Hospital Tycoon ReviewMy copy of this game worked OK after some initial bugginess, so I do not share the same concerns expressed by the earlier review.
I guess my concern is that even the fully-functional version is not highly playable. Once you run through the play scenarios, which honestly does not take all that long, you end up in "sandbox" mode, which is highly repetitive and does not contain many variations.
On the plus side, the animations and graphics are fun, and the diseases and equipment are witty, too.
Keep your money in your pocket - at least until the developers come up with something much more variegated and playable than this is.Hospital Tycoon Overview

GTR FIA GT Racing Game ReviewIf you have any interest in racing games, and you own a PC, then this is the game for you. Two words: Incredibly Detailed. You can customize nearly every aspect of the game. For example, want to drive in the cockpit view but can't see over the dashboard? No problem - use the hotkeys to adjust the drivers seat. You can even tell the game to add driver head movement so you can actually look through a turn the way real drivers do. You can adjust every part of the car to make it handle exactly how you want it to handle.
The graphics are fantastic. You can adjust so many graphic settings that it should run on most computers. The car detials are exact, though most of the race car sponsors are unfamiliar to me. The cars have different paint schemes and customizations. Even the cockpits are exact replicas of the real sports cars.
The gameplay is near perfect. That is, you can modify the game to make it as hard as you want it to be. The cars all exhibit real physics with down forces and tire wear just to name a few. The game gives you three modes to play, from Arcade mode to Simulation. Remember, this game is designed as a simulator, so the game has a steep learning curve. I recommend a good two analog stick game pad to get the most out the game. And practice changing the setting to make the game comfortable to play.
Overall, the game is fun and deep, with excellent graphics and sound. What more could you want in your race car driving simulation?
---Update: For a game with so many settings, you can't adjust the number of laps in the arcade mode. Seems like they should have added that. Also, the game is very hard. I have spent most of my time playing in Arcade mode. Just be prepared to practice,GTR FIA GT Racing Game OverviewGTR is by far the most realistic racing game ever created for the PC. Featuring the real GT racing teams, you can Race the Chrysler Viper GTS-R, Porsche 996 GT3, Ferrari 575 Maranello, Corvette C5-R and many more cars in the original FIA GT Championship first-hand on your PC. Burger Shop ReviewBurger Shop is one of the best games of this type out there. Unlike a lot of the 'fill orders' type games, there is no character walking around the screen filling the orders, you just point and click on the food to build it and right click or drag it to serve it. Level 1 has you serving simple hamburgers and cheeseburgers, but at each new level you are required to pick an additional food item or upgrade so that it gradually becomes very complex to build and serve the food. The characters you serve are varied with their patience and predictability and additional ones are added as the game progresses.
Other excellent features of this game: You can go back and replay any level at any time and the level never plays the same way twice. The game gives cute little 'ranks' and 'trophies' for those of us that are goal-oriented. And it also offers 'challenge' and 'relax' modes if you just feel like playing a quickie game. Of course the game is so addicting you never stop there!
Personally, I find building the more complex burgers difficult. Looking at them and instantly mentally grasping what ingredients go into making them and then executing that is a slow process for me, so I can't really get through the last set of levels or 'expert' levels with perfect scores, but that does not prevent me from going back and trying again. The replay value of this one is exceptionally high; well worth every penny.Burger Shop OverviewAfter receiving a set of strange blueprints in the mail, you build an extraordinary food-making contraption and open a restaurant! Your goal? Make food and satisfy customers until you discover the truth behind the mysterious blueprints and the BurgerTron 2000!With several game play modes, more than 60 upgrades and 96 trophies to collect, there's never a dull moment as your kitchen sizzles with excitement! If you fry it, they will come...to your Burger Shop!

Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas ReviewIn my opinion, the movie was horrible piffle. However, this game displays 'nice' graphics, with no 'blood-letting' so that it is safe for the whole family. That is, unless swordplay is a no-no in your household. There are a huge variety of moves (over a dozen) to use in combat. Many different types of 'power-ups' and weapons to utilize as well. Gameplay is both on the high-seas and land. Nice water graphics (with some specail options for pentium 4 owners). Good soundtrack, and lots of battling 'demons'. This takes up a relatively small amount of hard-drive space, requires very little ram, and plays out in a far more creative way than the movie ever did. Not the greatest pirate adventure I've played, but, if you're into combat, this is a lot of fun, Matey.Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas OverviewSinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas take you an the epic adventure from the popular Disney animated film!

Cake Mania 2 ReviewWhen you first start playing you immediately start thinking about he game Diner Dash, but after a while you start thinking "no this game is totally different". The customers (of which there is a wide variety), will keep you on your toes. You have to make cakes, put on icing and a topping then give it to the customers, not to mention the double and triple layered cakes. While doing that you have to keep the customers happy and they range from a temperamental astronaut to a cake happy sumo wrestler (they love double portions) as well as some secret service men. You will also be able to purchase items that can benefit your business and your goal is to win all six trophies. Its a great game!!!Cake Mania 2 Overview

SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition with Rush Hour Expansion Pack ReviewYou don't have to be a gamer to appreciate SimCity 4. If you have the hand-eye coordination to browse a website, you're covered there. You don't need a great sense of spatial relations with the various levels of zoom. You don't need to be able to make split-second decisions with the possible exception of quickly hitting the pause button. You don't need many of the traditional computer gamer skills to enjoy SimCity 4.
What you do need is the ability to make risk-benefit decisions, and a sense of how the real world works. You need to know, for example, that people with a few bucks in their pockets don't choose to live next to a factory, and you need to understand whether it's better to spend money to build a fire station now, or risk having to rebuild if you wait.
One thing that SimCity 4 does real well is it's simulation of how a government budget works. If, for example, you build an infrastructure that appropriately supports your city, you'll find that funding everything at 100% would require raising taxes beyond what the residents and business owners will stand for. Pretty soon you'll see abandoned residential, commercial and industrial properties. That means your tax base goes down, and you'll have to raise taxes even further.
If you take the alternative and cut the funding to your infrastructure so you can lower taxes, you'll be faced with teachers, fire fighters, police, transit and healthcare worker strikes, and satisfying them enough to bring them back to work will cost you more than appropriate funding would have.
Just when you think you've found that balance between funding your infrastructure and your tax rate, the power plant and roads you originally built start reaching the end of their lives, and you need to replace them. (You were building up a surplus you can tap into, weren't you?)
While your budgetary problems may consume you, there are other factors to consider. A big one is transportation. Sims don't like rush hour traffic any more than you do - and probably less. If you let commutes get too bad, the Sims will stop going to work. You'll either need bigger roads, more efficient mass transit, or you'll need to move the factories and residential areas closer. But wait... Didn't we already establish that people don't like to live next to factories? Again you have to struggle to find a balance - and that balance needs to fit within your budgetary constraints, too!
SimCity 4 Deluxe includes the Rush Hour Expansion Pack. In addition to more transportation options, Rush Hour (and thus Deluxe) adds a "you drive it" feature that allows you to control cars, planes, helicopters, and other transports. If you're really getting into the planning and strategy of the game, these options are a distraction. But if you're showing your city to someone less interested in city planning, a you drive it mission may be a fun way to tour the city.
Something I would love to see in real life is instead of having candidates for public office debate each other, set them down in front of computers, and have them prove their ability to successfully build a working city in SimCity 4. The only governing skill SimCity 4 doesn't simulate well is the ability to work with others. I think we should be very worried about any big city mayor who isn't able to demonstrate their abilities by being successful in SimCity 4.SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition with Rush Hour Expansion Pack OverviewSimCity 4 Deluxe Edition turns you into a citizen, a criminal, an architect, a mayor, even a god -- bringing you deeper into SimLife than ever!As you create railways, ferries, plan out streets, you also get to use that transportation in a series of great new driving missions

SimCity 3000 Unlimited ReviewFor those who don't have SimCity 3000 already, SimCity 3000 Unlimited is the best way to get into the game. The game is nearly identical to the smash hit of 1999. All the same playability, the same city building challenges, etc.
For those who already own SimCity 3000, there are a number of new options that could make it worthwhile to upgrade. In fact, when you install Unlimited on a computer that already has the original 3000, you get the option to transfer over files (like all your old cities). It then even does the uninstall of the old product for you (very nice). Granted, Unlimited does chew up a bit more disk space so you should make sure you have room to spare for the new version.
I'd also suggest you try to get in while the rebate is going on. It will get you back $10 on the price of Unlimited. Then you won't feel so bad spending money on a game you basically already have. Then do what I did: give your old copy of SimCity 3000 to a family member to get them hooked on the game. Virtual City ReviewThis game's a gem! Without getting too complicated, I think it offers a bit more depth and contents than a lot of other casual games in this genre. And something else I find rare and precious: replay value!
If I wanted to make a comparison, I'd say the mechanics of Virtual City remind me most of Transport Tycoon (in a much, much simplified way). Although you do get to build your little city, it's not so much a building game as it is a transportation and resource-management game.
There are lots of things you can build in the game though: roads, houses, decorations, bus stations, utility buildings (fire station, hospital, tech stations, recycling drop spots...) and 7 whole production chains (i.e. from wheat to pies). You can even modify the existing layout of a map (to a certain extent) by bulldozing existing roads and wooded areas, then rebuild it differently.
The buildings and vehicles' graphics change when we upgrade them, which is much nicer than just having a certain amount of stars next to them.
At the start of each level, you are given a set of goals to fulfill. The game consists mostly in bringing the required goods to the appropriate buildings (or neighboring cities), which in turn will produce another type of goods needed by another building, or fulfill a goal. The goals are varied: goods deliveries, population amount and/or happiness, income, special buildings to be built, etc.
The game's very relaxed. You can try to beat the "Expert" time if you want, but you won't be penalized in any way if you don't complete a level within that time frame -- you can still come back to a particular level any time to play it again and try to beat the timer if you feel like it. So, in this manner, the game is not at all stressful, and not even "clicky". You can just relax, enjoy the beautiful graphics and have fun building up your city and transportation network.
Between levels (50 in all!), new buildings, upgrades, and other types of improvements (i.e. a hot air balloon to be launched from the plaza) are unlocked for you to purchase.
The campaign game plays on various maps in 5 different locations, many of which large enough to be scrollable.
Now, one of the most important thing to me: replay value. For one thing, there's already replay value in the way that you can replay any level individually as I mentioned above, whether you want to improve your score or beat the timer or just try a different city layout. But also, every time you finish all the levels in a particular location, it opens a very large Sandbox map in that location where you can pretty much do whatever you want. Endless fun! :)
Anyway, I really enjoy this game. It's relaxing, very pretty, very entertaining, and I can tell I'll be playing it for a long time without getting tired of it. Well worth the small price tag for sure!
I've played Virtual City on Vista 32-bit, and currently playing it on Windows 7 64-bit. Works fine with either operating system.Virtual City Overview

Sid Meier's Railroads ReviewI've spent some good time with the game now and, despite the fact that I'm about as big a fan of Sid Meier's work as you're likely to find, have to admit disappointment with this game. When it comes right down to it, the game seems more like Sid's golf game than the original RRT. It's shallow, fast and just not nearly as fun as you'd hope.
Of course it's not all bad. The graphics are beautiful, the music is great and you actually get a real manual. The game looks nice and plays nice, even on a system which is not a true gaming rig. The animations are great as well and I love how each of the train cars at a depot have to be filled individually with coal or grain or whatever the case may be. The patent auctions are well done as well.
Unfortunately, there are a few problems with the game:
First, the game moves too quickly. For example, if you play the Eastern USA scenario, you may start in Baltimore. You can immediately join with Washington, plunk a depot in Washington, and get a little Grasshopper to run a single mail car and a single passenger car back and forth. By the time the train has made its first run from Baltimore to Washington, you'll have enough money to connect to your second city (Baltimore to Frederick). So you do that, and get your second train. Give it four or five minutes and you'll be able to either double the line between BAL and WAS or create a third line to a nearby resource. Within fifteen minutes you will have connected to every city and needed resource in the vicinity. By then your opponents (assuming you are playing against two) will have pretty well done the same so that every good-sized town has at least one connection. The opponent railroads are a complete mess, with weird overpasses and tunnels all over the place. Much like the previous iterations of RRT, the AI seems to deal with brute force rather than sophistication.
Second, the maps are too small. RRT and RRT2 had a real epic feel. RRT2 was especially good with this, allowing you to make huge railroads stretching across an entire continent. The maps in SMR are tiny in comparison and few in number. This could be my single biggest point of disappointment. It contributes, of course, to the first problem, since you now have three railroads stuck in just a small corner of a country.
Third, the financial game is shallow compared to previous RRTs. The same is true of the economies. There doesn't seem to be much sophistication in this. Also, it is very easy to make great deals of money and, because the game moves so quickly, if you take a few minutes to look around the map, you'll probably find that suddenly you've got a couple million dollars in your account. This may be less the case in the more difficult European scenarios, but certainly I haven't had any trouble making money in the US of A. The stock market offers buy and selling. There is no splitting, no short selling or anything else. There are ten shares per company and that's it. I may just be missing something, but it also seems difficult to know how much different resources are worth, which ones are the most valuable, and so on.
Fourth, there seem to be some problems with routing. It's not unusual to see trains getting all plugged up near stations, even stations with three tracks running through them. The crossovers kind of work, but not as well as you might hope. When a station gets enough traffic running through it (and that may be only 5 or 6 trains) it can really begin to bog down so trains sit endlessly without being able to unload. There have also been times when the little "end of line" roadblocks have refused to go away, even in the middle of a station. That means no trains can run past the roadblock out the other side of the station. To this point I haven't found an easy way of resolving this. I think it will prove difficult to have stations with a large number of trains accessing them.
Fifth, laying track is so automatic it's almost disappointing. Unlike previous games, there do not seem to be a lot of premiums in placing bridges or tunnels. A track running from Phoenix to Flagstaff, which requires at least one major bridge and a couple of long tunnel sections, will only set you back about $500,000. That wouldn't get you very far in previous RRT games, and I think it's better that way. It used to be more important to find just the right route (anyone else remember running trains through the mountains to California in RRT2?), but now it hardly matters anymore. Terrain gets smoothed, tunnels get dug and bridges get built just like that. You can just smack a track wherever you want one and the game takes care of the rest.
Sixth, there is no campaign. This is hugely disappointing as the campaign in RRT2 was one of the best parts of the game (with the exception of those stupid puzzle ones where all you had to do is route trains). The individual scenarios have a list of objectives, but if you are not looking for them, you won't find them and won't heed them. I don't think you ever get reminded of the objectives and they don't seem to have any real bearing on the game. They are just there. Once you finish a scenario there is no connection to the next one--you just start over. All-in-all, this is pretty disappointing.
So overall, I think it has the makings of a great game...they just didn't finish it. The game itself is so good in the way it looks and the way it plays. It pains me that they kept it so shallow.
PS - One more thing. I forgot to mention the strange fact that the economies are not modified depending on the era. So be prepared to funnel steel to an automobile manufacturer in 1830...and one that is based in a city filled with 20th century skyscrapers.Sid Meier's Railroads Overview

Sally's Salon ReviewI bought Sally's Salon for my niece's 9th birthday last year. In the 11 months since, I think I've played it even more than she has -- and that's a lot! The better you serve your customers, the happier they are and the bigger your tips. The more quickly you serve your customers, the more customers you have in a day and the more money you earn to shop for additional chairs, upgrades, and staff. It's so fun, but a bit addictive (when I installed it, I decided to "try it out" so I could help my niece learn it; when I finally looked up, I realized that I had been playing for nearly 6 hours!!). Download the trial to make sure it fits your taste; the fun of Sally's will be fully evident in the first 15-20 minutes (especially once you realize that the shops only get nicer -- and busier).Sally's Salon Overview

Cake Mania: Main Street ReviewThis is a great improvement over the other Cake Mania games. In this version, you have the Cake Shop as well as a flower shop, burger and sushi shop. Thats like 4 games for the price of 1! As you go along in the game, you can also upgrade the town, bringing in even more money. Plus your shops earn money even when you're not there. All in all, a great new game and highly addicting! I will say this though, the flower shop got a little too hard for me to keep up with, but aside from that the rest was challenging enough yet beatable.Cake Mania: Main Street Overview

Build-a-lot ReviewEver dreamed of building your own real estate empire with no money down? If yes, then this is your opportunity because the game is free and all you do in it is build houses and make lots of money. Once you make your money you can spend it to buy more houses, upgrade existing ones or build something new or tear down a small house and build a bigger one in its place - very exciting.
You play to make as much money as possible by playing in the real estate market as a developer, a speculator or a house flipper. You start with a certain amount of money and some properties and then, on each level you attempt to accomplish some specific goal: own this many houses, earn this much rental income, have this much money in the bank. You make money by selling the properties you developed and by charging rent. The value of your property increases if you pay for upgrades. To make it short, you buy low and sell high and you flip your houses. Oh, I forgot, you must meet your objectives within some set time unless you select the 'relaxed' mode.
Overall it's not a bad game but there's not much to it beyond what I just described above. The resolution seems to be 1024x768 and you can play it in a window or as 'full screen'. The graphics are okay in the sense that the houses, the roads and the landscape features are recognizable but, for some reason, the construction guy is an animated yellow hard hat - funny. The game runs on Windows XP or Vista.
I am not sure what a fair rating would be for a game that's free. It' okay, I guess, but I doubt that most of us are going to spend more than 30 minutes on it.
