QuickBooks Premier Professional Services 2011 - ReviewReviewing: QuickBooks Premier 2011 - "Professional Services" edition
(Specifically meant for consulting type industries...at additional cost!)
If you run/work as a consulting based business, billing based on hours put into a job, and getting paid for hours put into a job - this software sounds like a perfect fit. It's not.
The Pros:
The base QB software has an appealing layout and is easy to use.
Set-up is time consuming, but easy. (What I would expect from a software that tracks and links so much information.)
The Cons:
The "Time Tracking/Billing" functions are poorly integrated. Commands to access time based items are clumsy, and separate from the way it's done for the rest of the program. Choices for how to handle the data is limited as well.
Creating an invoice based on time does work. However, there is no link/data to later show the time billed landed on Invoice #xxx, or how much of which employee(s) time went to Invoice #xxx.
My company bills based on the hours put into a job. Once the invoice has been paid by the client, THEN we get paid...also based on the number of hours that we contributed towards that invoice.
Since you can't track which hours went to which invoice, you also can't issue checks based on specific time contributions.
(You CAN write a check based on time periods. Meaning, a week or two at a time. But you can not filter by client, job, or invoice. So, if you worked on 6 jobs, for 6 different clients...you would have to pay yourself for all six of them, even if the clients hadn't been billed yet.)
The Bottom Line:
If you are a consulting type company who bills and gets paid based on hours contributed...this software is NOT ready for you.
For now, I'm returning my copy. I hope they enhance the time functionality, and I hope they integrate it MUCH better as well. If they do, I will try it again.QuickBooks Premier Professional Services 2011 - Overview

QuickBooks Premier Manufacturing & Wholesale 2011 - ReviewI don't know why Quickbooks actually disables some features of a customer's system after three years, but they do. In my case the email feature was locked out, forcing me to laboriously produce pdfs and then emailing them by attachment rather than from within Quickbooks. So, another $300 for a new version, and the function is back on. I don't see any improvements or changes that are substantial in this new version, except the clock hasn't run out on it yet.

QuickBooks Simple Start 2010 ReviewHaving had a much earlier version of Quickbooks that I was used to, I purchased Simple Start for my business bookkeeping. I knew that my old records would not transfer to the new version because it wasn't the Pro version, but since I was starting over at the beginning of the year I switched to Simple Start because I didn't need the features from the Pro version. Instead of purchasing the download I purchased the actual disc so I would have it. It didn't install. It wouldn't install without Internet Explorer--at all--no way. I had to install that. Quickbooks still wouldn't install. After an hour on the phone with Intuit Customer Service they finally got it to work. It seems to have been missing an essential file. Some of that hour on the phone was spent with me insisting that I did not need to upgrade to Pro and that I really didn't need their expensive customer care package with a monthly fee (because they don't do customer support for most issues unless you pay for it along with the on-line back-up). They were pretty insistent that I NEEDED both. I don't.
Now that the program is actually working I find it to be more user friendly than the old version and the help feature is pretty good and you can get help from other Quickbooks users if you have a question. However, the entire program is dotted with Intuit upgrade advertisement and pop-ups. It's really annoying. I dislike the direction that Intuit has gone with their over bearing advertising. I already bought your product. Give me a break. QuickBooks Pro 2008 ReviewI'd like to say first off that the tech support for QuickBooks Pro is poor unless you get an American on the phone. I guess for a program that costs less than $200 you can't expect unlimited free tech support from US reps but it would be nice if you could get one on the phone once in a while or perhaps pay a little extra to speak to Americans only. We decided to pay the extra for QB Enterprise, not because we really needed it but because of the Tech support plans. It's amazing how good the Tech support is when your willing to shell out a couple thousand $$ and then agree to a $750 a year renewal fee. Still though, it's much cheaper than talking to my accountant and the Enterprise technical support is generally outstanding. They will go out of their way to make sure you have everything you could ever need. You still will sometimes get a goof ball if you call at odd hours and very occasionally when you call during normal hours in but for the most part everyone you speak to is located in the US.
The product itself had some problems back in 2006 when they released this new type of QuickBooks. We quickly because frustrated with hosting issues, slowness, having to install it on our server, errors logging into the file etc..
2008 however has been very good thus-far. It's not that big of an improvement although I do appreciate the fact that it integrates with Outlook. The new help system also seems to have a pretty big improvement. Some of the other complaints I've read seem mislead and/or petty...some of this is no doubt the poor technical support from India. For example, one person mentions that after 8 years they still can't import transactions. Sure you can! We've imported AR and AP transactions using import through iif. The tech support person we talked to sent us templates on how to get this done and while it's pretty clunky it gets the job done. Sometimes I can't get the "exact" report I want or I wish it did something a little better but the problem is that all businesses are different and it's impossible to have a program that will please everyone all the time.
The things QuickBooks does well FAR EXCEED what it doesn't do. It makes accounting incredibly easy for a business owner, reports are pretty darn flexible. If their not flexible enough for you, upgrade to the Enterprise Edition and you get a Read ODBC driver that allows you to Query the database using SQL and make all sort of fancy reports in Access and Crystal. The biggest strength to this program is it's ability to be a jack of all trades. In one of the reviews someone is complaining about having to use Excel with QuickBooks to get the report they want but that is such a small gripe. The fact is that QuickBooks has a feature that allows you to export to Excel and customize things to your liking if you don't like exactly how they've done it. That's a benefit not a downside! They have taken the time to integrate with other products so well which I think is one of this products biggest strengths.
The woman who has to rebuild her file repeatedly sounds like she has data damage in her file, something that has only happened to us once in 6 years and it was very minor. She also says she's getting a switch to message several hundred times? That's not normal. I've seen QuickBooks running on several hundred of my clients PCs without seeing that error. I can tell you from personal every day experience that the product runs fast if you take the time to set it up right, have decent computers (1-2gb of RAM is standard these days), and a decent server if your using a multi-user edition to hold the data file and take the "brunt" of the workload.
If you have an anti-virus program make sure to have it exclude the QuickBooks processes! We had an issue with our file giving strange errors when we would open it that were similar to the switch-to message. The file was also running unbearably slow for a couple weeks. I eventually started booting the computers in selective startup and was able to determine the Anti Virus was at fault. I excluded the QBW32.exe process and everything has worked great ever since.
The bottom line is that for users that already have 2006 or 2007, this is a small upgrade that's probably not worth it. I think most people like myself become spoiled over time from how easy this program really is to use and find ourselves frustrated when it doesn't do everything just perfect.
If your looking for an accounting package for the first time, this is the one to buy look no further. QuickBooks is supported by so many accountants that choosing another version of software in my opinion is a poor financial business move. Not only do you have to go out of your way to find an accountant that knows how to use Microsoft accounting or any of the other small Accounting packages but you may also have to pay a premium for their help because they are such a rarity.
This program is incredibly simple, offers just about everything you could ask for in reporting, 3rd party integration, emailing, creating sales and purchase transactions, taking care of your taxes, automatically sending your file to your accountant, I could go on for a while. Get it, it's the only accounting software I would recommend to anyone. If only they would offer their US support for less $ I would have given this 5 stars. 5 stars for the program, 1 star for Pro tech support, 5 stars for QuickBooks Enterprise tech support if you can afford it.QuickBooks Pro 2008 OverviewQuickbooks Pro 2008 retail SML PKG

Wait until they are forced to upgrade by Intuit at an astronomical price as see what their reviews are. I have QB Pro 2008 that I am being forced to update. The basic payroll subscription through Intuit is now $299.00. Thats for BASIC payroll through Intuit. Not only that, they have downgraded the features substantially for the SAME payroll service. At some point, we the consumers must say ENOUGH! They have obviously monopolized the market so that they can charge whatever they want. I will be searching for new alternatives. QuickBooks Premier Contractor 2012 ReviewWe got Quickbooks Contractor because we wanted a one-stop accounting program. "It can do payroll, billing, tracking, blah blah blah blah". What they DON'T tell you is things such as "If you want to use the payroll function and it do all the taxes and math for you, then it will cost you an additional yearly subscription of $395..."!!!!!! Why the h*ll would this NOT be included in the program???????? If I want to do everything by hand, then why buy Quickbooks at all????? I didn't buy the program so that I could subscribe to half a dozen features that SHOULD be included in an "accounting" program!!!
From everything I have read and from what little experience I have had with Quickbooks thus far, Intuit seems like a company whose sole purpose is to see how much money they can milk the customer out of.

QuickBooks Premier Nonprofit 2010 ReviewI use QuickBooks Nonprofit to manage both the business accounts as well as track donations for the nonprofit that I work for. I've been using QBs for over 3 years, largely because our outside accounting service also uses it and for data interpolation it's important for us to be using the same software. If it wasn't for that reason, it's unlikely that I would continue to use it.
The primary reason that I find QBs to be inferior for nonprofit use in particular is QuickBook's inability to print a meaningful year end giving summary for a list of donors. Sure, you can print a donor summary, but it doesn't format the letter into something easily printed and put into a standard windowed envelope, nor is it possible to print a large set of letters for every donor--something virtually every nonprofit needs to do if they receive private donations! This is such a disastrous failure on Intuit's part that it blows the mind that they market this software as a 'premium' option for non-profits! A program lacking basic functionality that virtually all non-profits require is at its core FLAWED. This functionality has been missing for the last 3 years and even Intuits site acknowledges its absence--but with no indication if it will (ever?) be added.
I've used many versions of software to track donations (Membership Plus for example) and even the poorest of them had the ability to print simple donor giving summaries in a letter format. The total absence of this functionality in QBs is inexcusable. There is a way to generate donor letters but it requires buying a separate piece of software from Beyond The Ledgers (google it), a third party software company, at an additional cost. At the 'premium' price Intuit sells QBs for, that should NOT be necessary!
Another major problem with QBs is that the database model is built off something from the early nineties. You cannot custom edit fields or remove fields you don't use, so expect to do A LOT of clicking around or repetitious use of the TAB key to navigate. They erred on the side of including EVERY possible data field, but with no way to police them down to something manageable, it just feels like bloat. Seriously, in 2010 WHY can't I make/edit/remove fields? The answer is the underlying architecture of QBs in general which is sadly dated and makes Microsoft Access look amazing.
That said, other than missing a pretty key feature, QBs works very well for tracking expenses, generating checks, managing payroll, and virtually all other financial reporting and accounting. The interface is great (and even better in this 2010 release) and easy to navigate even if it is dated in a lot of other ways. Generating reports is simple enough, as is memorizing them and running multiple reports on a weekly or monthly basis. QBs is a workhorse at a great number of tasks, it is just too slow on it's feet and has really started to show it's age. Throw whatever GUI (graphic user interface) or skin on it you want, but it's still old and missing many of the simplifications that would really make it shine.
There are better options out there in my opinion. Primarily Access ACS which is what I would be using if not for the aforementioned limitation of needing to run the same software as our accountant. With the aid of the MACRO excel sheet purchased from Beyond the Ledgers, getting donor letters printed every December 31st isn't impossible, just more difficult than it needs to be, especially at the price of this software.
2.5./5 stars. Cannot custom control fields. Cannot police or remove fields. Cannot easily generate and print donor giving statements. Inferior at this price and not acceptable for something marketed as 'premier.'

QuickBooks Pro 3-User 2011 - ReviewWe've been using Quickbooks in our manufacturing business since 1993 and I was a big fan of Quickbooks until I was forced to buy this version in order to keep using Intuit Assisted Payroll. We should have switched payroll systems and stuck to our 2008 version of Pro Multi-user.
The changes to the networking for multi-user access do not work on an otherwise perfectly functioning network. It's not our network. This has crippled our business. The old Quickbooks ran fine and our custom manufacturing software uses intensive file-sharing on the same network without any problems.
There are no productivity enhancements in this new version that we will use.
Basically we have a single user program. I'm looking for a new accounting package after 18 years.

QuickBooks Pro 2010 ReviewI could not agree more with some of the customers' reviews here on Amazon: QB Pro on Windows 7 64-bit cannot be used for your business.
Our company upgraded our computers to Windows 7 64-bit along with Quickbooks 2010 to try it out, but have not transitioned the whole company over to QB 2010 because it just has so many things that don't work.
The most important issue that the fact that printing just doesn't work consistently, neither for pdf's (sending estimates, POs, reconciliation) nor simply printing invoices and receipts. If you try to follow suggestions posted on QB support discussion forums, the fix lasts about a day or so. After rebooting your computer or even QB again, the issue begins again. It's impossible to run a business with Quickbooks 2010 if one cannot print. For non-QB programs, printing works perfectly. So this is clearly a QB problem.
Due to the above, we've resorted to running the business with Quickbooks 2006 with off our older computers that have Windows XP 32-bit. Completely frustrating.
I'm not a person who likes to criticize products. I'm providing this review to simply warn users who have Windows 7 64-bit to really stay away from Quickbooks from 2010 until Intuit resolves the issue. It's really unfair that QB is asking us to pay for customer support when the issue is clearly because the product does not work.

QuickBooks Pro 2011 - ReviewAs a consultant to small business I have promoted Quick books for the past 14 years.
Overall the software is excellent and it does an excellent job of tracking your business finances.
The original cost of the program is very inexpensive, even if you upgrade every year you will spend less then $200/year.( I recommend upgrading every 2nd or 3rd year )
Even though Intuit charges extra for Add On services (such as support, payroll, off site backup, etc) these are still reasonable priced for the service you get. In the end you should only be paying for the services you need. ( While there are cheaper alternatives for many of Intuit's services, in some cases it may be worthwhile to do it all through Intuit.)BUT............be very careful when dealing with Intuit.
Today I tried to reorder checks. It took almost 30min on the phone, and in the end the sales rep signed me up for 2 additional services that I had specifically told him I wasn't interest in.
It took me over an hour to cancel those services. (3 phone calls)I continually have problems when dealing with Intuit's customer support(not Tech support). While eventually they correct the problems, it always seams to take a while. I usually do something like clean out my email while I am waiting on hold to be transferred to the person that can fix the problem.When dealing with Intuit always double check your order, and double check what intuit is charging you.
I recently found that Intuit had been charging a client for 2 payroll subscriptions each year(Even though they were both for the same tax ID number and one subscription hadn't had any activity for 3 years).Be patience and very clear on the phone. The will continually try to up sell you services.Also I would not recommended that you buy any supplies from Intuit, they are expensive and the pressure to add on services is very annoying.
