QuickBooks Premier Professional Services 2011 - ReviewReviewing: QuickBooks Premier 2011 - "Professional Services" edition
(Specifically meant for consulting type industries...at additional cost!)
If you run/work as a consulting based business, billing based on hours put into a job, and getting paid for hours put into a job - this software sounds like a perfect fit. It's not.
The Pros:
The base QB software has an appealing layout and is easy to use.
Set-up is time consuming, but easy. (What I would expect from a software that tracks and links so much information.)
The Cons:
The "Time Tracking/Billing" functions are poorly integrated. Commands to access time based items are clumsy, and separate from the way it's done for the rest of the program. Choices for how to handle the data is limited as well.
Creating an invoice based on time does work. However, there is no link/data to later show the time billed landed on Invoice #xxx, or how much of which employee(s) time went to Invoice #xxx.
My company bills based on the hours put into a job. Once the invoice has been paid by the client, THEN we get paid...also based on the number of hours that we contributed towards that invoice.
Since you can't track which hours went to which invoice, you also can't issue checks based on specific time contributions.
(You CAN write a check based on time periods. Meaning, a week or two at a time. But you can not filter by client, job, or invoice. So, if you worked on 6 jobs, for 6 different clients...you would have to pay yourself for all six of them, even if the clients hadn't been billed yet.)
The Bottom Line:
If you are a consulting type company who bills and gets paid based on hours contributed...this software is NOT ready for you.
For now, I'm returning my copy. I hope they enhance the time functionality, and I hope they integrate it MUCH better as well. If they do, I will try it again.QuickBooks Premier Professional Services 2011 - Overview

Quicken Home & Business 2009 ReviewI've used Quicken for 15yrs+, buy every major upgrade. But this one has no new significant features, it adveritses some, but they don't stand out. I think there might be some extension of current features, but it's not changed my organization or advanced my reporting or insight in any new ways. I would not buy this particular upgrade had I known how insignificant this upgrade is for current users. I gave three stars because overall Quicken is still a GREAT product, just a useless upgrade for current users.Quicken Home & Business 2009 OverviewQuicken Home and Business makes it simple to manage all your personal and business finances in one place— so you can see how your business is doing.

Money Plus Deluxe - Old Version ReviewI tried upgrading from Quicken 2007 to Quicken 2008 and was unable to do so without errors that caused my new installation to give an error message, remove new changes, and stop the installation.
I called Quicken tech support and the guy in India (while nice) could only help me do the same things I'd already done and that did not work. After 2 tries, he said, "I don't have any other ways to help you. Try calling Microsoft and see if they can help you. Here's their 800 number . . . Goodbye!" He hung up on me.
I decided to download Money 2008 for their trial period. Money installed immediately and completely! It transferred my Quicken data accurately and fully. (I have used Quicken for at least 16 years and this was a "big" change for me.)
I ended-up purchasing Money - on-line - from Microsoft and making my full change to their financial software, within a week from trying Money 2008. I was VERY HAPPY with the way Money worked, its interface, and its various options. It was easy to change from Quicken!!

MOST OF ALL, I liked being able to get tech support from Money's email help. My actual experience was to have an email within 4 hours, that included a name and phone number if I needed more help. (I had a small problem inputing my serial number because I had my system set to a larger than normal sized font. Money would not allow the necessary information for each spaced section. Their tech support wrote back to me with the help (answer) I needed - I had to reset the system font size to normal (which they told me how to easily do. My serial number information was immediately accepted with no problem. Now, I am the happy owner of Money 2008 and no longer an Intuit/Quicken user.
I must say, my only disliked feature of Money 2008 is it wants to send each electronic check I write for paying bills - individually, instead of allowing me to write all my checks and then send them at the same time.

I will take this problem - happily - since I now have updated financial software that is not "buggie" and with no tech support that actually helps me.
I am going to be a Money user from now on. I highly recommend Money 2008.Money Plus Deluxe - Old Version OverviewMicrosoft Money Plus Deluxe automatically consolidates your online accounts in one place. Stay on top of credit and debt while keeping daily finances simple.

Quicken Rental Property Manager 2012 ReviewAs a longtime experienced Quicken user, I can say this product is all marketing hype and little substance. This is a rental property add on to on the Quicken base product which was not designed with any significant input from experienced rental property owners. Not enough functionality. One size fits none. You can easily get where you need using multiple income and expense categories in Quicken. The deposit liability account is pointless. Lease expiration information can be better (should be) maintained in Outlook or your standard calendar function. What the program doesn't get you, Excel can make up the difference in about 5 minutes. Also, the program doesn't want to open the Quicken data base from time to time, but always gets it on the second time. My 2010 version of Quicken never did that. Makes me nervous. I wish I could get my money back, but Quicken doesn't offer the information in or on the product packaging so you'll have to search their website for the details. I tried that but it will cost me 5x more in lost time looking for that than the amount of the refund. Of course you can always deal with the outsourced customer care center in India.Quicken Rental Property Manager 2012 Overview

Microsoft Money Plus Home and Business ReviewSo, after using Microsoft Money Plus Home and Business, I found it to be a rather robust program. The reporting methods, categorizing, connections into the financial institutions, etc. are excellent. I have been a user of both quicken (for business) and money (for personal) for years. I am glad they have finally merged the two properly.
It meets the needs of my small business as well as my personal finance and investments. I would recommend to anyone.
As for the review from C:
I am finding the user rating system on Amazon becoming less and less useful by the day. Charles gives the software a bad rating, not because of his experience with the functionality of the product, but the time line in which the BETA and the production version were released. There are reasons why they call it BETA and you should have known the risks prior to using it as a production software. Just because Microsoft didn't release the final version prior to your BETA trial running out, you mark the software with 1 star. As for the claim that it doesn't let you convert the data to Quicken or Money 2006 is flat out wrong, I have been able to do both (I guess that must have been one of the features not available in the BETA version). Additionally, why are you writing a review on here if you haven't purchased the FULL VERSION of the product. In actuality, you didn't use the software on which you are reviewing, you were using a BETA version.
Finally, I am tired of hearing users complain about MS and how Vista and Office 2007 are bad products just because they weren't adept enough to figure it out and were unwilling to hit the F1 key and read. Enough of my rant, hopefully others are getting sick of this on these reviews as well.

Quicken 2008 Deluxe ReviewI am a long time Quicken user, dating back to 1993. Lately I have used Quicken 2002 Basic ever since August 2001. Sitting on the fence post for several years, looking and listening to the horror stories that others have had with Quicken upgrades made me reluctant to upgrade. So what were my options with a program that is quickly becoming extinct and technical support that is now 3 years since evaporated?
First, I took Microsoft Money up on their trial offer - downloading Microsoft Money Deluxe and took a test drive of the program. 35 Megs of download file later, I installed the program. Installation was a snap. The program found my Quicken 2002 data file and converted it to Money - NO data errors as a result of the conversion (I had only 8 months of data in that file). After playing with it for 20 minutes, entering in several transactions, I didn't like the feel of how the program took my data - it felt like an older program that needed a major amount of work to get it up to date. It reminded me of my Quicken 2002 program with functionality. Needless to say - I dumped it - right then and there.
That left me with Quicken or a full blown accounting package (like Peachtree) as my remaining upgrade options. Quicken became my next choice - taking Quicken up on their 60 day guarantee - what did I have to lose?
Here are my experiences with Quicken 2008 Deluxe thus far:
Installation: For me, this was an upgrade from Quicken 2002 - the only version on my present computer. The installation program found Quicken 2002 and backed up the Quicken 2002 data files in a separate BACKUP file directory in Quicken. The program then uninstalled 2002 and installed 2008 - 10 minutes total time. The end of the CD install, the program looked for patches and program updates on Quicken web site and automatically downloaded and installed these patches - without problems. NO reboot required. NO freeze ups/crashes in the installation process.
Registration: I could not register my program on-line - I am using IE 7.0 and for some reason, even disabling my firewall, shutting off Norton anti-virus and accepting all cookies that Quicken recommends in the error message, I still couldn't connect to register the program. There is a service bulletin of how to disable registration screen that will nag you each time you start the program - I did that and to this time (two days now) - NO registration prompts.
Data Import: I have 8 different data files with data going back to 1/1/94. The oldest (and largest) has 15,000 transactions in it. All of my data files were imported into the Quicken 2008 format without any noticeable data errors. All of my files passed integrity and validation by Quicken before data was converted to 2008.
Bank Download: This was something I have not experienced in Quicken 2002. The banks were not really hot on this point back then when 2002 was released. I was with Wells Fargo bank at that time. Wells charged a monthly fee (like they did on everything) to connect with the Wells computer to transact any business through Quicken - I passed - the cost/benefit was not there for me.
That is not the case today. Banks and credit card companies encourage it! What I did fined were some entries of mine that didn't exactly match the banks entries were downloaded and added in to the accounts directly. More so in the credit card transactions area since who you buy from and the name of the entity processing the charge is different. I manually entered these items for years! Duplicates had to be removed and the accounts had to be reverified for accuracy. Now - I have set the download parameters to receive my approval of any changes first before automatically posting to my accounts. Two hours to straighten out that mess! Called: Learning curve.
Stability: I have not experienced any Quicken program loader issues, switch file issues, Splash screen logo issues, data corruption issues that others have experienced when installing and using Quicken 2008. The printing of reports works fine.
I had one crash with 2008 already, but the crash was of my doing. I tried to back out of an on-line transaction too quickly and the program couldn't release my Internet connection before I requested Quicken to perform the next process. After recovery, I went back and reperformed the task, this time being patient. When performing these tasks - be patient - the program eventually responds and releases control back to the user. If not - Quicken will crash! I didn't lose any data as a result of this crash.
In all - this version appears to be stable, or at least as stable as my Quicken 2002 version was.
Backups: ALWAYS! I backup each and every time I exit a Quicken session. The attachments also get backed up in a separate file directory for backup. I don't like the creation of separate file folders for each attachment file, since the program is not generating a separate file name for each attachment. The program does generate a separate file folder name each time an attachment is created. Seems odd to me, but that is the program.
Thus far - Quicken 2008 Deluxe was a good upgrade for me.Quicken 2008 Deluxe OverviewView all your finances in one place1Bring your online accounts -- including banking, credit card, loan, 401(k), and investing accounts -- together all in one place. Quicken 2009 Deluxe ReviewI've been using Quicken Deluxe for about 6 years. I just upgraded to Quicken Deluxe 2009 and it 20 seconds to look at an account and 10 seconds to process any transaction which makes it basically unusable. After working with Quicken support for an hour and verifying the data file, support said that 2009 didn't support large data files well, they suggested I just delete all my old transactions every year and it would be much faster. Of course that defeats the whole purpose of using Quicken.
My quicken data file has about 20MB of data and quicken 2007 used about 200MB of ram to open it. Quicken 2009 now uses about 1.2GB of ram to open the same file.Quicken 2009 Deluxe OverviewQuicken Deluxe simplifies personal finance by helping you find ways to save more, so you can afford the things you really want.

Quicken Premier 2011 - ReviewI have a love hate relationship with Quicken. It is a great concept; it is very helpful in managing personal finances and is a program I use daily. I don't buy the upgrades every year, if they can be called upgrades, but the last version I had was Quicken 2006. I held off buying 2010 for a few months knowing 2011's release was around the corner. I learned I don't like not having access to my finances daily. During that time I tried all sorts of other types of financial programs, but none were close to Quicken, which is scary because as much as I like it, the actual program is TERRIBLE - for length of time it has been available. Mint.com(Owned by Intuit/Quicken) was the only program I thought was very good, but it is terrible for investments. Overall, I see very little difference in this version than my 2006 one; clearly there are a few new features but certainly nothing that made me jump up and down. This is pretty amazing considering the price and the 5 version "upgrades" between, but very little has actually improved. Clearly this is the benefit of having a monopoly; you can do virtually nothing for years and still have the best in breed. In 4 days of using Quicken 2011 it has crashed about 4-5 times a day, same old Quicken.
Quicken 2011 is the best personal finance program available, but the lack of innovation and true upgrades is shocking. The graphical displays are very outdated, and I find the lack of being able to increase text size mind boggling. I hope this version holds me over till the long awaited, fabled, complete overhaul. Or maybe a new company will evade being bought out by Intuit and deliver a superior product. I assume the acquisition of Mint by Intuit will start to actually improve Quicken in the next couple of years.
In conclusion, I give Quicken Premier 2011 3 stars, I can't see it being anymore and am baffled by people upgrading from an older version giving it a higher rating.
EDIT 3/12/11 - Upgrades to Quicken 2011 improved stability a couple months after I purchased. I can say this is a Stable program now on my platform. Does not change the rating.Quicken Premier 2011 - Overview

Quicken Starter Edition 2011 - ReviewI purchased this product because I upgraded to Windows 7 and my old Quicken Deluxe is not W7 compatible. Nowhere in the product description did it mention that I would not be able to open my old files with this product since they were created on the "Deluxe" version. I no longer need any of the "Deluxe" features, that's why I chose this most basic version. So, if you have used any product other than "Basic" in the past, this product will not work for you. TurboTax Home & Business Federal + e-File + State 2010 - Review[I purchased the download version TurboTax Home & Business Federal + e-File + State 2010 [Download], but as this is essentially the same product, I am reviewing it here, too]
I have been a Turbotax user for quite a while, and have definitely seen a progression in quality and features of the Turbotax product. I remember last year, there were some installation issues for some. Turbotax 2010 downloaded and installed on my Windows 7 64-bit quickly and without issue. After executing the program, it immediately downloaded some updates and I was ready to get to work.
As usual, the State software is included free. This year, the integration with the State software seems even better. While the State download wasn't available yet, it gave me options for notification and what the status of availability was.
There doesn't seem to be many new features over last year, in fact, as far as I can tell, they don't come right out and say what is new over last year. However, the ones that are there are very nice:
* The Live Community is integrated even more into the software and is a handy feature. It is context sensitive, so the most popular questions for each section appear when you enter that section.
* There is also a Flags section which allows you to easily mark sections to work on later, which has proven valuable when trying to complete forms for which you only have preliminary data.
* Switching between Forms and Interview seems to be smoother as well, and there seems to be several ways to navigate to exactly the data you want to work on.
* It seems to be all about options, for many areas, the software offers you multiple ways of calculating the data so that you get the best possible return.
* Finally, ItsDeductible is still integrated and is a great tool.
Tax software has a unique problem; the features are to provide the smoothest and fastest tax preparation as possible. So, the better they make the product, the less time I need to work with it.
I plan to update this review as I complete my personal/business returns.** UPDATE 12/28/2010 **
2010 figures are summarized side by side with (imported) 2009 figures, which is very helpful in identifying data that you might still need to enter.
I found that the set of guided questions about entering home office information misleading. Once a home office is added, you must click the Edit button to continue entering more information or else your entry will be incomplete, even though there is really no easy way to tell. That button should be a Start/Update button as found in other sections.
Yes, it is still preliminary, but on the Final Review section it does indeed provide a list of forms that haven't been finalized yet, and an expected due date for each. So you do have some idea of what calculations may change.TurboTax Home & Business Federal + e-File + State 2010 - Overview

TurboTax Deluxe Federal + e-File + State 2010 - ReviewI've been using TT since it was released in DOS, and as part of the installed base, have stuck with it since.
Quite frankly, tax software is now indepensable for me - - - transfer of profile info to the new year, transfer of state carryover payments, carry forward losses, IRA cummulative contributions, etc., integration with State filings, etc. It cuts down the overhead time.
The Question & Answer format continues, and it seems to be a good approach to cover your tax situation. It allows you to "explore on your own" any topic. The sequencing is unchanged -- personal info, income, deductions & credits, and error checking. My advance edition software is really just a template to carry over your previous data from the 2009 filings and an update checker - - as of now (01/10/2011), my tax reforming forms won't arrive until end of January and many IRS still need to be released as 2010 versions. With significant Federal incentive tax changes (like 1st time house credit, green energy credits, etc.) and last minute tax changes in 50 states, I'm sure the Intuit progarmmers are hard at work updating Fed & State forms and schedules. Any TT version you buy and updated in early 2011 will continue to show the "Do Not File" watermark on any return you produce until later in January.
Although I don't remember compared to 2009, the 2010 version will show 2009 numbers side-by-side with 2010 in many places if you import 2009 data to your 2010 file; it helps to give you a visual look at year-to-year variances and perhaps prompt you to do some error-checking on your own.
Last year, I began using the uploading feature that uploads reporting documents/numbers from many financial institutions & payroll processors (like 1099's, W-2, etc.). It's a big convenience but I have a concern on privacy as you have to disclose a lot of confidential data for TT to enter the portals of the FI's and processors. You have to trust TT to dispose of your data once it enter the portals.
In previous years, I had several serious issues w/ TT.
In the California (CA) state from around 2004-2006, it would not transfer my Federal capital losses to Form 540 which has various CA income adjustments such as interest on Federal debt, state debt interest, special CA IRA treatment, etc. Instead, TT added back my Federal carryover capital losses that were used in my Fed Form 1040. This happened for several years but seemed to have been fixed in recent years. I didn't catch this TT error until years later and then I filed a CA 540X to claim the capital losses which amounted to several $thousands in CA tax refund.
In filing Amended CA tax, the older years were very clunky to use -- it was manual, but TurboTax gave me good access to the downloard versions of state software that I purchased on-line years ago but no longer on my current PC. The newer years for State (calif), beginning 2008, were much easier to use when doing amended returns.
I used New York (NY) TT before 2004 and found that the state software did NOT use the HIGHER of standard Deduction and Itemized Deduction. Because NY is a high income tax state, I normally itemized in my Fed 1040, but NY state income tax is not deductible in NY, so typically for me Standard NY Deduction is higher than my Fed Itemized (minus state income tax for NY filing), but TT would transfer my Fed Itemized status to NY. I had to OVERRIDE NY TT to in order to use the higher Standard NY Deduction which resulted in $hundreds of lower NY tax.
Both the above demonstate TT quality assurance is not sufficient.
Creeping State Version price --
Although a State version is packaged w/ most of TT's Federal versions, have you noticed that pricing for a 2nd State is creeping up -- if you work in NY and live in NJ or CT (or DC/VA/MD), have income from a non-resident state, or moved, you will need to buy a 2nd state. The State version used to cost $19.95, then went to $24.95/$29,95 and it's now $39.95 for the 2010 -- can you feel their figurative hand on private parts ?TurboTax Deluxe Federal + e-File + State 2010 - Overview

H&R Block At Home 2010 Premium Federal + State + eFile ReviewI've only really started filling out a return with this year's copy. However, I already see that it will soon be time to jump ship to other software, like TurboTax in the future.
I'm not a tax expert, but I'm fairly capable of figuring out how to enter the correct information on the forms. So, for the most part, the multimedia clips are not usually important to me. I use the software because it allows you to add in or correct information as it comes in, recalculating totals and incorporating data from earlier years automatically.
My main point is this:
I started out using H&R Block tax prep software specifically because it would do all the work on my machine---not on some server I don't control, like TurboTax does. I want full control of my data. I don't want my computer connected to the internet when I'm trying to get this kind of work done (b/c of both security and connection reliability). So, in spite of many better offers for the Turbo Tax software, I've stuck with H&R Block's product. Now, though, the Deduction Pro feature that used to be an executable installed from the HRB install disc isn't even on the install disc anymore. It's been turned into a web-based application. I don't want a web-based app for this, and I wonder if next year the tax prep part will be like that too. Already, it appears that the video tutorials and help require an internet connection and have to be uploaded each time. As far as I can tell, there's not much on the distribution CD except an installer for the main app.
So what's the point in sticking with H&R Block's software, if the main benefit (to me, anyway), distinguishing it from a more highly-rated competitor, is gone?H&R Block At Home 2010 Premium Federal + State + eFile Overview

Quicken Home & Business 2011 - ReviewI was not a beta tester and was not "encouraged" to write a glowing review by Intuit. This review only speaks to the question of whether this is a worthwhile upgrade from the 2010 version. The 2011 version contains very few new features when compared to the 2010 version. Whether you find these new features worth the upgrade price is debatable. The quicken site is a bit misleading in their "new features" list since many of the items they mention were already in the 2010 version. As with past Quicken upgrades, they largely give you MORE of a existing feature, and not much in the way of new features. So, for example, MORE banks are supported for direct connect. MORE transactions can be automatically categorized since auto-categorization already existed. So in these cases, if your banks are already supported and you don't use auto-categorization, then these enhancements are irrelevant. So for those thinking of upgrading from 2010, here's the list of only NEW features in the 2011 version:
- All Transactions register: This could be handy if you use many accounts and want to enter, maintain and view your transactions in one place. However, if you download transactions from your banking and investment institutions, the download window does not show up when you are in this mode, so you will be forced to continue using the individual account registers anyway.
- Register customization: You can decide which columns appear in each individual register. Transaction Notes can now be shown/edited as a column instead of treating them like an attachment.
- Attachment Encryption: I'm fairly certain this wasn't in the prior version. I guess you can now password protect attachments.
- The usual "Where's Waldo" changes to the program: They've moved menu items and eliminated speed button lists in registers. I imagine they did this to make the interface "look" simpler/cleaner, but now you have to rummage through the menus to find them. So, for example, the "Live Community" speed button was eliminated; It is now found as a "Help" menu item. Also, each account's "Overview" speed button has been eliminated; You now find that in the "Account Actions" menu. Since it is likely that the eliminated speed buttons were rarely needed by most users, the changes will be well received. That's it! Is it worth the upgrade? You decide.

TurboTax Home & Business Federal + E-file + State 2011 ReviewI have been using Turbo Tax for about 10 years. In general it is an easy to use program and I have never been audited. I only enter legitimate data that I have a receipt for. If I was to be audited it wouldn't be a big deal.
6 years ago I had gone through the process of filling out all my forms but neglected to save the data prior to entering the E file area of the program. When I saw the state fee for E file, I tried to back out of the E file program section. All of my data prior to my last save was lost. This was about 6 hours of work. I know it was my fault for not saving my data, but I thought that the E file was included in the price of the program. I felt the program should require you to save the data prior to entering a section where the data would be lost if you backed out of the E file section. I called Intuit to let them know what happened and found the response to my issue underwhelming.
The Federal E file is free but the states may charge additional fee of about $20 to E file.
The next year I used an accountant which turned out to be a big mistake. It cost several times the price of the software package and all of my carryover deductions needed to be manually entered. I spent more time putting my information together for the accountant than I had spent in previous years doing the return myself. The accountant just made the deadline and repeatedly called asking for clarifications on deductions.
I learned my lesson from that experience. Now I always use Turbo Tax Home and Business but make sure I save my data throughout the entry process.
I'd give the product 4.5 stars if I could. I find the statement of E file to be slightly deceptive. The state filing is not included in the price the program. Intuit is much clearer about this now than they use to be. You just need to be aware of this and include that cost in your purchase decision. I print and file my state return to avoid the fee. There are also areas of the business deductions that require research from the IRS's website which can be tedious.
The program allows business deductions carry over to future years which save a lot of time and helps maintain accuracy. If you are going to use this program it pays to be a repeat user.

QuickBooks for Mac 2012 ReviewI just upgraded to QB 2011 for Mac in January...because I was forced to. After working on my previous 2007 version a few times in Snow Leopard, I started getting dialogue boxes saying I needed to register my QB, which I ignored because it was already registered. What the dialogue box did not say was that all of my data would begin corrupting after a set number of openings. OK. I didn't like it. I felt connived as did an overwhelming # of reviewers when 2011 came out.
I've rationalized Intuit's strategy and moved on...until now. Less than 10 months later, no free upgrade, not even a moderately priced upgrade. No, Intuit wants another $200 in less than a year for a few more goodies, which, by the way, would be nice improvements.
I like the program! It functions well! I hate this company! BTW, are the posts prior to mine real? They sound more like company generated commercials than real customers. I'm willing to be wrong on this.
I don't doubt this version is actually really good. But I resent being herded into constantly shelling out full price...in less than a year!
5 stars for the product minus 2 stars for economic ethics.QuickBooks for Mac 2012 OverviewNew to QuickBooks?

Quicken Starter Edition 2010 ReviewBefore you read my review, understand this: I have been a quicken user since Quicken 4 for DOS. I have probably owned 10 versions of Quicken in my lifetime.
My last version was quicken 2005 Basic, which was okay, but not as good as the one I had before that. (I was only upgrading bc Intuit crippled it so that I can't import my bank data anymore.) Over the years, the features available in the "beginning tier" have slowly disappeared. Starter 2010 comes with so few features, it hardly qualifies as money management.
I started out pleasantly surprised, because it successfully imported my 2005 data, even though the box said it could only import from 2008 and 2009. But it was all downhill after that.
The only types of accounts it supports are checking, savings, and credit cards. You can't find out what your balance is in your 401k. Can't track how much of your last mortgage payment went to principal vs interest. Can't track your return on stocks. Needless to say, this data won't be available when you fire up TurboTax.
For anyone with online banking, Quicken Starter will offer almost no value. In that case, there is really only one useful feature: expense categorization (i.e., what did I spend my money on last year?). My bank gives me a doc at the end of year with my expenses categorized, so I don't need it, but some people might. I don't know if buying (and rebating if avail to you), installing, entering all the info on a regular basis, etc is worth the hassle.
If you don't have online banking, then you can also use it to balance your checkbook, and remind you to pay bills. That's it. For these kinds of users, I am giving the product a second star, even though there are surely several less expensive apps that do these same basic functions. It is otherwise a 1-star product.
The most shocking aspect of the program was how shoddy it had become. I've always considered Quicken to be a user-friendly, intuitive program. However, in this version, I found myself clicking on buttons repeatedly, because they didn't do anything. I went in and out of the menus because I couldn't find features. In some cases, there would be two buttons, but they overlapped each other, so I'd have to click something else and then the first button would appear again.
In my 20? years of using Quicken, I have rarely had to check the Help/read the manual, and never had to ask someone how to do something. Try this test. Note the heading on Intuit's Starter Edition page[...]. "Simple money management and budgeting" it says in bold. So, you'd expect to be able to create a budget, wouldn't you? I challenge anyone to figure out where to enter a budget. Maybe you'll figure it out eventually, but I never did.
Intuit seems to have lost interest in their lowest tier product, perhaps because they rebate them to 0. In several cases, when I went to Help to try to figure out how to do something, the instructions would tell me to click on something that didn't exist. "To setup a loan, click the Net Worth tab." Presumably, this tab exists in the Deluxe version. Why don't they at least save my time and try to upsell me? "Setting up a loan requires the Deluxe version, upgrade here." At least I would know right away to quit looking. Further evidence that Intuit doesn't respect the Starter Edition: if you go to Intuit's site to compare the "Quicken 2010 Desktop Personal Finance Products", guess what's not even listed? [...]
On the Quicken site, one user suggested that Intuit should stop making this product bc it's an embarrassment. I agree. Someone responded that there's no harm in providing a free "intro" product, but I disagree: many people will be turned off by such a lousy version and never return. Like me.Quicken Starter Edition 2010 OverviewQuicken Starter Edition 2010 offers simple money management and budgeting. Personal finance made easy.

Quicken Rental Property Manager 2011 - ReviewI can't believe I paid money for this junk. Aside from the general bugginess, the unnecessary complexity of its model and the poor UI, this program simply cannot handle basic transactions that you would expect it to.
For example, if you have a typical mortgage payment comprising principal, interest and property tax escrow, there is no automated way to split the payment into those categories for tracking: you must do it yourself each time a payment is made. Also, if you make capital improvements to your property, there is no way to depreciate them -- and even if you do create a "liability account" manually, there is no way to import that information into TurboTax. Additionally, there is no way to map tenants' deposit money to transactions in a cash account: Quicken automatically puts the money into a liability account which cannot be mapped to an actual bank account.
In short: a total joke. Even worse, there is no real competition for managing the financial side of rental properties. Mint.com (owned by the same company) and all the rest are either focused on consumer finances or don't automatically download information from your bank. My advice is to get a spreadsheet and do it yourself.
The only saving grace of this product is a 60-day money-back guarantee. You can be sure I'll be using it.

TurboTax Premier Federal + E-file + State 2011 ReviewI have never had any issues with TurboTax. I've used the product for at least a dozen years, even to do the taxes for a home based business. There is no issue with using the tool or the effectiveness. (Still puzzles me how Tim Geithner couldn't figure it out.) I have a few serious issues that do not affect the use of the product, just personal gripes. The first, is selecting the "right" version for you to use. Effectively, the most basic one will work for everything you need. The pricier versions provide you more "hand holding" through the process rather than just quoting the IRS language. It is a bit annoying as you enter different areas in the software, how they try to get you to "upgrade" online, with veiled threats of what might happen if you don't take advantage of their support and the IRS finds an error. Another, is the need to buy a "full version" every year. Seems to me, once you buy TurboTax, you could pay a lower fee each year to upgrade to the next year's version. Finally, there are situations such as mine where I live in a state with no income tax, yet to get the version I need, there are only versions with the State Income Tax software included. If I bought a lesser capable version, it can be bought for several dollars less without a State form as an option. These are just annoying things I am reminded of every year when I buy what I need to do my taxes.TurboTax Premier Federal + E-file + State 2011 Overview

Quicken Deluxe 2010 ReviewI purchased Quicken 2010 Deluxe today from a retail store. I believe the official release date is tomorrow, but they had it in stock for sale, although it was hidden in a corner of the store with only a few copies, so not exactly a big promotion. I installed it in about 10 minutes on my Vista laptop without any issues. The installation process first removed my Quicken 2007 software, installed Quicken 2010, checked for updates over the internet, and then converted my Quicken 2007 data file. The entire process went very smoothly.
The interface in 2010 is slightly different from 2007, but mainly just different colors and slightly different graphic formats. Other than that, I've poked around just about every feature to look for something that this product does different from 2007 and could not find much of anything. The only convenient change that I have noticed so far is that when I back up my data, the data is now contained in one file, rather than having six different files associated with the same backup.
For the price,I guess it's good to know that my software is three years newer, and likely has been tested under Windows 7 so that I will be able to upgrade my operating system in the near future without any issues. However, this upgrade confirms that you really don't need to purchase a new version of Quicken every year. Once every three years was more than enough here, and unless Intuit comes up with some revolutionary new tricks for their software, I suspect the next time I will be writing about Quicken will be in 2013.Quicken Deluxe 2010 OverviewQuicken Deluxe 2010 gives you money management and budgeting tools to help you watch your spending and increase your savings.

H&R Block At Home Deluxe 2011 Win ReviewI've used H&R Block's tax software (formerly called TaxCut) every year since 1995. Several times when I saw a promotional deal I purchased both TaxCut and TurboTax to compare. I found that TurboTax did not do anything better than TaxCut while costing consistently more. In addition, I like the option of being able to file 5 free Federal e-files as I do taxes for other relatives who are less computer savvy.
H&R Block software also wins if compared to the free on-line options. I don't like using the on-line tax programs for two reasons (1) I don't want my financial data to be on someone's web site (2) free offers include the Federal tax only.
This year I used a digital download for the first time rather than a boxed version. I liked the security of having a physical CD in case I need to re-install on another computer several years down the road. But you are supposed to be able to download the software again to a different computer and when the boxed version was not available I went digital.
Downloading the software was easy, however during the install I got an error registering the software. When I started the software it immediately gave me a prompt to enter a key-code which (the prompt said) I should have received in the email after purchasing the software. The email I received from Amazon contained no such key-code. I had to call Amazon support and they told me that this information can be found following these steps
1) Log into Amazon
2) Select Your Account at the top right of the page
3) Select Games and Software downloads which is towards the bottom of the long page you see when you log in
4) Then under H&R software entry you will see the key-code that you need to enter to unlock the software
Once this was done the rest of the software functions well. In fact it looked more polished than in prior years. I always had minor display problems because I use large fonts and they never scaled quite right. This year everything displayed perfectly.
I read one review which mentioned a problem with seeing selection boxes. The problem there most likely caused by low screen resolution. Both Windows and Mac minimum requirement for screen resolution is 1024 x 768 pixels or higher. At a lower resolution, there will be problem with display such as not seeing selection boxes. Screen resolution can be changed on your control panel by change PC's display settings.
I did a preliminary tax return and below are my observations.
1. H&R Block starts the interview process with an annoying up-sell pitch, recommending an upgrade from Deluxe to Premium even when it is not necessary.
2. Copy and Paste from Interview screens is not possible. Sometimes I wish to do it for some issue as a reminder to myself. My solution is to do PrintScreen (using PrintScreen key). This generates an image of the screen, which I paste into paint or photo editing software which I can print or save for later.
3. I don't use the default location for the tax returns, as I want to my backup program to back up only the data not the software itself. The software does not initially remember this new location on startup, it tells me I have no returns. I needed to pick the return manually from the File menu, as it does remember recently used files. The third time I started the software, it finally knew the location of the tax return file.
4. Some forms (such as foreign tax credit over the limit to be directly on 1040) require entering data manually. This year the foreign tax credit form is some what automated, when you hit next button it takes you to the next place on the form you need to fill out (last your you were just presented the form to fill out on your own). This form is not that hard to do manually as this form does not change year to year.
5. I use large font option on my monitor display and in the past had display issues (some things were displayed on top of each other). This year all forms displayed properly with this option. This is the first time in all the years I've used H&R Block software that I have no complaint about the display and did not need to change my monitor settings just to do the tax preparation. Nice!
6. This package include 5 free Federal e-files. However, if you also need to file a state return and use H&R Block state software (purchased separately) in addition to this package, H&R Block charges $19.95 to e-file each state return. Of course, this charge can be avoided by printing the forms and mailing them in.
7. In prior years the package include DeductionPro software. This year, like last year, this software is only available as an online tool. I will not use software that requires me to put my financial data on their site, and DeductionPro wants to import the data to H&R web site, so I will not be using it. Disappointing.
8. The price on this package changes day to day. I found a nice tools that shows history of Amazon prices and allows you to generate an email alert when the price reaches our desired price range. If you enter "price history alert" in Google it will come up at the top, it has the word camel in the name. I find this tool very helpful.
I have been a H&R Block/TaxCut user for many years. The interview process is helpful in reminding you things you might have forgotten. On-line help is useful. 2011 H&R Block package appears more polished and has a number of improvements to a couple of small pet peeves I had in the past. So I am quite pleased with it and recommend it!
