Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade Additional License Pack - 1 PC ReviewMicrosoft has many enemies. That's what happens when you are #1 and many below you wish they could be at the top.
Vista is a solid product. It was not as solid the day it was released, but what is? It's now only been a few months and the updates that apply the moment you install or upgrade to Vista provide you with a smooth experience.
Is the interface different? Oh yea. Is it bad? Is it slow? No. It's fine. Vista runs only SLIGHTLY slower on an older PC with a Pentium III chip or older but why wouldn't you expect that? You can't get more features AND more power and expect a faster machine when your hardware is getting along in the years.
In addition, if you simply don't understand the nature of Vista, then you haven't yet read Greg Perry's "Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows Vista All in One" (Amazon Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows Vista All in One (Sams Teach Yourself)) and frankly, this is hands-down the best way for a newcomer - even if you are or are not comfortable with XP - to master EVERYthing you REALLY need to know about Vista.
Software is not always obvious. That does not mean it's bad or difficult to use or requires a huge learning curve. Once you get Vista, beg or borrow or buy "Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows Vista All in One" and you will be ready to become a MASTER at the product. I went through what YOU are going through and I know most Vista books and sites DO NOT give you what you need to make this product work well FOR YOU. This book does and I've read all the top-selling Vista books.
Now I don't care if you get "Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows Vista All in One" or not, although you should, but you need to stop listening to the hype of those who have axes to grind with Microsoft. If you want to move FORWARD with your computer you need to have the juice needed which means a moderately recent PC and you need Vista.
The number one reason for getting Ultimate and not a lower Vista product is the BitLocker encryption technology and the ability to make a ghosted image of your disk drive that Vista can restore. If you've used Symantec's DriveImage or Ghost products then you know these alone can run you more than $50. It's thrown in with Vista Ultimate and you'll REALLY use these tools a lot.

Windows Vista Home Prem English Upgrade DVD Retail Tech Sku ReviewI had a big problem with my computer and had no disk.
I bought this disk set and was able to have a smooth running system once again, I especially like the service pack 1,2, disk.
I had to install Vista before and it took 6 hours just to get the service packs back on, by using this disk it only took 2 hours, much faster!
These disks do not have a registration code so you must have one of your own because it will ask.
I installed Vista 64 Bit Premium once again on my computer and not one complaint.
Comes with three disks: 32, and 64 Bit, and a service pack disk, very nice.Windows Vista Home Prem English Upgrade DVD Retail Tech Sku Overview

Microsoft Office Excel 2007 Version Upgrade ReviewWe use Excel for some in-house data entry and processing. Much of this was automated using VBA, which was programmed in previous versions of Excel. It was decided that we would go ahead and upgrade the machine used for this function to the newest version of Excel, so it would be "future proofed" for some time to come. Well, that was a mistake.
Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that Microsoft would have changed so much in Excel, that the VBA macros would effectively be destroyed. Programs that use to take 2-5 seconds to run, now take minutes. It is a complete waste. I will have to spend many hours trying to figure out why the VBA code no longer functions as it did in previous versions of Excel.Microsoft Office Excel 2007 Version Upgrade OverviewMicrosoft Excel 2007 Version UpgradeWin32 English CD

Microsoft Windows Vista Business 32-bit for System Builders ReviewMicrosoft Windows Vista Business 32-bit for System Builders [DVD] Software makers, bless their little "off-the-shelf-selves" do really try to make things better and after working with this on a considerable number of builds over the last 18 months, it is pretty good. Make sure that you have enough band-width to download 45 updates to start with. Do not install production programs until it is updated it self. It will still need anti-virus protection. I would say run from upgrades and only make a clean install on a crip new machine assembled with Vista products in mind. For future upgrades, remember 64 bit is coming. While we hate to say good bye to good old XP It is time. Hope this helps.Microsoft Windows Vista Business 32-bit for System Builders Overview

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit for System Builders Reviewthere's no reason not to get a Vista box. It's fairly stable, but not without it's bugs. In the 2 weeks I've been using it, I would say it runs into more problems than XP. But recovering from those pitfalls is smoother than XP. On the whole, it's a wash as an upgrade.
If you have a stable XP box that meets your needs, there's no compelling reason to make the switch. The software is on the pricey side, but the expense is not limited to that alone. To get the most from the new bells and whistles of the Premium edition, you'll probably need to upgrade some hardware for the new Aero graphic interface.
Some of Aero is nice. The sidebar gadgets are nifty, as is the flip between windows feature. OTOH, the transparent title bars get old after a few days and it locks you into a default lilac color scheme for the menubars and whatnot. You can revert to a classic window layout with complete control over the appearance, but it takes away Aero's nicer features when you do. I'd much prefer it if I could keep the sidebar and window flip, without being tied to Aero's window appearance. Maybe they'll fix this annoyance in a future upgrade, then again, maybe they won't.
By far, the biggest annoyance with this OS is the security 'feature' designed to protect your computer from - you. Sometimes it seems you click more warning and approval boxes than you do just using the computer. You can disable this completely - at a price. It can cause some software - such as Adobe Acrobat to not install. Like with the Aero feature, it's all or nothing. There are no in between settings. Switching back and forth between the settings also carries a price. After the required reboot, many personal settings, passwords, cookies, etc are gone. The thing to do is to set up a user account with each setting and switch back and forth as needed. Again, maybe they will fix this aggravation in a future upgrade.
Sooner or later, all PC users will be using this OS. It's inescapable and we all know it. That said, there is nothing about Vista Home Premium that should make you feel any need to rush into it.Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit for System Builders Overview

win Vista Ultimate 64-bit English 1pk ReviewFirst off, this is an OEM software. That means it is intended to be installed on a new computer build NOT upgrade an existing copy of Windows. It is possible to install it on an existing computer by formatting an existing or new hard drive, but that would violate the license for this particular incarnation of Vista. If you want to install it on an existing computer, buy a full retail copy, or an upgrade copy.
I love Vista 64-bit. It is fast, easy to use, and the best Windows to date. Anyone who is still ripping Vista at this point doesn't own Vista, or is an inexperienced computer user, or a Mac fan that just wants to pour oil on a fire. Vista, the much belated and maligned 6th incarnation of the Windows operating system had real problems a year ago. Almost all of those problems have been fixed. Some of what users describe as problems are in fact less a problem with Vista than they are with computer buyer's perceptions and expectations.
So why is Vista beat up all the time? The most frequent complaint I hear is that it is a 'memory hog.' Honestly, this is a perception, not a reality. Vista does require more ran than XP, as XP required more than the previous windows, etc., etc. The reality is that RAM has gotten remarkably cheap, and using RAM liberally is a GOOD THING. The bottle neck in computing has been 4GB of ram on all 32-bit systems, but even with 4GB (3-3.5GB accessible to the system) almost no one will use all of the ram. With the 64-bit version, it is possible to run 8Gb of ram on a decent motherboard, and it is also possible to buy 8gb of RAM for $150! Why, in these days of super inexpensive RAM, don't those who feel Vista is too slow, just buy more? Honestly?
Another complaint is that drivers don't work or are not available for a particular software or hardware. There was a lot of truth to that a year ago. Now, after service pack 1, and over months of running Vista 64-bit exclusively, I can say that I have zero, yes zero, driver issues. Everything runs like a champ. I should note that I have a high end gaming computer, and have a lot of software installed. To not have a single driver issue is amazing, and something I could not say about XP one year into it's release.
If you know about computers, and are ready to make the switch to Vista, there has never been a better time. Most of the kinks are worked out, and while I can't promise you won't have any issues with drivers, it's getting less likely by the day. Programmers are catching on that Vista is not just going to disappear and everyone go back to XP, and that waiting for the next Windows will not put any money in their wallets, and have started to produce software written for Vista. Hardware manufacturers are also getting a clue and releasing solid Vista and Vista 64-bit drivers for their devices.
Frankly, this is the most powerful windows yet. 64-bit computing is hitting it's stride, and in another year or so, we'll all be looking back at 32-bit with the same derision as when the transition was made from 16 to 32 bit computers. 32 bit's days are numbered. It's time to move on.
win Vista Ultimate 64-bit English 1pk OverviewThis OEM software is intended for system builders only and cannot be transferred to another PC once it is installed. The purchaser of this software is required to comply with the terms of the System Builder license, including the responsibility of providing all end-user support for the software.

Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit for System Builders ReviewThis version of Windows Vista is the OEM version, which means that it does not come with a box or a manual, just a "Quick Install" guide. This is the FULL version of Vista but another thing that it is lacking is support from Microsoft. Because this version is intended for (as the title suggests) system builders, whoever that may be, they are the people who are supposed to provide the End User Support not Microsoft. It does, however, still include Windows Update so there do not think that you will not be getting updates from Microsoft, because you do. But if you are building a computer for your grandmother, and she BSOD's Vista, its up to you to fix it; Not Microsoft. Another difference between this version and the full 400 $ version is that this version only comes with the 32 Bit version of Windows Vista, but the full version comes with both the 32 and 64 Bit versions. So if you are pretty technology Savvy and you do not need Microsoft's support and you know what type of processor (64 or 32 bit) then the OEM version is the version for you.Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit for System Builders Overview

Windows Vista Ultimate with SP1 ReviewMicrosoft's latest operating system Vista, replaces Windows XP.
Vista comes in 5 different versions: 2 for businesses (Business and Enterprise) and 3 for home use (Basic, Premium, and Ultimate). The Basic addition is a really stripped down version that is intended to help keep the price of new lower end PCs down. The Premium version has almost all of the same features of Ultimate except for 4 major applications. These are:
Windows PC Backup - an image based backup program for restoring everything on your computer in the case of a hard disk failure.
Windows Fax and Scanning - an app that integrates scanning and faxing (you need a scanner and a fax modem).
Remote Desktop Connection -This lets someone else work remotely on your computer (or you work on theirs). RDC is used in businesses for Helpdesk techs to diagnose or fix software problems without running to the user's computer.
Bitlocker Encryption - This encrypts the data on your hard drive so that if someone steals your computer or drive, they can't read the data. This can be a very desirable feature if you have a laptop with business data on it. In Healthcare and Finance, not encrypting data can end up costing a company a lot of money and bad publicity.
If you don't need any of the above, I'd recommend you go with Premium and save some money.
Vista has better graphics and more integration with new multimedia devices (such as iPods, MP3 players, digital cameras, etc). The new look and feel is somewhere between XP and a Mac.
The one thing it doesn't do is recommend you stay with XP. If you want the best performance from your Pentium or Celeron based computer, stay with XP. Vista is slower than XP! To get the speed , you need lots of memory (2-4GB) and a dual or quad core processor. Also Vista will disable certain features (like screen transparency, called Aero) to try to keep the performance up.
Installing Vista is where Microsoft got it right. It installs in about half the time it took me to install XP. When it couldn't find drivers, Vista used generic drivers to get the system running.
I've been running different versions of Vista for about a year. I have yet to get a complete system lockup (blue screen). It`s very stable. But it can also be annoying. Whenever you go to do things, you get message boxes asking you if it's OK to do it. Then it might tell you that an administrator has to do it (even though you are an administrator account). It drives you nuts. However, it's easy to turn off. Go to the Help menu and search for "Turn off UAC" (User Access Control). There's a checkbox you uncheck to disable UAC. If you have multiple users set up on your computer, you need to do it for each one.
I like Vista, but in my opinion I wouldn't upgrade an existing computer unless I had a compelling reason (like needing encryption). The cost of the Vista upgrade plus any hardware upgrades could reach the cost of a low end dual core computer that is made for Vista. However, when I buy a new computer I would definitely get Vista.

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic FULL VERSION ReviewI'm an IT guy at a University, and I recently had to start installing Windows Vista.
First of all, you need a minimum of 2 Gigs of ram to run this bloatware. I installed it on this guy's laptop, and with NOTHING else running, it was using between 650 - 750 megs of ram TO DO NOTHING! As soon as we started doing anything, it was using over 1 Gig of RAM. Way to go Microsoft! Just want people wanted. A bloated OS that won't run on older machines and will run slow even on new machines.
Avoid it. Don't buy it. Switch to Linux. I use Ubuntu at home.Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic FULL VERSION OverviewFor your basic home computing needs Product InformationWindows Vista Home Basic is the editionof Windows for basic home computingneeds. Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Full Version - Old Version ReviewBACKGROUND: I have used PCs and Macs on a regular, working basis, for 12 years. I approach each platform as a tool, not a social statement. Except where gaming is concerned, computers are tools and that's all they are. Just like a swiss army knife for the digital age. For some jobs the Windows tool has been more effective for me, for other jobs Mac OS X has been more effective. And it's not a question of "graphics vs. business", which is about the dumbest oversimplification in the history of modern computing. Anyone who tells you that does not use both platforms on a regular basis. If they did, they'd know both are robust in the range of jobs they can accomplish: accounting, charting, office, mainstream database work of all types (Oracle, SQL, Filemaker, etc), photographic and digital post-production, audio production and post-production, 3D modeling and animation, CAD, C/C++ programming, web development, mechanical drawing, presentations, spreadsheets, illustration... the list is ENDLESS. And almost without exception, every big name program is made not only for Mac and Windows, but many times Linux too. In short, if a person can't get a lot of great things done on either platform, the problem is the user, not the operating system. ; )
MY TAKE ON VISTAXP PRO USERS: IF you have a fully updated, stable install of XP Pro and your apps are running efficiently, I do *not* recommend a Vista upgrade until MS releases the first major service update, which is likely to include some security updates too. Most experienced XP Pro users will not benefit from upgrading to Vista right now unless they love to play with new software and/or are an early adopter types who can trouble-shoot most problems.
WINDOWS 95, 98, ME USERS: 1) If you are not considering the purchase of updated hardware and software soon, YOU SHOULD. : ) If you ARE considering a new computer soon, and are using a much older system this probably means you are just a casual user, dabbling with internet, word processing and other simple tasks. For this group it probably makes sense to order your new computer with Vista, and not XP installed. Vista is a much nicer system than any of the older variants, and is also much more stable and more secure than the older systems. It provides useful information to you more quickly, it's easier on the eyes, is more capable in terms of its features, and in general is less of a PITA than these heavily outdated Windows systems.
Just be prepared to spend a good chunk of money on a fancier system than you're used to, because you're not going to run Vista efficiently without:
A) Lots of RAM (Gigabytes, not Megabytes)
B) Fast Processors (that's plural, as in, more than one - and at more than 2GHz a piece preferably)
C) A very powerful video card and a big hard drive (as in, more than 400GB)
INTERFACE: to be fair, Vista *does* borrow (and I use that term loosely) A LOT from Mac OS X, which is why people say it looks nicer. It *does* look and feel more streamlined and elegant, there's no question. All the new window transparency, sidebar widgets, streamlined glassy buttons... that was all inspired by Apple's OS design. That's a big part of why it took MS so long. Aside from problems making the clunky parts of XP better, MS was watching Apple update its system about every 18 months, in order cherry pick some of the best "bells and whistles" for Vista. Much easier watch Apple innovate every year, see what works, and then every so often... imitate. It's a little shameless, but honestly it's a good business tactic. I don't admire MS for this, but I understand it, and that's enough because as I say... computers are tools. Not "who we are". Yes Mac users (the ones I've known anyway) are creative thinkers, trend setters and take the road less traveled... but it's the quality of their work and their art, not their computer, that defines them IMO.
FEATURES: there *are* some new additions that make it easier to:
A) Get the information you need from online sources, without actually going online
B) Find files more quickly (once the LONG indexing process is completed - think hours, not minutes)
C) Organize files more easily, and in general get around the system more easily.
D) Work on your pictures, music, etc. Sidebar: It's worth noting Apple is readying a major update as well, which -among several other things- will bring full 64bit support and a feature which lets users run XP Pro or Vista inside the Mac, at full speed, with all your peripherals. In fact, if you're willing to use a beta component, you can do that right now on any Intel-based Mac. There are even 3rd party virtualization products that will let you run Windows XP and Vista apps inside OS X (IOW, you don't have to deal with the MS Explorer, task bar, etc - just the window and tools of your Vista application).SECURITY: sadly, because some idiots have nothing better to do, there will be attacks on Vista in the near future and some will be successful, that is guaranteed. Because every "digital delinquent" on earth is going to try and break it in some way, shape or form. There will be worms, trojan horses, all that stuff. The hope is that the number of those attacks that are successful will be fewer than with XP, 98, etc. I believe they WILL be fewer with Vista, but they will still be a concern. Vista has some holes that have already been exposed in programming circles. So IF YOU DO UPGRADE, don't relax and think you're safe from people trying to take over your computer, crash it or whatever. You're *not* safe. No Windows system will ever be truly safe unless it isolated from outside attacks (i.e. on a closed network where everything that goes in the machines is tightly controlled).
NEW TO COMPUTERS? For most purposes, you will want to at least consider getting a Mac, as the user experience is still preferable in my opinion to Vista and easier to learn. Apple is also using the fastest Intel processors available, so you're not giving up any speed or performance like in the old days. Things that bug me: Vista still requires a lot more time to drill down through dialog boxes and XP-like preferences, and is still not as intuitive from a user interaction point of view as OS X. Part of improving a computer interface is reducing its complexity, not just making it more attractive. Sadly, in some areas MS borrowed the attractive part of Apple's designs, but not the simplicity.
PS - some may wonder: will I be running Vista on my Mac Pro to get some of my work done? Yes. I will run both Vista and OS X in their latest incarnations, but both from the Mac to save on hardware expenses. Good luck and happy computing, Vista or otherwise!Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Full Version - Old Version OverviewWindowsVista Home Premium is the operating system for homes with advanced computer needs. It will help you use your laptop or desktop PC more effectively as well as enable you to enjoy new, exciting digital entertainment experiences - all with the benefit ofadded security and reliability.

Microsoft Windows Vista Business FULL VERSION ReviewWindows Vista is clearly better than Windows XP in a hundred little ways, from the search boxes to the sidebar. The new and improved Vista features are listed all over the place, so I won't go into the details. I will say, however, that they do make an improvement in everyday computer use.
On the other hand, Vista suffers a thousand little flaws. For one thing, iTunes isn't compatible yet. Then, NVidia doesn't have decent drivers yet. Firefox doesn't work with the Windows Media plugin yet. For some strange reason, whenever I save a file in Microsoft Visual Studio, I get impossible-to-delete temporary files in my working folder. Some piece of incompatible software is creating them. Is it Windows Live OneCare? Visual Studio? Tortoise SVN? Who knows? Oh, and did I mention that Vista crashes whenever it tries to come out of sleep mode? I could list more problems, but you get the picture. Vista is not really stable.
My advice is this: If you are building a new system, go ahead and install Vista. You will have a bumpy road, but it's better than buying XP now and upgrading later. Otherwise, wait about six months for Microsoft and the other software companies to get their act together. You have been warned.Microsoft Windows Vista Business FULL VERSION OverviewWindows Vista Business is the primary edition of Windows Vista for business desktop and mobile PCs. Windows Vista Home Basic with SP1 Upgrade ReviewI installed this over XP as part of a general upgrade; CPU, motherboard, more memory and a video card for my wife's PC (yes I am a tinkerer). Installed cleanly. In spite of being SP1 it screwed around for several days downloading and installing upgrades - a minor annoyance (with cable internet - would be ugly with dialup). Looks good, runs good, no crashes (although XP was pretty stable in my environment). Of the upgrades I added a new copy of Windows Office home and student ed so the thing is pretty clean these days. My wife didn't jump for joy at any of this but she's acting like she's pretty comfortable with it and now she uses it a lot (the whole thing is considerably faster) and that's as high a compliment as you get from that quarter. Yeah I hate that it's constantly asking permission (I'll get in and fix that shortly). I don't hate that it blocks popups. The final results were worth the trouble (there was not much)to me.Windows Vista Home Basic with SP1 Upgrade OverviewMicrosoft Windows Vista Home Basic 66G-02690 122

Spore ReviewSee those older 5-star reviews from 2006 (two years before the game was released)? Well, they had a reason to be excited. Spore was supposed to be a revolutionary experience, combining multiple genres while concentrating on evolution and genetics.
Fast forward two years and here we have the finished product, ready to be installed on our hard drives.
First of all, the game incorporates a draconian DRM system that requires you to activate over the internet, and limits you to a grand total of 3 activations. If you reach that limit, then you'll have to call EA in order to add one extra activation. That's not as simple as it sounds, since when you reach that point EA will assume that you, the paying customer, are a filthy pirating thief. You will need to provide proof of purchase, reasons why the limit was reached, etc, etc (it has all happened before with another recent EA product, Mass Effect). EA, of course, is not obligated to grant you that extra activation or even provide that service. In a couple of years they might very well even shut down the general activation servers, because "it's not financially feasible" to keep them running. What you will be left with is a nice, colorful $50 coaster. And you will be required to pay for another copy/license if you want to continue playing.
This basically means that you are actually RENTING the game, instead of owning it. The game WILL stop to function in the future. That's inevitable, because even if EA keeps the activation servers going, there IS going to be a time when EA will simply cease to exist because of financial issues or federal laws (like most businesses eventually do).
Second, the game was dumbed down to oblivion. Evolution doesn't even matter anymore. For example, you can add as many legs to a creature as you want, but the multi-legged creature won't be any faster than a single-legged one with higher leg stats. This gameplay element makes "creating" your creatures entirely pointless (cosmetic only, because everything is based on stats), and brings you about the same amount of excitement as dressing up a plastic doll.Spore OverviewFrom the creators of The Sims comes Spore, where you evolve a single-celled organism into a galactic god whose personality and abilities are completely up to you. Then interact with other players' creatures-including ones made by celebrities! EA Games. PC/MAC, NDS.

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition Upgrade w/ Encryption Coded Software ReviewWindows ME just isn't worth the investment. It is just Windows 98 with some added features. The core operating system is still the same, unreliable OS it always was.
Let's start by looking at the plus side. The new features are pretty nice. Windows Media Player is much better than its predecessors. Internet Explorer 5.5 is a great browser and not having to download the beast is an added bonus. The auto update feature (while somewhat annoying at times) is much easier than searching the web for the latest software updates. If you feel these features are reason enough to upgrade your to ME, then go for it.
As I said, ME still has plenty of reliability problems. It is still possible for a single application to bring down the entire operating system. In my experience it has been rare that I actually get the OS to shut down properly. I have used Linux and NT for years and gotten used to their stability. I had forgotten just how bad the stability of this line of operating systems could be.
One word of caution if you are still thinking about making the purchase: pay attention to the system requirements! I tried installing the upgrade on an old Pentium 133 Mhz system. The requirements say a minimum of 150 Mhz is needed, but I figured the OS would just run slowly so I went ahead with the install. After ME partitioned and formatted my hard drive, it told me my system didn't meet the 150 Mhz requirement and exited the installation.
There you have it, the pluses, minuses and some annecdotes. I don't believe the additional features are worth the investment.Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition Upgrade w/ Encryption Coded Software OverviewMicrosoft Windows Millennium Edition is a home operating system featuring digital media, an improved user experience, enhanced home networking, and a rich Internet experience. Windows computing offers extras like the Windows Media Player 7 and Windows Movie Maker, and it supports the latest in gaming technologies like DirectX, graphics accelerators, in-game chat, and more.
Using Windows is now even safer with new features like System Restore, to quickly restore your computer to a previous working state, and System File Protection, providing built-in safeguards to prevent accidental deletion or overwriting of key system files. This operating system even updates itself by automatically downloading the latest enhancements from the Web.
The included Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and Outlook Express afford a rich and full Internet experience. Take advantage of simple desktop-based tools to import photos from scanners and cameras, then organize, print and share them.Newly enhanced support of home networking includes step-by-step directions for setting up shared Internet connections, printers, and other peripherals, with full support for Ethernet, Home PNA, and wireless networks. Need help? Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition now offers a centralized location to find comprehensive and easy-to-use help--the Windows Help Center.
Note: This upgrade requires a licensed copy of Microsoft Windows 95, 98, or 98 Second Edition.

Microsoft Windows Vista Business UPGRADE ReviewI've just finished upgrading to Vista Business using the Upgrade DVD. During the upgrade from Windows XP pro, the upgrade failed. Because of the timing of the upgrade process, I was left with a non working machine. Every attempt I made to fix the broken upgrade failed as well. As I saw it, the only way to fix this was to install an clean version of the OS to get back to my data. Unfortunately I was wrong (I'll get to that later.) During the clean install, when I entered my product key I was informed that the key was only for upgrades, not clean installs. But, at this point, what could I do, the upgrade failed and my machine was dead. There was an option to not enter the product key at this point, and re-enter it after the OS was running. SO... I continued with the install. After that the install went quite smooth, Vista is up and running on my machine right now as I right this warning message. It looks cool, there are a few issues such as my bluetooth wireless drivers aren't available yet, but I knew about that in advance when I ran the upgrade adviser. BUT now for the BIG issue. When I attempted to use my valid product key to activate Windows Vista, I was informed that my KEY wasn't valid because I did a clean install. After spending 2 hours arguing with MS tech support, they basically told me this... I had to do a clean install of XP and then attempt to do the UPGRADE again!!! WTF!!! They expect me to spend another 8 hours (after I've already spend 5 hours to this point) putting XP back on just to ATTEMPT the upgrade again (which might fail again!??!!?) OR my other option is to spend $299 for the Full install version to avoid the 8 hours of wasted time. This is complete bull! I've been working with MS products for a very long time and every "upgrade" product in the past allowed you to do a clean install if you provided a valid key of a previous product during the clean install process. This product isn't ready for you! Please save yourself time and energy fixing issues that MS should have had worked out. DO NOT buy the UPGRADE DVD, because you are risking $200 on a possible upgrade failure, then will have to spend a lot more time OR another $300 to get another product key.

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic UPGRADE ReviewI was considering making the jump to Windows Vista Home from XP Media Edition until I looked more closely at what features it really had. Want Media Center for Vista Home because you have it on your XP machine? Well, that is found only on the Premium version. How about burning DVD's? That too is found only on the Premium version. Want the 3D aero environment highly touted for Vista? Vista Premium only. How about a Scheduled Backup for your files? Vista Premium. How about Windows Meeting Space to collaborate and share documents? You guessed it, that's found on Vista Premium too.
What Vista Home actually has (2 of 14 features) per Microsoft's website:
Most secure Windows ever
with Windows Defender and Windows Firewall (XP already has a built in firewall.....nothing new here)
Quickly find what you need
with Instant Search and Windows Internet Explorer 7 (you can download IE 7 for free)
If this comes pre-installed on a PC, great, but if you are considering buying this as an upgrade consider what are you really getting for your upgrade money?

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic UPGRADE OverviewWindows Vista Home Basic is designed to be easy to set up, to help people use their PCs securely and reliably, to help people stay better connected, and, like all of the editions of Windows Vista, to be compatible with the widest range of software, devices, and services that people use and trust. For those who simply want to use their PC for tasks such as surfing the Internet, corresponding with friends and family using email, or performing basic document creation and editing tasks, Windows Vista Home Basic delivers a safer, more reliable, and more effective computing environment.

System Mechanic Professional - Up to 3 PCs ReviewI purchased version 7 Pro in early May '08, because of the special pricing and because it had a three PC license. I installed it on my primary machine - a Dell desktop running Windows Vista. It installed fine but I noticed the virus database was marked as outdated. I tried to do an update, and went through the motions - the program indicating that it had updated, but afterward still indicated that the database was over 400 days old (how do you get that outdated on a fresh install)!
I contacted Iolo and they told me to uninstall and re-install, which I attempted. This created another problem. I had a prior version of the included Search and Recover 4.0 already installed on my system, so I did not install this component. I was unable to re-install the SM Pro as long as this program was there. The problem was that I couldn't uninstall S&R using the uninstall on my machine.
I have been in constant contact with tech support but they have only sent links to FAQ's that I have already read. I even got a link for a free upgrade to version 8 but it wouldn't install either. I finally found a means to do a "clean uninstall" via registry editing. This also did not remove the iolo services from my machine. I found a tool from Microsoft to disable these two services. I now had a "clean" machine. I installed SM 8 Pro with no problems - until I tried to run it. None of the applications would work - they needed the ioloSystemService running. I click on the "start service" link under the advanced button of the service tab of task manager, but neither service will start (the other is called "ioloFileInfoList").
I have been continually contacting Iolo tech support with my findings and was upgraded on June 25th to their "senior tech staff". Since then I have not heard from tech support, even though I have continued sending information, requested support, opened new cases, etc. - no word from them.
As part of my experimentation, I installed version 7 on my laptop (running XP) and don't seem to be experiencing any issues. However, my laptop is a backup machine that I rarely use, so it is not a good indicator of how well the program runs.
All in all, I cannot recommend this program. It has definite issues under Vista, it is almost impossible to remove all vestiges of the program once installed, and their tech support is abysmal. I gave Iolo notice that if I don't get any more than an automated response to my last support request, I will be demanding a full refund. The program had great reviews, but if it doesn't work, then it's worthless.System Mechanic Professional - Up to 3 PCs Overview

Command & Conquer 4 ReviewIt is always sad when a great historic game franchise comes to the end of its road. But it is depressingly sad to watch it do so in this condition.
KANE IN DISNEYLAND?
The graphics are laughable. True, EA has been steering the C&C franchise towards the ...cartoon direction ever since the RED ALERT 3 installment. But the RED ALERT series had always been more playful. Even so, what was barely palatable for a RED ALERT game is outright insulting for a TIBERIUM one.
If his tanks could still run-over infantry units, have no doubt, he would hunt down whoever did this to him.
Because, you cannot mock Kane and avoid having your lungs infused with Tiberium fumes!
MORE UNITS? PLEASE WAIT BEHIND THE YELLOW LINE. FOREVER.
One of the most annoying features of the new C&C4 is the units cap. You cannot produce more units above a (very low) number. Upgrading your tech-tree with such a unit cap in place means you have to kill and replace most of your units - and make painful decisions as some units are more equal than others. It feels like having to deal with a (small) Diablo-like inventory: whatever does not fit within the grid must be left behind to rot.
And to add insult to injury, extra units are bestowed with a dropper. A tiny one.
This cap reeks of one thing: an attempt to turn this series into a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (fewer units means less lag). And no one seems to care that this took away one of the most fun tactics in a C&C game: tank rushing.
SORRY, ALL OF OUR TIBERIUM-HARVESTERS HAVE BEEN RECALLED. WOULD YOU CARE FOR A SENSIBLE COMPACT?
A COMMAND & CONQUER game without harvesting? It could be an RTS game of any name (and there have been baseless RTS games before), why did it have to be a C&C game? Because, once again, EA proves to have no respect for this beautiful art-form. If it means exploiting a classic title in its swan song to sell a few more units, so be it.
Moreover, game publishers seem to have an ever declining expectation of their targeted customer IQ. Hence the ever simplified games released. So, yes, this feels like C&C-for-Dummies.
BATTLEFIELD CONTROLS OFFLINE? YOU'RE SCREWED COMMANDER!
Yes, this must be the most inconvenient DRM scheme ever.
If you hate STEAM for requiring endless updates, this is worse.
If you hate games that require online activation because they never actually become yours, yes, this is worse.
And if you hate games that come with Limited Activations and become worthless the moment you pop the box, well yes, this is worse.
This inconceivable scheme demands for the owner of this game to always be online to verify that the copy he payed for is legitimate. That's right, not just activation, ALWAYS ONLINE. Yes, even for a single player game.
Will it deter piracy? No, pirates will be playing the game without all those DRM hassles. Legitimate gamers are left complaining - and, once more, EA will turn a deaf ear.All in all, C&C4 will not appeal neither to old friends of the series nor younger gamers. And (for as long as it will keep working), it will have you jumping through hoops for the privilege of having ...bought it. And I thought it was the other way around.
This Tiberium field has been depleted long ago.
Move along Commanders.Command & Conquer 4 OverviewStory In the year 2062, humanity found itself on the brink of extinction. Tiberium, the mysterious, alien crystalline structure that infested Earth for decades and caused years of relentless conflict between the Global Defense Initiative and the Brotherhood of Nod, was close to rendering the planet uninhabitable. In the midst of this crisis, Kane, Nod's prophetic leader, emerged from seclusion to deliver GDI the message that he had developed a system that could control Tiberium and harness its power. But he could not build this "Tiberium Control Network" without GDI's cooperation. Thus, the two opposing factions—GDI and Nod—found themselves in a desperate and unlikely alliance to stop Tiberium from extinguishing mankind. Now, after 15 years, the network is nearly complete. Tiberium is under strict control and the revitalized Earth is on the cusp of a new age of prosperity and progress. It is only now that the world's citizens begin to seriously ponder why Kane chose to help, and what he will want in return. Kane. GDI. Nod. Tiberium. How will it end? These questions and more lead to the dramatic final act of the 15-year Tiberium saga in Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight. Gameplay Command & Conquer is a real-time strategy gaming franchise, and Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight is no exception. Players assume color-coated versions of the GDI or Nod factions and uncover segments of the map, where they must manage Tiberium and other resources in their possession or that they they mine or commandeer in the field. Other factions occur in the game, but are not playable, and different single player campaigns are available to players depending on which of the two factions are chosen. The energy that Tiberium crystals possess is used in the manufacture and upgrading of mining and combat units, weapons and support infrastructure in preparation for impending conflicts with other players on the same map that are doing the same. Each faction has its own distinct unit types, both land and air based, which although unique, are overall more or less balanced against those of opposing faction. In addition, certain units can be captured on the battlefield and used to supplement your arsenal. The overarching task though is to combine the right number and type of units with the right battlefield strategy for the conflict and terrain at hand. Historically, C&C matches have been won by completely eliminating all enemy units that stand against you. Although there is certainly plenty of this within Tiberian Twilight, the game also is different in that players need not eliminate all enemy units, instead capturing control nodes throughout the game and holding them for a minimum amount of time. Doing so leads to earning enough points to win the match. Tiberian Twilight also differs from earlier games in the series with the addition of certain RPG game elements. Players overall orientation within their chosen faction is class based, with units falling generally in offensive, defensive or support classes depending on your play style. These units can be upgraded with experience points, which are gained through success against enemy units, with more advanced enemy units earning the conquering player more points, and thus potential unit upgrade opportunity. 5-on-5 Online Multiplayer Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight allows PC gamers to team up and battle like never before. Join your fellow commanders online and tackle your opponents in the biggest C&C multiplayer to date, featuring 5 vs. 5 objective-based battles. Choose your favorite class and take online strategy action to the next level as you conquer objectives while pummeling your enemies. In addition, an all-new party system lets you move with your party of friends from one online battle to the next. Key Game Features
The Epic Conclusion to the Tiberium Saga - Kane returns in the thrilling conclusion to one of gaming's longest running storylines, told through gritty live-action cinematics. Choose to take on the campaign solo or team up with a friend and play cooperatively.

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 - Full Version ReviewIf you're reading this. You're thinking of buying Windows XP home edition here are a few things to keep in mind.
First thing is, you might be able to get away with buying just the upgrade edition. The upgrade edition allows you to do a full install. It just asks you for the CD of a previous version of Windows. Also remember you can download service pack two from the Windows update web site. So no need to buy it integrated with XP.
These are what I consider the minimum system requirements:
256 MB of RAM. I have found is adequate more equals better.
500 MHz or higher will do.
7200 rpm hard drive will help a lot.
If you're running Windows millennium edition, or 98 upgrade now the stability is vastly improved. Gone are the blue screens of death.
Frequently asked question: is Windows XP Pro better than home edition?
Windows XP Pro has a more high-end networking features that most home users will never miss or would even know were missing. So for most users Windows home edition is fine. They both are based on the same code and are almost identical.
If you're thinking of upgrading from Windows 2000, I did, because I like the GUI interface better. But Windows XP is as stable as Windows 2000. So it's your call.
The plug-and-play ability of Windows XP is totally great! Windows XP will by default find most drivers for video card sound cards, network cards, etc. that is such a bonus gone in the days of having to search for CDs with drivers.
I recommend upgrading to Windows XP be it professional or home edition. It is a great operating system
Have some fun and get it doneMicrosoft Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 - Full Version OverviewWith Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2, you get safer browsing and communication, powerful security tools, and improved experiences. Packed with multimedia features, Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 aims to unlock the full potential of your personal computer. It also looks great, with rounded window corners, larger and more detailed icons, and a clean-look desktop.

For Web browsing, XP Home comes with Internet Explorer 6.0 and MSN Explorer. The most significant new feature for Internet users is the built-in firewall. A firewall protects against one of the most disturbing security risks, in which other users unknown to you might connect to your computer while it is online, reading private files or causing other damage. XP's built-in firewall is a simple affair, but it does prevent most types of unauthorized connections.
