Cakewalk Home Studio 7 ReviewI've been a long time Cakewalk customer, and have recently upgraded to Sonar Home Studio 7 (XL version, which comes with with a few free addons). I am not a happy customer.
First, I had a pre-purchase question that took Cakewalk customer service 6 days to answer by email. Not very responsive. I called their customer support phone number during the hours listed on the website, and twice got a recording that said to call during customer hours(!) I finally got through, and received an answer to my simple upgrade inquiry.
Before purchasing I gave the full Sonar Studio 8 trial version a test run, but -- oddly enough -- couldn't get it working on a lean mean computer that easily runs Reaper, FL Studio, Band-in-a-Box, EnergyXT2, Audacity, and numerous other music production programs. I might have put a bit more effort into trying to get the full Sonar program running, but in their wisdom, Cakewalk does not offer a PDF manual online (it must be top secret!) Needless to say, it is impossible to work from their scanty help files.
Instead, I settled on Home Studio, and purchased it with some confidence that it would run properly since earlier versions of that program have run just fine on my computer. I may never find out whether I was right.
It appears that the program disk is not shipped with any kind of serial number. Okay. So I check my purchase confirmation email, and it says that the number can be found on my Cakewalk account online. Then I look in the "Registrations" page online and interestingly, all of my previous purchases are listed, but no information on my newest purchase. Okay, so I check tech support. That page claims that the serial number was sent to me by email. Endless loop. Nice. I'm still waiting to use the program, trying to track down the serial number, and somehow suspicious whether it will even install properly.
Reaper is less expensive, has a great community of supporters, and you can test the full program and get a giant PDF manual. Avoid Cakewalk until they learn the value of customer service in an economic downturn.Cakewalk Home Studio 7 Overview

Finale 2011 Academic ReviewI got Finale 2011 Academic on Amazon for my son, a college student. He loves it. He quickly got it registered online and started using it for his music classes. I used it for writing a couple songs and found it slow going until I found the Quick Start Videos under the help Menu. Made a huge difference. Once you get going, it's pretty straightforward. My son's theory prof says he told students to get Finale because it 'does everything.' I'm looking forward to doing more with it when he berings his laptop home for Christmas.Finale 2011 Academic Overview

Cakewalk Music Creator 5 ReviewThe people at Cakewalk indicate that you'll spend more time making music than struggling with the software its not at all true. It takes about 16 hours of work to learn enough about this to use it to make music. The company relies on the generosity of the people on the forums as their documentation and help files. The documentation and help files that ship with the product are inadequate and often inaccurate. To do something as simple as open a midi file, add an audio file, record your audio and export the mix to a mp3 or other audio format is mind boggling complicated and the help does not help. Oh and by the way they don't ship the product with an MP3 codec you have to get your own or buy it. Also they don't allow you to upgrade from music creator 4 to 5 which sucks because the new features in 5 versus 4 are not worth the roughly $40. Having said how hard this is to use and how often you do something the same way twice and get 2 different results you can get a decent recording after you invest the 16 hours of learning and struggling. Hats off to the people who post great help on the forum. Cakewalk should be ashamed of themselves for letting a group of users' who bought the product to serve as the Cakewalk volunteer support staff, this is practically criminal.Cakewalk Music Creator 5 Overview

eMedia Piano and Keyboard Method Deluxe v3 ReviewAt the same time I purchased Alfred's book method. I use the software and then folow up with Alfred's books as theory homework. Between the two I am doing quite well never having touched a piano nor read music before. The fact the software shows me the keying from the animated keyboard and I can hear fwhat it is supposed to sound like. I like that I can use each hand seperately and with the midi keyboard the feedback is fantastic.eMedia Piano and Keyboard Method Deluxe v3 Overview

ACID Music Studio 7 ReviewI will try to make this brief. This is a easy program to use if you are experienced or just learning(like myself). The program pretty much spells everything out for you. But for a program that is based around music it limits you if you do not have the full version of Acid Pro(which is about 300 dollars). For example, if you are recording multiple tracks, you need to create mixing busses. But the program does not save your busses unless you have Acid Pro, so if you record something that has lets say 25 tracks all asigned to busses and then you save it, once you open the project back up all those busses are gone and the program tells you an error occured and it then tells you to buy Acid Pro so this will not happen anymore. This is very frustrating, if you make any projects that involve complex mixing, you basically need to leave your computer on until you finish your work and never want to touch it again, unless you love remixing stuff. There is also a strange thing where you can't automate panning and volumes from the busses, you have to pull up an "envelope" on the track and create bullet points to adjust these things. I find it to be tedious and strange, when other porgrams such as Pro Tools allow you to automate much easier. Overall this is a decent program, but it has its frustrations and does not work fully unless you want to buy the full 300 dollar program.ACID Music Studio 7 Overview

PreSonus Studio One Artist to Pro Upgrade ReviewDo the research. Cubase, Abelton, ProTools and the list goes on. I have done my homework and I know my budget. You can't get all the features this Pro version offers for less than $600. And THAT is an upgrade from their "light" (AKA "Lite" or "LE") versions or freeware that come with a product that is overpriced for the "free" software. I bought the AudioBox USB for $150 and was going to use it with the DAW I already own. After installing the "free" Studio One Artist that came with it, I realized it is 100 times better than any of the "light" versions of various DAWs I have receied and decided to go ahead and upgrade through their website. I am AMAZED. Not only does it give you 64 bit processing, it gives you the ability to digitally publish your music. Yeah, to any website you want. You can use Redbox CD, Facebook, MySpace, whatever. You can even publish to SoundCloud directly within the software. And it comes with GIGS of more instruments and loops. It has VST plug in support, too. Oh, and you just want to export to MP3's, make a CD for your friends? It has that, too. Try finding a DAW with this one's simplicity and "never-done-this-before" ease and I'll pay you back. I've been at this for 23 years. I know Cubase, Cakewalk, Ableton, ProTools and Logic and they are all great. However, all of them require a serious amount of dedication and education to be able to even mix down a single song. My 12-year-old can use Studio One (sorry, Kevin, it's true) to master a CD. You can't say that for any of the other DAWs that cost at least half as much more. Don't believe me, download the 30 day free trial from the PreSonus website and see for yourself. Just come back here to buy it since this is where you found it.PreSonus Studio One Artist to Pro Upgrade Overview

Nero Multimedia Suite 10 ReviewPurchased this software with the expectations it could produce a decent quality DVD image.
My wife and I spent weeks producing a DVD of our son's christening using Nero Vision 10 which was all shot on a Sony HDR-CX350v in FX mode (24Mbps). When it's burnt to DVD, the picture quality looks like something shot through a lens covered in Vaseline, the original footage (1080i) is crystal clear however.
I tried every option, "Motion-adaptive Deinterlacing" (checked/unchecked), "Sample Format" (tried every option), "Encoding mode" (tried Fast encoding (1-pass) and High Quality (2-pass VBR)).
It all produces this same rubbish DVD render quality. This has been discussed on the Nero forums and Nero are yet to admit to a problem.
I downloaded a trial version of Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10, created a simple movie, added some of the clips I used in my Nero project, burnt to DVD just using the default Vegas settings and the difference between the Sony Vegas DVD and the Nero DVD are like night and day.
Some of my clips show footage inside a church, on the Vegas DVD details are crisp and clear. In the Nero DVD, details are blurred to the point you can't even make out the patterns on people's clothing.
Nero 10 is garbage and I wish I could get my money back on this product.
Avoid at all costs. I think Sony Vegas will be my next purchase.Nero Multimedia Suite 10 OverviewFinally, multimedia software that truly does what you need. Nero 11 empowers you to create, manage and share your photos, music and videos like never before.
