QuickBooks Pro 2008 ReviewI'd like to say first off that the tech support for QuickBooks Pro is poor unless you get an American on the phone. I guess for a program that costs less than $200 you can't expect unlimited free tech support from US reps but it would be nice if you could get one on the phone once in a while or perhaps pay a little extra to speak to Americans only. We decided to pay the extra for QB Enterprise, not because we really needed it but because of the Tech support plans. It's amazing how good the Tech support is when your willing to shell out a couple thousand $$ and then agree to a $750 a year renewal fee. Still though, it's much cheaper than talking to my accountant and the Enterprise technical support is generally outstanding. They will go out of their way to make sure you have everything you could ever need. You still will sometimes get a goof ball if you call at odd hours and very occasionally when you call during normal hours in but for the most part everyone you speak to is located in the US.
The product itself had some problems back in 2006 when they released this new type of QuickBooks. We quickly because frustrated with hosting issues, slowness, having to install it on our server, errors logging into the file etc..
2008 however has been very good thus-far. It's not that big of an improvement although I do appreciate the fact that it integrates with Outlook. The new help system also seems to have a pretty big improvement. Some of the other complaints I've read seem mislead and/or petty...some of this is no doubt the poor technical support from India. For example, one person mentions that after 8 years they still can't import transactions. Sure you can! We've imported AR and AP transactions using import through iif. The tech support person we talked to sent us templates on how to get this done and while it's pretty clunky it gets the job done. Sometimes I can't get the "exact" report I want or I wish it did something a little better but the problem is that all businesses are different and it's impossible to have a program that will please everyone all the time.
The things QuickBooks does well FAR EXCEED what it doesn't do. It makes accounting incredibly easy for a business owner, reports are pretty darn flexible. If their not flexible enough for you, upgrade to the Enterprise Edition and you get a Read ODBC driver that allows you to Query the database using SQL and make all sort of fancy reports in Access and Crystal. The biggest strength to this program is it's ability to be a jack of all trades. In one of the reviews someone is complaining about having to use Excel with QuickBooks to get the report they want but that is such a small gripe. The fact is that QuickBooks has a feature that allows you to export to Excel and customize things to your liking if you don't like exactly how they've done it. That's a benefit not a downside! They have taken the time to integrate with other products so well which I think is one of this products biggest strengths.
The woman who has to rebuild her file repeatedly sounds like she has data damage in her file, something that has only happened to us once in 6 years and it was very minor. She also says she's getting a switch to message several hundred times? That's not normal. I've seen QuickBooks running on several hundred of my clients PCs without seeing that error. I can tell you from personal every day experience that the product runs fast if you take the time to set it up right, have decent computers (1-2gb of RAM is standard these days), and a decent server if your using a multi-user edition to hold the data file and take the "brunt" of the workload.
If you have an anti-virus program make sure to have it exclude the QuickBooks processes! We had an issue with our file giving strange errors when we would open it that were similar to the switch-to message. The file was also running unbearably slow for a couple weeks. I eventually started booting the computers in selective startup and was able to determine the Anti Virus was at fault. I excluded the QBW32.exe process and everything has worked great ever since.
The bottom line is that for users that already have 2006 or 2007, this is a small upgrade that's probably not worth it. I think most people like myself become spoiled over time from how easy this program really is to use and find ourselves frustrated when it doesn't do everything just perfect.
If your looking for an accounting package for the first time, this is the one to buy look no further. QuickBooks is supported by so many accountants that choosing another version of software in my opinion is a poor financial business move. Not only do you have to go out of your way to find an accountant that knows how to use Microsoft accounting or any of the other small Accounting packages but you may also have to pay a premium for their help because they are such a rarity.
This program is incredibly simple, offers just about everything you could ask for in reporting, 3rd party integration, emailing, creating sales and purchase transactions, taking care of your taxes, automatically sending your file to your accountant, I could go on for a while. Get it, it's the only accounting software I would recommend to anyone. If only they would offer their US support for less $ I would have given this 5 stars. 5 stars for the program, 1 star for Pro tech support, 5 stars for QuickBooks Enterprise tech support if you can afford it.QuickBooks Pro 2008 OverviewQuickbooks Pro 2008 retail SML PKG

QuickBooks Premier Contractor 2010 ReviewIf you are already using Quickbooks 2008 or higher, 2010 is not worth the upgrade. The only and I mean only reason I upgraded was because it claimed to offer the ability to attach files to customers, employees and vendors. Well, I have to say you can do that - IF you sign up for their on-line Document Management Service. It WILL NOT attach a file and keep it local. Which means you always have to have internet access to see your attached files. Also, the service is only free for the first 100 mb of files. After that, you start shelling out bucks. I know many operations use shared documents like this and I think it's a great option. However, why can't there also be an option to just use your local files? I am the only person that uses my Quickbooks and I have no need to see these files if I'm not on my laptop. When I looked at the product info on Intuit's website it says "Organize and back-up documents by attaching them to your QuickBooks records." It says nothing (not even in the disclaimer) that this is an on-line service only. The other issue is with Intuit itself. You have to call them to complete the product registration and they try to sell you more stuff. They also tried to tell me my current payroll service (which they automatically renewed) is no longer offered and I had to upgrade. Told them no and so far my current service is still in tact. I give this a 2 because of the misinformation and the features the product touts are not as useful as they appear in the product advertisement. I would recommend the upgrade from QB 2007 or earlier because 2008 came out with some great changes. But if you are on 2008, don't waste the money unless shared documents is your thing.QuickBooks Premier Contractor 2010 OverviewThe #1 small business financial management software, tailored for your industry to help make your business more profitable. QuickBooks Pro w/Enhanced Payroll 2011 - ReviewThese high star reviews are obviously from new subscribers to Intuit payroll service. Wait until they are forced to upgrade by Intuit at an astronomical price as see what their reviews are. I have QB Pro 2008 that I am being forced to update. The basic payroll subscription through Intuit is now $299.00. Thats for BASIC payroll through Intuit. Not only that, they have downgraded the features substantially for the SAME payroll service. At some point, we the consumers must say ENOUGH! They have obviously monopolized the market so that they can charge whatever they want. I will be searching for new alternatives. Intuit is NOT an honorable company. They are greedy.QuickBooks Pro w/Enhanced Payroll 2011 - Overview

Adobe Acrobat X Professional Student & Teacher Edition ReviewI upgraded from Acrobat Pro 7 to 10 last week. I am happy with some of the new features, and I find that the application's speed (for tasks like OCRing) is much improved. The user interface of Acrobat X Pro still looks like it was created for a PC, however, or in any case not for a Mac. The user experience is extremely clunky. Also, seemingly straightforward tasks -- for example, converting a color PDF to black-and-white in order to save space -- oddly seem beyond the capacity of the program. I am somewhat surprised, in short, that skipping two versions (8 and 9) to upgrade to 10 wasn't as big a deal as I expected. Maybe I am failing to understand the technical advances of this version, but Adobe certainly hasn't helped me to see the added benefit. On the other hand, this is still my program of choice for OCR processing and other forms of PDF file manipulation, like reducing file size or managing security. I am not involved in professional document production, so many of the program's production tools are irrelevant to me. On the plus side, I am pleased that Adobe sells this lower-priced academic version of the program.Adobe Acrobat X Professional Student & Teacher Edition Overview

TurboTax Home & Business Federal + e-File + State 2010 - Review[I purchased the download version TurboTax Home & Business Federal + e-File + State 2010 [Download], but as this is essentially the same product, I am reviewing it here, too]
I have been a Turbotax user for quite a while, and have definitely seen a progression in quality and features of the Turbotax product. I remember last year, there were some installation issues for some. Turbotax 2010 downloaded and installed on my Windows 7 64-bit quickly and without issue. After executing the program, it immediately downloaded some updates and I was ready to get to work.
As usual, the State software is included free. This year, the integration with the State software seems even better. While the State download wasn't available yet, it gave me options for notification and what the status of availability was.
There doesn't seem to be many new features over last year, in fact, as far as I can tell, they don't come right out and say what is new over last year. However, the ones that are there are very nice:
* The Live Community is integrated even more into the software and is a handy feature. It is context sensitive, so the most popular questions for each section appear when you enter that section.
* There is also a Flags section which allows you to easily mark sections to work on later, which has proven valuable when trying to complete forms for which you only have preliminary data.
* Switching between Forms and Interview seems to be smoother as well, and there seems to be several ways to navigate to exactly the data you want to work on.
* It seems to be all about options, for many areas, the software offers you multiple ways of calculating the data so that you get the best possible return.
* Finally, ItsDeductible is still integrated and is a great tool.
Tax software has a unique problem; the features are to provide the smoothest and fastest tax preparation as possible. So, the better they make the product, the less time I need to work with it.
I plan to update this review as I complete my personal/business returns.** UPDATE 12/28/2010 **
2010 figures are summarized side by side with (imported) 2009 figures, which is very helpful in identifying data that you might still need to enter.
I found that the set of guided questions about entering home office information misleading. Once a home office is added, you must click the Edit button to continue entering more information or else your entry will be incomplete, even though there is really no easy way to tell. That button should be a Start/Update button as found in other sections.
Yes, it is still preliminary, but on the Final Review section it does indeed provide a list of forms that haven't been finalized yet, and an expected due date for each. So you do have some idea of what calculations may change.TurboTax Home & Business Federal + e-File + State 2010 - Overview

Quicken 2004 Basic ReviewI've used Quicken since 1994 when I bought my first computer and Quick 2.0 came preinstalled. Since then I've tried MS-Money twice. I keep going back to Quicken. It's intuitive, logical and makes reconciling the check book a breeze. I admit that my finaces are fairly simple and others may need the deluxe or small business versions of the program, but I think for the average person the basic program is perfect. I don't upgrade every year. I don't think there's a need to. I up grade about every two to three years. The program is very stable. I haven't had problems with bugs or crashes in any version. I highly recommend it.Quicken 2004 Basic Overview

Adobe Acrobat X Standard ReviewLets face it; after two decades, Adobe is running out of ways to make documents seem exciting.
With Acrobat 10, there are three price tiers. Acrobat pro adds the ability to redact information, make forms and embed media files. Acrobat suite tries to vertically integrate Acrobat with technology from Adobe's other products (Flash, Premiere, and Photoshop) to provide an alternative to Powerpoint.
Here's what would excite me: If Adobe took the time to rewrite Acrobat from the bottom up as a 64-bit application. I am running Acrobat on Windows 7 64-bit and it still uses antiquated 32-bit code.
I would also be excited if Adobe added serious multi-threading support since most of today's computers have two, four, six and even more processor cores.
Adobe definitely has not skimped on heavy-handed Digital Rights Management -- the buzzword for its effort to keep you from stealing this software. Adobe runs its Windows background software even when you aren't running Acrobat. The software phones-home any hardware anomalies or license-key issues that might arouse suspicion.
In the past, Acrobat has been accused of being "bloatware"--software that is overly elaborate and innefficient in completing simple tasks. This can be inevitable when you have these giant applications with very long development cycles and inevatible staff turnover.
Acrobat still has the "feel" of being "code-by-committee." In making each new version, the marketers tell the developers the feature-sets they want. Those features get tacked-on. That spark of true innovation and daring originality that defines the startup-phase of a new idea is lost in bureaucracy. Bloatware happens when programming stops being art and stops being invention; Acrobat is long-decended down that slippery slope.
The consequence of aggressive Digital Rights Management and Bloatware is more compatibility problems -- I personally had a dramatic compability problem that caused my mostly-clean Windows 7 install to hang while booting after installing this software. I'll give Adobe the benefit-of-the-doubt and hope I was a rare exception.
If you intend to use this software for exactly the same things you would have used it for in 1999 -- and you are lucky enough to not fall on the wrong side of Adobe's DRM or compatibility issues -- it will work just fine. You can scan documents, merge documents, recognize text and all the great things you were able to do when Desktop PCs seemed as new as iPads.
Here's hoping that Adobe uses Acrobat XI to surprise us with something daring, bare, efficient, inventive, fast and thrilling. For now, Acrobat X is more of a General Motors minivan (and about as reliable) than it is a Corvette.Adobe Acrobat X Standard OverviewAcrobat X Standard -- B0046DMZH8

Sage Peachtree Complete Accounting 2011 ReviewI've been using various versions of this software since 1999 and generally upgrade every 2 or 3 years. I hadn't planned an upgrade but did so to better accommodate an upgrade from XP Win 7 (Win 7 is worth the trouble and expense!) When the disk arrived, it was cracked (shipping problem, not Peachtree.) I had next to no trouble getting them to give me a link to a download so I could use the product without waiting for a new disk. I had no trouble with the download and no problem moving files from Peachtree Complete 2008. I moved four companies and everything works very well. The employees (two) were easy to understand and registration was a snap. A MAJOR benefit to me is being able to keep multiple companies open at the same time. As usual, the best price and service were at Amazon. This review sounds like it was written by an employee but it wasn't--it's just a bullet-proof product that performs very well and performs flawlessly with Win 7--worth the price.Sage Peachtree Complete Accounting 2011 OverviewSage Peachtree Complete Accounting 2011 helps you work more easily and efficiently with robust core accounting and added features like job costing, time and billing, in-depth inventory capabilities, and analysis tools. QuickBooks Premier Industry Editions 2010 ReviewI've used Quickbooks and their payroll service for the last five years or so with my small business. Yesterday I upgraded from 2007 to this 2010 Premier version. Not because I needed any new functionality, but because their payroll service no longer supports 2007. I guess I understand that - they can't support old code forever.
Unfortunately, the Quickbooks product line seems to be going quickly downhill. I very much resented having to pay for an upgrade with new features that only work if I pay intuit more. Intuit makes a fine corporate example of how to annoy your current customer base and drive them away.
After downloading the software from Amazon, I had to fill out an Intuit survey about my company to register it. After filling out the survey, you have to call a toll-free number to an India-based support desk where they ask you the SAME questions. I've done this a couple of times with my 2007 version and today with 2010 - each time I am told the computer system is running slow, and while they are waiting for my registration confirmation, would it be OK if they chat with me about my company? This is a thinly veiled attempt to sell you more services from Intuit that becomes more and more pushy as you decline - and I think this sales opportunity is the real reason you can't just register over the internet like every other modern piece of software.
The best features that have been added in the last few years have been crippled by the requirement that they be based on Intuit's additional services. For instance, I run a paperless company. We scan all receipts, invoices, etc and store them digitally. One of the new 2010 features is the ability to link that document to your quickbook entries...but only if you store the document on Intuit's servers! Why would I trust and pay intuit to hold all my critical and sensitive information when I have that problem solved using a local server that I invested heavily into? Why can't I use, other, more trusted cloud storage vendors such as Amazon? Same thing with improvements to the time tracking software. If you don't use the web version with a monthly fee, be prepared to use a crummy interface that intuit mostly abandoned years ago.
Finally, the software STILL feels like it's stuck in the windows 3.1 world. I can't, for instance, open two invoices side by side to compare them onscreen - you can only have one invoice open at a time. That's something we need to do all the time. It seems clear that from 2007 to 2010, features don't get added unless it profits Intuit. Usability issues don't get addressed.
My recommendation is that if you have not invested in a financial package for your company, you look at Peachtree or one of the other competitors. If you have to upgrade to avoid the pain of migrating your financials to another package, you have my condolences. I'll be positioning my company in the next year or two to move away from Quickbooks. This service space is ripe for someone to step in, treat customers better and eat Intuit's lunch.QuickBooks Premier Industry Editions 2010 OverviewThe #1 small business financial management software, tailored for your industry to help make your business more profitable. Quicken Home & Business 2011 - ReviewI was not a beta tester and was not "encouraged" to write a glowing review by Intuit. This review only speaks to the question of whether this is a worthwhile upgrade from the 2010 version. The 2011 version contains very few new features when compared to the 2010 version. Whether you find these new features worth the upgrade price is debatable. The quicken site is a bit misleading in their "new features" list since many of the items they mention were already in the 2010 version. As with past Quicken upgrades, they largely give you MORE of a existing feature, and not much in the way of new features. So, for example, MORE banks are supported for direct connect. MORE transactions can be automatically categorized since auto-categorization already existed. So in these cases, if your banks are already supported and you don't use auto-categorization, then these enhancements are irrelevant. So for those thinking of upgrading from 2010, here's the list of only NEW features in the 2011 version:
- All Transactions register: This could be handy if you use many accounts and want to enter, maintain and view your transactions in one place. However, if you download transactions from your banking and investment institutions, the download window does not show up when you are in this mode, so you will be forced to continue using the individual account registers anyway.
- Register customization: You can decide which columns appear in each individual register. Transaction Notes can now be shown/edited as a column instead of treating them like an attachment.
- Attachment Encryption: I'm fairly certain this wasn't in the prior version. I guess you can now password protect attachments.
- The usual "Where's Waldo" changes to the program: They've moved menu items and eliminated speed button lists in registers. I imagine they did this to make the interface "look" simpler/cleaner, but now you have to rummage through the menus to find them. So, for example, the "Live Community" speed button was eliminated; It is now found as a "Help" menu item. Also, each account's "Overview" speed button has been eliminated; You now find that in the "Account Actions" menu. Since it is likely that the eliminated speed buttons were rarely needed by most users, the changes will be well received. That's it! Is it worth the upgrade? You decide.

TurboTax Home & Business Federal + E-file + State 2011 ReviewI have been using Turbo Tax for about 10 years. In general it is an easy to use program and I have never been audited. I only enter legitimate data that I have a receipt for. If I was to be audited it wouldn't be a big deal.
6 years ago I had gone through the process of filling out all my forms but neglected to save the data prior to entering the E file area of the program. When I saw the state fee for E file, I tried to back out of the E file program section. All of my data prior to my last save was lost. This was about 6 hours of work. I know it was my fault for not saving my data, but I thought that the E file was included in the price of the program. I felt the program should require you to save the data prior to entering a section where the data would be lost if you backed out of the E file section. I called Intuit to let them know what happened and found the response to my issue underwhelming.
The Federal E file is free but the states may charge additional fee of about $20 to E file.
The next year I used an accountant which turned out to be a big mistake. It cost several times the price of the software package and all of my carryover deductions needed to be manually entered. I spent more time putting my information together for the accountant than I had spent in previous years doing the return myself. The accountant just made the deadline and repeatedly called asking for clarifications on deductions.
I learned my lesson from that experience. Now I always use Turbo Tax Home and Business but make sure I save my data throughout the entry process.
I'd give the product 4.5 stars if I could. I find the statement of E file to be slightly deceptive. The state filing is not included in the price the program. Intuit is much clearer about this now than they use to be. You just need to be aware of this and include that cost in your purchase decision. I print and file my state return to avoid the fee. There are also areas of the business deductions that require research from the IRS's website which can be tedious.
The program allows business deductions carry over to future years which save a lot of time and helps maintain accuracy. If you are going to use this program it pays to be a repeat user.

Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional Upgrade from Professional Version 6 ReviewDon't take my word for it that's a quote from the title of a recent post excoriating this irritating and increasingly bloated product on Slashdot.
Be warned: Adobe has not learned its lesson, and despite the outcry that followed the release of version 6, this latest release of Acrobat continues Adobe's aggressive trend of intruding into your desktop environment, again, as in version 6 without providing an easy way to undo the damage once its done--in fact, it's now nearly impossible. Like earlier releases, this version of Acrobat adds startup macros and new toolbar buttons to your existing applications and adds menu entries to your desktop "right click" menus. Adobe argues that these are conveniences, but they are entirely unnecessary (for most of us "printing" to Adobe PDF achieves the same result, is much more convenient, and a more natural model), and clutter what for most users is either a too-crowded user interface (for those who don't have the knowledge or patience to customize it) or a carefully tuned one (for those who do). Unlike many well-behaved applications that provide obvious ways of avoiding this kind of intrusive and disruptive behavior (e.g. through a simple checkbox option in a settings dialog), Acrobat's "option" for disabling this behavior, once deeply hidden in the setup process,is now almost completely absent. To disable the "Convert to Adobe PDF" button that mysteriously appears in the Outlook mail editor, for example, one has to be sure to choose "this feature will not be available" from the "Microsoft Outlook" option under "Acrobat PDFMaker" under "Create Adobe PDF". Simply deleting the button using Outlook's toolbar customization feature will not work: it comes right back when the editor is next opened. Similar problems arise in Word, Excel, Visio, Project, and Internet Explorer. And there's simply no way to get rid of the never-used "Convert to Adobe PDF" and "Combine in Acrobat..." entries in that appear in the desktop context menus for files (even if one installs none of the Acrobat PDFMaker features).
For the technically inclined wishing to repair some of the damage that Acrobat 7 does, there are complex but largely effective step by step instructions available on the web, but even the authors of these are driven to despair by version 7: ("Adobe has really pushed the boat out with Acrobat 7 and managed to screw Word royally") .
In short, Acrobat will make a mess of your working environment, there's no way to completely fix it, and even the partial fix is a pain (and not well documented). (This may seem a minor issue, but if every application followed Adobe's reckless example, our working environments would start to look like strip malls, crowded with features screaming for our attention to the point where it is hard to find what we need when we need it. One of the great strengths of the personal computer desktop is that users can configure it in ways that suit their needs; no application should interfere with that.)
Experienced Acrobat users will also notice that this version continues another frustrating trend for Acrobat (and most other Adobe applications): it is yet again slower to launch than the previous version. In fact, on my 2 GHz Pentium 4, it takes longer to launch than the entire Visual Studio .NET development environment, and longer than the boot sequence for Windows XP!
There are other minor problems as well (arbitrary rearrangements of menu and tool bar items, etc.) but these two major flaws are more than bad enough. Unless you really need the latest Acrobat features, you should probably avoid this upgrade. And if the "improvements" in this release are any indication of where Adobe plans to go with future releases, it may be time to start looking elsewhere for a tool for digital document management.
Fortunately, there's no reason at all to upgrade. Version 7 offers no usefully new features, so you can (and should) avoid this one (at all costs).Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional Upgrade from Professional Version 6 OverviewAdobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional software is the advanced way to create, control, and deliver more secure, high-quality Adobe PDF documents. Assemble electronic or paper files—even Web sites, engineering drawings, and e-mail—into reliable PDF documents that are easy to share with others using free Adobe Reader 7.0 software. Manage document reviews, synthesizing feedback from multiple reviewers while preserving document format and integrity. Extend commenting capabilities to anyone using Adobe Reader 7.0 and design intelligent Adobe PDF forms that include business logic, such as calculations and data validations, to help increase the accuracy of data collection while reducing the costs of manual data entry.

Anytime Organizer Deluxe 12 ReviewI have recently downloaded the Anytime Organizer Deluxe 12 from Amazon. After having used it for awhile, I can say that it does everything that it is suppose to do and appears to be stable. I know from reading the reviews of the CD-ROM version and previous versions that many users have been frustrated by bugs and installation issues. I can report that so far I have had no problems. This is part of the reason why I chose to download it from Amazon instead of purchasing a hard copy; I felt that I was likely to get the most current version with the bugs worked out (that, and it's significantly cheaper). I would strongly recommend updating the program when you first run it.
Having upgraded to Windows 7, I could no longer use my older version of Outlook and needed an affordable alternative that would keep my schedules, contacts, to do lists, notes and the like and sync it all with my Pocket PC. (There are many syncing options to choose from when installing for the first time, such as Pocket PC, Palm, various phones, etc.) The Organizer has many options when syncing that allow me to manage exactly what I need to have between my calender and PDA. Having decided to give version 12 a try, I'm glad I did. I find it to be full-featured and easy to use. Once I got the hang of the interface, I believe I actually like this better than Outlook. Of course, it's simpler in many ways but that's a plus for me. Tasks like making re-occuring appointments and adding new catagories are very easy. It has many nice features like an expense record, daily journal entry, schedule ticker, password organizer, and the ability to print info in various page formats. Also, something that I did not expect, If I want to send an email from the contacts screen all I have to do is click on the contact and then the email button, and it automatically opens up my email program and selects a new message to the chosen contact. That may not seem like much to some, but for me that's a multi-step process that I no longer have to go through.
As with anything, there are some things I would like to see it do better. It doesn't always read appointment info and times correctly from the PDA and I often have to manually correct some data. The interface screens are a little simplistic looking and doesn't have the sharp professional look that Outlook has. Things like that.
All in all, I am very pleased to be able to sync my schedule and contact info with my PDA again and to have an integrated desktop scheduling system that meets my needs. All for a very affordable price. I'm happy.Anytime Organizer Deluxe 12 Overview

Adobe Acrobat X Professional Student & Teacher Edition ReviewVerification is never fun, but I really believe Adobe's verification process is as easy as it could possibly be.
I recently purchased the Student and Teacher Editions (academic versions) of Adobe Dreamweaver CS5, Photoshop CS5 Extended and Acrobat X Professional.
The entire verification process is very easy and it helps to have your scanned ID or any additional paperwork ready ahead of time. I received all three activation serial numbers in less than 24 hours. Adobe says that it could take up to two business days for verification.
The following might be some helpful information:
Adobe allows you to install and activate your purchased software onto two computers. I have the above-mentioned software installed and activated on two computers on a home network. I am able to 'run' Dreamweaver, Photoshop or Acrobat on both computers at the same time without any licensing problems.
To install and activate your Adobe software on a third computer, you must first 'de-activate' the software on one of the other two computers. Make sure if you ever throw out or give away an old computer, that you first de-activate the Adobe software. Otherwise, you will lose one of your two activations.
After installing and activating, you can then register your software and receive a free gift from Adobe. The gifts vary for each software title. Some of the gifts are AdobeTextPro Font, Photoshop plugins, discounts on Adobe software and 30-day access to training videos on either Lynda.com or CreativeEdge.com. Lynda.com has an amazing amount of training videos. You may want to check out these two websites before registering so you have time to evaluate them.
Concerning future upgrades of Adobe academic software, here is a quote from Adobe's website:
"Upgrades don't have special education pricing. However, you can purchase upgrades for educational products at the regular upgrade prices from any Authorized Education Reseller."
So according to Adobe, you can upgrade your academic software for their standard (non-academic) software if or when you no longer have student or teacher status. That is a really good deal! Many software companies won't allow you to upgrade academic software.
If you are not a student or teacher and you want to purchase academic software, you may want to consider signing up for an interesting class at your local community college. You could then get your student ID and your student status. You don't need to be a full-time student and you don't need to be seeking a degree. Maybe you can find a convenient on-line class. You can then go to a website like JourneyEd and be eligible to purchase all kinds of academic software and hardware.
Also, Microsoft has a program called DreamSpark that allows students to download full-versions of their software for free. You need to first sign up for a Windows Live ID and then sign in and get verified on the Microsoft DreamSpark website. Microsoft uses your college-issued '.edu' email address for verification. During the verification process Microsoft sends an activation email to your .edu email address. You must log in to your .edu email account and click on an activation link within the activation email. My verification didn't go very smoothly as my college had blacklisted Microsoft's mail servers and wouldn't allow me to receive the activation email from DreamSpark. I was eventually verified 'manually' by Microsoft tech support. I had to email them a copy of my scanned school ID and a copy of my class schedule.
After you are verified, Microsoft will verify your student status once a year. You can download all of the software that they have available on their DreamSpark.com website. There are no time limits on the software. You can continue to use their software after your student status expires. After being recently verified, I downloaded the full version of MS Visual Studio 2010 Professional, another very expensive program that was completely free.
With that valuable student ID, you really can save many hundreds of dollars on academic software, hardware and training!Adobe Acrobat X Professional Student & Teacher Edition Overview

Microsoft Publisher 2010 ReviewI originally wrote this up on Amazon.ca a few days ago and thought that, since most readers would not go to the Canadian site, this review would be helpful posted here for a larger audience.
After spending approximately 40 hours working in the 2010 version of the program (we have been using this product since the 2003 version), here are my initial observations:
PROS
1. It is definitely more stable and it is more integrated into the Office suite
2. It has lots of little additions that make using it much easier - for example, it has no problems with a bilingual document and switches keyboard, language and speller seamlessly. Changing pictures is a snap and you can link an Excel table to Publisher - change numbers in Excel and when you open Publisher, it updates your Excel tables. Excellent.
3, It is much easier to use than a real publishing solution such as InDesign, which has a really steep learning curve and costs about $1K more per license. If you know Word, you can use this product. Everyone in your business can use Publisher, while very few will have the knowledge to use a professional desktop publishing software solution such as InDesign by Adobe. This is a really big advantage from both a cost and time perspective.
4. The learning curve is very low, especially if you are already familiar with the Ribbon.
5. Contrary to popular belief and snickering on the part of printing houses and so-called experts, Publisher does a very good job at creating documents for printing at a professional printing house - it has Pantone and CMYK built into it and an excellent commercial printing wizard - our documents are of the quality of, for example, The Missing Manual series, using full colour. Some of our printers cannot believe that our documents were created in Publisher.
6. If you need to make a lot of changes to a document to satisfy clients, Publisher makes it really easy - but it is flawed, some basic automated functions do not exist. Your alternative is to do everything in a competing product like InDesign.
7. Publisher is very affordable compared to InDesign and if you are prepared to invest your sweat and time into manually manipulating each page, it probably is a very good solution (see the Cons about automation however).
CONS
1. It still is NOT a real desktop solution. You need to write all of your documentation in Word first, then design your template and move everything from Word to Publisher. Trying to import a Word document with pictures, tables etc. is a nightmare (believe me on this one). Write your text in Word and import it, but add your tables, pictures etc directly from within Publisher. This tip alone is worth money in terms of saved time and frustration - donations are, of course, accepted :-).
2. The help files are completely and totally useless - there is no detailed information on all of the features (SHAME ON YOU MICROSOFT). I have to use Word help files to get information on using specific elements of Styles for example - fortunately, if you know Word, many of the functions are the same. I sometimes use a Word reference manual to find more information on a Publisher function - wow!
3. You can see literally that Microsoft is still not really supporting this product - with the dearth of comprehensive help files, it feels still like an orphan and it still seems to be oriented towards greeting cards and newsletters and very short documents (think twice about writing a training manual of 200 pages for example, it is really time consuming - as some basic automated functions do not exist and you need to do each page manually). Too bad, the product merits more attention as it is a very complimentary extension of Office.
4. Lacks automation - this is a very serious drawback. Publisher 2010 lacks some really basic functions - for example, it cannot create a table of contents, although it offers some table of content templates that you can fill in manually. Importing a table of contents from Word will save a bit of time, but you still have to manually type in the page numbers in the table of contents if you change anything -which means that if you add in some pages, you need to manually enter the changes such as new titles and page numbering, into the Table of Contents and redo all of the numbering manually - ouch! Very time consuming and creates the conditions for errors slipping in with page numbers, table references etc.
5. Because of the lack of automation, you need Word to make this product shine but, importing from Word is very time consuming. Sometimes, when updating a manual, we simply do the changes in Word and re-import what we change (like a table of contents) ... but if you have a lot of changes throughout a document and not just the Table of Contents, then you are better off simply starting a NEW publisher file using the custom template you created AND, just so you know, importing is very problematic and time consuming as Publisher dumps everything into a single text box when it imports (it chains the text boxes onto other pages to accommodate your content). It does NOT convert your Word template into a Publisher template.
6. Publisher still seems oriented towards very SHORT documents, say 20 pages or so. For example, automated page numbering is still basic and this is not acceptable - you can only place automated page numbering in the headers or footers, you cannot place them halfway down the page for example, as many textbooks or manuals use today, unless you are prepared to manually enter the numbers yourself. You CANNOT generate a Table of Figures or a Table of Pictures or an Index - it needs to be done manually, just like the Table of Contents. By the way Microsoft, you are not serious about this product when I see basic functions like these still unavailable in Publisher (see Con item number 4 above). I had such high hopes that this functionality would be added - but alas this is still a crippled product.
7. Oh yes, you cannot merge two or more documents - you need to follow an obscure and intimidating process that someone created in a user forum - it works, but it is scary and you should not have to be forced to do this. Why is this is a problem? Well, Publisher can only handle documents up to about 100 pages or it freezes or does not load, so you need to divide longer documents and then merge them by converting everything to PDF and using Adobe pro or similar software to merge your PDF files. This is what we have been doing for the past several years - it works very well, but you should be able to merge two or three documents that are less than 100 pages, right?
8. The master pages function is still really flaky and un-intuative. I have yet to figure out how to copy master pages from one document to another in 2010 - and before criticizing me on this, I can tell you from experience that the "switching template" function within Publisher 2010, for example a document submitted by another user using a generic Publisher Template, does NOT work with complex customized templates, it only works with simple templates.
9. You can send your content and template to a professional designer who can convert your file to an InDesign or Quark document with a special add-in (interesting that this exists for designers who pay for this add-in; this means that there are a lot of small companies like us that use Publisher primarily for desktop publishing - ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION MICROSOFT?) - however, you CANNOT take your designer's content and convert to Publisher (you have to manually created a template, or master page, within Publisher). This is a real pain as you then become totally reliant on your designer (we use one as a sub-contractor) to make changes using InDesign and this is very expensive and frustrating for them and for you. You can send them your Publisher files but they cannot return the favour basically. So, for some of our documents, we are stuck with outsourcing or rewriting in Word and then going through the entirely un-automated process of importing the Word document (as noted earlier, everything dumps into a text-box which expands onto multiple pages for a long document - you then hope that you do not have too much manipulation).
10. Lastly, and maybe fatally for the future of the product and its attractiveness, there are no really comprehensive third-party support reference books out there - there is no Wiley, or O'Reilly or even Microsoft Inside-Out reference manuals - you really are on your own and have to rely on user forums for help.
We still find Publisher useful enough that we continue to use it in our small business but Microsoft still does not seem to take this product very seriously, at least from what we perceive. Like I noted earlier, this is really too bad because the product has so much potential.Microsoft Publisher 2010 OverviewWith Publisher 2010, you can easily communicate your message in a variety of publication types, saving you time and money.
