PDF Converter Pro 6.0 ReviewI have used PDF Professional 4 for years with full satisfaction. While it took forever to load, it was great for saving and editing PDF files, much cheaper and better than Acrobat, and with no bugs. I recommended it with enthusiasm to everyone who would listen.
Hoping to get faster loads, I paid for PDF Prof 6 and have regretted it ever since. It does load faster. But unpredictably, it refuses to open PDF files that Acrobat 8 handles just fine. PDF 6 tells me the "file cannot be repaired" but it was PDF Prof 6 itself that damaged the file so that neither PDF Prof 6 nor Acrobat 8 can open it. But on my other computer that doesn't have PDF Prof 6, Acrobat opens it just fine.
Additionally, PDF Prof 6 will unpredictably report "Access Denied" to an HTM file I try to print to PDF, although it prints to my printer just fine.
Nuance has acknowledged receipt of my incident reports but provided no substantive help.

Wordperfect Office X4 Standard Upgrade ReviewI'm a Mac person, but I have Windows XP on my iMac (had Vista, made the switch back, but that's another story), so installing WordPerfect was no problem. It installed quickly and with just a couple clicks I had a document open in Unity Mode on my computer. Using Fusion, one can completely hide XP, so it seems as if Windows programs are running natively on the Mac. It's important for me to say this, because I am, after all, running Windows in emulation. But tell it to WordPerfect. It's jack rabbit quick on my Mac.
I compared it to Nisus Writer, the premiere made for Mac only Word Processor and speed wise to my eyes, WordPerfect was every bit as quick. Compared it to Word for the Mac, just as fast. Even a Mac guy could live with this program. Printing, you get exactly what you see when you have your document open in Page Mode. The spell checker is as nifty as they come. The word you're currently typing appears in a little box in a ribbon at the top (if you have it open), so you know instantly if you've misspelled a word, because not only is it underlined in read (if you have that feature activated,) but it's in red in that little box, click the drop down menu and you'll usually find the correct spelling. Very cool, very fast.
I didn't like the word count at the bottom of the document. It's not live. You have to click on it to get your count, both Word and Nisus Writer have live word counts and that's kind of neat. That said, that is the only feature I'm not happy with. My only other problem is how the text looks on screen. If you're a Window's person you'll be happy with it, but text on Macs just looks better.
Still, I'll keep the program, because I just kind of like it. It's got a refreshing interface, clean -- and also because years ago I used to use WordPerfect for the Mac exclusively, but Apple changed chips and WordPerfect abandoned the platform, so now it seems like an old friend has come home, even though he really hasn't. Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 Student & Teacher Edition ReviewBe aware that if you make the mistake of buying this edition of this company's software you will be put through a real hassle by some company called Ident-e that will want everything but your grandmother's birth certificate and a note from your teacher to verify that you are actually a student or teacher. Unlike the more straight forward methods used by Microsoft and others they require picture ID's, which can be difficult if your course is online, fee bills, etc. They are also unresponsive, taking 48 hours or more to answer queries. The kicker is that after 30 days they threaten to refuse to activate the software at all and you cannot get a refund. Welcome to Adobe.
I bought this overpriced software because the University of South Alabama convinced my wife, who is attending a grad course, that she needed Acrobat to submit her documents. I know that you can use free programs, like PDF Creator, and alternate software like PDF Factory and numerous other pdf suites that are both cheaper and more flexible than Acrobat. I use those myself but in the interest of my wife's confidence in her system I decided to spend the extra bucks and buy this version, for which she certainly qualifies. I regret that decision and will never again do any business with or recommend any Adobe product to anyone. This is one disgusting and arrogant bunch to deal with.
I am still waiting for the response and serial number for the software I paid them for and will update this as needed.
BTW: They needed no verification to charge my card. Adobe Acrobat Professional 9 Upgrade from Acrobat Pro ReviewA friend of mine from work asked me why his PDFed document looked so bad. I asked him what version of Acrobat he was using and he answered that he was using some freeware program. That was his problem. He e-mailed me his document and I PDFed it through my Adobe Actobat 9 product and the product was marvelous.
I can't say enoough great things about this product. It integrates with (on my computer):
- MS Word 2007
- MS Excel 2007
- MS Visio
- MS Project
- Explorer 8
Runs on Windows 7 and Integrates natively with my Adobe Illustrator CS4 and Photoshop CS4.
There are a lot of customizable functions in the product that allows you to create different quality PDFs and an ability to merge different PDFs into one PDF document. You can create forms too and send documents out for revisions from your users.
Is the product perfect? No. I must say that I've had problems with the Update feature from Adobe. Once, I had to reinstall my entire operating system to get it to work: that was a real bummer and I seriously urge Adobe to fix those problems with their updater programs.
However the product itself is great. In my opinion, accept no substitutes. Use Adobe Acrobat. It's the standard.

- If you're going to Windows 7 -- YES, Acrobat 7 won't work with Windows 7
- If you're running any CS4 product -- YES, the updater issues alone are enough to upgrade

Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended ReviewAdobe Acrobat 9 comes in three versions: Standard, Pro and Pro Extended. I've been using the Standard version for about a year and have been very pleased with it (I reviewed the Standard version a while back). The Pro Extended does everything the Standard and Pro versions do, but adds in several new features, most notably the ability to "wrap" a variety of formats, including video, into a PDF.
So why would you want to do this? Basically it makes distributing multimedia files much easier. As an example, I had a bunch of real estate info including photos, documents, and a movie file that I wanted to distribute. Rather than send all the info in different formats and hope that the person who wanted to see them had all the right plug-ins, I used Pro Extended to convert all the files into PDF format, then created a PDF portfolio that encompassed all the parts. Now, all the end-user needs to view all the content is the Acrobat Reader version 9. Simple to use and the PDF portfolio looks fantastic! There are a variety of templates you can select that make the final product look very professional.
You can do the same type of packaging with PowerPoint files to add video and audio, and distribute it as a package that the end-user can view with just the Reader. Pretty straightforward to do, but you have to use PowerPoint 2007 - does not seem to work with older versions. It also has the ability to work with maps, geospacial data, and CAD files (I don't use those so I didn't try it out).
I spend a lot of time working with Acrobat forms to collect research data. The Standard version handles the basics - you can create a static form (also called an AcroForm), put in logic, scripts, etc. The Pro and Pro Extended versions allow you to use LiveCycle Designer to offer flexible forms that are far more interactive. Rather steep learning curve, but I'm getting the hang of it. Really powerful capabilities that allow you to bind data to fields and create a form that adapts to the users' needs.
As with many Adobe products, this is complex to use. I've been using Acrobat since version 5, so the basics of creating and manipulating PDFs was not a problem - there are more choices, but the workflow is basically the same. Using some of the new features, such as converting a MOV file to a PDF, was pretty straightforward. It also allows you to clip just the portions of the video you want to use very easily - I just followed the prompts. But, to get the most out of the package I'll be buying either a book or perhaps signing up for a class. Adobe offers a lot of education that is excellent, but also pretty pricy. My complaint with this, as with all other Adobe products, is that I think the company should offer some type of manual or book when you purchase the product. There are webinars offered at no charge, but a manual would be nice given the product price.
This version of Acrobat is highly specialized and not for everyone. If you just want to create a PDF from a Word or Excel document, or mark up/edit a PDF, you can get by very well with a third party PDF creator. This is intended for more intensive (mainly business) needs. For example, those in legal offices will appreciate the ability in the Pro versions to permanently redact info from a PDF.
Also, keep in mind that the Standard version of Acrobat 9 is pretty capable - it will handle all the basics (including form creation) at about one-third of the price of the Pro Extended version. There is a matrix at the Adobe site that compares the three version. Be sure to check that out before you purchase anything to see if the features you want to use are available in the cheaper versions.
No compatibility or install issues. I'm running this under XP with SP3, 2GB RAM, Core2 Duo at 3GHz. Good performance for everything other than video work, which bogged me down a bit. Paperport Professional 14.0 ReviewI have used PaperPort forever, ever since Ver. 1. Always the sucker for "New and Improved" I took the half-price-for-the-upgrade bait...again, and downloaded Ver. 14, upgrading from 12.1. (Were they too superstitious to put out Ver. 13?)
With Ver.14 there are a few additions and a few alleged improvements. What hasn't changed is the installation. Why in 2011, after 13 iterations of the program, does it still have to uninstall itself before installing the newer version, especially when it seems to be mostly the same? It also takes all your settings with it, so you have to totally configure the program after installation. This includes changing the PDF Rendering Resolution under Options/Advanced from 200 dpi to at least 300. Otherwise the OCR accuracy will suffer. None of this is hard, but kind of a PITA. Oddly, it leaves the PaperPort Image Printer alone.
Overall it seems more like an upgrade than a new version, but it seems to work the same as Ver. 12.1, which is mostly good. It does seem to be faster, and all of the features I've tried seem to work. The icons for the Quick Access Toolbar are still too small. PDF Viewer Plus seems vastly improved over the dog included with V12. While the Highlight feature doesn't work, everything else seems to, and it no longer crashes when you try to put in a text box.
The program now only saves to pdf format. Saving an item in the old .max format is no longer an option. It will read a .max document, but to edit, copy, or annotate a .max item you must first duplicate it as a pdf.
One interface quirk they haven't fixed: In Win XP, if you have the Windows Task Bar on the left side of the screen and select Scenic, Win XP, or Visual Studio Desktop themes the following will happen: When you open PP you will get a gap on the left side of the screen between the task bar and the PP program window equal to the width of the task bar. The program window will be shifted to the right by that amount. The wider the task bar the wider the gap. If you shrink the window (double click on the title bar) and maximize it it will fit the window properly. This also happens if the Task Bar is on the top of the screen, but not if it is on the right or the bottom. It does not happen with any of the other five themes.
I don't expect to use the PaperPort Anywhere feature. I will update this review as I discover improvements or bugs, but so far it looks like a keeper.

I am downgrading my review from 4 stars to three. I just installed Windows 7 SP1. PP14 works pretty well, but...When I try to print using the PP Image Printer the dialog comes up, it says "Printing Document," the print icon shows up in the system tray, and nothing happens. Adobe Acrobat 5.0 is Windows XP ready ReviewVersion 5 has features I dreamed about in 3.0 and 4.0, but despaired of ever seeing. Adobe made my dreams come true. Here are the highlights that make this an essential tool if you work with PDF files or transform other documents into PDF format: You can now save files in rich text format (RTF), which can be directly opened and edited in Microsoft Word (and other applications). I was able to do this in version 4 with an expensive third-party plug-in that did not always produce the results I was looking for. Version 5 does not need the plug-in and does a much better job.
Two other features that I love are the ability to extract images from a PDF file and save them as Tiff, JPEG or PNG graphics. This is really powerful. A nice touch is the user interface, which now makes Acrobat's tool bars look like those in Microsoft Office applications. I thought this was a quantum improvement over the confusing interface in previous versions.
Adobe touts added security features in this version, but the only thing I found different is the 128-bit encryption. Version 4 gave me total control over protecting documents from alteration, selecting and copying text and printing. As a consultant I sometimes need to provide clients with intellectual property that I need to protect, and the features that I enjoyed in version 4 have been fully carried over in this version. Another nice feature that has been carried over from the previous version is the ability to open a web page from within Acrobat and save it as a PDF file. I have grabbed many pages from many sites for off-line reading using this feature and it still works without a problem in version 5.
Other features that are interesting, but I have not tried, include the ability to create and publish dynamic forms online, and support for XML form data. When I get time I plan to play around with creating and publishing the dynamic forms because I can think of a dozen uses on my web site.
Overall this is a solid product that did not cause me the same pain I endured when I moved from version 3 to 4. Adobe Acrobat X Standard ReviewLets face it; after two decades, Adobe is running out of ways to make documents seem exciting.
With Acrobat 10, there are three price tiers. Acrobat pro adds the ability to redact information, make forms and embed media files. Acrobat suite tries to vertically integrate Acrobat with technology from Adobe's other products (Flash, Premiere, and Photoshop) to provide an alternative to Powerpoint.
Here's what would excite me: If Adobe took the time to rewrite Acrobat from the bottom up as a 64-bit application. I am running Acrobat on Windows 7 64-bit and it still uses antiquated 32-bit code.
I would also be excited if Adobe added serious multi-threading support since most of today's computers have two, four, six and even more processor cores.
Adobe definitely has not skimped on heavy-handed Digital Rights Management -- the buzzword for its effort to keep you from stealing this software. Adobe runs its Windows background software even when you aren't running Acrobat. The software phones-home any hardware anomalies or license-key issues that might arouse suspicion.
In the past, Acrobat has been accused of being "bloatware"--software that is overly elaborate and innefficient in completing simple tasks. This can be inevitable when you have these giant applications with very long development cycles and inevatible staff turnover.
Acrobat still has the "feel" of being "code-by-committee." In making each new version, the marketers tell the developers the feature-sets they want. Those features get tacked-on. That spark of true innovation and daring originality that defines the startup-phase of a new idea is lost in bureaucracy. Bloatware happens when programming stops being art and stops being invention; Acrobat is long-decended down that slippery slope.
The consequence of aggressive Digital Rights Management and Bloatware is more compatibility problems -- I personally had a dramatic compability problem that caused my mostly-clean Windows 7 install to hang while booting after installing this software. I'll give Adobe the benefit-of-the-doubt and hope I was a rare exception.
If you intend to use this software for exactly the same things you would have used it for in 1999 -- and you are lucky enough to not fall on the wrong side of Adobe's DRM or compatibility issues -- it will work just fine. You can scan documents, merge documents, recognize text and all the great things you were able to do when Desktop PCs seemed as new as iPads.
Here's hoping that Adobe uses Acrobat XI to surprise us with something daring, bare, efficient, inventive, fast and thrilling. For now, Acrobat X is more of a General Motors minivan (and about as reliable) than it is a Corvette.Adobe Acrobat X Standard OverviewAcrobat X Standard -- B0046DMZH8

Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard Edition ReviewI am a physician who has his medical records stored in PDF format. What I do is get documents in PDF format in a number of ways, and then electronically sign them. I annotate the files about a third of the time with short text notes. Acrobat 5 worked OK, but had a number of glitches such as not dealing with file names over 32 characters, crashed on paste into text areas, and it lost files on occasion. I expected version 6 would make a barely adequate product work in this environment.
The apparent rants by the other reviewers are, unfortunately, spot on. From my standpoint, version 6 is a frustrating product for what is such a routine task, signing documents. In version 5 you could touch key "d" and the signature cursor would appear, you selected where the signature would appear, and a press of the return key completed the signature.
In version 6 it works this way (once you set a number of preferences and your digital signature file): You use the mouse to click on the Sign Document tool button (The keystroke shortcut is gone - you HAVE to use the mouse), and up pops a dialog telling you that the document is not certified. You dismiss that dialog and another dialog pops up, where you select either visible or invisible mode for the signature (no way to set a preference, it ALWAYs pops up). You then get to draw the location for the sig. Then you get a dialog for why you are signing, like v5.x did, but now you have to go to the mouse and move to click the Save button, otherwise you get a save as dialog as the default. No way to preference that, either.
The save process is a joke, except that it works so poorly every time that it is VERY frustrating. The previous reviewer who commented on the slowness of the save was being kind. The software scans the file multiple times to perform a number of housekeeping tasks with every save, EVEN IF IT JUST DID THEM ON A PREVIOUS SAVE. I know this because there is a cheery status bar on the bottom left that explains why your time is being wasted. I timed myself on this: 68 documents in 2 hours and 12 minutes.
The Adobe people have made a number of decisions for the user on how to operate. This has caused a tremendous slowdown in workflow with 6 compared to version 5. The interface has lost a number of keystroke shortcuts, requires that you now switch between mouse and keyboard, and has added steps that induce fumbling in the interface and workflow.
A BIG STEP SIDEWAYS.
I am not going to use it at work unless some improvement in workflow is seen. I will not be able to keep up with my work with this poor interface, and I am only at about 25 documents a day to sign. Normally I get that done in 15 minutes, including time to annotate and do a few multiple saves on some of the docs. When I am at 50 to 75 signatures a day I would be spending an extra 2 hours a day at work if I needed to use Acrobat 6.0
Stay away from this one.
By the way, if you look at my other reviews you'll see I'm generally a level headed sort. But with the time waste I put up using this package compared to v5 I felt I really had to join in and warn everyone about this one like the other reviewers have.

Adobe Acrobat Professional 9 ReviewAdobe Acrobat 9.0 has been a source of frustration. Conflict between Adobe's PDF Maker add-in and Microsoft Office 2007 causes the Microsoft application to crash. Adobe's add-in is automatically disabled by Word, Excel, etc., so you can't make an Adobe PDF while using a Microsoft application. If you enable the add-in in Word (a tricky process in itself) and then try to create an Adobe PDF from a Word file, Word crashes. But now you can create a PDF from a Word file when you are in the Adobe application! Major heartburn! I wish I had stayed with Adobe Acrobat 5.0!
On Adobe's website there is a TechNote that will guide you through no less than FIVE solutions (three printed pages) to help you resolve the conflict between Acrobat 9.0 and Microsoft Office 2007. Adobe Acrobat Standard 9 ReviewAcrobat 8 has never integrated with Office 2007, or worked right with my scanner, so I foolishly bought Acrobat 9 in the hope it would be an improvement. It's not.
It seems Adobe simply focused on jamming more features into an already bloated and buggy application making things even worse. The office 2007 integration *still* does not work--even after spending hours trying the suggested solutions from Adobe. Beware, even for this $300 product, Adobe CHARGES for any phone support beyond basic installation help.
In addition to not working with Office 2007, Acrobat 9 is slow, throws up frequent error messages, and leaves part of itself running even after you shut it down which keeps Windows from shutting down without clicking past an "Acrobat has stopped responding" message. I also had trouble with Adobe's finicky product activation.
Memo to Adobe: More features are useless if the basics don't work reliably. People don't want products that take 20 minutes to install, forever to load, require hours of searching for and trying various support solutions to no avail, throw up frequent error messages, etc.
Someone else needs to come along (Google are you listening?) and derail Adobe's PDF train with a simple, reliable product that's more like Acrobat used to be in the old days (say version 5). For the 3% of the PDF users who actually *need* all the extra obscure publishing features, they can still buy Adobe's buggy bloatware. Adobe Acrobat Standard 9 Upgrade ReviewThe upgrade requirements aren't mentioned here, but according to Adobe's website you can upgrade "from Acrobat 6.x, 7.x or 8.x Standard".
The license allows an additional install on a laptop or home computer, provided you don't use that copy at the same time as the main install. From the license: "... the primary user of the Computer on which the Software is installed ('Primary User') may install a second copy of the Software for his or her exclusive use on either a portable Computer or a Computer located at his or her home, provided that the Software on the portable or home Computer is not used at the same time as the Software on the primary Computer ..."
The product requires activation, which includes sending license information to Adobe.
According to Adobe's website, it is OK to move the software between computers you own, but you need to manually deactivate the software on the old computer before the move. You can launch deactivation using the Help/Deactivate menu item. (You may need to wait a minute or two after Acrobat starts before this menu item appears.)

Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional Upgrade from Professional Version 6 ReviewDon't take my word for it that's a quote from the title of a recent post excoriating this irritating and increasingly bloated product on Slashdot.
Be warned: Adobe has not learned its lesson, and despite the outcry that followed the release of version 6, this latest release of Acrobat continues Adobe's aggressive trend of intruding into your desktop environment, again, as in version 6 without providing an easy way to undo the damage once its done--in fact, it's now nearly impossible. Like earlier releases, this version of Acrobat adds startup macros and new toolbar buttons to your existing applications and adds menu entries to your desktop "right click" menus. Adobe argues that these are conveniences, but they are entirely unnecessary (for most of us "printing" to Adobe PDF achieves the same result, is much more convenient, and a more natural model), and clutter what for most users is either a too-crowded user interface (for those who don't have the knowledge or patience to customize it) or a carefully tuned one (for those who do). Unlike many well-behaved applications that provide obvious ways of avoiding this kind of intrusive and disruptive behavior (e.g. through a simple checkbox option in a settings dialog), Acrobat's "option" for disabling this behavior, once deeply hidden in the setup process,is now almost completely absent. To disable the "Convert to Adobe PDF" button that mysteriously appears in the Outlook mail editor, for example, one has to be sure to choose "this feature will not be available" from the "Microsoft Outlook" option under "Acrobat PDFMaker" under "Create Adobe PDF". Simply deleting the button using Outlook's toolbar customization feature will not work: it comes right back when the editor is next opened. Similar problems arise in Word, Excel, Visio, Project, and Internet Explorer. And there's simply no way to get rid of the never-used "Convert to Adobe PDF" and "Combine in Acrobat..." entries in that appear in the desktop context menus for files (even if one installs none of the Acrobat PDFMaker features).
For the technically inclined wishing to repair some of the damage that Acrobat 7 does, there are complex but largely effective step by step instructions available on the web, but even the authors of these are driven to despair by version 7: ("Adobe has really pushed the boat out with Acrobat 7 and managed to screw Word royally") .
In short, Acrobat will make a mess of your working environment, there's no way to completely fix it, and even the partial fix is a pain (and not well documented). (This may seem a minor issue, but if every application followed Adobe's reckless example, our working environments would start to look like strip malls, crowded with features screaming for our attention to the point where it is hard to find what we need when we need it. One of the great strengths of the personal computer desktop is that users can configure it in ways that suit their needs; no application should interfere with that.)
Experienced Acrobat users will also notice that this version continues another frustrating trend for Acrobat (and most other Adobe applications): it is yet again slower to launch than the previous version. In fact, on my 2 GHz Pentium 4, it takes longer to launch than the entire Visual Studio .NET development environment, and longer than the boot sequence for Windows XP!
There are other minor problems as well (arbitrary rearrangements of menu and tool bar items, etc.) but these two major flaws are more than bad enough. Unless you really need the latest Acrobat features, you should probably avoid this upgrade. And if the "improvements" in this release are any indication of where Adobe plans to go with future releases, it may be time to start looking elsewhere for a tool for digital document management.
Fortunately, there's no reason at all to upgrade. Nitro PDF Professional V6 ReviewThe best of the bunch I tested for home office use.
I use PDF creation way more than I thought I would. I hardly ever print out web pages anymore, I've possibly saved enough on toner to pay for the program, if not, I will.
I purchased Nitro PDF Pro 6 after I tested the trial version. I also sampled trial versions of Adobe Acrobat Pro, ABBYY PDF Transformer, PDFill, gDoc Fusion (a unique, very cool application) and Nitro PDF Express. I came to the conclusion that THERE IS NO PERFECT PDF PROGRAM, and suggest you make your choice on how much you will use the program.
Adobe Acrobat Pro is the original. It is the largest, most complete, most complex, and most expensive. It is fairly intuitive if you have used a lot of software. Of all the programs I tested, it would require the most time and effort to become a power user. It is the Big Boy PDF program, but it didn't convert to Word any better than Nitro PDF Pro 6. Actually, none of the programs convert with 100% accuracy. You can get Adobe Acrobat Pro for $125 at a number of sites. If you want the biggest tool box spend the additional $50 and get this one.
ABBYY PDF Transformer works and it come with an add on screen capture utility that allows you make a PDF file of whatever is displayed on your monitor. I thought less of its user interface than the others, I wasn't able to just jump right in and start using it. My biggest dislike is that the program's menus that plug into Word and Excel float on the desktop rather than on Word or Excel's tool bars. I did not check to see if there is a way anchor it.
PDFill did not interest me at all. I didn't test it enough to add comments.
gDoc Fusion is very cool. It is unique in that its interface is like touch technology, and it will work with touch screen monitors. I think it did the poorest job of converting PDF to Word. To be fair, though, it worked OK at converting PDFs generated by gDocs to Word. It is exceptionally good for scrolling through the pages of documents; better than all the rest. Check this one out just see how it works. Its price is comparable and there is a home user license option.
As a home office user, Nitro PDF Pro 6 is the program I liked the best. The interface uses ribbon menus similar to Office 2007. I was able to jump in and start using it. It opens with a tutorial asking what you want to do, create something new, convert something, edit something, combine or split something, sign or add security, or review, etc. Then it opens the instruction on how to do the chosen task. It won't take long for you to turn that opening tutorial off; the program is easy to learn. It converts as well as Adobe Acrobat Pro; though in all it is not as big and powerful (the program is about 1/10th the size). Regarding the files size issue mentioned in other reviews, Nitro Pro PDF6 gives you options. I converted a 98KB Word document using the Web Quality setting, the PDF file was a smaller 35KB. Using the Office Quality setting, the PDF file was a smaller 34KB. Using the Print Quality, the PDF file was a much larger 1.14MB. Nitro PDF Express does the creation and converting as well as the Pro version, but the interface I thought was much weaker. I searched and found a coupon and purchased a license for the Pro version for just $25 more than the Express version. I think the Pro version worth the extra expense.
My primary interest in a PDF application was to get my own documents onto my Kindle (to do so, set the document's font to a 20-24 pt font size and convert it to PDF/A, then, with the Kindle connected to a USB port, copy the PDF document to the Kindle's Document folder), but I have found I use it for saving info from web pages most of all.
UPDATE: Nitro has released a free update to v 6.1.2.1 which has significantly increased the speed of the program. Adobe Acrobat X Professional Student & Teacher Edition ReviewVerification is never fun, but I really believe Adobe's verification process is as easy as it could possibly be.
I recently purchased the Student and Teacher Editions (academic versions) of Adobe Dreamweaver CS5, Photoshop CS5 Extended and Acrobat X Professional.
The entire verification process is very easy and it helps to have your scanned ID or any additional paperwork ready ahead of time. I received all three activation serial numbers in less than 24 hours. Adobe says that it could take up to two business days for verification.
The following might be some helpful information:
Adobe allows you to install and activate your purchased software onto two computers. I have the above-mentioned software installed and activated on two computers on a home network. I am able to 'run' Dreamweaver, Photoshop or Acrobat on both computers at the same time without any licensing problems.
To install and activate your Adobe software on a third computer, you must first 'de-activate' the software on one of the other two computers. Make sure if you ever throw out or give away an old computer, that you first de-activate the Adobe software. Otherwise, you will lose one of your two activations.
After installing and activating, you can then register your software and receive a free gift from Adobe. The gifts vary for each software title. Some of the gifts are AdobeTextPro Font, Photoshop plugins, discounts on Adobe software and 30-day access to training videos on either Lynda.com or CreativeEdge.com. Lynda.com has an amazing amount of training videos. You may want to check out these two websites before registering so you have time to evaluate them.
Concerning future upgrades of Adobe academic software, here is a quote from Adobe's website:
"Upgrades don't have special education pricing. However, you can purchase upgrades for educational products at the regular upgrade prices from any Authorized Education Reseller."
So according to Adobe, you can upgrade your academic software for their standard (non-academic) software if or when you no longer have student or teacher status. That is a really good deal! Many software companies won't allow you to upgrade academic software.
If you are not a student or teacher and you want to purchase academic software, you may want to consider signing up for an interesting class at your local community college. You could then get your student ID and your student status. You don't need to be a full-time student and you don't need to be seeking a degree. Maybe you can find a convenient on-line class. You can then go to a website like JourneyEd and be eligible to purchase all kinds of academic software and hardware.
Also, Microsoft has a program called DreamSpark that allows students to download full-versions of their software for free. You need to first sign up for a Windows Live ID and then sign in and get verified on the Microsoft DreamSpark website. Microsoft uses your college-issued '.edu' email address for verification. During the verification process Microsoft sends an activation email to your .edu email address. You must log in to your .edu email account and click on an activation link within the activation email. My verification didn't go very smoothly as my college had blacklisted Microsoft's mail servers and wouldn't allow me to receive the activation email from DreamSpark. I was eventually verified 'manually' by Microsoft tech support. I had to email them a copy of my scanned school ID and a copy of my class schedule.
After you are verified, Microsoft will verify your student status once a year. You can download all of the software that they have available on their DreamSpark.com website. There are no time limits on the software. You can continue to use their software after your student status expires. After being recently verified, I downloaded the full version of MS Visual Studio 2010 Professional, another very expensive program that was completely free.

Adobe Acrobat X Professional Upgrade ReviewThis new Adobe Acrobat X is terrible and annoying to use. A big disappointment. It's the "Vista" of Adobe.
When you launch Acrobat X there's always a start up screen that pops up in the middle of the screen and cannot be disabled, asking if you want to open a file, create a new file, etc., like the user is an idiot.
There are only 5 main menus on the top: File, Edit, View, Window, and Help. Acrobat 9 has 10 menu choices. Gone from the main menu on top are Document, Comments, Forms, Tools, Advanced, and Plug-Ins. They were all moved to the new right side panel you have to open up everytime you want to do something and takes up space and covers up the PDF.
The Find box is gone from the top. Now you have to hit "Ctrl F" and a small little box appears on the right of the screen to type in the text in. Everytime you want to search a document you have to go through the hassle of opening up the little box.
There is a fading toolbar window at the bottom of the screen instead of being on the top where it ought to be. When you open a PDF you have to scroll down to the bottom of the page and try to figure out where the hidden fading toolbar is, mouse over it, wait for it appear then press the Print or Save button. On the fading toolbar they have the page count and when scrolling through a PDF it dissapears and you can't tell what page you're on unless you mouse over the faded toolbar and then is disappears after a few seconds. Also in the faded toolbar is the zoom menu where you have to mouse over it to appear and select the page size you want and then it disappears.
When you have a PDF file open and want to save or re-save it, you have to actually select the PDF first before the file save dialog box opens. Why is it necessary to select a PDF you already have open?
Using Adobe Acrobat X drives me crazy. You can't focus on what you're doing. I reverted back to Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended 9.4.2.Adobe Acrobat X Professional Upgrade Overview

PDF Converter PRO 7.0 Retail ReviewPDF Converter Professional 7.0 is one of several otherwise excellent software packages from Nuance that are let down by the company's draconian approach to software theft.
Like Microsoft and Adobe, Nuance uses an activation process. This is not unreasonable, but, unlike these two, Nuance has a very flaky implementation, prompting me to knock a star off the rating.
The software itself is fine - indeed, it is streets ahead of Acrobat, especially on cost - but after using it for some months it suddenly decided that I had pirated the thing and had installed it on another computer. Nope. I had just added some external drives. The software then interpreted this as a different computer. Even Windows doesn't do that. Adobe fixed similar issues some years ago.
This is by design, according to Nuance's support staff, which told me that "changing parts of the computer will trigger to change the machine finger print and changing the machine finger print will require activation. Using an external hard drive is included on the parts of the computer which change the machine finger print. We apologized but that how our activation works."
This is not how other "activated" software works.
You have to be careful with this activation process. Do it too often - easily done if you turn external drives on and off - and you are deemed to be a software thief and you are locked out of the software that you have paid for.
If you are choosing between different PDF options, you might want to see if the alternative has a more sane approach to activation.
This warning applies to other Nuance packages because they suffer from the same disease. I have had it on OmniPage Professional 17 and Dragon NaturallySpeaking Premium 11, others have been hit on PaperPort Professional V12.0. It would make me think twice about buying future versions.Update: the latest thing to provoke an activation request in PDF Converter 7 was a BIOS update on my computer. Nuance tells me that this is correct. BIOS updates change the machine's fingerprint, so activation is required. Funnily, neither Microsoft nor Adobe see this change as serious enough to warrant reactivation of Acrobat or Windows.
