Microsoft Windows XP Professional ReviewWindows XP is great but there is one thing you need to know: in order to use this product, you will be forced to contact Microsoft (by phone or via internet) in order to get an "activation code" after you have installed the software. If you don't do this, you will no longer be able to use this product after 30 days. In order to get this activation code, you will have to send Microsoft a code made up from the different pieces of hardware on your computer. You have no choice in this matter. They will then give you an this activation or "unlock" code in return. If you change the hardware on your computer beyond a Microsoft-specified amount, Windows XP will suspect that it is now installed on a different machine and will demand that you apply to Microsoft for another activation code before you can continue using it.
If their database shows that you have already "activated" this software before, they will demand a reason why you want another activation code. If they think you are trying to install the software on more than one machine, they can deny you the activation code, thereby rendering the software useless. The aim of this is to make sure that you buy one separate copy of Windows XP for each machine you own.
Be aware that, even after you have bought this software, Microsoft still has the ability to deny you the ability to use what you have paid for.Microsoft Windows XP Professional OverviewWindows XP is the operating system release that unifies the Microsoft range, with all the desktop versions now built on the NT/2000 code base rather than the shakier foundation of Windows 95, 98, and Me. That makes XP a great upgrade for users of the now-obsolete 9x and Me line, but for those already on Windows 2000 Professional it is a closer call. Despite the similar name, there is no special synergy between Windows XP and Office XP, which works fine on Windows 2000.
XP certainly looks different, with rounded window corners, larger and more detailed icons, and a clean-look desktop that on first installation shows only the taskbar and Recycle Bin. XP is also more customizable than earlier versions of Windows, and includes visual themes that let you change the whole appearance of Windows in an instant. That is the window-dressing, but underneath are some significant improvements. One of the most interesting is Remote Desktop. A standard XP feature, this uses technology from Microsoft Terminal Server to enable users to access their computer over any connection; for example, by dialing into the office from home. This is not just file access--this technology lets you run applications remotely as if you were sitting at your desk at work. This is mature technology, stable and carefully thought out. So, for example, you can print from a remote word processor to a local printer. A variation on the theme is Remote Assistance, where the user can allow a remote helper to view their desktop, or optionally gain control of the keyboard and mouse, in order to troubleshoot a problem.

Microsoft Windows Server Standard 2008 (English) - 1 Pack ReviewI almost got stuck with this. Thought I was purchasing a full blown Microsoft Boxed 2008 server. This was an OEM version. I did not understand at the time what that meant. It basically means when you put it on a server it stays there. If that server blows up good luck transfering your license. Microsoft licensing really blows in my opinion.Microsoft Windows Server Standard 2008 (English) - 1 Pack Overview

OEM WIN VISTA HOME PREM SP1 32BIT ENG 1P ReviewI bought this OEM version of Windows XP in order to install Windows on my Mac to use with Parallels, which lets you seamlessly run Mac and Windows simultaneously and drag and drop between the two OS's. DO NOT partition your Mac first with Bootcamp - Parallels does the whole Windows installation completely seamlessly and flawlessly. Just install Parallels first, then Parallels prompts you to insert the Windows installer. Since Parallels creates a whole new virtual partition which as far as Windows is concerned is a whole brand new virgin Windows computer, you can use this OEM installer for ***HALF THE PRICE*** of buying the whole new complete Windows OS. Both the Parallels and Windows installs worked perfectly without the slightest hiccup, and Windows and Mac run perfectly on my Mac with no problems whatsoever. This was a huge relief, because I was a Windows newbie and virgin and went into this operation with more than a little trepidation. I'm happy to report everything came out perfectly. I highly recommend Parallels, which lets you run both OS's simultaneously rather than having to install Windows via Bootcamp and then have to reboot the computer to run one or the other.OEM WIN VISTA HOME PREM SP1 32BIT ENG 1P Overview1 pack of Microsoft Vista Operating SystemHOME Premium on DVD with SP1 for OEM computers ONLY.

Windows Vista Home Basic with SP1 Upgrade ReviewI installed this over XP as part of a general upgrade; CPU, motherboard, more memory and a video card for my wife's PC (yes I am a tinkerer). Installed cleanly. In spite of being SP1 it screwed around for several days downloading and installing upgrades - a minor annoyance (with cable internet - would be ugly with dialup). Looks good, runs good, no crashes (although XP was pretty stable in my environment). Of the upgrades I added a new copy of Windows Office home and student ed so the thing is pretty clean these days. My wife didn't jump for joy at any of this but she's acting like she's pretty comfortable with it and now she uses it a lot (the whole thing is considerably faster) and that's as high a compliment as you get from that quarter. Yeah I hate that it's constantly asking permission (I'll get in and fix that shortly). I don't hate that it blocks popups. The final results were worth the trouble (there was not much)to me.Windows Vista Home Basic with SP1 Upgrade OverviewMicrosoft Windows Vista Home Basic 66G-02690 122

Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bit System Builder 1pk ReviewI bought this version because it was the best price and was in stock. The OEM version was easy to install. The 32 bit I feel was the best for drivers. It runs better than XP. Boots faster and is alot smarter. The learning curve has not been too bad not having seen Vista (glad I didn't) I would recommend it for Vista users to convert. Once the companies upgrade there software to better Accomodate Window 7, it will be even better. Vista driver seem to work well, as do some of the XP drivers. I ran the Beta (free) version before I made this decision.Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bit System Builder 1pk OverviewUpgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate. Microsoft Office XP Professional ReviewI gave Office XP a fair trial, and I have to say that this program *looks* good. The interface was slick, the program responsive (even with a Pentium III 450) and the crash recovery a godsend. It should be noted that the program did not play nice with programs by Adobe, however. .pdf creation macros caused Microsoft Word to crash each and every time I exited the program. Adobe DTP programs such as PageMaker and InDesign could not easily import files saved in Office XP, even though they are not substantially different from Office 2000 files.
These were the only problems, however. Removing the faulty macros solved the crash problem, and saving XP files as rtf files allowed me to import without losing any of the formatting. So, on the whole, very good.
However, is it worth the amount of money required to upgrade, let alone buy the full version? The answer is no. I saw no reason whatsoever to upgrade from Office 2000 SR-1a. XP's Product Activation was also a nuisance. Microsoft clearly did not price this upgrade for me, and so I can't purchase, nor really recommend this version.
If you want a good Office suite, and want a better deal, download StarOffice 5.2 from [...]. The program is free, and it's fully compatible with Office 2000.
Best, JamesMicrosoft Office XP Professional OverviewMicrosoft Office XP's empowering document design tools, integration of voice recognition functionality, and impressive network- and Web-based sourcing capabilities should be enough to convince those interested in saving time and consolidating effort to take the leap. In keeping with Microsoft's much-ballyhooed .NET strategy, Office XP introduces several features that utilize the vast infosphere inhabited by the 21st-century desk jockey. Smart tags beckon underneath recognized objects like misspellings or symbols, offering a stock quote here, a synonym there, or "Would anyone care to configure my auto-correction list?" The task pane looks similar to Microsoft Internet Explorer's Explorer Bar, and acts like an open tool chest pulled up alongside each application in the suite, providing readily configured searches for information or multimedia files. Putting up a team Web site that tracks projects and serves as an information hub requires only the use of one of the included templates, ready to be customized and uploaded to the server. The Send for Review feature further streamlines the collaborative process by allowing the sender to view revisions made by multiple parties within the framework of the original document. Outlook now features a color-coded calendar and easier meeting management, along with instant messaging and variable e-mail account access. All user system errors can be tracked globally, and then network security settings modified remotely while anti-virus and debugging IT resources are diverted accordingly.

Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32-bit English 1 Pack DSP OEI DVD ReviewBUYER BEWARE ****SYSTEM BUILDER**** INSTALLATION DISK ONLY (Not for typical end user installation)
This should specify boldly in product details that this is a SYSTEM BUILDER PACK ONLY....... Do not buy this if you are planning to just install on a system that you purchased or a pre built system. I contacted customer service and they were not aware of it so I contacted Microsoft and Microsoft stated "return the disc to the company, you can not use it unless you are a system builder". Waited the shipping time and everything for this to install it on a family members machine and now we are stuck waiting again.
Amazon customer service was on the ball in terms of trying their best to get this resolved. They have managed to get me set up for an expedited refund and an expedited solution. I am crossing my fingers that this time it is what I needed.

Windows 7 Professional SP1 32bit (Full) System Builder DVD 3 Pack ReviewThe three-pack kits are fine, but at this time (January 2012), if you order a DVD 3-Pack from Amazon Direct, you are likely to receive only one (1) of the units and licenses. After the first such mistake, I opted for a return and exchange (including a detailed explanation of the error with the return form) and received - yes, you guessed, - yet another single-unit shipment (at the triple unit price).
Microsoft has unfortunately put the same End Item PN: FQC-04696 on both the individual DVD slip covers and the 3-unit, 3-Pack carton.
Make sure you are getting a full, corrugated brown MS Carton with 3 units per box, NOT JUST an individual DVD in a white slip-cover with only 1 unit per box.
Amazon customer assistance was polite and efficient, but recommended I return both partial shipments for a refund and cancel my order altogether as they couldn't guarantee delivery of a 3-pack if I was to try the same vendor (Amazon Direct) again.
Particularly frustrating, as I had made two prior orders (same item, same vendor) with no problem.....

Windows Vista Business with SP1 Upgrade ReviewMicrosoft Vista Business came bundled with a Lenovo laptop. Various glitches prompted numerous calls to my Microsoft Certified IT expert. Most recently, the system would just lose contact with the Internet for unknown reasons, then just as mysteriously regain contact several days later. Sometimes a "route print" at the administrator command prompt would show two "0.0.0.0" route entries, and deletion of these would sometimes (but not always) remedy the problem. Anyway, my IT expert finally just took Vista off and installed XP. I'm guessing my final outlay on this headache will total $700, not to mention my time.
Absolutely avoid the Vista operating system. I loaded Linux Ubuntu on a spare machine while the laptop was in the shop, and got instant browser, email, and Microsoft compatible word processing and spreadsheet. No flash, just functionality.Windows Vista Business with SP1 Upgrade OverviewMicrosoft Windows Vista Business Service Pack 1 Upgrade

Parallels Desktop 7 Switch to Mac ReviewWith a LOT of skepticism, clenched jaw and faith in reviews, I opted to transfer my work laptop PC onto a new MacBook Pro 13". The bottom line is that the transfer and resulting virtual machine exceeded all expectations. With the exception of a few "shortcuts" that failed to remap to the Mac, everything works flawlessly. With respect to shortcuts, the effort of deleting and replacing the them added only a few short minutes to the task. Again, nothing short of miraculous software. I chose the more integrated approach, which added whatever litter was on my PC's desktop carried over to the Mac. This was remedied by simply dragging those files into a folder. I found that I prefer a full-screen view while doing PC-related stuff (more familiar with file locations, which are well organized, but different in Mac mode). Highly recommended. Would do it again without a second thought.Parallels Desktop 7 Switch to Mac Overview

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Full Version with SP2 ReviewWindows XP Professional is perhaps the best version of Windows that Microsoft has released. It's rock-solid, well-supported, and easy to use. It's also ridiculously expensive, bloated, and the anti-piracy measures are nearly draconian (and woefully ineffective to boot).
What follows is a pretty lengthy breakdown. If you just want the executive summary, read no further than the following bullet-point list:
- If you don't have any special needs consider XP Home instead. If you truly need XP Professional, you'll know.
- If you don't really need Windows (in other words, if you're not a gamer or need to run an application for work that's strictly Windows-only), consider switching to a Mac. Or even Linux if you're a power user.
- Windows XP is a decent OS under the hood. But lingering security issues, price, and Microsoft's questionable behavior over the years should give you pause.
Now for the extended, in-depth review...
Pros:
- Built on the Windows 2000 codebase. It's not so prone to BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) and other random crashes as 95, 98, and Me. I still get crashes, but they're usually the fault of a particular app, and a single crash rarely brings down the entire system.
- Excellent hardware support. It's plug-and-pray no longer; it recognizes and automatically configures a wide range of hardware.
- Well-supported. Like it or not, Windows is the dominant OS. You won't find a greater selection of commercial software for any other operating system.
- More secure than previous Windows versions. With the introduction of Service Pack 2, Microsoft is finally doing something about the rise of adware with improvements to Internet Explorer 6, a better built-in firewall, and a one-stop Security Center.
- Easier networking. Service Pack 2's wireless networking tools are often better than the ones bundled with wireless networking hardware. It's also easier to share files over a LAN, especially in comparison to Windows 2000. But if you need Windows 2000's more fine-grained control, that's available to you as well.
Cons:
- Expensive. Microsoft's monopoly position basically lets them charge whatever they want. Sometimes (and if you're a good bargain hunter) it's cheaper to buy a used computer with Windows XP preinstalled than to buy a boxed retail version. It's out of control. More on this later.
- Bloated. And not just bloated, but hard to cut down. Applications like Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Media Player, Windows Messenger, and Movie Maker are bundled and do not have uninstallers. You'll need some technical expertise and quite a bit of free time to get rid of these apps.
- Still very insecure. Check Secunia or a similar security site, and you'll see that Windows XP and Internet Explorer are riddled with security holes. And many of the critical ones remain unpatched! Save yourself a lot of grief and use an alternative browser like Mozilla Firefox or Opera (but not ones that embed the IE engine like Maxthon).
- The new visual themes are an acquired taste. Some people like big and colorful. I'm not one of those people. Luckily, "Windows Classic" is still available. You'll get your traditional desktop and Start menu back, as well as a hefty performance increase.
- Activation. It's not as bad as you might have been led to believe, but it's still annoying. The process takes seconds over the internet, and you don't have to provide any personal information. But if you're in the habit of upgrading and swapping out hardware often, you might find yourself on the phone with Microsoft trying to prove that you're not doing anything illegal. Meanwhile, Windows piracy still runs rampant, especially in third-world countries where a genuine copy of Windows costs a month's wages or more. Hell, it cost me a week's wages here in the U.S. of A. for my copies. (The job market's not exactly laden with golden opportunities for recent college grads. But I digress.) Seriously Microsoft, drop the price. What you lose in the margins up front will be more than made up for by the decreased loss due to piracy.
Other considerations:
- Unless you have ancient hardware (by that I mean computers built before 1997), get away from Windows 9x or Me as soon as you can. Leave that crash-prone monstrosity of an OS behind.
- I'd say get away from Windows entirely if possible. This isn't a viable option for everyone. For gamers, there's no real good substitute for Windows short of a console. Sometimes you'll get Mac and Linux releases, but they're often released long after the Windows version and are not as well supported. Then there are those who need a Windows PC for work. Solutions like Virtual PC and VMware provide a Windows environment for Mac and Linux respectively, but they can be clunky, and you wind up having to get Windows anyway. And of course there are those that can't deal with the Mac way of doing things or can't be bothered with the endless tinkering that a Linux setup entails. But if you just need a computer that gets on the internet without fuss, and you're not beholden to Windows in any way, consider something like the newly-released Mac mini. Easy to use, easy on the eyes, easy on the wallet.
- Power users may want to consider giving Linux a spin. It's still got a way to go before it's a solid desktop OS, but it's getting better every day.
- If you're not a power user and/or don't need the advanced networking features, Remote Desktop, etc. (and really, really must have Windows), go with XP Home instead. All of the stability, most of the power, less of the fat. Cheaper too.
- If you're already using Windows 2000, XP Professional probably isn't a very compelling upgrade. You've already got a very mature, stable, not-too-bloated, well-supported desktop OS on your hands. Maybe the new network features (the better wireless tools in particular) are worth the upgrade and migration cost. I leave it to you to weigh the risks and benefits in your particular situation.
Thanks for reading!Microsoft Windows XP Professional Full Version with SP2 OverviewWith Windows XP Professional Edition with Service Pack 2, you get safer browsing and communication, powerful security tools, and improved experiences. Windows XP is the operating system release that unifies the Microsoft range, with all the desktop versions now built on the NT/2000 code base rather than the shakier foundation of Windows 95, 98, and Me. That makes XP a great upgrade for users of the now-obsolete 9x and Me line, but for those already on Windows 2000 Professional it is a closer call. Despite the similar name, there is no special synergy between Windows XP and Office XP, which works fine on Windows 2000.

For Web browsing, XP comes with Internet Explorer 6.0. The enhancements in IE 6.0 are mainly of interest to Web developers, and in any case Microsoft makes IE freely available to all Windows users. Although Java is not installed by default, it is not difficult to download a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Windows Messenger, originally a chat client, has evolved into a collaboration tool that allows for video conferencing and application sharing.

The XP user interface is not a radical departure from earlier versions of Windows, but there are a number of small changes that together add up to a significant improvement. The Start menu now automatically features the most frequently used programs at the top of the list, and you can add and remove shortcuts by right-clicking the icon and selecting Pin or Unpin from the pop-up menu. Windows online help is integrated into a Help and Support Center that works like an internal Web site, with searchable help, tutorials, and walk-throughs.

Windows XP Professional includes all the features of Windows XP Home, and adds support for dual processors, encryptable file systems, offline folders, the Remote Desktop as described above, and extra administration features that come into play when connected to a Windows server domain. XP is demanding on hardware, and it would be a mistake to install it on less than Microsoft's recommended minimum requirements. There is also activation to consider, a mildly annoying anti-piracy measure that requires you to obtain a code from Microsoft for full installation, and in the future if you reinstall or make major system changes.

Microsoft Windows Vista Anytime Upgrade Pack with SP1 ReviewI just received my upgrade DVD today, only to discover that it only includes the 32-bit software. A small insert in the case gives a special URL (below) where you can go to order *free* alternate media. This allows you to get a copy of the upgrade on CD instead of DVD, or to get a 64-bit version of the upgrade.
I know what you're thinking...that you'll just order the alternate media now so that it will be ready to install once your upgrade DVD arrives with it's key. Sorry, you need your product key to order the 64-bit version. I went to the web page and entered my information, but it wouldn't process, so I had to call Microsoft directly. To my surprise, a real person (friendly and fluent in English) answered the phone immediately and was able to process my request. They are mailing me the 64-bit DVD which I was told would arrive within 3-10 business days. He explained that the new product keys being issued are not yet in their online system, so they have to be processed via phone.
I was not charged for the media, or for shipping.
[...]
If you're reading this, you probably know whether you need the upgrade or not, just make sure you allow yourself some extra time if you're currently running a 64-bit version of Vista Home Premium.
I'm giving this 4 stars. Would have been 5 stars if the DVD had included 64-bit versions. Microsoft UPG WINDOWS ANYTIME/W7 STARTERTO HOME PREM UPG (Computer / Software) ReviewI purchased a Toshiba netbook with Windows 7 starter and it felt like I purchased a car with no seats. This was the first time I purchased a computer and was disappointed that they sent a stripped out operating system. After I installed the upgrade, I was not impressed: what has Microsoft been doing for the last ten years? They're selling cheap, stripped down versions of their software, so they can make money on the upgrades. Icons and graphics are large and the layout is inefficient. On a small netbook with a limited screen size this is a nuisance. Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Upgrade - Old Version ReviewLet me tell you Microsoft has done something right finally. Windows 2000 has the stability of NT and the compatability of 98(well almost). I have it running for a week(I had advanced copy) so far and there hasn't been a crash nor a blue screen of death like in Windows 98 SE. The basic requirement I think is a lot of ram, 64+ is fine but I think 128 is good and 256 the optimal. Windows 2000 Professional is easy to use, it looks just like Windows 98 except underneath all of it, it's the NT kernel, which means stability. Windows 2000 has gotten rid of DOS(almost) there is very little dos support and you may not be able to play certain legacy games. The good thing is that companies are writing drivers so that there is a lot of compatability with new things. Basically everything you have in Win98 can probably run in Win2000. There is a program you can download at Microsoft.com to check if there are any compatability issues. The fact that Microsoft must first approve software drivers before it is made available to the public is another boon. I hope this has helped you! Windows 2000 is really great compared to Win98 or 95!Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Upgrade - Old Version OverviewFull Product Built on NT Technology Windows 2000 Professional offers rock-solid reliability and improved manageability that simplify desktop management. Reliability improvements in Windows 2000 Professional make it even more stable than Windows NT Workstation. Windows 98: Second Edition ReviewI don't buy 'bleeding-edge' operating systems and softwares anymore unless they've been out on the market for at least 3 months. Historically Microsoft has been so eager to make sales that most of their products have been released half-baked & the customer winds up risking invaluable data by installing them, wasting hours of time diagnosing problems that can't be fixed by an end user, and investing a significant amount of money in hemorroidal ointments. The 2nd Edition of Win98 is what the 1st Edition of Win98 should have been (in fact, it's what the 1st Edition of Win95 should have been). The 1st Edition of Win98 was garbage; a lot of hype, a lot of stuff most people remove once installed, and a total pig on system resources. This 2nd Edition is stable enough to risk upgrading from Win95 for production and home stations and has enough fixes in it to warrant its price. One recommendation: if you can avoid it, don't buy the Win98 2nd Edition Upgrade as it's buggier than Win98 1st Edition. Install Win98 2nd Edition from scratch. I know the Win98 2nd Edition 'Upgrade' is cheaper. There's a reason for it, people.Windows 98: Second Edition OverviewMicrosoft Windows 98 Second Edition operating system will enhance your productivity and redefine your PC`s possibilities, with full Internet integration, optimal performance, and support for the latest entertainment and accessory options. You will be amazed at all you can do. Windows 98 SE is a hard to find, reliable operating system that does not require the system resources of today's OS's. This program is for computers without Windows operating system. Part Number 730-00847.
