Diablo 2 Expansion: Lord of Destruction ReviewMany people complain about the high price of the Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction (LOD) Expansion set. To do so, I think, is to miss the point. You buy the game to play it, and its playability is what matters. People tend to think that an "expansion" merely adds a "10% more" to a game - but the fact is, LOD adds so much to the original game that you will probably never look back. Why would you give up a doubled stash? The 800x600 resolution pestered for way back in 2000 when D2 Classic was released? Instant switching between two sets of weapon/shield? New class-specific items, new uniques, greatly improved set items (gain bonuses as you collect each item, instead of having to complete them), elite items, runes (and runeword items), crafted items (i.e. make your own rares)? Two new classes (a druid who can summon creatures, cast elemental spells and shapeshift; an assassin who practises martial arts, lays traps and hones shadow disciplines), and an entire new act set in a wintry landscape (bunnies included)? Afraid to play alone? Don't worry, now your hirelings survive more than their first hit, and can be equiped with weapons and armour - they can even teleport when you walk too far! And some even have paladin auras! And they can be resurrected! How about little little details like: you can now reset the gambling screen at will; gambling prices scale with your level; a repair-all-equiped items button; blue items now get the most powerful prefixes/suffixes, giving them renewed value; click an item on the Horadric Cube to place it inside (you have to do it to realise the convenience); Act 2 Desert Warrior hirelings cast paladin auras; Act 5 Barbarian hirelings use Stun and Bash; town NPCs now sell more items; Act-end bosses can now be repeatedly killed for chance to find top items (in D2 Classic, great stuff only drops once); you can walk through your hirelings/minions (no more traffic jams in the Maggot Lair)... and the list goes on.Let's be honest though - everyone knows that the game code is not perfect; it has its bugs. Few games (especially of this scale) can claim to be bug-free. But despite this, the game is totally playable. I myself have not stopped playing D2 since June 30, 2000. The important thing to savour is the fact that the developers, Blizzard, are keen on resolving technical problems and gamneplay issues: think about it - Blizzard has released NINE patches to date. This may seem to suggest that the game is wrought full of bugs, but change your perspective - what it ultimately says is that its developer is conscientious enough to keep working at it. How many software developers can claim this level of diligence?Ultimately, the game is super-fun. As I suggested in my review of Diablo 2 (Classic), the game rewards all kinds of players, from the undiscerning clicker to the meticulous strategist - that is one of Blizzard's secret ingredients: allowing every style of player to find something that suits them in the game, and yet never fully satisfying them. I suppose that's why, after countless games, my wife is still trying to perfect her (deceptively simple?) mace-stunner barbarian...Diablo 2 Expansion: Lord of Destruction OverviewNew Characters:Assassin -- The Order of Mage Slayers was formed after the Vizjerei survived the tragedy brought on by Bartuc and Horazon. Their purpose was to watch for rogue magi that may become corrupted by the forces of Evil. To be effective at this task they were trained in abilities that were not conducive to Demonic corruption. Living as rumor and myth to the general population, even other magi knew very little about this mysterious order. Their reputation was shrouded in mystery and t

Demon Stone ReviewI picked up this game for two reasons. First because it's a licensed D&D product, and I'm sorta obsessive that way. Second, because R.A. Salvatore's name was attached to it. This is one of those purchases I'm going to live to regret.
For starters, it's an obvious XBOX port. The PC version of the game even makes references to "push the black button" in game. I don't own a joypad for my PC, that's why I have an XBOX. If you try to play this game with a keyboard and mouse you're not going to enjoy it. Trust me.
The graphics are pretty good, and take advantage of my DirectX 9 compatible card, but even still it could be better. There are a few times where there was some pretty bad clipping going on.
Gameplay is incredibly linear, and the "immersive storyline" is a joke. I've played standup arcade games with greater depth. The character levelup occurs at the end of each "episode" and all 3 characters go up at the same rate. Levelling is handled by spending experience points to acquire skills, and the game barely adheres to D&D 3.5e rules (despite it's claims). Also, characters earn an absurd amount of gold between each level although it's unclear where they are getting it. You spend pretty much all of it on powerups when you go up a level.
This game in no way resembles an RPG, despite it's origins in the D&D ruleset (which they obviously ignored). There's no character development at all. Not even in the beginning of the game.
Also, I love R.A. Salvatore's writing, but none of it is apparent in this game.
I'll keep it because it has the D&D logo on it, and like I said I'm kinda funny that way, but I don't recommend you pay anywhere near full price for this game.Demon Stone OverviewForgotten Realms: Demon Stone delivers the feel of an action movie in an incredible role-playing experience. Its award-winning game engine combines with an incredible story written by best-selling fantasy author R.A. Salvatore. Journey to the mythic land of Faerun, where monsters and magic are real. You set out in a party of three, to right an ancient wrong and restore order to the world. Fulfill prophecies and build a legend as you fight to stop demons from destroying all that you know. Darkspore ReviewThere are two basic ways to follow up one game with another: an out-and-out sequel, which runs the risk of either being too much like the original or leaving off some cherished feature the fans of the original loved; and then there's the "spiritual successor": a 'like' game that is similar to, but not directly tied to, the original (like Bioshock and System Shock 2).
Darkspore is more of the latter--it is only barely tied to the Spore universe at all and only vaguely plays like a Spore game. It's still tons of fun to play, don't get me wrong, but if you're expecting a multi-stage Sims-style world creator...well, this is more like a Diablo-esque, Dungeon-Siege-y game. Gameplay is from overhead and you click on targets and techniques or use your keyboard to automate your creatures' combat with the many opponents wandering through a level.
The concept of Darkspore is this: the Crogenitors got to playing around with DNA, and eventually decided to stack so many customizations/modifications onto the creatures they created that this "Exponential DNA" (called "eDNA") destabilized. It formed "Darkspore", genetically tainted mutations that were practically unstoppable and went on a rampage. The Crogenitors were nearly wiped out; survivors were loaded onto ships with computers capable of solving the eDNA problem. That's where you come in: you're a recently-awakened Crogenitor. eDNA has been stabilized, and you now have a handful of creatures capable of standing up to the Darkspore, but not likely to go nuts and try to kill you. You walk them through various places Diablo-style and wipe out any Darkspore creatures you find. In the meantime, you're aboard your spaceship and your computer walks you through the in-between moments, like modifying a creature, adding/removing team members, or picking what type of adventure you want to do next.
There are some twists that make your gameplay unique. First, you can find, add, and upgrade each of your creatures' capabilities. The Editor resembles the Spore editor, creature control just doesn't make as much difference as Spore offered you. Most of your work is closer to Spore's Civilization stage, where you primarily dressed your creatures in interesting ways (though you still have very much the same ability to change body parts, size, shape, paint-up, and etc.). The other change from a typical dungeon-crawler is that your creatures are swappable: you'll find yourself using one creature for monsters that are numerous but weak, then switching to another when there's just one or two strong opponents and you need some heavy one-on-one damage. This also helps you out in the health department: if one creature is starting to get badly injured, just switch to another, finish the battle, and then switch back to collect the heals and power-ups. There's also the ability (eventually) to be more squad-based, controlling multiple creatures, and of course you can also team up with your friends for some co-op fun. Your game is "in the cloud" - based on your Spore account, it puts your stats on whatever computer you log into the game from (bye-bye bad DRM? Let's hope!) and the online arena also lets you jump into PvP if that's more to your liking.
Graphically, Darkspore is gorgeous. Colors are bright, and the designers clearly went to a lot of trouble to add a good color palette, lots of lighting, and places that glitter or sparkle. I sometimes found myself gaping at crystalline formations in the background when I needed to be watching my creature. One nice touch that I liked: it may just be my hardware, but the level of blood and gore in the Beta was ridiculous. It quite literally looked like a bright raspberry cloud would explode in a 20-foot radius every time you defeated an enemy. Thankfully, you can turn this off, and I think it even looks cooler, watching the enemies swirl into a dark cloud of energy when they're defeated.
If you're a fan of the original Spore series, you will like this game if you treat it more like "the dark future after a long run of the Galactic Adventures pack". Consider it an Action RPG and not a Civ/Sim/Strategy game like Spore. If you enjoyed other Diablo-like games and like the ability to more closely tweak a stable of characters, you'll be in for a lot of fun with Darkspore.Darkspore Overview
