Windows Vista Ultimate with SP1 ReviewMicrosoft's latest operating system Vista, replaces Windows XP.
Vista comes in 5 different versions: 2 for businesses (Business and Enterprise) and 3 for home use (Basic, Premium, and Ultimate). The Basic addition is a really stripped down version that is intended to help keep the price of new lower end PCs down. The Premium version has almost all of the same features of Ultimate except for 4 major applications. These are:
Windows PC Backup - an image based backup program for restoring everything on your computer in the case of a hard disk failure.
Windows Fax and Scanning - an app that integrates scanning and faxing (you need a scanner and a fax modem).
Remote Desktop Connection -This lets someone else work remotely on your computer (or you work on theirs). RDC is used in businesses for Helpdesk techs to diagnose or fix software problems without running to the user's computer.
Bitlocker Encryption - This encrypts the data on your hard drive so that if someone steals your computer or drive, they can't read the data. This can be a very desirable feature if you have a laptop with business data on it. In Healthcare and Finance, not encrypting data can end up costing a company a lot of money and bad publicity.
If you don't need any of the above, I'd recommend you go with Premium and save some money.
Vista has better graphics and more integration with new multimedia devices (such as iPods, MP3 players, digital cameras, etc). The new look and feel is somewhere between XP and a Mac.
The one thing it doesn't do is recommend you stay with XP. If you want the best performance from your Pentium or Celeron based computer, stay with XP. Vista is slower than XP! To get the speed , you need lots of memory (2-4GB) and a dual or quad core processor. Also Vista will disable certain features (like screen transparency, called Aero) to try to keep the performance up.
Installing Vista is where Microsoft got it right. It installs in about half the time it took me to install XP. When it couldn't find drivers, Vista used generic drivers to get the system running.
I've been running different versions of Vista for about a year. I have yet to get a complete system lockup (blue screen). It`s very stable. But it can also be annoying. Whenever you go to do things, you get message boxes asking you if it's OK to do it. Then it might tell you that an administrator has to do it (even though you are an administrator account). It drives you nuts. However, it's easy to turn off. Go to the Help menu and search for "Turn off UAC" (User Access Control). There's a checkbox you uncheck to disable UAC. If you have multiple users set up on your computer, you need to do it for each one.
I like Vista, but in my opinion I wouldn't upgrade an existing computer unless I had a compelling reason (like needing encryption). The cost of the Vista upgrade plus any hardware upgrades could reach the cost of a low end dual core computer that is made for Vista. However, when I buy a new computer I would definitely get Vista.

Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT)RED Upgrade with SP1 ReviewEven though this version of Windows Vista Ultimate is clearly a costmetic edition, it sure offer's a nice visual touch. I was happy to grab this eddition because of the donation Microsoft gives, but also because of the nice beautiful RED it entraps you in. Microsoft Vista is actually a huge improvement over XP to me, and I have been mostly happy with the merge. I enjoy the ease of use, and all of my software and devices have ran very nicely on it. My PC is only an Acer with AMD 5200 Dual Core, and a 512MB basic Nvidia graphics card and 2GB of memory. If your pc has at least 2GB of memory, and at least 128MB of dedicated graphics, Vista will run great with the full visual experience, 1GB works good as well just without the fancy visual effects. I love the built in Fax software with Ultimate, and the networking tools, so if you must have the business side of Vista, this is your best bet!!! Works great, and very enjoyable after adding a few of your own 3rd party software favorites.Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT)RED Upgrade with SP1 OverviewMore secure, making it better able to protect systems; Get more done…faster and easier; matches the current and future compatibility with software, peripherals, and services; Stay connected—in or out of the office

Windows 7 Professional SP1 32bit (Full) System Builder DVD 3 Pack ReviewThe three-pack kits are fine, but at this time (January 2012), if you order a DVD 3-Pack from Amazon Direct, you are likely to receive only one (1) of the units and licenses. After the first such mistake, I opted for a return and exchange (including a detailed explanation of the error with the return form) and received - yes, you guessed, - yet another single-unit shipment (at the triple unit price).
Microsoft has unfortunately put the same End Item PN: FQC-04696 on both the individual DVD slip covers and the 3-unit, 3-Pack carton.
Make sure you are getting a full, corrugated brown MS Carton with 3 units per box, NOT JUST an individual DVD in a white slip-cover with only 1 unit per box.
Amazon customer assistance was polite and efficient, but recommended I return both partial shipments for a refund and cancel my order altogether as they couldn't guarantee delivery of a 3-pack if I was to try the same vendor (Amazon Direct) again.
Particularly frustrating, as I had made two prior orders (same item, same vendor) with no problem.....

Microsoft Windows Vista Anytime Upgrade Pack with SP1 ReviewI just received my upgrade DVD today, only to discover that it only includes the 32-bit software. A small insert in the case gives a special URL (below) where you can go to order *free* alternate media. This allows you to get a copy of the upgrade on CD instead of DVD, or to get a 64-bit version of the upgrade.
I know what you're thinking...that you'll just order the alternate media now so that it will be ready to install once your upgrade DVD arrives with it's key. Sorry, you need your product key to order the 64-bit version. I went to the web page and entered my information, but it wouldn't process, so I had to call Microsoft directly. To my surprise, a real person (friendly and fluent in English) answered the phone immediately and was able to process my request. They are mailing me the 64-bit DVD which I was told would arrive within 3-10 business days. He explained that the new product keys being issued are not yet in their online system, so they have to be processed via phone.
I was not charged for the media, or for shipping.
[...]
If you're reading this, you probably know whether you need the upgrade or not, just make sure you allow yourself some extra time if you're currently running a 64-bit version of Vista Home Premium.
I'm giving this 4 stars. Would have been 5 stars if the DVD had included 64-bit versions. Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 UPGRADE ReviewThe new ribbon design is supposed to make it easier to learn and use. It may be for some new users but for experienced users, it isn't. This version takes away some critical nuts & bolts customization features and many tasks now take longer to perform. This is not due to the learning curve, it is the inherent nature of the way the ribbon works. Once you are familiar with the program, nothing is faster than the old menu structure. If Microsoft added an option to allow users to choose between menus and ribbons, it would be the best of both worlds, satisfying the needs of both new and experienced users. The new version does not run macros as fast however. My recommedation for existing users: keep Office 2003 for as long as you can and consider going to Open Office when Microsoft no longer supports 2003 (unless they restore the functionality in a newer release of 2007).Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 UPGRADE OverviewMicrosoft Office Ultimate 2007 provides people at home or work with a comprehensive set of tools that helps them gather and consolidate virtually any type of information, find what they are looking for quickly, and easily share information with others ac

It is licensed ONLY to be sold for use with NEW computer equipment (primarily for self-builders). You cannot upgrade an existing Vista computer with this pack unless you completely reformat your hard drive and re-install EVERYTHING. Win 7 has been reviewed in other areas, and I gave it four stars in a full review, but wanted to warn customers about being SURE they are purchasing what they expect with this edition.Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit System Builder 1pk OverviewUpgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate. Be sure to check the expanded list of extended features in Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate. System requirements vary for each edition of Windows 7 because some features might require special hardware.

2. See if your PC has what it takes to run Windows 7 In general, if your PC can run Windows Vista it can run Windows 7. To make sure, download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to do a quick check. If you want certain features, such as HomeGroup or Windows Media Center, check to see if your PC has the hardware that's needed.

3. Check which operating system your PC is currently running How you make the move to Windows 7 depends on your current operating system.

Windows Vista The transition to Windows 7 should be pretty smooth, although you may need to update your system to the latest service pack first.
Windows XP (or any other operating system) We recommend that you experience Windows 7 on a new PC. While we don't recommend it, you can opt to upgrade your current PC from Windows XP or another operating system to Windows 7. We recommend that you get help with this process from your local computer service provider. Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate ReviewLet me preface this review with my qualifications so that you may understand the extent I've gone to with operating systems to end up proudly claiming, "I'm a PC."
I use Linux (RedHat) at work, I've tried Ubuntu and Lycoris long before it, I've tried Debian and Slackware and however many other flavors of *nix in the past just to say I tried them. I've messed with BeOS (Zeta development was an exciting time), I've played with Mac OS X on numerous occasions (beautiful OS), and I've tried countless obscure operating systems that I doubt even 1% of those reading this would know about (and trust me; there's a reason for you not knowing about them, lol). Why have I messed with them all? Because I enjoy operating systems and I find them to be amazing achievements. There's no denying that Mac OS X is a beautiful OS that performs quite well within the structured hardware environment Apple has created. Linux is hella useful on an enterprise level (though Windows Server is easily comparable these days) and even home flavors of Linux have become quite nice (Ubuntu)! The fact of the matter is that I'm partial to Windows through my experiences with having tried just about every flavor of every OS out there over the past 10 years or so. I used to collect beta versions of operating systems (not just Windows, but others as well), so I've not only tried the final products, but I've also gained appreciation for them by seeing them and playing with them through their development cycles. Where Windows is concerned, at one point or another, I've instally just about every build of every version currently out there (and trust me, there are TONS of builds - alpha and beta bits from every version of Windows, including obscure bits like Windows Neptune). I've ridden the roller coaster through the highs (Windows 95, 98, 2000, XP, and now 7) and lows (Windows ME, Windows Vista's initial release) and I couldn't be happier that I've stuck it out.
Enter Windows 7.
Windows 7 is amazing. There is no other way to put it. It's being hyped as, "Vista done right," or something of that nature. Well, Windows 7 is soooo much more than that. True, the user interface may resemble Windows Vistas, but only at first glance. The single-most revolutionary aspect of Windows 7 is the new task bar. It has provided so much additional functionality that you would never know you wanted (or needed). The ability to pin tasks, the ability to move items around on the task bar, the privacy of not having titles of your windows down in the task bar for anyone to see, the new interactive thumbnail previews, the new placement of the show desktop button... I could go on. It may take you a bit to get used to the new task bar, but trust me... you will and you will absolutely come to love it. Going back to anything less just won't feel right.
Next on the docket is HomeGroups. Look, file sharing between home computers has never been easier. NEVER. I have Windows 7 on my desktop and on my laptop. The desktop, I recently built, so while awaiting my wireless card for it, I wanted to see if I could tether my laptop's internet connection. In the past, it wasn't exactly difficult to set it up, but it was much more involved than it is now. All you need is a regular ethernet cable, connent one end to your laptop and the other to your desktop, give permissions to share (made simple through HomeGroups) and voila! I can use the internet on my desktop via my laptop's internet connection. And not only that, I was able to set up the laptop and desktop to share files between one another via the same cable... and it was incredibly simple! I won't walk through the steps here since this review is already getting a bit lengthy, but the long and the short of it is that file and resource sharing between Windows 7 computers is RIDICULOUSLY intuitive.
Lastly, are you still on XP? Are you one of those business who decided way back when that you would just skip Vista and roll out Windows 7? Well, guess what? Windows 7 is here and it's time you make good on your decision. As the title to my review implies, Windows 7 bests both Vista and XP. There is no longer any excuse for you to stick with XP when Windows 7 performs EVEN BETTER. The only learning curve for XP users will be getting used to the new user interface and the change in location of certain files/folders (which admittedly irked me at first, but those changes came about in Vista, so I've been long used to them). Bite that bullet. It's worth it, trust me. Oh, and cost? Windows 7 is worth its weight in gold. It's an operating system. Think about everything it does for you, all the applications it allows you to run, the tasks it allows you to perform... in the grand scheme of things, the cost of Windows is one of the best investments you can make for yourself, so go ahead and treat yourself to Windows 7. Seriously. Don't buy into the stupid Mac hype videos of, "more of the same" and pay no mind to the Microsoft commercials where people say Windows 7 was their idea. Go try it for yourself. Download a free evaluation copy, install it, and give it a whirl. See for yourself.
Since Amazon removes links from posts now, search Google for Windows 7 Enterprise 90-Day Evaluation. You will need a Windows Live ID and though it's an evaluation of Windows 7 Enterprise, it looks and feels like every other SKU.

I thought about placing this review on all the SKUs of Windows 7, but since I use Ultimate on a regular basis and not the other SKUs, I think it's only appropriate to leave it here, as-is. Microsoft Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade ReviewI give this product 4 stars. 5 Stars for the quality of features unlocked and less 1 star for the hoops and hurdles involved in getting the Win 7 XP mode to be fully functioning.
Well, if you were previously like me, having a Win 7 Home Premium O/S, hesistant about spending an extra US$129.99 (as at the time of writing) for an O/S upgrade, there are a couple of things you might want to know before taking the plunge.
My Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q898 laptop (also bought from Amazon) came pre-installed with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. Unless you require practical features such as Bitlocker, XP Mode and the ability to use other languages for your O/S, the Ultimate edition is an overkill for the typical consumer. Well, as for "intangible" benefits, running Win 7 Ultimate comes with bragging rights too... ;) hee hee
This product will only upgrade Win 7 Home Premium 32 Bit/64 Bit to Win 7 Ultimate 32Bit/64Bit respectively. It will not work with any other combination of OSes. For e.g., if you currently have Win 7 HP 32 Bit, you will only get Win 7 Ultimate 32 Bit, NOT Win 7 Ultimate 64 Bit. Another e.g., if you have Win 7 Starter, Win XP (any variant) or Vista (any variant), this product will not work.
This product does not come with any discs, neither DVD nor CD. You are actually purchasing a serial-number printed onto a little card. The card itself is enclosed in a plastic box the size of one's palm. The plastic box is itself wrapped by a cardboard sleeve. This is what one would expect to physically receive from purchasing this product.
On my system,it only took 5 mins to perform the upgrade. I attribute this to the SSD boot drive on my system. MS states that the upgrade will take 10mins. I reckon the other extra 5 mins is required for conventional systems which boot up from a non-SSD HDD. This is because your system needs to reboot a couple of times after the upgrade is performed.
The actual upgrade from Home Premium to Ultimate is the easy (as a,b,c) part. All you have to do is to follow a couple of instructions printed on the other side of the serial number card and key in the said number. You will unlock the Bitlocker and multiple languages features this way.
The latter requires an additional optional download for your choice of extra language packs from MS Windows Update.
Need to spell "gravlaks" or "krabbelag" in Norwegian? Well, now you know what's been missing from your current OS installation. ;)
However, getting the XP mode upgrade feature requires one to be more IT savy. Firstly, your processor must support Intel virtualization technology. You must also enable this in your BIOS. Next, you have to download 3 other files (of which 1 was and still is 500mb!!! in size) from MS Windows Update website. Getting the XP mode to work after you've done all the above requires one to Google for even more detailed instructions. So, be prepared to jump through a couple of hoops before you can actually run your older (non Win 7) programs under XP mode.
HDD Considerations:
Keying in the upgrade key will require an additional 10 GB of space as extra features are unlocked.
Installing the XP mode requires an additional 1 GB of HD space.
Actually using the XP mode may require up to an additional 15GB space.
So if you cannot spare an extra 26GB of space on your HDD, you might have to reconsider purchasing this upgrade.
Cost Savings:
Amazon sells this for US$10 less than that at MS' online store. With super saver shipping thrown in, what are you waiting for?
After reading all the above details, I'm sure that you can now appreciate why I've chosen the "(ALMOST) As Easy as A, B, C" title for the name of my review. :)
P.S. Norwegian "gravlaks" or "krabbelag" are not included. :)Microsoft Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade OverviewIf you want more features than you currently have in your existing edition of Windows 7, you can upgrade to another edition using Windows Anytime Upgrade.
