Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade Additional License Pack - 1 PC ReviewMicrosoft has many enemies. That's what happens when you are #1 and many below you wish they could be at the top.
Vista is a solid product. It was not as solid the day it was released, but what is? It's now only been a few months and the updates that apply the moment you install or upgrade to Vista provide you with a smooth experience.
Is the interface different? Oh yea. Is it bad? Is it slow? No. It's fine. Vista runs only SLIGHTLY slower on an older PC with a Pentium III chip or older but why wouldn't you expect that? You can't get more features AND more power and expect a faster machine when your hardware is getting along in the years.
In addition, if you simply don't understand the nature of Vista, then you haven't yet read Greg Perry's "Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows Vista All in One" (Amazon Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows Vista All in One (Sams Teach Yourself)) and frankly, this is hands-down the best way for a newcomer - even if you are or are not comfortable with XP - to master EVERYthing you REALLY need to know about Vista.
Software is not always obvious. That does not mean it's bad or difficult to use or requires a huge learning curve. Once you get Vista, beg or borrow or buy "Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows Vista All in One" and you will be ready to become a MASTER at the product. I went through what YOU are going through and I know most Vista books and sites DO NOT give you what you need to make this product work well FOR YOU. This book does and I've read all the top-selling Vista books.
Now I don't care if you get "Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows Vista All in One" or not, although you should, but you need to stop listening to the hype of those who have axes to grind with Microsoft. If you want to move FORWARD with your computer you need to have the juice needed which means a moderately recent PC and you need Vista.
The number one reason for getting Ultimate and not a lower Vista product is the BitLocker encryption technology and the ability to make a ghosted image of your disk drive that Vista can restore. If you've used Symantec's DriveImage or Ghost products then you know these alone can run you more than $50. It's thrown in with Vista Ultimate and you'll REALLY use these tools a lot.
Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade Additional License Pack - 1 PC OverviewWindows Vista Ultimate is the flagship edition of Windows Vista across consumer and small business desktop PCs and mobile PCs. Microsoft Windows Vista Business 32-bit for System Builders ReviewMicrosoft Windows Vista Business 32-bit for System Builders [DVD] Software makers, bless their little "off-the-shelf-selves" do really try to make things better and after working with this on a considerable number of builds over the last 18 months, it is pretty good. Make sure that you have enough band-width to download 45 updates to start with. Do not install production programs until it is updated it self. It will still need anti-virus protection. I would say run from upgrades and only make a clean install on a crip new machine assembled with Vista products in mind. For future upgrades, remember 64 bit is coming. While we hate to say good bye to good old XP It is time. Hope this helps.Microsoft Windows Vista Business 32-bit for System Builders Overview

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit for System Builders Reviewthere's no reason not to get a Vista box. It's fairly stable, but not without it's bugs. In the 2 weeks I've been using it, I would say it runs into more problems than XP. But recovering from those pitfalls is smoother than XP. On the whole, it's a wash as an upgrade.
If you have a stable XP box that meets your needs, there's no compelling reason to make the switch. The software is on the pricey side, but the expense is not limited to that alone. To get the most from the new bells and whistles of the Premium edition, you'll probably need to upgrade some hardware for the new Aero graphic interface.
Some of Aero is nice. The sidebar gadgets are nifty, as is the flip between windows feature. OTOH, the transparent title bars get old after a few days and it locks you into a default lilac color scheme for the menubars and whatnot. You can revert to a classic window layout with complete control over the appearance, but it takes away Aero's nicer features when you do. I'd much prefer it if I could keep the sidebar and window flip, without being tied to Aero's window appearance. Maybe they'll fix this annoyance in a future upgrade, then again, maybe they won't.
By far, the biggest annoyance with this OS is the security 'feature' designed to protect your computer from - you. Sometimes it seems you click more warning and approval boxes than you do just using the computer. You can disable this completely - at a price. It can cause some software - such as Adobe Acrobat to not install. Like with the Aero feature, it's all or nothing. There are no in between settings. Switching back and forth between the settings also carries a price. After the required reboot, many personal settings, passwords, cookies, etc are gone. The thing to do is to set up a user account with each setting and switch back and forth as needed. Again, maybe they will fix this aggravation in a future upgrade.
Sooner or later, all PC users will be using this OS. It's inescapable and we all know it. That said, there is nothing about Vista Home Premium that should make you feel any need to rush into it.Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit for System Builders Overview

win Vista Ultimate 64-bit English 1pk ReviewFirst off, this is an OEM software. That means it is intended to be installed on a new computer build NOT upgrade an existing copy of Windows. It is possible to install it on an existing computer by formatting an existing or new hard drive, but that would violate the license for this particular incarnation of Vista. If you want to install it on an existing computer, buy a full retail copy, or an upgrade copy.
I love Vista 64-bit. It is fast, easy to use, and the best Windows to date. Anyone who is still ripping Vista at this point doesn't own Vista, or is an inexperienced computer user, or a Mac fan that just wants to pour oil on a fire. Vista, the much belated and maligned 6th incarnation of the Windows operating system had real problems a year ago. Almost all of those problems have been fixed. Some of what users describe as problems are in fact less a problem with Vista than they are with computer buyer's perceptions and expectations.
So why is Vista beat up all the time? The most frequent complaint I hear is that it is a 'memory hog.' Honestly, this is a perception, not a reality. Vista does require more ran than XP, as XP required more than the previous windows, etc., etc. The reality is that RAM has gotten remarkably cheap, and using RAM liberally is a GOOD THING. The bottle neck in computing has been 4GB of ram on all 32-bit systems, but even with 4GB (3-3.5GB accessible to the system) almost no one will use all of the ram. With the 64-bit version, it is possible to run 8Gb of ram on a decent motherboard, and it is also possible to buy 8gb of RAM for $150! Why, in these days of super inexpensive RAM, don't those who feel Vista is too slow, just buy more? Honestly?
Another complaint is that drivers don't work or are not available for a particular software or hardware. There was a lot of truth to that a year ago. Now, after service pack 1, and over months of running Vista 64-bit exclusively, I can say that I have zero, yes zero, driver issues. Everything runs like a champ. I should note that I have a high end gaming computer, and have a lot of software installed. To not have a single driver issue is amazing, and something I could not say about XP one year into it's release.
If you know about computers, and are ready to make the switch to Vista, there has never been a better time. Most of the kinks are worked out, and while I can't promise you won't have any issues with drivers, it's getting less likely by the day. Programmers are catching on that Vista is not just going to disappear and everyone go back to XP, and that waiting for the next Windows will not put any money in their wallets, and have started to produce software written for Vista. Hardware manufacturers are also getting a clue and releasing solid Vista and Vista 64-bit drivers for their devices.
Frankly, this is the most powerful windows yet. 64-bit computing is hitting it's stride, and in another year or so, we'll all be looking back at 32-bit with the same derision as when the transition was made from 16 to 32 bit computers. 32 bit's days are numbered. It's time to move on.
win Vista Ultimate 64-bit English 1pk OverviewThis OEM software is intended for system builders only and cannot be transferred to another PC once it is installed. The purchaser of this software is required to comply with the terms of the System Builder license, including the responsibility of providing all end-user support for the software.

Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit for System Builders ReviewThis version of Windows Vista is the OEM version, which means that it does not come with a box or a manual, just a "Quick Install" guide. This is the FULL version of Vista but another thing that it is lacking is support from Microsoft. Because this version is intended for (as the title suggests) system builders, whoever that may be, they are the people who are supposed to provide the End User Support not Microsoft. It does, however, still include Windows Update so there do not think that you will not be getting updates from Microsoft, because you do. But if you are building a computer for your grandmother, and she BSOD's Vista, its up to you to fix it; Not Microsoft. Another difference between this version and the full 400 $ version is that this version only comes with the 32 Bit version of Windows Vista, but the full version comes with both the 32 and 64 Bit versions. So if you are pretty technology Savvy and you do not need Microsoft's support and you know what type of processor (64 or 32 bit) then the OEM version is the version for you.Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit for System Builders Overview

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic FULL VERSION ReviewI'm an IT guy at a University, and I recently had to start installing Windows Vista.
First of all, you need a minimum of 2 Gigs of ram to run this bloatware. I installed it on this guy's laptop, and with NOTHING else running, it was using between 650 - 750 megs of ram TO DO NOTHING! As soon as we started doing anything, it was using over 1 Gig of RAM. Way to go Microsoft! Just want people wanted. A bloated OS that won't run on older machines and will run slow even on new machines.
Avoid it. Don't buy it. Switch to Linux. AnytimeHBasic to HPrem Upg SP1 ReviewMy computer came with Vista Basic and I liked what I was seeing in the "Mojave" commercials so I invested in the upgrade. Install was easy HOWEVER I had to re-install my print drivers (now my Lexmark printer doesn't work with all it's features), web cams and a couple of programs like Photoshop 4. It was almost like installing a whole new OS and not just unlocking certain features.

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Full Version - Old Version ReviewBACKGROUND: I have used PCs and Macs on a regular, working basis, for 12 years. I approach each platform as a tool, not a social statement. Except where gaming is concerned, computers are tools and that's all they are. Just like a swiss army knife for the digital age. For some jobs the Windows tool has been more effective for me, for other jobs Mac OS X has been more effective. And it's not a question of "graphics vs. business", which is about the dumbest oversimplification in the history of modern computing. Anyone who tells you that does not use both platforms on a regular basis. If they did, they'd know both are robust in the range of jobs they can accomplish: accounting, charting, office, mainstream database work of all types (Oracle, SQL, Filemaker, etc), photographic and digital post-production, audio production and post-production, 3D modeling and animation, CAD, C/C++ programming, web development, mechanical drawing, presentations, spreadsheets, illustration... the list is ENDLESS. And almost without exception, every big name program is made not only for Mac and Windows, but many times Linux too. In short, if a person can't get a lot of great things done on either platform, the problem is the user, not the operating system. ; )
MY TAKE ON VISTAXP PRO USERS: IF you have a fully updated, stable install of XP Pro and your apps are running efficiently, I do *not* recommend a Vista upgrade until MS releases the first major service update, which is likely to include some security updates too. Most experienced XP Pro users will not benefit from upgrading to Vista right now unless they love to play with new software and/or are an early adopter types who can trouble-shoot most problems.
WINDOWS 95, 98, ME USERS: 1) If you are not considering the purchase of updated hardware and software soon, YOU SHOULD. : ) If you ARE considering a new computer soon, and are using a much older system this probably means you are just a casual user, dabbling with internet, word processing and other simple tasks. For this group it probably makes sense to order your new computer with Vista, and not XP installed. Vista is a much nicer system than any of the older variants, and is also much more stable and more secure than the older systems. It provides useful information to you more quickly, it's easier on the eyes, is more capable in terms of its features, and in general is less of a PITA than these heavily outdated Windows systems.
Just be prepared to spend a good chunk of money on a fancier system than you're used to, because you're not going to run Vista efficiently without:
A) Lots of RAM (Gigabytes, not Megabytes)
B) Fast Processors (that's plural, as in, more than one - and at more than 2GHz a piece preferably)
C) A very powerful video card and a big hard drive (as in, more than 400GB)
INTERFACE: to be fair, Vista *does* borrow (and I use that term loosely) A LOT from Mac OS X, which is why people say it looks nicer. It *does* look and feel more streamlined and elegant, there's no question. All the new window transparency, sidebar widgets, streamlined glassy buttons... that was all inspired by Apple's OS design. That's a big part of why it took MS so long. Aside from problems making the clunky parts of XP better, MS was watching Apple update its system about every 18 months, in order cherry pick some of the best "bells and whistles" for Vista. Much easier watch Apple innovate every year, see what works, and then every so often... imitate. It's a little shameless, but honestly it's a good business tactic. I don't admire MS for this, but I understand it, and that's enough because as I say... computers are tools. Not "who we are". Yes Mac users (the ones I've known anyway) are creative thinkers, trend setters and take the road less traveled... but it's the quality of their work and their art, not their computer, that defines them IMO.
FEATURES: there *are* some new additions that make it easier to:
A) Get the information you need from online sources, without actually going online
B) Find files more quickly (once the LONG indexing process is completed - think hours, not minutes)
C) Organize files more easily, and in general get around the system more easily.
D) Work on your pictures, music, etc. Sidebar: It's worth noting Apple is readying a major update as well, which -among several other things- will bring full 64bit support and a feature which lets users run XP Pro or Vista inside the Mac, at full speed, with all your peripherals. In fact, if you're willing to use a beta component, you can do that right now on any Intel-based Mac. There are even 3rd party virtualization products that will let you run Windows XP and Vista apps inside OS X (IOW, you don't have to deal with the MS Explorer, task bar, etc - just the window and tools of your Vista application).SECURITY: sadly, because some idiots have nothing better to do, there will be attacks on Vista in the near future and some will be successful, that is guaranteed. Because every "digital delinquent" on earth is going to try and break it in some way, shape or form. There will be worms, trojan horses, all that stuff. The hope is that the number of those attacks that are successful will be fewer than with XP, 98, etc. I believe they WILL be fewer with Vista, but they will still be a concern. Vista has some holes that have already been exposed in programming circles. So IF YOU DO UPGRADE, don't relax and think you're safe from people trying to take over your computer, crash it or whatever. You're *not* safe. No Windows system will ever be truly safe unless it isolated from outside attacks (i.e. on a closed network where everything that goes in the machines is tightly controlled).
NEW TO COMPUTERS? For most purposes, you will want to at least consider getting a Mac, as the user experience is still preferable in my opinion to Vista and easier to learn. Apple is also using the fastest Intel processors available, so you're not giving up any speed or performance like in the old days. Things that bug me: Vista still requires a lot more time to drill down through dialog boxes and XP-like preferences, and is still not as intuitive from a user interaction point of view as OS X. Part of improving a computer interface is reducing its complexity, not just making it more attractive. Sadly, in some areas MS borrowed the attractive part of Apple's designs, but not the simplicity.
PS - some may wonder: will I be running Vista on my Mac Pro to get some of my work done? Yes. I will run both Vista and OS X in their latest incarnations, but both from the Mac to save on hardware expenses. Good luck and happy computing, Vista or otherwise!Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Full Version - Old Version OverviewWindowsVista Home Premium is the operating system for homes with advanced computer needs. It will help you use your laptop or desktop PC more effectively as well as enable you to enjoy new, exciting digital entertainment experiences - all with the benefit ofadded security and reliability.

Microsoft Windows Vista Business FULL VERSION ReviewWindows Vista is clearly better than Windows XP in a hundred little ways, from the search boxes to the sidebar. The new and improved Vista features are listed all over the place, so I won't go into the details. I will say, however, that they do make an improvement in everyday computer use.
On the other hand, Vista suffers a thousand little flaws. For one thing, iTunes isn't compatible yet. Then, NVidia doesn't have decent drivers yet. Firefox doesn't work with the Windows Media plugin yet. For some strange reason, whenever I save a file in Microsoft Visual Studio, I get impossible-to-delete temporary files in my working folder. Some piece of incompatible software is creating them. Is it Windows Live OneCare? Visual Studio? Tortoise SVN? Who knows? Oh, and did I mention that Vista crashes whenever it tries to come out of sleep mode? I could list more problems, but you get the picture. Vista is not really stable.
My advice is this: If you are building a new system, go ahead and install Vista. You will have a bumpy road, but it's better than buying XP now and upgrading later. Otherwise, wait about six months for Microsoft and the other software companies to get their act together. You have been warned.Microsoft Windows Vista Business FULL VERSION OverviewWindows Vista Business is the primary edition of Windows Vista for business desktop and mobile PCs. Microsoft Windows Vista Business UPGRADE ReviewI've just finished upgrading to Vista Business using the Upgrade DVD. During the upgrade from Windows XP pro, the upgrade failed. Because of the timing of the upgrade process, I was left with a non working machine. Every attempt I made to fix the broken upgrade failed as well. As I saw it, the only way to fix this was to install an clean version of the OS to get back to my data. Unfortunately I was wrong (I'll get to that later.) During the clean install, when I entered my product key I was informed that the key was only for upgrades, not clean installs. But, at this point, what could I do, the upgrade failed and my machine was dead. There was an option to not enter the product key at this point, and re-enter it after the OS was running. SO... I continued with the install. After that the install went quite smooth, Vista is up and running on my machine right now as I right this warning message. It looks cool, there are a few issues such as my bluetooth wireless drivers aren't available yet, but I knew about that in advance when I ran the upgrade adviser. BUT now for the BIG issue. When I attempted to use my valid product key to activate Windows Vista, I was informed that my KEY wasn't valid because I did a clean install. After spending 2 hours arguing with MS tech support, they basically told me this... I had to do a clean install of XP and then attempt to do the UPGRADE again!!! WTF!!! They expect me to spend another 8 hours (after I've already spend 5 hours to this point) putting XP back on just to ATTEMPT the upgrade again (which might fail again!??!!?) OR my other option is to spend $299 for the Full install version to avoid the 8 hours of wasted time. This is complete bull! I've been working with MS products for a very long time and every "upgrade" product in the past allowed you to do a clean install if you provided a valid key of a previous product during the clean install process. This product isn't ready for you! Please save yourself time and energy fixing issues that MS should have had worked out. DO NOT buy the UPGRADE DVD, because you are risking $200 on a possible upgrade failure, then will have to spend a lot more time OR another $300 to get another product key.

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic UPGRADE ReviewI was considering making the jump to Windows Vista Home from XP Media Edition until I looked more closely at what features it really had. Want Media Center for Vista Home because you have it on your XP machine? Well, that is found only on the Premium version. How about burning DVD's? That too is found only on the Premium version. Want the 3D aero environment highly touted for Vista? Vista Premium only. How about a Scheduled Backup for your files? Vista Premium. How about Windows Meeting Space to collaborate and share documents? You guessed it, that's found on Vista Premium too.
What Vista Home actually has (2 of 14 features) per Microsoft's website:
Most secure Windows ever
with Windows Defender and Windows Firewall (XP already has a built in firewall.....nothing new here)
Quickly find what you need
with Instant Search and Windows Internet Explorer 7 (you can download IE 7 for free)
If this comes pre-installed on a PC, great, but if you are considering buying this as an upgrade consider what are you really getting for your upgrade money?

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic UPGRADE OverviewWindows Vista Home Basic is designed to be easy to set up, to help people use their PCs securely and reliably, to help people stay better connected, and, like all of the editions of Windows Vista, to be compatible with the widest range of software, devices, and services that people use and trust. For those who simply want to use their PC for tasks such as surfing the Internet, corresponding with friends and family using email, or performing basic document creation and editing tasks, Windows Vista Home Basic delivers a safer, more reliable, and more effective computing environment.

Microsoft Vista is actually a huge improvement over XP to me, and I have been mostly happy with the merge. I enjoy the ease of use, and all of my software and devices have ran very nicely on it. My PC is only an Acer with AMD 5200 Dual Core, and a 512MB basic Nvidia graphics card and 2GB of memory. If your pc has at least 2GB of memory, and at least 128MB of dedicated graphics, Vista will run great with the full visual experience, 1GB works good as well just without the fancy visual effects. I love the built in Fax software with Ultimate, and the networking tools, so if you must have the business side of Vista, this is your best bet!!! Works great, and very enjoyable after adding a few of your own 3rd party software favorites.Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT)RED Upgrade with SP1 OverviewMore secure, making it better able to protect systems; Get more done…faster and easier; matches the current and future compatibility with software, peripherals, and services; Stay connected—in or out of the office

Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32-bit English 1 Pack DSP OEI DVD ReviewBUYER BEWARE ****SYSTEM BUILDER**** INSTALLATION DISK ONLY (Not for typical end user installation)
This should specify boldly in product details that this is a SYSTEM BUILDER PACK ONLY....... Do not buy this if you are planning to just install on a system that you purchased or a pre built system. I contacted customer service and they were not aware of it so I contacted Microsoft and Microsoft stated "return the disc to the company, you can not use it unless you are a system builder". Waited the shipping time and everything for this to install it on a family members machine and now we are stuck waiting again.
Amazon customer service was on the ball in terms of trying their best to get this resolved. They have managed to get me set up for an expedited refund and an expedited solution. I am crossing my fingers that this time it is what I needed.

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 - Full Version ReviewIf you're reading this. You're thinking of buying Windows XP home edition here are a few things to keep in mind.
First thing is, you might be able to get away with buying just the upgrade edition. The upgrade edition allows you to do a full install. It just asks you for the CD of a previous version of Windows. Also remember you can download service pack two from the Windows update web site. So no need to buy it integrated with XP.
These are what I consider the minimum system requirements:
256 MB of RAM. I have found is adequate more equals better.
500 MHz or higher will do.
7200 rpm hard drive will help a lot.
If you're running Windows millennium edition, or 98 upgrade now the stability is vastly improved. Gone are the blue screens of death.
Frequently asked question: is Windows XP Pro better than home edition?
Windows XP Pro has a more high-end networking features that most home users will never miss or would even know were missing. So for most users Windows home edition is fine. They both are based on the same code and are almost identical.
If you're thinking of upgrading from Windows 2000, I did, because I like the GUI interface better. But Windows XP is as stable as Windows 2000. So it's your call.
The plug-and-play ability of Windows XP is totally great! Windows XP will by default find most drivers for video card sound cards, network cards, etc. that is such a bonus gone in the days of having to search for CDs with drivers.
I recommend upgrading to Windows XP be it professional or home edition. It is a great operating system
Have some fun and get it doneMicrosoft Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 - Full Version OverviewWith Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2, you get safer browsing and communication, powerful security tools, and improved experiences. Packed with multimedia features, Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 aims to unlock the full potential of your personal computer. It also looks great, with rounded window corners, larger and more detailed icons, and a clean-look desktop.

For Web browsing, XP Home comes with Internet Explorer 6.0 and MSN Explorer. The most significant new feature for Internet users is the built-in firewall. A firewall protects against one of the most disturbing security risks, in which other users unknown to you might connect to your computer while it is online, reading private files or causing other damage. XP's built-in firewall is a simple affair, but it does prevent most types of unauthorized connections.

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Full Version with SP2 ReviewWindows XP Professional is perhaps the best version of Windows that Microsoft has released. It's rock-solid, well-supported, and easy to use. It's also ridiculously expensive, bloated, and the anti-piracy measures are nearly draconian (and woefully ineffective to boot).
What follows is a pretty lengthy breakdown. If you just want the executive summary, read no further than the following bullet-point list:
- If you don't have any special needs consider XP Home instead. If you truly need XP Professional, you'll know.
- If you don't really need Windows (in other words, if you're not a gamer or need to run an application for work that's strictly Windows-only), consider switching to a Mac. Or even Linux if you're a power user.
- Windows XP is a decent OS under the hood. But lingering security issues, price, and Microsoft's questionable behavior over the years should give you pause.
Now for the extended, in-depth review...
Pros:
- Built on the Windows 2000 codebase. It's not so prone to BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) and other random crashes as 95, 98, and Me. I still get crashes, but they're usually the fault of a particular app, and a single crash rarely brings down the entire system.
- Excellent hardware support. It's plug-and-pray no longer; it recognizes and automatically configures a wide range of hardware.
- Well-supported. Like it or not, Windows is the dominant OS. You won't find a greater selection of commercial software for any other operating system.
- More secure than previous Windows versions. With the introduction of Service Pack 2, Microsoft is finally doing something about the rise of adware with improvements to Internet Explorer 6, a better built-in firewall, and a one-stop Security Center.
- Easier networking. Service Pack 2's wireless networking tools are often better than the ones bundled with wireless networking hardware. It's also easier to share files over a LAN, especially in comparison to Windows 2000. But if you need Windows 2000's more fine-grained control, that's available to you as well.
Cons:
- Expensive. Microsoft's monopoly position basically lets them charge whatever they want. Sometimes (and if you're a good bargain hunter) it's cheaper to buy a used computer with Windows XP preinstalled than to buy a boxed retail version. It's out of control. More on this later.
- Bloated. And not just bloated, but hard to cut down. Applications like Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Media Player, Windows Messenger, and Movie Maker are bundled and do not have uninstallers. You'll need some technical expertise and quite a bit of free time to get rid of these apps.
- Still very insecure. Check Secunia or a similar security site, and you'll see that Windows XP and Internet Explorer are riddled with security holes. And many of the critical ones remain unpatched! Save yourself a lot of grief and use an alternative browser like Mozilla Firefox or Opera (but not ones that embed the IE engine like Maxthon).
- The new visual themes are an acquired taste. Some people like big and colorful. I'm not one of those people. Luckily, "Windows Classic" is still available. You'll get your traditional desktop and Start menu back, as well as a hefty performance increase.
- Activation. It's not as bad as you might have been led to believe, but it's still annoying. The process takes seconds over the internet, and you don't have to provide any personal information. But if you're in the habit of upgrading and swapping out hardware often, you might find yourself on the phone with Microsoft trying to prove that you're not doing anything illegal. Meanwhile, Windows piracy still runs rampant, especially in third-world countries where a genuine copy of Windows costs a month's wages or more. Hell, it cost me a week's wages here in the U.S. of A. for my copies. (The job market's not exactly laden with golden opportunities for recent college grads. But I digress.) Seriously Microsoft, drop the price. What you lose in the margins up front will be more than made up for by the decreased loss due to piracy.
Other considerations:
- Unless you have ancient hardware (by that I mean computers built before 1997), get away from Windows 9x or Me as soon as you can. Leave that crash-prone monstrosity of an OS behind.
- I'd say get away from Windows entirely if possible. This isn't a viable option for everyone. For gamers, there's no real good substitute for Windows short of a console. Sometimes you'll get Mac and Linux releases, but they're often released long after the Windows version and are not as well supported. Then there are those who need a Windows PC for work. Solutions like Virtual PC and VMware provide a Windows environment for Mac and Linux respectively, but they can be clunky, and you wind up having to get Windows anyway. And of course there are those that can't deal with the Mac way of doing things or can't be bothered with the endless tinkering that a Linux setup entails. But if you just need a computer that gets on the internet without fuss, and you're not beholden to Windows in any way, consider something like the newly-released Mac mini. Easy to use, easy on the eyes, easy on the wallet.
- Power users may want to consider giving Linux a spin. It's still got a way to go before it's a solid desktop OS, but it's getting better every day.
- If you're not a power user and/or don't need the advanced networking features, Remote Desktop, etc. (and really, really must have Windows), go with XP Home instead. All of the stability, most of the power, less of the fat. Cheaper too.
- If you're already using Windows 2000, XP Professional probably isn't a very compelling upgrade. You've already got a very mature, stable, not-too-bloated, well-supported desktop OS on your hands. Maybe the new network features (the better wireless tools in particular) are worth the upgrade and migration cost. I leave it to you to weigh the risks and benefits in your particular situation.
Thanks for reading!Microsoft Windows XP Professional Full Version with SP2 OverviewWith Windows XP Professional Edition with Service Pack 2, you get safer browsing and communication, powerful security tools, and improved experiences. Windows XP is the operating system release that unifies the Microsoft range, with all the desktop versions now built on the NT/2000 code base rather than the shakier foundation of Windows 95, 98, and Me. That makes XP a great upgrade for users of the now-obsolete 9x and Me line, but for those already on Windows 2000 Professional it is a closer call. Despite the similar name, there is no special synergy between Windows XP and Office XP, which works fine on Windows 2000.

For Web browsing, XP comes with Internet Explorer 6.0. The enhancements in IE 6.0 are mainly of interest to Web developers, and in any case Microsoft makes IE freely available to all Windows users. Although Java is not installed by default, it is not difficult to download a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Windows Messenger, originally a chat client, has evolved into a collaboration tool that allows for video conferencing and application sharing.

The XP user interface is not a radical departure from earlier versions of Windows, but there are a number of small changes that together add up to a significant improvement. The Start menu now automatically features the most frequently used programs at the top of the list, and you can add and remove shortcuts by right-clicking the icon and selecting Pin or Unpin from the pop-up menu. Windows online help is integrated into a Help and Support Center that works like an internal Web site, with searchable help, tutorials, and walk-throughs.

Windows XP Professional includes all the features of Windows XP Home, and adds support for dual processors, encryptable file systems, offline folders, the Remote Desktop as described above, and extra administration features that come into play when connected to a Windows server domain. XP is demanding on hardware, and it would be a mistake to install it on less than Microsoft's recommended minimum requirements. There is also activation to consider, a mildly annoying anti-piracy measure that requires you to obtain a code from Microsoft for full installation, and in the future if you reinstall or make major system changes.

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Upgrade - Old Version ReviewWow, I don't even know where to begin. Here's the horrifying details (so far)...
1. Installation. I heard the rumors about long installations. I can't tell you how long mine took because it finished sometime after I went to bed, about six hours after I had started.
2. Internet. This one almost brought me to tears. Vista kept setting up two network connections, one to my wireless network, and one to a mysterious "unidentified network." The troubleshooter told me Vista had two active connections and that was causing the problem. Simple right? Disable the "unidentified network" connection. Poof, there went my wireless with it. Enable my wireless, back comes the mystery network. I actually knocked out wireless to my entire house at one point in this circle of doom. Finally, as a stab in the dark, I manually disabled all network adapters on my machine except the wireless adapter. And that's why I'm able to write this review now...
3. Incompatibility. I knew there would be problems. Norton Ghost was good as gone, but I knew that. Then my antivirus turned out to be a no go. A few other applications would surely need upgrades. But ITUNES??? Come on! I could also list the games that used to run but no more, but this review is already getting long enough.
4. Hiding my stuff. I no longer own my My Music folder. I mean, Vista security TELLS me I'm the owner, but "permission is denied." I found a workaround on Microsoft's website "...sometimes you may lose access to your My Music folder during the upgrade." Oh that's lovely. By digging into the deep hidden folders per their instructions I found my music, and copied it to the desktop. At one point the file copy dialog box said "Moving files, 44,519 days remaining." I wish I was making that up. Fortunately Vista was over-estimating that a little.
5. New Features that don't work. I paid the extra dough and bought the premium version of Vista. The aero look is very cool. For about 3 minutes. Then I get a message saying "The desktop manager has stopped working." And I'm back to Vista Basic. That extra $50 may not have been money well spent.
6. The new Media Player won't play my newly rescued songs. It tells me it thinks many of my songs are on the I: drive. (I don't have an I: drive)
7. Things can get awful slow. My machine is four months old. It's dual-core, 2 Gig of memory, dual graphics cards, top of the line mobo. Under XP it flew. It wasn't broke. So I upgraded to Vista, you know, to break it.
Okay, that's enough. You get the idea. I had a few small XP gripes so I thought I'd try Vista. Bad mistake. Big ugly bad mistake. Vista may be great someday, but for me it's been 72 hours of hell.
At least I can uninstall, can't I... I can't? D'OH!!!
(And yes, I used the Vista Upgrade Advisor)Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Upgrade - Old Version OverviewWindows Vista Home Premium makes finding information, staying connected, and interacting with your PC easier and more secure. Using, organizing, and sharing photos, video, TV programs, and music becomes a part of your everyday life. With Windows Vista Home Premium, balancing your checkbook, doing homework, watching a movie, listening to music, or playing a game is a better and more enjoyable experience.

Microsoft Office Professional 2007 UPGRADE ReviewNormally I might wait to install a new software upgrade, but I just got a new laptop and thought it would be best to use Office 2007 with the new Vista operating system. I was wrong.
You would expect that a multi-billion dollar company like Microsoft could put out a powerful and bug-free piece of software. But after a month of using Office 2007, you get the distinct impression that this software is not ready for public release. Microsoft should be ashamed.
I don't know the root cause of my problems, but I have to stress that I am running a clean install of Office 2007 on Vista, so there shouldn't be any software conflicts or issues.
So what are my issues? The list is long:
-- My biggest concern is that MS Word constantly hangs and stalls. It can making editing a document very painful. I suspect the problem is when I put images or Visio diagrams into a document. But that is something the old MS Word was able to do without an issue. Oddly, if I have a colleague open the document and save it out in Word 2003, the problem goes away! What?! It's killing my productivity.
-- When ever I cut and paste from an old document, Word hangs for 15 to 20 seconds. And often the formatting and margins in my new document go haywire. I keep having to spend a ton of time fixing things. This never happened in the old Word. This is another time killer.
-- Every few days, Outlook 2007 starts telling me that it cannot display my email folders. Uh oh! I have to completely restart my computer to see my email again.
-- Outlook 2007 breaks many graphic emails that people send -- they look like a mess. It is because Outlook 2007 does NOT render HTML correctly since it uses the Word engine, not Internet Explorer to display email. I have no idea why Microsoft did this, but they have got to fix it.
-- Many of the issues in the old Word 2003 still haven't been fixed. If you place an image, it can often be hard to get it to appear correctly. Why can't they solve this one?
-- While most Office programs have the new ribbon interface (which I like), some programs like Visio 2007 do not. So you have to remember how to use two interfaces. Couldn't Microsoft find the time and money to update ALL its programs? Give me a break.
-- On a few occassions in Visio 2007, my files have failed to save correctly. At first I thought this must have been my fault, but it's happened to me a few times and can't be a coincidence. A few times I've gotten an error message and lost my work. Ug.
-- Word and Excel 2007 use a completely new file format. So anyone you send a document to has to have 2007 installed (which isn't likely the case). To get around this, you can save it down to a 2003 file format, but then you end up with two files on your hard drive -- one in the new format and one in the old format. What a pain! Also, there definitely seems to be an issue with Office 2007 opening older Office 2003 files. Could be the cause of many of my problems, but there is no way I can avoid using old files. They should have worked harder on compatibility.
There are good things about the new 2007. I do like the new interface design and the new features in Outlook 2007 are amazing for organizing tasks and sharing your calendar.
But I don't think it's fair that Microsoft released a product so full of serious, serious bugs that have cost me hours and hours of extra work. I didn't spend hundreds of dollars on a beta product and don't think the public should have to suffer. Surely they can afford to do better!
NEW ADDITION TO MY REVIEW:
Today I discovered that I can no longer paste Excel charts into Word like I used to. When I try, the chart goes in, but any bars/lines disappear.

Microsoft Outlook 2007 ReviewThe new version of Outlook is VERY similar to the previous version. Cosmetics are neater, but wholesale revamping of the user interface that took place in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint missed this version. Usability is good, and I hope that security is improved, but I see no "burning" need to upgrade to the new version.Microsoft Outlook 2007 OverviewMicrosoft Office Outlook 2007 provides an integrated solution for managing your time and information, connecting across boundaries, and remaining in control of the information that reaches you. By delivering innovations you can use to quickly search your communications, organize your work, and better share your information with others, this software keeps you connected and up to date, at work dealing with colleagues and customers, or at home corresponding with friends and family.
