trying to sell you their other products. I did get PagePlus X4 and also like it but they do get a little in-your-face on selling programs. For me DSA2 is still a 5 star product. If you came here expecting honest, unbiased reviews of PA Platinum 23, you won't find any right now - instead you'll see about 10 reviews with this disclaimer:

Which is really a roundabout way of them admitting they are rigging the review score.
I'll probably end up buying this product anyway because there are very limited options these days in the category - the golden age of respectable greeting card applications ended about 7 years ago - and when I do I will come back and post an honest review.
I'm not saying don't buy the software, I just want everyone to realize that there is more to these reviews than just 10 generically pleased buyers.

Nova Development US Scrapbook Factory Deluxe 4.0 ReviewI wanted to get started with digital scrapbooking, but most websites I read focused on Photoshop Elements, and purchasing digital paper and elements individually. I wasn't sure that I wanted to spend that kind of time and money, so I decided to give Scrapbook Factory Deluxe 4.0 a try. I've been using this software for several months now, and I really like it! It comes with lots of ready-made templates, which really are completed layouts--just add pictures. The templates are fully editable, though, so you can still add, delete, resize, or move any element or picture. You can also start from scratch, and build your page using the wide variety of backrounds and elements that they provide. If you aren't satisfied with their offerings, you can use any papers or elements that you can find on various websites--the program recognizes most regular file types (such as .jpg, .gif, and .png). Though some of the provided graphics are typical clipart, and not really what most scrappers would use, they still offer quite a lot of backgrounds and embellishments that are wonderful. (And contrary to another reviewer, you CAN change the color--right click the item, choose "edit photo", then the "adjust color" tab.) The software also comes with a pretty good user's manual--that seems rare for software these days! Very useful for getting an idea of all the different things you can do with this software. You can also save completed pages as a .jpg or .pdf file for printing or to give to other people.
There are a few things I'd like to see improved. 1. I'd like a better tool for finding and importing the photos. 2. I'd like more templates in the landscape format. 3. I'd like a viewer that would show 2 pages side-by-side.
**Important Note** Read the system requirements carefully! The entire program gets loaded onto the hard drive, and takes over 3 Gbytes. It's also a resource-hog when running; if your computer is too old, you will NOT have fun trying to run it!
All in all, this program is easy to learn and use. It gives you as much or as little control over the layout as you want. Microsoft Publisher 2007 Version Upgrade ReviewMicrosoft Publisher is one of the few programs that I have used every day since Version 1 (the other is Quicken). I have purchased every new upgrade to both programs and literally could not be without either. When Publisher 2003 came out, it was a fairly substantial improvement over its predecessor in both format and functionality. Now that I am using a brand-new computer with Windows Vista and the latest version of MS Office, I decided to get the 2007 upgrade to Publisher. I am very disappointed. Not that it's bad ... Publisher is still a very useful program ... but that it is virtually identical to the 2003 version, including the same old tacky and dated 1990's templates. Sure there are a few enhancements, but the user interface takes a step backwards and reminds me of Windows 98 and like Vista and Office, what used to take one keystroke now takes 2 or 3. It has none of the cool and useful new look or features of the other Office 2007 products. Quite honestly, I believe Microsoft should have made this a free download rather than to pawn it off as a whole new version. Since I am still a big fan of Publisher I will have to split my review into two parts: the full-version of Publisher at 149 dollars is worth 5 stars and I would recommend it to anyone who has never used Publisher. The Print Shop 2.0 Deluxe ReviewI purchased this to replace version 23 thinking that it would be an improvement on some of the problem areas (such as the database function). Boy, was I mistaken. When I received the disk, it had scratches and could not be read in any of my computers. After polishing the disk I finally got it to read. After installing it I realized that none of the old projects will work with the new version. That was a bummer, just by itself, but the real problem with this new version is that it doesn't do half the things the older one did.
The first project I needed to use it for became a real challenge. I wanted to make address labels for set of cards I was sending out family about my parents move. First, there is no internal database feature at all in the new version. It used extracts from your email program in a format that my email doesn't support. After doing a lot of research, I was finally able to get around that problem and then found that the only way it will print labels is to print a full page of them. I thought I must be doing something wrong so I went to the help which is almost useless. Then I tried the Broderbund website support section which was no help because there are no tips generated for this product yet. I finally put in trouble request. This was something I was familiar with because I had already put in a trouble request concerning my unreadable disk. The email reply that comes as a result of this, tells you that you will receive a reply within 48 hours, but that if your question has already been asked and there is a tip on it they will not reply at all.
As I am writing this, about 2 weeks have passed since I submitted these trouble tickets. I have not received a reply to either one and there are no FAQs that answer them. My guess is that they are so inundated by trouble tickets on this product that they have decided to just ignore them all. Shame on you Broderbund. After being a loyal customer for years, I will not be purchasing any more Broderbund products until they decide to actually start providing support.
Some may ask why I just used email to contact them. The answer is simple, the only telephone number they offer for support is long distance (no toll free) and it is listed with a warning to expect hold times averaging 30 minutes or more. I really couldn't see dumping more money into the hole called The Print Shop 2.0 Deluxe.

Adobe Pagemaker 7.0.2 (Upgrade Version) ReviewTo add a little to the previous review, it is an upgrade as it says. Typically any software upgrade expects to find a previous installed version, and this is no exception. My previous install is Pagemaker 6.5. The Pagemaker 7.0.2 upgrade found it, but it also asked me to enter its serial number, so write it down before you start or you'll have to exit install and then start again...damhikt. And of course it wants the new serial number which is on the CD box. Past that and all goes well. It does not overwrite or replace the previous version, so in my case I have a functioning 6.5 and 7.0.2 should I want that.
This new (and what I guess will be the last) release of Pagemaker doesn't differ a lot from 6.5. The biggest difference for me is it's compatibility with Photoshop PSD files. Pagemaker 6.5 issues a popup declaring that it doesn't know how to place this filetype, so getting a Photoshop image into this version requires working with a different bitmap filetype (jpg, etc.). But a PSD image places into Pagemaker 7 with no problem, even one that has been "Photoshopped" to include layers, etc.
There are some other bells and whistles, but for me the Photoshop compatibility is the heavy hitter.

I am long-time user of CorelDraw Graphics Suite. I saw a review for VideoStudio Pro X4 on Tekzilla and decidied to get it. I then saw on the Corel web site that CorelDraw Premium Suite X5 included VideoStudio Pro. So I got the product on this page.

Serif PagePlus X5 ReviewIf I could give PagePlus X5 10 stars, I would.
I was using Quark XPress to lay out a book and pulling my hair out, even though Iv'e used it before. I searched the online help, books, in program help and could not find answers -- to a simple thing of how do you put in a page break. They have no such words in their index.
After that frustration, I looked to see if I could find another page layout program. I briefly peeked at InDesign, but honestly had no hopes for it. And, anyway, it's something like $700 (like Quark).
After about 2 weeks of on and off looking, I accidentally found Serif and PagePlus, which from their website is selling for $99. Once I downloaded it and started using it, it took me an entire week to get over the insanity I had worked up over Quark and having no other options and the incredible relief that here was a program that could do what Quark does at fraction of the price and: EASILY!!! It had page breaks! among all sorts of other things.
There's lots of things I love about it and I'll give a list, but will have to come back and add to it as I use it more and learn more.
First of all, GOD! it opens in a fraction of the time that Quark did!!! I can actually press on it and it opens. With Quark, I'd go away and make breakfast. Geeeees.
It has a very nice, user-friendly interface--all the tools are right out, easy to get to, and big enough so you don't have to search hard to find something. Everything is clear enough so, even if you know nothing about the program, you can start working with it.
So here goes a rather unorganized list . . . It has a PDF button right on the tool bar; PDF file opens (if you choose) so you can see what things look like; Warning comes on if fonts are used that are not supported with PDF.
One of THE most ingenious features is WritePlus--it's on the tool bar, you click it and it opens a word processing program right on top of your publication and everything you have laid out in your publication is simply presented in the WordPlus. Whatever you write in WordPlus immediately also goes into your publication. Both are on the screen . . . . So if you're working with a lot of small columns, you can switch to PagePlus and it's a lot easier to work and make corrections.
Same thing with adjusting photos. You open PhotoLab--right on the tool bar and, boom, you have a whole set of tools to adjust your photos. Amazing! They also have the button on the toolbar for PhotoPlus, but that's a program you need to purchase (also around the same price). But, PhotoLab has everything you need. I've also purchased their DrawPlus, which has all sorts of tools--EASY to use, and also includes photo adjusting stuff. So between PagePlus and DrawPlus, I have absolutely everything I need to lay out books and do whatever I need to create for my websites.
O.K., besides saving in PDF, you can save files in RTF and convert them to a million different things like JPEG, etc.
You can import files from Word into Page Plus. Also it opens any PDF documents that you can then edit and work with.
You can have more than one document open at a time, just like in a browser, it will show tabs on top and you can go between them.
They have tons of drawing tools in PagePlus, it's really amazing. Also HEX option for colors. It comes with a bunch of templates.
Quark has a "library" for objects you create to use again and again, well so does PagePlus--it's called Gallery and it's right there and handy.
The help menu is fantastic! The program also comes with a PDF guide for the program. And if you want to buy a guide book, you can purchase it from Serif, which I did, so I can lie around in bed and read it. (I know major dork, but what can I say).
The same way there is a button for Write Plus and PhotoLab, there is something called Image Cutout Studio that lets you manipulate images. I've not had a need for that just yet, but am curious to explore further. It opens up the same way, on a small screen in front of the main project you're working on.
You can use PagePlus for regular basic documents (they have templates, like flyers, business cards, booklets (now I don't have to use Publisher nay more either); books and also web. Or you can convert a print publication to a web publication.
There is a bunch more stuff, but this is already too long.
Mostly what I love is the ease of use. It's an amazing combination of powerful tools, yet very easy to use.
I write and PagePlus solves all my writing needs. When I am working on a novel, I can have all the tabs open: for character, plot, content . . . and add easily. If I am writing on a book I want to self-publish, I can lay it out and use WritePlus to write it. Easy!
I'll add more here as I find out more.
I am just SOOO happy there was some other option--and a far better one at that--than Quark and InDesign -- at $700! Insane.
I like PagePlus so much I want to get two copies. Yup crazy. And I want to get every other Serif product, even though I don't need it, just to enjoy the intelligence of it all.
OH, they also have live technical support. FREE!! Another amazing thing.

Since the above . . . forgot to say there is a thesaurus built into PagePlus.
Also, I've laid out a book, soon to be selling on Amazon: The Workings of Energy in the Human Energy Field: A Psychic's Perspective, and I loved using the program. Discovered, in the process, that the PhotoLab (right on the toolbar), lets you adjust JPEG images--which I had to do with my book cover--without having to go to a photo editor.
The only thing I found as a drawback is their live support team seems to know absolutely nothing. I've called 3 times, and none of those times was the person able to answer my question. I'd end up hanging up with them, and finding the answer myself. This does seem to be better with email. I had one very successful resolution that way.

A feature I used in CorelDraw X3 is the Print function for guttering, fold marks, and crop marks for card making. These are missing from the H & S version. CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X5 ReviewIf you are still running Vista, this release is WAY too slow out of the box, so buy a previous version. It's perfectly speedy on Windows 7.
I'm a professional freelance graphic designer with an illustration background. Having used both Illustrator and CorelDraw for well over 15 (close to 20?) years, here's my position:
- Professional graphic designers must own Adobe's Creative Suite. Anyone who tells you that CorelDraw's suite is a substitute for CS doesn't know what they are talking about. You're already not using a Mac, the industry standard hardware... don't isolate yourself further by not using the industry standard software.
- For non-professionals or office workers who need to create basic reproducible design work, this suite is easier to use than CS. Anything you create you can publish to PDF for printing, and any issues related to effects, etc. can be resolved by converting to 300dpi bitmaps as needed. Anyone who tells you that this is not the case ALSO doesn't know what they are talking about. Any printer who can print a photo can also print anything CorelDraw can generate, period.
- I need and use CorelDraw for this reason: it's simply a better, faster, easier, more natural and more convenient vector drawing tool than Illustrator. Hands down. With plugins installed, Illustrator improves, but it's still a giant pain compared to CorelDraw. Illustrator has a few features I like. When I need them, I just export the result to EPS and bring it over to Draw.
Two cents, spent. Hope it's helpful.
